Osgood says Chargers are dumping Jamal Williams - PFT
Chargers WR Kassim Osgood is stating that NT Jamal Williams is going to be cut. Osgood's report has been confirmed. Bills GM Buddy Nix is very familiar with Williams, having spent eight years with him in San Diego. Buffalo needs a NT for their new 3-4 defense. Discuss.

He only played in 1 game last year, landed on IR, and had a $5M salary with a $1M bonus coming up.

It helps that apparently...
no one in SD knows what their doing… Note that Sproles wasn’t tendered, but now he is…
I think it’s far more likely that someone got a report wrong than A.J. Smith changed his mind.

It’s also possible that they’re close to working out a long term deal, making the tender irrelevant.
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute
I’d guess we’re the odds-on favorite to land Williams given our gaping hole at NT and Nix’s history with him in San Diego.
Reports now, a day later, are that he’ll land back in SD under a new contract.

ya – he’s getting old though isn’t he? 33 or 34…..might be a good player to plug in for a year or 2 though

if healthy – I think he could help us in the short term though. depends on if he’s the same player after the injury

Players with his skill set tend to age fairly well, but the injuries are a concern. San Diego’s run defense was pretty poor without him this season.
Agreed, there was a huge drop just watching that defense in the middle last year with out him. Does anyone even know if San Diego has a backup plan with out him?
I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
Now that they are keeping Sproles, it’s fairly likely they’ll draft a NT high. They had some depth behind Williams last year, but it wasn’t quality depth.
I think that Vaugh Martin is their backup plan. The drafted him in the 4th last year out of Western Ontario University (go Canada!) and played him at DE with the plan being to slowly ease him into the NT position. I might be wrong though because if that was their plan it would have stood to reason that he would have played some snaps at NT last year after Williams’s injury, but he only played rotational DE.
The more I see, the les I know.

Well, that tells you something
If Williams is healthy and that valuable to their run defense, they wouldn’t cut him. He’d be worth the Chargers’ money to keep……so buyer beware.
by ccthemovieman on Mar 4, 2010 6:56 PM EST up reply actions
So we sign him and draft his replacement in like the third round and let him develop behind Williams. Sounds like a good plan to me!

If he is healthy
Which is a big if, he would be perfect to bridge the gap to a palyer liike Terrell Troup.
Perfect fit for us
We need an NT baaad, Buddy knows him, we need veteran leadership. Boom. I hope this happens.
Jason Ferguson worked out pretty well for the fish in a similar situation and at his best he was no Jamal Williams for sure.
Get him to Buffalo asap. That’ll hopefully give us a solid one or two-year stopgap at NT and we’ll then draft a guy like Cam Thomas to be molded behind Jamal Williams.

Ted Washington
Was right about the same age – If he is recovered from his injury and can get him for the right price, I am all for signing him. Granted, there will be several other teams looking for a Nose Tackle as well.
But Buffalo is a sexy destination
To a guy like Williams…the thought of the best chicken wings on earth might be “sexy”. I would add a “Free Chicken Wings for Life” clause into the contract.
by NorCal BillsFan on Mar 4, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions
Near sexy
That is, near the Sundowner in Niagara Falls…the center of sexy on the Niagara Frontier. Not sure if CanadianBillsFan would care to corroborate.
Seriously, the fans support of the Bills is reaching legendary status, garnering nationwide recognition. Where else can a big sloppy lineman go and feel such love? O.k., but the Sundowner is in Bills Country.
"They're Killin' Me Whitey. They're Killin' Me" -- Lou Saban
Intriguing......
If the Bills were able to land someone like Williams for 2-3 years, it sure would help, as many of you have said, in the grooming of a young guy that we might draft. It also might help on a needs basis in the draft. Or should I say, a priority basis?
The other intriguing thing to me is that Osgood might be let go as well? If that is also the case, then why couldn’t the Bills take a chance on him? First, he is one of the best S/T players in the league and 2nd, he is big and could at least fit a 4th wr role possibly. I mean, its not a necessary thing that we would need to sign someone like Osgood but as I said, its a little intriguing to me.
"If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?"

Osgood is a FA and he said on twitter something along the lines of “there’s a 3% chance I’m back in San Diego next year.” Apparently he was upset that the Chargers didn’t view him as a WR. I think there’s a decent chance we take a long look at him.
Its not like he can't compete as a WR for us too...
The promise of a WR competition and more possible playing time as gotta be appealing, as long as he is still willing to play STs I say target him.

I wouldn't view him as a WR either

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
This would be a huge pickup. Just what the Bills need to have for a couple of reasons.
a. you pick him up and teams are all of a sudden worried about the Bills taking a player at the top of the first that they might be interested in. This could cascade into a number of things transpiring on draft day as far as trades go.
Allows the Bils a little more freedom in the draft to take a WR or RB in the mid range rounds.3 i would assume.

I think 2
With a 3rd guy capable of playing NT and DE….
There’s no real set number for any roster, so it could be 2, 3, or 4….depending on the team.
Myself…I’d sign a vet like Williams and draft a player with high upside at the position, and have Kyle Williams as a player who could play there. I’d add multiple UDFA’s and let them battle for a end of the roster spot, or PS spots….

So true, as inept as the O was, Coles isn't catching a 98 yarder.
His numbers would have been around 35-45 catches 700-750 yards 2-3 TD’s if that.

Did I read right that
The Bills are not going to tender Incognito? That must mean that Wood is going to be ready. Gailey did say that Bell and Wood were ahead of schedule.
If we were to get Williams, I think he could be a good fit with our Williams coming in on passing downs for us. Hopefully that would give us 2-3 years to develop a solid NT, instead of having to grab one of the top because we need a guy to start…
I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
does nix’s connection with san diego mean that we are in for a free agency period of nothing but the chargers’ sloppy seconds?

Williams is older and hurt a lot, but....
… Buffalo could platoon J. Williams and Kyle Williams at nose tackle on run and pass downs, respectively, with K. Williams starting at RE on run downs.
Signing Williams would also allow Buffalo the ability to focus on OT early instead of picking a guy like Dan Williams. Or simply allow Nix to focus on BPA, which is the best possible situation.
It also allows Nix to draft J. Williams’ replacement later (Torrell Troup?). Or maybe develop an unknown (Favorite? Harvey?). Pat Williams was an undrafted rookie free agent in 1997.
I’d sign J. Williams if it were me….

I would hope that platoon
does include a rookie as you mention.
If Jamal Williams were signed, NT might be knocked down a few notches in terms of where it falls on the needs list. I would hope it’s not totally overlooked, and I doubt it would be.
I’d sign him too, and draft an upside NT in the middle to late rounds, AND bring in another couple of undrafted players….
~K
"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Yeah, I completely agree
Jamal Williams would be a near-term player that we can get 2-3 years out of. With K. Williams rotating in, I can live with that at NT for a season or two.
The mid-round guy(s) would be future development guys (Troup, Jeff Owens, Linval Joseph). The undrafted guys (Harvey and Favorite types) are attempts at building depth and possibly getting a starter, with any luck.
I would be happy with a starting DL of K. Williams – J.Williams – Stroud, with S. Johnson, mid-round NT, UFA like Nick Eason, and a seventh DL spot filled by an UDRFA or late round prospect.

I think the 3-4 fits Spencer Johnson better than the 4-3 IMO. He could have a pretty good (backup, rotational) season.

I think your right. He seems to me to be a better fit for the 3-4 DE position than the 4-3 DT. And he’s one of few players on this roster that can take up two gaps at the line.

I think Johnson could be one of the biggest surprises this year. He could be a Jarvis Green type situational rusher.

Absolutely. I just don’t see why Jamal Williams would be willing to come to Buffalo, unless we pay him a lot more than everybody else, which I don’t think we’ll. The same can be said with Larry Foote. These guys are venerable veterans, who have been in the league for quite some time, and who would probably like nothing more than to finish their career competing or preferably winning the SB; suffice to say it’ll take a while before we’re at that stage.

Just so you folks know what’s going on tonight:
Kurupt and WABillsfan will be orchestrating an all-night open thread marathon for the start of free agency. If anything Bills-related happens, they’ll have it. If nothing Bills-related happens, they’ll probably be discussing alcoholic beverages, which seems to be a wee-hour norm in these parts.
Either way, Rumblings will be up all night as free agency starts, and if you’re an insomniac, you’ll be right at home here tonight.
