They CAN'T screw up another first round pick...

This is my first post here.  I am fairly detached from any type of Buffalo media (from South Jersey right outisde of Philly) so I don't know what the buzz up there is.  Chances McNabb is dealt to Buffalo are extremely slim, and this is a good thing.  So I am going with the assumption that the Bills keep the number 9 pick and don't deal down for more picks.

I understand the draft is a crapshoot, but no team continuously screws up their first round pick like the Bills.  Whitener, McKelvin, etc.  I actually let out an audible groan, in the library while taking a final last year, when the Bills took Maybin.  With that said if the Bills are ever gonna right the ship I feel that they HAVE to go OT in round 1, and take the OT with the least amount of "bust" potential.

Highly unlikely that Okung falls to them.  To me Trent Williams is the no-brainer.  Baluga has short arms and for all the sure-fire, technically sound talk I can't help but to think back about the hype that surrounded Robert Gallery and he has been nothing but a colossal dissapointment.  As far as Davis, I am from Jersey and a Rutgers alum (he is our best recruit ever) but have to admit the work ethic scares me.  He has some high upside, but alittle bit too much Mike Williams in him.  And Bruce Campbell although a specimen, is in no way a top ten pick.  As far as Williams, he may have struggled a bit this year but he moved from RT to LT.  Also, he is an elite athlete with the game tape to back it up.  Keep in mind that he is touted as a better prospect than Loadholt (who we should have taken last year) he had a really strong first year.  Bradford was barely touched back there the past two years and Williams was OU's best lineman.

After round one I would like to see either Cody (if available) or Cam Thomas in round 2.  A nose is going to be essential and I think Dan Williams isn't that much better than either of these 2.  After that I would love to see Tebow available (definitely worth a flyer in round 3) and hopefully either Carrington, Hardy or Selvie in round 4 to give us a younger end with some upside.

I know opinions seem to differ but I feel this would be the best bet for getting us back on track.  The draft seems to leave me devastated and confused every year (sorta like sitting through "Shutter Island") and I just feel that they can't chance blowing things again this year.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

He means they aren’t superstars. Althought Maybin will get his chance to explode this year. Whitner is definitely a disappointment for being drafted 4th overall. Yeah he’s a decent player but he is not the dominant safety that he should be, being drafted at the spot.

whitner

He is a disappointment but he taken 8th over rt after the suppose to be great Mike Huff know in okland and no better than whitner. Mckelvin is gonna be a really good cb watch.

mikeo: Maybin may be early to call a screw up but over Orakpo? curious at the time and even worse as the season progressed lasy year; and McKelvin at 11 seemed like a reach…he is solid but far from a shutdown corner and what he added to our ST already existed with Parrish

by sojobillsfan on Mar 16, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

OK I agree...

that McKelvin was a bit of a reach at 11, but that is a long way from calling him a screw up!
I’m the eternal optimist, thinking that a much stronger coaching staff will make both of these guys better. To quote Dennis Miller : “It’s only my opinion, I could be wrong!”.

IMHO, the last coaching staff, with the exception of possibly Fewell and April, were just plain horrible. They tried mighty hard to fit players into a system instead of installing a system that played to the rosters strength.

Only time will tell, but I like what I see from CHIX so far.

The frustrating thing about the 2008 draft is that we picked McKelvin over Rogers-Cromartie, and Hardy over Desean Jackson, both who’ve made the pro-bowl and were going to the Bills in a lot of mocks.

Maybin hasn’t really had a shot yet to prove himself and the 3-4 will be perfect for him. Plus he was just a rookie last year. McKelvin I don’t consider a bust either. He is only in his 3rd year this year and barely played last year because he got hurt. I really think he could still be a good corner in this league and he is a great kick returner (yes, yes, the Pats game fumble… I know). But besides that he had a very good rookie season returning kicks, and there’s still a good chance he becomes a solid corner for the Bills.

by Gesome77 on Mar 16, 2010 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybin was just a rookie bust so was Orakpo and he had a real big impact last year
and McKelvin was taken at 11, so the fact that he is a great kick returner and possibly will develop into a solid corner has to be considered a dissapointment; look at all the ridicule at Ted Ginn who is a great kick returner and average receiver. He is considered a bust league wide.

Orakpo

played on a defense that was top five… do u think that haynesworth had anyhitng to do with his success…also 4 of his sacks came agianst jamarcus Russel and the raiders

Mckelvin

Wast where he was taken, He will be a shut down corner. And he is way better then the dude that went to AZ after him And that Guy made a Pro BOwl

Screw -Up

I agree, we need a 1st rd pick that makes a immed. impact. Not a project like Maybin. Hopefully this regime will draft better than predessors. Though we got 2 O/L that seem to be making a impact. Lev & Wood.

by buffalobacker on Mar 16, 2010 5:52 PM EDT reply actions

Byrd may have made a minor impact as well :)

by Gesome77 on Mar 16, 2010 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

last years draft was right on

i know we should have gotten a tackle with the first pick but if maybin turns out to be better than he was last year then it wont be as big of a mistake…. Nelson Byrd and Levitre will be building blocks if wood comes back then he can be solid as well

Agreed

I’m with you sojo. Based on where they were drafted, McKelvin and Maybin have both under-performed. I understand that Maybin may not have been given all the opportunity in the world last season, but come on…is there anyone who, at this point, wouldnt rather have Orakpo?

Lets go Chix…we’re not asking for draft-day brilliance, we’re just a little tired of crapping the bed every April.

well...

last year I was furious about that pick, I’d been talkin all day about how I wanted Orakpo and didnt think he’d fall to us and then he did and I was in momentary football nirvana… the stars were finally aligning for the Bills

and everyone knows the ending of that wonderful tale.

But Maybin’s speed is really remarkable, and if he can get to be a physical enough player to succeed at OLB without losing that speed and explosion that made the scouts develop such an obsurd man-crush on him then, heck… I’d even go so ffar as to say the Bills made the right decision

not right at the time… but right in the end

That’s funny because that’s what they said about Bruce Smith when he came out……just a coincidence

I would have no problem drafting T Williams one and Cody two. But “taking a flyer on Tebow” doesn’t follow what you stated in the first paragraph. I think every pick this year needs to be a relatively “safe” pick. I think drafting a guy that will contribute significantly is what needs to be done in the first 3 rounds at least. Tebow will need mutliple years to grasp the concept of being a conventional QB. Why not just skip drafting a QB altogether (if we dont pick one in the first) and get one next year.

I firmly believe whomever we pick next year at QB in the first will be as good if not better than Tebow after one year in the NFL.

McKelvin and Maybin

I wouldn’t call McKelvin a bust just yet he’s got a yr or 2 left before earning that title however that yr I was hoping the Bills would have taken Rogers-Cromartie and he has great for the Cardinals…or if anything certainly better than McKelvin has been in his career.

Also I too was one of the Bills fans hoping Orakpo or Oher would fall but highly doubted it would happen and when it did I was so excited and thought we finally caught the break we were looking for and suddenly we take a “project” player in Maybin. He still could be very good but I agree this yr we need a 1st round impact player!! but I do like taking Tebow in rd. 2 I must admit let him sit and learn for a yr or 2. but in Rd. 1 we need immediate impact!!!

AZ boy

His Knock coming out of collage was that he didnt like to tackle and it shows.Dosent anyone remember him getting run over by Regggie soft bush in the playoffs. I will never consider him good after seeing that

by smov656 on Mar 16, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

true

some players are softer than others but if the guy is locking down WR’s all day and plays a full season I’d still say he was a better pick than McKelvin AS OF NOW…of course that could change if McKelvin gets better……I’m surprised you remember that play but do you also remember in the playoffs when he had a great pick 6 too? when has McKelvin done that yet let alone in the playoffs

I cannot and will not ever understand people bashing the Bills for taking a project like Maybin in the first round last year and then shouting to the heavens that they should draft Tim Tebow anywhere above round 4.

I mean, if orakpo wasnt on the board I might agree with you there, but what other Qb is on the board at 41?

but yea, now that hes got a shot at 3-4 OLB I like Maybin again… or at least am giving him the benefit of the doubt

It is simple ...... Last year is not this year

Last year we were in win now mode ……hahahhahaahahahahahhahaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaahahahahahahaaaaaaa…….. taking Maybin was a dumb move for Juaron because he didn’t have the time to wait for him to develop.

This year is the first year in our re-re-re-re-building project. I can only assume CHIX have at least 3 years to prove themselves. Tebow should be ready to start in 2 – 3 years.
