2010 NFL Draft
Gailey wants to draft a scatback - AFC East Blog - ESPN

"The guys that are coming out now, there's a bunch of those 5-9, 185-pound or 195-pound, quick-as-a-cat water bugs that are running backs-slash-receivers that might give you a little bit of a punch on the field, maybe make a big play."

Belichick, Gailey talk Tebow - AFC East Blog - ESPN
"I think guys can [change positions]," Gailey said. "I don't think that's an issue. Quarterbacks normally are good athletes and smart. Them moving to another position isn't an issue normally if they have the makeup to do that physically and if they want to. There's a bunch of guys that only want to play quarterback."

A shift toward Trent Williams – Inside The Bills
"Of all the mock drafts we’ve been keeping tabs of offensive tackle still dominates for the Bills projected pick with 24 of the 48 guesses going with a pass protector (50%). Quarterback is second accounting for 25% of the guesses by prognosticators." Trent Williams is a name increasingly filling the number nine slot in mocks.

"I had no private workouts (with Buffalo)," said Brown. "There were numbers of coaches there (at the combine). They didn’t have me do any drills. A couple of other teams did. The Bills did nothing special other than just watch me."

BillBoard: Gailey eyes a running back in the draft
"We've got to upgrade there in some way, shape or form, and there are some good running backs in the draft this year, different from what we've got,'' Gailey said. "So a change of pace is may something we could do there with a different type of player. The guys who are coming out now, there's a bunch of those 5-9, 180 to 185-pound, quick-as-a-cat water bugs that are running backs/receivers that might give you a little bit of a punch on the field and maybe make a big play.''

QB sorted out by draft

In the AFC East Blog, Gailey said:

“You’d like to have everything settled before you went into the draft. The problem comes if you don’t solve an issue before the draft. Then you have to try and solve it in the draft. Then if you don’t solve it before the draft or in the draft, now your back’s to the wall and everybody knows it. That’s a bind you get into. Now they can hold you up.”

Translation…“Please don’t make me draft a QB. I really don’t want to draft a QB, and if I don’t have this thing figured out by the draft, someone is going to make me try and fix this by drafting a QB.”

I took it more as a nonspecific thing. I think he was just saying it more in the way of, you want to keep your options open. Especially since there are really only two first round options at qb this year. I think what he’s trying to avoid is needing to get a qb in the draft and having both claussen and bradford gone before we even get to pick, at which point, he’s completely hamstrung by things out of his control.

Right, but

I guess in that I see he isn’t particularly fond of either of the two big QB names. Otherwise, as a new coach, I think you’d want to get one of those guys. At the same time it is pretty clear that he is not satisifed with the current QB carousel such that he intends to do something about it before the year starts. Hence I get the sense of panic “we need a vet option, or else I will have to address this in the draft” and the vet option is the clear preference.

But this is draft talk, so it could be 100% baloney.

I didn’t get that impression as much as he didn’t want to be backed in a corner to where they were against the odds of having their draft QB choice available without doing something desperate(i.e. Jets/Sanchez). If anything, I think it strongly suggests they’ll be dealing for a competent vet somehow, prior to the draft. The biggest surprise to me was his feeling that the 3-4 personnel are pretty well set, other than some late-round line depth. One thing for certain, both Gailey and Nix are big on Tebow. I just wonder what round value they place him at.

I took Gailey’s latest comments on Tebow as a sign he really doesn’t see him as a QB in Buffalo. Specifically mentioning how players can change positions. I guess i’d have to hear the entire piece, to see if it was asked if he believes, in general, that players can transition to the NFL via a positon move.

Is it true that Gailey and Nix are big on Tebow?

At this time of the year, your guess is as good as mine. I think they’re semi-interested, but would prefer other options at QB. However, right around now is when the smokescreens start flying, so who knows.

by Jeff Winters on Mar 24, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah, smokescreens are rampant at this point in the game. I do find Gailey to be very open with the media, which is so very different than anyone who’s coached this team in years.

Is it true that Gailey and Nix are big on Tebow?

I think they’ve both been quoted as saying he’s got all the qualities you look for in a player. But probably doesn’t mean crap. Nix and Gailey both talk like poker players, DJ just had the face for it.

They both say “got” more than any other word in their vocabularies.

I think they really do want a Vet

And maybe they have one in mind, I just also get the impression that the vet is so much more preferable to the rookie option. It seems that he is saying if I don’t get a vet, then I have to address this in the draft…and I read it as he isn’t all that confident in his ability to address it in the draft.

But as I said to quantum above, this is draft talk-so it could be all baloney anyway.

For some odd rerason

I really think Lydell Sargeant has a very good chance to make the roster this season.

growth spurt? he was 5’9 in the ‘09 combine and the Bills list him at 6’1 :-)
