Free Agency Kickoff: Quick Recap
Hello and good morning my fellow Rumblers. As we all anticipated, but hoped wouldn't happen, nothing occurred of any real import vis a vis our Buffalo Bills at the start of the NFL's free agent signing period. In fact, a whole lot of nothing AT ALL occurred in the world of the NFL. Please head into the post to see what little DID, in fact, occur. Please note - all of the following transactions are compiled from the following sites: Rotoworld.com, ProfootballTalk.com, SI.com, ESPN.com, and Scouts.com.
Player movement
Nate Burleson, WR, Lions - Signed a five-year, $25 million deal with $11 million guaranteed.
Antonio Cromartie, CB, Jets - Chargers traded his rights for a 2011 third-round pick that could become a two.
Brandon Manumaleuna, TE, Bears - Signed a five-year deal; money undisclosed.
Kyle Vanden Bosch, DE, Lions - Signed a four-year, $26 million deal.
A.J. Feeley, QB - Close to signing with the Rams.
Corey Williams, DT, Lions - Reportedly traded from Cleveland to Detroit for a low-round pick.
Re-signings
Chargers re-signed TE Kris Wilson.
Falcons re-signed QB Chris Redman.
Colts re-signed MLB Gary Brackett.
Eagles re-signed FB Leonard Weaver.
Close to being signed
CB Dunta Robinson - Slated to join the Falcons later today when the two sides have a little more face time at Falcons HQ.
FB Leonard Weaver - Slated to sign a contract extension with the Eagles.
DE Kyle Vanden Bosch - Will be in Detroit today to visit and most likely sign with the Lions, where he'd re-join former Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
QB Chad Pennington - Rumored to be very close to signing with the Dolphins again, but word is that there are issues with his demand for a no trade clause in the contract so he won't have to move his family again. Pennington is willing to accept the Dolphins' No. 3 QB role.
LB Karlos Dansby - Slated to visit the Dolphins today, and is rumored to be ready to sign on the dotted line with them.
Rumored visits
Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor are slated to be visiting the Bears today, and it has been claimed by Peppers' agent that the DE is the Bears' player to lose at this point (if this doesn't imply collusion and tampering to a HUGE degree, then Billy Fucillo isn't a fat man who sells cars in Central NY).
Anquan Boldin along with Kevin Walter are rumored to be the top targets of the Ravens per Peter King via his twitter page.
Chad Clifton is said to be visiting the Redskins this weekend, while the Packers continue to apply the full court press to re-sign him.
The Broncos are in full on bring the army in mode right now, with OT Tony Pashos, C/G Rex Hadnot, CB Nathan Jones and DL Justin Bannan all coming in Friday.
Richie Incognito, recently of the Bills, is said to be getting serious interest from several teams in the league, including the people who gave him up to us, the Rams.
Antrel Rolle is reportedly set to visit the Giants today, and supposedly was offered a five-year deal by the Dolphins without dint of a visit. The Bears were once rumored to be in the running for him.
Leonard Little has expressed interest in going to the Panthers to finish his career if/when Peppers finishes bolting out of town.
Kevin Walter has been one of the Belles of this FA Ball so far, and has been rumored to being courted by the Ravens, Bengals, Buccaneers and Jaguars so far tonight.
In Bills news interest, two players we could take fliers on for training camp fodder who might turn out well post-injury are NT Ma'ake Kemoeatu (now former Panther), OT Adam Terry (former Raven) and OG Chester Pitts (former Texan). No, they are not currently listed as Bills targets by the news sources, but I think they are all worth a waiver of a low contract to see if they have any gas left in the tank for our re-building team.
That's all as of now; if you see or hear anything newsworthy for the FA period today, place it here until Brian and MRW get something more official up.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Great news on Pennington
I think I can breathe a little easier today.

Rec'd. Pennington signing with anybody but the Bills will be my favorite move of Free Agency.
But why 3rd string QB for Miami? Who the hell is their 2nd string?

Tyler Thigpen

Ah yes, the other guy pumped up around here that I don't get.
I guess some people here must think really highly of Miami’s QBs! Strange, because I look at that group and don’t exactly think it’s Steve Young backing up Joe Montana, but hey, to each his own.

I’d pay a huge amount of the money that I don’t have to switch QB situations with the Dolphins this very second.

Not me. I wouldn't switch with the Dolphins.
They have just enough talent that they may be “fooled” into thinking that they have a “good enough” QB crop to be successful. But, mark my words, none of those guys they have at QB right now are going to lead Miami to a Super Bowl win.
The Bills, on the other hand, have just enough “below average” talent at the QB position to know they have to draft a Franchise QB in the First Round, or at least they should know this.
I’m saying Chad Henne, Tyler Thigpen and Chad Pennington are not Super Bowl winning QBs. They are not Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Eli Manning, etc. But they may be enough to keep Miami from getting that great QB. At least the Bills know they need a Bradford/Clausen. Now, if they go after them, that’s another story.
by StroudFanClub on Mar 5, 2010 9:09 AM EST up reply actions
Well, clearly, I have a higher opinion on the future prospects of Chad Henne than you do. That’s fine. I’d much rather have four QBs worthy of snaps than, um, zero.

Yes, your right on a few levels
Yes, you have a higher opinion of Henne than I do. I think he’s ok, but ultimately I don’t think he’ll ever really lead a team to a Super Bowl win. Unless that team had an unreal defense and he played a “Trent Dilfer” type role.
And yes, for next year only, I would rather have the Dolphins QBs than the Bills QBs.
But I gotta tell you, I love the fact that our QB situation is so dire right now that it almost screams “JUST PICK A CONSENSUS TOP 1-2 QB IN THE DRAFT AND STOP TRYING TO FILL QB ON THE CHEAP”. I love that we don’t ahve to waste our time hoping Tyler Thigpen can somehow turn into Peyton Manning. I’d much rather just do the right thing and get Bradford this year or wait until next year and get the top QB in that draft.
It’s the most important position….do it the right way. Grab the best QB in the draft either this year or next year.
by StroudFanClub on Mar 5, 2010 9:57 AM EST up reply actions
Not the point being made
Even if Buffalo drafts a QB early, the team needs a someone better at QB. Thigpen could be a short-term starter and then long-term back-up once the rookie is ready to play.

I just don't want any QB in here
that may offer some sort of “potential”, such that the Front Office then says, “Well, maybe we got our guy in (Tavares Jackson, Campbell, Thigpen, ect), so now we can hold off on picking (Franchise QB).”
Don’t want that at all. My worst fear. Then we waste another 2-3 years while we hope one of those washouts or scrubs beats the odds.
Nope. Sign me up for selecting the best QB in a draft, and that’s it.
by StroudFanClub on Mar 5, 2010 10:43 AM EST up reply actions
I don't think anyone thinks Thigpen is the long term answer
I don’t think Jackson or Thigpen are franchise QB’s, or will develop into them. I think Campbell could in different circumstances.
That said, I have no objection to bringing in Thigpen or Jackson as the bridge to the rookie that the Bills draft this year (if they do so). Kitna bridged to Palmer, Warner to Manning, Brees to Rivers.
And at the time, Kitna was coming off a great year but flamed out and never became the franchise guy. Brees was a bust when Rivers was drafted. Warner was washed up. So the “bridge” guy can be just that, or a great player in the future. I wouldn’t discount the method so quickly.

I’ll go on record as saying i’d rather have Thigpen tahn Jackson, Campbell.
I’d love to see him up in Buffalo – I think his style will, if nothing else, push everyone really hard.

How about this:
If you could somehow look into the future and know for sure that the Bills will draft a First Round QB in one of the next two drafts, then by all means, bring in whoever you want to QB the Bills until that guy is ready.

Nice, WA. Good stuff.
I’ll be updating this throughout the day as I find time. Feel free to drop a comment if you see something happen and I’ll just edit the post.
Kaisertown’s got a story to run at some point today; we’ll probably run it this morning in the event that something actually happens news-wise with the Bills.

Jets
The Jets completely stole Cromartie! I feel like they now have the best 1-2 cornerback combo in the league even though Cromartie has baggage, like 7 kids, eek. But either way no one will be passing on the Jets next season
Ugh… Still nothing…
Staying up, drinking til 3 in that thread last night might not have been the best idea lol. Especially since nothing happened… Except the Lions signing Burelson… to way too much money IMO.

I would be interested in bringing in Adam Terry for a look
Former 2nd round pick, 6 foot 8, 335lbs. Has some decent starting experience on a decent line. Coming off injury, though….
I guess Chan really didn't like Cogs
This was the most surprising event so far in FA
With our line issues I was absolutely convinced that Cogs was going to get tendered, I evidently was wrong. I guess they have some guys targeted for the interior line, either FAs or draft because I don’t think we have enough quality depth to go into the season.
Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...
but
he may not be gone. We just didn’t tender him. If no one signs him, he could be back.
"huge, big, fast, nasty...all those terms"
two great possibilities at NT are available to us
Jamal Williams or Jimmy Kennedy or both
Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...
Jake Delhomme cut by Panthers
Not that we care, but it’s always news when a first-string QB is cut from his team.
I suggested to my buddy this morning that unless you’re the Colts or the Saints, you shouldn’t even try to move the ball on the Jets. Just try your damndest to score on every Special Teams play, and if you fail, just immediately punt the ball back to them. Either play the field position game all day long and get a couple field goals or hope for a Sanchez INT.
Bill Polian and AJ Smith are gone, so there's not the usual balance between "sane" and "others." Ralph has mentally checked out since 1994. It's a very dangerous time. The coalition for reason is extremely weak.
Maybe we could start a special fund between us fans which could be used to send pretty ladies to their rooms the night before the games, we could pay extra to get them to really keeep them up all night. LT used to do that all the time. We could bring back the old traditions!
Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...
From PFT....
Cromartie has at least seven different children with six women and the same paper reported last month he owed $25,000 in child support.
so you may be on to something there…. This guy could end up with more kids than Henry, and McGahee combined!!!!
Disgusting actually….JMHO….
WGR just reported that Fox Sports just reported that Bills are going after WR Kelley Washington
New York City Buffalo Bills Backers

who then BillsNYC reported lol
Well Im glad our names out there at least. Was he with Cinci?

Drafted by Cinci...
played with NE, and Baltimore of late… I liked him coming out of college, but he definitely hasn’t lived up to his potential… Needs someone who can unscrew his head, and put something in there right… Teachers???
I was hoping the Bills could get their hands on Manu. Oh well.

Yeah
Looks like nix & company were being quite honest. They warned us they wouldn’t be very active in free agency. Won’t be surprised if they make some moves to get more picks during draft.
Peppers to Bears
I wonder if that will affect Brett’s decision to come back?
It’s definitely a great move for the Bears, playing Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre twice per year is not easy. Getting a sack producing machine like Peppers to couple with Tommy Harris (assuming they find a way to keep him) with their fantastic LBing core, they should be back to their old selves in 2010
Nothing left to say... the clock is ticking...
6 year deal too
So He’ll be a bear for life now.
"Fan ?" You want to talk about being a fan of the Bills ? Try getting up at 3 AM every Monday to watch their games knowing they'll likely lose. Do this for 18 years and then call yourself a "fan"
WGR...
just reported a bit ago that the Seahawks are looking at bringing in Brandon Marshall. I would be happier if it wasn’t for the fact that taking the Seahawks out of the running for a QB puts the Broncos right back in the hunt.
