NFL Farm System
The idea of an NFL farm system was something I brought up in the 'Franchise QB not easy to find in 2010 ' thread yesterday and I was wondering what everyone thinks about it.
We threw around ideas... the first being an 8 team "AAA" style league. My idea was to have every division use the same farm team, for example us, NYJ, MIA, and NE would all share an AFCE minor league team. And then each division would do the same. But after further input, it probably wouldnt be a great idea having our young kids line up next to division foes. So take 2 AFC teams and 2 NFC teams and have them combine for a team.
This would get rid of practice squad "stealing" but it would be a league where these young players who arent ready year 1 to be an NFL player, examples: Demetris Bell, Brian Brohm, Aaron Maybin, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Matt Lienhart when he was first brought in, Jamarcus Russel, etc... Instead of these players "sit" for a year and not gain any playing experience, they could be a on a team, playing, and learning the NFL game.
i'd like to hear your guys input on this, change it all up, scrap it, discuss Tebow other ideas on what to do with these young players can learn instead of just sitting and watching... just like to hear what you guys think about it because its something Ive thought of for a while and think it should be like this somehow.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

what he said.
It was previously NFL Europe.

I understand those are/were developmental leagues… but you think Tim Tebow is going to play in the UFL? That doesnt make sense… what Im talking about is a NFL version of MLB’s “AAA” teams and the NHL having the AHL. And not over in Europe, 8 cities in America or possibly even Toronto, with all the talk of getting them an NFL team, see if it will work by placing an NFL minor league team there.
This will create 8 more cities to have NFL football and it will be a place where these young players can play and be tought by NFL coaches instead of backing up and just talking mental reps for a year or two

Why would any team
want a top draft pick to play in some developmental league? You really think the Bills, or whoever drafts Tebow, would risk him to injury in some minor league with many minor league players??
8 more cities for NFL football….do you really believe that? Do you think that San Antonio or Las Vegas is going to be behind some minor league team that has a bunch of no name players playing at a lower level?? Did you see how poorly the UFL was followed this year?

Im not saying they want to have them play in a development league, but it would be wise too. Scouts are saying it will take Tebow 2 full years of learning in the NFL before he’ll be a starter… Well if instead of watching for 2 years, have him play for 1 in a league that is owned by the NFL and he would be playing with NFL caliber players that, just like him, just need some time to learn the game.
And with Bell, think if he was playing his first year instead of just watching. IMO O-lineman get nothing out of watching… if he played a year in the development league for a year and Buffalo actually knew if he was capable of handling LT position week 1 instead of just hoping.
And its not going to be all no name players, I listed “bigger name” players above, Leinhart, Rodgers, Quinn, many young O-lineman and with all the changes to 3-4 and majority of 3-4 OLB’s are going to be transitioning from 4-3 DE’s… why not help the ones that arent getting it from the get go by teaching them for a year. Of course theres going to be “roster fillers” but there is in the NFL too.
You would be able to call them up, just as in NHL or MLB. Imagine sending Maybin down last year, see if he can find his game, then he gets called up in Nov, or something, and plays well, gets a few sacks… idk it makes sense to me…

Practicing vs playing
I think it benefits any player more to practice in the NFL, with positional coaches, studying tape and being around veterans while they continue to learn/grow than it ever would playing and practicing in a minor league, with minor league coaches. I’ll take Bell’s development under Sean Kugler in practice for his first year over playing in a UFL type league under some has-been or never-will-be OL coach.

Plus
How many rookies or other young players see absolutely no time during their rookie year? A handful in the league? Maybe one or two per team? There’s a reason that these guys are all on their teams active roster….because they are needed. Whether it’s situational, special teams or simply to develop…..

OK....here is my dumb idea for the year
Have the scout teams travel with the regular team. The scout teams scrimmage before the game…….maybe only 2 quarters. The scrimmage would be free for those who already have tickets for that game and dirt cheap for those who don’t. I am sure there are many reasons this wouldn’t work, but you asked :-)
A married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing!
Isn’t this why the NFL has the 3 years out of high school rule? So they can continue using CFB as a minor league.
I’m not opposed to this idea, but I would feel bad for guys like Tim Tebow or any high draft pick with lots of pressure on them. They’re scrutinized enough without having to play in public and have their progress, or lack thereof, constantly on display. The baseball minors work because there’s not as much money involved and they don’t have a cap system. I could see teams like the redskins trying to subvert the cap by putting their guys they would otherwise cut in the minors instead of suffering the cap hit by releasing them.
