NFL Free Agency: Opening Night Open Thread

Welcome, dear readers, to what is quite literally the eleventh hour. (Well, I suppose that technically it's the 23rd hour; you get the point.)

We're an hour away from the end of the 2009 NFL league year, and the start of the 2010 league year. More importantly, we're an hour away from the start of the NFL's free agent signing period. Sure, tasty free agent entrees that might have interested the Buffalo Bills are no longer available (like Miami QB Chad Pennington), but others have suddenly become available to even the playing field (like San Diego NT Jamal Williams). GM Buddy Nix is set to embark on his first free agent period as a full-blown NFL General Manager, and he's got his work cut out for him.

This, folks, is your open thread for the start of NFL free agency. In one hour, teams will be permitted to begin contacting the representatives of unrestricted free agents. It's not clear whether or not Buffalo will jump right into the fray and schedule a bunch of visits, but we'll be up in case they do. Well, I should clarify: I scheduled this post to publish at 11PM, but chances are astronomically high that I'm actually unconscious at the moment. (Yeah, I can talk to you while I'm sleeping. That's how advanced this SB Nation platform is.) Kurupt and WABillsfan, however, are actually awake at the moment, and they'll be your humble hosts through the wee hours. I'll be back bright and early tomorrow morning.

Typically, the start of free agency is boring. You'll be bored tonight, in all likelihood, so bring alternate topics of conversation. Enjoy yourselves, and get hyped up for a new league year!

[UPDATE #1]: PLEASE HEAD ON OVER TO OUR NEW OPEN THREAD TO CONTINUE ALL DISCUSSION

[UPDATE #2] ONE MORE OPEN THREAD FOR THE NIGHT, USE THIS THREAD FOR THE REST OF THE EVENING

WELCOME LATE NIGHTERS

If you have any rumors, visits or actual signings (unlikely), just post them in the comments section. If anything big happens, I’ll move it to the front page.

Remember to keep it somewhat tame, drink good beer, and have fun….

Sorry to be late

But work actually is busy and I had to do work, a sad day indeed :-(

Nix and Chan, the new Cheech and Chong of the Bills, hopefully they will be as successful in business as they were, and not so much the drug fueled comedy act....

So anyone actually think that there will be any signings tonight?

Or are we just here to finish off a 24 of beer? Personally I’m here for the beer and the good times.

Cromartie to the Jets. That makes that D even better. I do not like that at all.

by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 4, 2010 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

I actually think

SD was not using him right. He is an excellent press man guy. They used exclusively zone and man off. With the agressive style the Jets paly, I could see him being among the league leaders in ints next year(no one wants to throw on Revis),

by The Irishman on Mar 4, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. Cromartie is going to have 7-8 int’s next year with all the balls thrown his way. That’s a scary D to play twice a year.

by Dr. Brackish Okun on Mar 4, 2010 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

Jamal Williams might be wanted back in San Diego

From PFT

Apparently he was shopped around, and nobody offered anything to the Chargers. The price tag could have been why, but the injuries might also be a major concern. We’ll see if Nix has any interest….

by Kurupt on Mar 4, 2010 11:04 PM EST reply actions

I'm guessing that nobody offered him anything because they knew that there was a good shot at him being released.

I saw the story and thought that it was really a none story
sure they might want him back, but he’s fair game right now. And if I was Jamaal I wouldn’t take too likely to being released in order to simply being resigned to a smaller contract. I mean sure I might resign with the Chargers, but I’d look at what kind of offers are out there first.

The more I see, the les I know.

Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!

by UtahBillsFan on Mar 4, 2010 11:04 PM EST reply actions

I’ll be curious to see how Cromartie fits in there. He’s been a player that offenses can pick on the last couple years. But he’s also a big time playmaker who teams will have to throw at considering that Revis is on the other side. Plus, the Jets should be able to give Cromartie a lot of help with safeties and blitzes.

Risk - Reward

Cromartie’s going to give up plays and make plays- and as you said, teams have to throw the ball at him now.

He might even get better in Ryan’s defense.

I go with Parker's heartrate method

Mon/Wed/Fri are 2-5 miles at 85% heartrate or better.

Tuesday is swim, 70% heartrate ceiling.

Thursday is a walk with a 60lbs pack, 70% heartrate ceiling.

I agree, great way to start the day. I’m assuming that you run as well?

Swimming is a great recovery workout

I lift at lunch MWF. I’m really big into max weight one-rep sets, and kettlebells. It’s been working for me. And I’ve started eating a lot more. I was taking in 1400 Cals a day, and now I’m up to 2550 Cals.

The guy I’m working with has a biology degree and a physical training degree, and he advised both. I thought the food was nuts at first, but after two weeks, I felt ten years younger.

5th rd pick

I am hoping we make a play for Troy Smith…for just a 5th round pick that to me would be a bargain…he was about to battle Joe Flacco till he became ill…and from i’ve seen in preseason he’s lite years ahead of ol Trent Checkdown. To be honest I see him beening a safer pick than say Pike or McCoy…so we shall see…i hope we give up a measley 5th!!!

Some players to keep an eye on, perhaps

RFA’s:
Anthony Montgomery, DT from Washington, carries a 5th round tender. Huge player at 6’6", 330 lbs and could be a guy worth looking at for NT depth.

Troy Smith, 5th round compensation. He’s been discussed already.

Marlin Jackson CB (yes) from the Colts, no compensation

Ben Obomanu WR Seattle, 7th round compensation.

UFA’s:
Cornelius Griffin DT from Washington. Potential veteran DE.
Marques Murrell, OLB from the Jets, wasn’t offered a tender. Only 24 years old and has flashed some potential in the past couple of preseasons.

Heck if you’d ever make it up, I’d bring you to the Irish Village in Ottawa’s Market. It’s 4 Irish bars/pubs that are all interconected. You usually have live bands in at least 3 of them, and just ood times all around.

Well, it's been a little while...

And I have to admit, my excitement level for this off-season is much lower than years past, but still… it’s the start of another off-season and I’ll be damned if I’m going to miss it (besides, have some stuff that needs to be done by early morning tomorrow, so i’ll be up late anyways!)

I haven’t followed the Bills off-season as closely as I have in the past (multiple reasons), but I still feel like making a bold prediction (I literally have not read any comments in the last week, so i apologize if this has been mentioned…):

No late night signings tonight, but sometime in the next 6-48 hours, Buffalo signs Troy Smith to an offer sheet.

It’s not 11:55 EST, FIVE MINUTES UNTIL THE OPENING BELL! Happy free agency everybody!

Chester Taylor to visit the Bears tomorrow too

Via Adam Schefter: Bears will be busy Friday – visits from DE Julius Peppers and RB Chester Taylor.

Don’t see it happening. Why would Chester want to go from a supporting role to AP to a supporting role to Matt Forte?

If I was Chester I’d be looking for a team where I could get at least 50 of the snaps.

The more I see, the les I know.

me too

but I guess the counter-argument would be that Forte didn’t have such a great year last year, so there may be a chance to compete? I know, thin…

Forte had a horrible year last year, can see them bringing in another back as insurance..

by 7-9nomore on Mar 5, 2010 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah but Chicago had a HORRIBLE line too. I think that Forte is a lot like Marshawn, put a halfway decent line in front of him and he’ll be stellar.

The more I see, the les I know.

by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 5, 2010 12:34 AM EST up reply actions

I thought I read something about Forte not penetrating through holes as well/much as in 08 somewhere too, almost as if he’s afraid to get hurt..

It’s what happens when your line is Horrible. Not all backs are as fearless as Fred Jackson. Freddy hit a lot of holes that he had no business going towards, yet got good yards out of them. Not all backs have the balls to do that.

And I think that you’d be right. I think that what makes Freddy fearless like that is that he knows that he’ll only be in this league for another 4-5 years at best, so he’s just trying to be as good as possible now.

Why would a team put a player that is in the downslide of his career (even if it is a very slow downsilide) for a guy that shows as much promiss as Forte? I just don’t buy it.

Thats exactly why I think Tebow is going to them in the first. I mean they already have a decent (Probowl) QB that Tebow can develop behind. For the Jags it would make sense on a player standpoint, a marketing standpoint and a franchise standpoint. I really think that Tebow is going to the Jags in the first.

Looks like the Ravens are looking at Walter or Boldin as their fix at the WR position, per Rotoworld via Peter King

According to SI.com’s Peter King, the Ravens will focus on adding free agent Kevin Walter or trading for Anquan Boldin.
The team did have interest in Brandon Marshall, but they’re leery of handing him “real money” on a long-term. Of the two targets, Boldin is a more natural fit as a true go-to receiver with size and playmaking ability. Walter is more of a complementary receiver, with the team already has in Donte’ Stallworth and Mark Clayton.
