NFL Free Agency: Bills Tender Ellison - WGR 550 SportsRadio
WGR 550 is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have tendered an RFA offer to LB Keith Ellison. The level of the tender is currently unknown.
The NFL's free agent signing period begins tonight, and teams must have restricted free agents tendered by midnight tonight in order to retain some control over their rights.

Well we will find out what the Staff thinks of Mr. Ellison.
What is a good tender for such a unappreciated player by the Bills Fan Base?
This is like dumping a new puzzle from it's box. Now let's start putting the peices together. I guess this is what we all asked for.
I would guess the lowest tender
The original round tender, which in his case carries a 6th rounder….

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Ugh
Why? LB depth is fine and definitely something this team needs a lot of, but Ellison should not be it. He’s not a fit in the new scheme and I just don’t see what role he can play. If they’re signing him as a ST player only, that’s fine, I guess, but just wastes another spot on a player that could be added to the 3-4…..
If we’re going to move to the 3-4, then make the move fully! Don’t go bringing back undersized, slow LB’s that can’t fight off a block to save their lives. I don’t want this team half-assing this rebuilding job again like they did last time, and moves like this, albeit small, may be an indication that that might occur again. I just hope he never sees the field defensively!
Hey, maybe he got the low tender and some team will give up a 6th rounder to sign him away!!! That’d be hilariously awesome!

They don’t need to keep him, man. You can cut a guy you’ve tendered.
I just don’t see what role he can play.

Isn’t there some repercussion though for using a tender? Like having to pay part of the contract?

Why not just tender everybody then and see if you can get a trade in return, and if not cut later?

Bingo!!!
we have a winner folks…. I would think because of the rules this year, that may be the smart thing to do… Everyone thinks trading will be the name of the game, might as well tender in order to have something to trade!!!
BTW… those tenders can be withdrawn at any time, unless the layers jump on it, and sign….
Sorry, but you’re clearly mistaken, because I’m a huge loser.

Don't be so hard on yourself....
just because your a Bills fan :-)
I prolly have a few years on you @ 2 years older than the Bills themselves…
I believe that once an RFA signs their tender, it becomes fully guaranteed. If you tender guys you really don’t want you might be stuck paying for them even if you cut them.
by tm on Mar 4, 2010 12:35 PM EST up reply actions
From all I've read...
that would be wrong… However, if, a player is cut, or the tender is withdrawn, he immediately becomes an UFA….
Really, I thought tm had it right. If that’s the case, then the to point BillsNYC made, it seems like there is no reason not to tender everyone if what you are saying is correct, and that doesn’t happen.

I was wondering the same thing. In an SI article I read this morning it seemed to indicate that there is a limit on the number of available tenders:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/ross_tucker/03/03/tender/index.html?xid=si_nfl
I also thought I read that it did have repercussions regarding the contract, but I’m fuzzy on this as well, so if anybody has an explanation of how the process works the clarification would be greatly appreciated…
Yes I know that
I just don’t want them bringing Ellison back with the intention that he has a role on defense.

I seriously doubt he has a role other than “backup” on defense, because Gailey’s already said their plan is to start Poz and Kawika inside.

Camp fodder/competition...
No one, as in none of the players, should go into camp without at least marginal competition…
And who knows?? Maybe as we speak Ellison is in the process of gaining about 30 lbs
:-)
It has to be for special teams. Has to be.

Maybe they know Fewell will want him and are throwing the tender on em so we get something in return.

Not just the Giants....
I would think.. Any of the TB2 schemes would look long and hard at him after the year he was having before injury..
That said, it’s a smart FO move IMO… Hey, weren’t we all just talking about trade possibilities???
Hahaha
I like how a few people are acting like theres a chance Ellison will be the worst player on our roster next season.
I pray for the day where Keith Ellison is the worst Bill on the field.

Possible reasons for tendering Ellison
1. Obviously trade
2. Special Teams
3. PT player if/when we run the 4-3 as we make the transition to 3-4 AND special teams
I think it’s probably all of the above. The level of tender will determine what OBD is thinking, but I think a 2nd round tender would protect him from being sought after which would mean that reason #1 is out the window.
Its a good thing that I did not eat lunch because I would have thrown it up when I just read that they tendered Ellison.
What has he ever done on the field to prove that he is solid? Our defense has been well below average and he has been a part of that. Where does he fit in our 3/4 scheme? He is way to undersized to play the ILB position and everybody knows that he is not going to play the OLB position. So basically we are keeping him around for special teams? Atleast find someone who can fit in the scheme who can play special teams. THat is why I almost puked when I saw that we tendered Ellison
Ellison's never been intended to be a starter though.
Every time he’s seen extensive playing time is because of injury’s. And you could do a lot worse as far as LB depth goes in the NFL. Plus his production on ST’s can’t be overlooked. I kind of think part of the reason Ellison was tagged, and admittedly it’s a small part,is because he’s been such a “good soldier” for the Bill’s the last few years.
I concede the fact that he is a good special teams player and he has been a good soldier (but so has Reed and Denney), but where does he fit in the 3/4? If he could fit our scheme, then i could handle keeping him around as a backup but he will never work as a 3/4 linebacker. We need depth at the linebacker position for guys who are suited to play 3/4, not 4/3
He's not a prototypical 3-4 Linebacker I agree
But are we gonna be able to switch out every backup linebacker on our roster in one season? And Ellison has been more productive then Palmer,Bugg’s,etc, etc, by leap’s and bound’s over his career so far. So if were gonna keep a backup it may as well be him IMO.
Atleast find someone who can fit in the scheme who can play special teams.
I promise you, Mr. Wahlberg, that Ellison’s getting tendered will not prohibit the team from doing exactly what you posit there.

This isnt a bad thing........
the guy has been decent for us the last few years……….could do alot worse than Ellison.

I'm not saying this guy is a starter, and neither are you (I think)
They did say that this rebuilding wasn’t going to be complete this year, so why are so many having heartburn? It’s not like he’s going to be a starter in this defense. We need all the warm bodies we can find for LB depth, and this tender makes sense from that standpoint and from the ST contribution as well.
Let’s hope he doesn’t have to start any games next season…but you can probably say that about most backup players in the NFL nowadays.
And with the 9th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select...Hey, Buddy, you can't select a high school senior!!!
I think it’s funny that you blast Gailey for being mediocre in his previous position but then say that we could do a lot worse than Ellison who is mediocre at best
We got the tools, We got the talent
by J2 on Mar 4, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions
well if people here want to give Gailey a chance with these players.
then shouldnt we give Ellison a chance with Gailey?
I mean………to me you’re saying………..is Ellison is mediocre before Gailey then he would still be mediocre with him.
So that means if Gailey was mediocre before the Bills, he would still be mediocre with them.
So…………………which is it for you?
The only cure for a bad today is tomorrow.

agreed, don't have a problem with this...
Just because he’s tendered doesn’t mean he has to start in week one right?
with all the SP players cut
does this really surprise many of you? i think its a good move.
Buffalo, that's where it's at baby. - Adam 'Pacman' Jones
This is a depth move.
Remember how Chan said that we need a lot of work on our depth at LB, well meet our third stringer at Will ILB (behind Poz and Veek). Or second stringer if we put Veek at the Mike spot, which I still think would be a mistake.
The more I see, the les I know.

Can't believe they haven't tendered Incognito yet????
If there is anywhere we need depth and players other than LB is on the OL. Are they trying to sign this guy to a longer term contract or something as a reason for them not to tender him so far?

Ellison? C'mon!
I know he’s a hard effort guy but he really can’t play anything else but ST. And don’t forget they already cut a great ST man, John Wendling. So why keep Ellison around?
OBD should definitely be focused on tendering Bryan Scott and George Wilson, and MAYBE Incognito and/or Schouman.
Whitner is a bum, and he should be traded. Byrd Man, Wilson, and Scott should be our top safeties next year.
I couldn’t hurt to give him this tender, because I wouldn’t be surprised if some team with need for an OLB, perhaps the Colts or Bucs, and say: “Look at the amount of tackles this guy has had the last couple of seasons and it’s only a sixth rounder; let’s do it!”

Wilson gets 2nd round tender according to Buffalo News
Here is the link.
I think we all saw this coming. 2nd round tender should keep him in Buffalo, hopefully they are working on a multi-year contract.
2nd is not enough
I hope they are off on that report because I can see a lot of teams being interested in Wilson at that compensation. Everyone needs safeties.
But if another team...
offers more, we still retain right of first refusal (match the offer) before accepting that 2nd rd pick…
A second round draft pick for Wilson
Would be great. But I doubt anyone else makes him an offer at that tender level. And if a team does the Bill’s would be fool’s to match an offer sheet for him.
WIlson
a young starter who can play multiple positions and is a known commodity. I wouldn’t be happy losing him for a 2nd round pick. i understand most would be. there are just so few players on his team already.
I wouldn't exactly call him a young starter
He’ll be 29 this month….Not old, but not exactly a youngster
