A Crazed Idea

Buffalo has serious holes to fill on draft day, the biggest being LT, NT, OLB and QB. This is the latest installment in half baked (or baked to a charcoal like crisp) ideas that I'm inflicting on the FanPosts.

It seems pretty clear that Suh, Okung and McCoy are locks to go in the top 5 in some order. Either Clausen or Bradford is certain to be gone after the 4th pick (Redskins) and there's a chance that both QBs could go in the top 5--particularly if the Rams take a QB at #1. (Sidebar: I could see the Rams negotiating with Bradford, Suh and McCoy and taking the easiest guy to sign a la Reggie Bush-Mario Williams.) The top 5 doesn't really interest me overly much as Buffalo lacks the juice to get there without crippling the draft....which I don't see CHIX doing. The Seahawks have #6, the Browns #7, and the ever unpredictable Al Davis has #8.

The Seahawks have hosted Brandon Marshall, a restricted free agent. Signing him to an offer sheet would cost Seattle the #6 pick, but would leave the Seahawks with the #14. I'm guessing that Denver would be willing to work a deal with Seattle to trade Marshall for the #14 pick, which originally belonged to the Broncos. If Denver blanches at that idea, Buffalo could call and offer Lee Evans for the #14 pick. If Denver goes for it, Buffalo could call Marshall-less Denver about a Evans-#14 trade. Evans, unlike every WR in the draft has caught passes in the NFL...and in spite of shoddy QB play. Al Davis would be another option. Perhaps CHIX could begin the call by telling Davis they've found a way to help him not screw up his draft choice and help his vertical passing game. The point isn't whether Buffalo could get the #8 or #14 for Evans but rather that the Bills might be able to turn Evans into a top 15ish draft pick before draft day.

Instead of waiting for draft day, Buffalo could go after a proven commodity with the #9 pick and sign Jared Gaither to an offer sheet. The use of a poison pill could ensure that the deal went through. The LT slot would be filled while NT, OLB, QB and (now) WR were still crying needs. Buffalo could give the WR position a lick and a promise (why does that sound familiar?) and bring in a free agent WR. Anyone Buffalo brings in would represent a step down from Evans--it's just a question of how big of a step. Robbing Peter (WR) to pay Paul (OL) would at least help ensure that the QB (whomever it is) would remain upright more of the time.

Buffalo could use the pick from the Evans trade (or #9 if the Bills cut to the chase and convinced the Ravens to trade Gaither for Evans) to take a NT, and possibly the first NT off the board. In theory Buffalo could take a QB if Clausen or Bradford slid but that doesn't seem likely. CHIX could then target a OLB in the 2nd and either a QB in the 3rd...or trade back into the late 2nd to pick up a QB.

Buffalo would come away from the offseason with a proven starting caliber LT (Gaither), one of the first (and possibly the first) NTs off the board, a second round OLB and a second or third round QB. The bad news is that the WR position would take a hit in the form of replacing Lee Evans with some journeyman.

The stay-put option would have Buffalo taking either one of the first NTs or the second or third (completely unproven at the NFL level) LTs off the board at #9, addressing the other position likely in the second, and either OLB or QB in the third....with the odd position out being left until the fourth round. But the WR position wouldn't be as dismal.

Poll
Should Buffalo entertain the idea of swapping Lee Evans for a top 15ish draft pick and then use that pick to sign a guy like Jared Gaither to a poison-pill offer sheet?
Make it so.

No, Evans isn't worth a top 15 pick to anyone.

No, robbing Peter is lunacy even if you claim you're doing it to help Paul.

Trade Evans for Gaither (and try to get a pick in the deal) and then send a 3rd to Arizona for Bouldin. Buffalo keeps the 1st round pick, get a quality OT and signs Bouldin to a contract that keeps him here for longer than Evans’ current deal.

I put this on a different thread a couple of days ago. Of course with Bouldin off the board the WR options are considerably thinner.

First, let me say this is very well thought, as usual......

this scenerio really scares the hell out of me. The thought of getting rid of our biggest scoring threat just makes me nervous, even if I understand that having him means nothing if we can’t get the ball to him. Why do you have to make me think so hard on a Sunday night.

Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!

You could have read it on Monday morning. Would that have made it any better?

I’ll take converting 3rd downs (because the team is better at run blocking and/or protecting the QB on 3rd and 5 or less) over the big play potential. Part of my reasoning, such as it is, revolves around the fact that Evans will again face consistent double coverage this year. He has demonstrated that he can’t produce under those conditions…..so it wouldn’t be all that much different if he were on another team and we had some no-name WR not getting open.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

Yes it would have made it better. I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight......

According to Rotoworld, Gaither may be had for less than a first if a trade can be negotiated.

If they’d take a 2nd in 2010 and a 3rd in 2011 (or vice versa) I’d hope CHIX would consider it.

agree 100%. Would be a fantastic deal for us.

by CBATL32 on Mar 7, 2010 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

It would be crazy to trade Evans when we don’t have any other WR on the roster who is a proven NFL receiver. Hardy, Johnson, and even Shawn Nelson have yet to demonstrate that they can be consistent targets, and Roscoe is worthless. In effect, it would be like telling opponents outright that we have no air attack, which would leave them free to focus on eliminating our ground game. If we had a surplus of WR’s it might make some sense, but it’s just the opposite. The more logical step would be to trade a CB, where we do have a surplus.

by Macktruck on Mar 7, 2010 9:03 PM EST reply actions

Lee Evans is not worth a top 15 pick

It’s crazy to think anybody, other than Jerry Jones, would do that.

Any thoughts on Evans for Gaither?

How good is Gaither?

Is he better than whoever we could draft at OT? Yes, I know there is some risk, but there is also some upside.

by Joe P. on Mar 7, 2010 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

I suspect there’s more upside with a draft prospect. There’s more risk as well and that doesn’t take into account whether or not a draft pick would be ready to start week 1.

Why would Baltimore want Evans now?

They just added Boldin.

Bouldin has been a success when paired with a good WR. The Ravens could feature 2 good WRs (Bouldin and Evans) to clear out the box for their run game. Although I hope the Rotoworld bit turns out to be true and Buffalo can get Gaither for less than a first rounder.

Gaither for a 2nd....

… done. But Baltimore would want more.

The Ravens might take less than a 1st but the report doesn’t suggest what ‘less’ might entail.

So, would the Ravens keep Gaither if offered a first- or second-round pick? It’s a decision they might soon have to face.

If the asking price were a 2nd this year and a 3rd next (or vice versa) I’d hope the Bills would consider it.

how about swapping 1st round picks? 25 to 9 should be close to a late round 2 & 3 combo. Pick #25 could yield Kindle, Hughes, Cody, Griffen, Dunlap, etc.

Why wouldn't they just re-sign Mason then?

And draft a speedy WR in the middle rounds to fill the role that a guy like Evans would fill there??

If they don't want to sign a guy like Mason, without having to give anything up

Why would they trade their starting LT for Lee Evans?

Can’t they just stick with Mark Clayton?

Bouldin has been a success when paired with a good WR.

Bouldin’s also had success when playing with a crappy WR and with Jeff Blake throwing to him.

Like the idea, but I don't think Evans has that kind of worth.

And I’d rather have Evans than anyone’s 2nd or 3rd rounders.

There is the danger that Evans may be too old to contribute in 2-3 years, when Buffalo could make a playoff run. But he is an outside receiver that hasn’t taken many shots. Marvin Harrison caught 95 balls at age 35 as an outside receiver that relied on speed. So Evans may still have a prominent role on this team in 2012-ish.

poison pill

there is no such thing as a poison pill contract in a non capped year

if we could work out a deal to trade this years 4th and 6th and next years 1st to get gaither i would then we could trade down a little and grab trent williams for the right side and trade up in the 2nd and grab mt cody

I've never met a QB who can throw off his back

by Gpluehri on Mar 7, 2010 10:33 PM EST reply actions

Well, yes and no.

Say the language of the contract we offer Gaither has language like “If Gaither plays more than two games in a year in the state of Maryland he will automatically become the highest-paid OT in the league.” That’s a poison pill contract and perfectly legit without a salary cap.

by MattRichWarren on Mar 9, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

If I were writing contracts

I’d make the poison pill stipulations totally absurd and hilarious.

“Jared Gaither will be the highest paid OT in the league if a WR on his team yells ’I’m a %*$#ing man’ after every reception”

“Jared Gaither will be the highest paid OT in the league if his QB has a unibrow”

“Jared Gaither will be the highest paid player on his team if the team’s uniform has purple in it”

If we traded away NEXT years 1st...

I would have to find something tall to jump off of.

Next year, is when we get our franchise QB. But we will need our #1 to do it.

Mallett and Luck declare. Locker is the only senior that currently rates as a high first rounder.

Pat Devlin rates a 2nd half first rounder could move higher.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Sorry, but Lee Evans isn't worth a top 15 pick

If Boldin is traded for only a 3rd round pick then Lee Evans certainly won’t be worth a top 15 pick. Boldin is younger, has been MUCH more productive, and he actually blocks so he would help a team in the running game as well. No chance for the aforementioned scenario unfortunately. Even crazy Al Davis would balk at this.

Boldin was born in October 3rd 1980

Lee Evans was born March 11th 1981

But other tan that I agree with you.

okay

Not worht it in anyway. Frist off no Nt in this draft is worth taking before the 15th pick. Suh And Mcoy are not NT they Would be A DE in a 3-4. One gathier isnt worth giving up Evans for him. Iam not giving up my best recevier for a guy who cant stay on the field. Plus If he was good he would be starting LT for Ravens But he is going to lose the job to there rookie from last yr.Why not just Draft A good Young LT who Has many yrs on his tires instead. Like trent Willams from OK who is gonna BE a goodie. Then Draft Cam Thomas FRom NC. Then LETs BUILd this team the rt way. and wait for a good QB class to come out like next yr. Every one back BUffalo just wants to get to the playoffs. Well that isnt good enough They need to build a team to get to the super bowl. That should be the attuide of the team and city. to make it all the way and WIN.Only the playoff hope is for the losing ATTUide inthe city

by smov656 on Mar 8, 2010 7:40 PM EST reply actions

From what I heard Suh would actually be good in a 3-4 but McCoy would have to play 4-3, not sure.
