Bills legend wants Edwards at QB - AFC East Blog - ESPN
"They've got to stop messing with the quarterback," Reed said. "Put the quarterback in there, let him make mistakes, do what you got to do. Don't start pulling him and doing this and doing that. I think they need to put Trent back in regardless."

1-on-1 interview with Green – Inside The Bills
"Primarily I’m a right tackle, but whatever I’m called upon to do and wherever I’m needed I’m ready to do what I have to do to get this team over the hump and get it back to the playoffs and give this town what they expect out of the Bills organization," said Green.

Cornell Green: Swapping Coasts - Silver And Black Pride
"Let me be the first to say good luck Buffalo. I'll take Langston Walker over Cornell Green any day of the week, especially on Sundays. Wasn't their G.M. the same guy who bashed the Raiders a little while ago? What kind of drugs is that guy on? Somebody in Buffalo failed to do their homework." More comments from Raiders fans here.

Bills find a tackle | ProFootballTalk.com

"Buffalo needs warm bodies on the offensive line, but Green didn't seem like a player that was going to get much more than the veteran's minimum. Of course, he may have to start in Buffalo."

BillBoard: Bills sign O-tackle
"Green is not an exciting signing, and at 33 (he'll turn 34 in August), who knows how much he has left. But the Bills had to do something. With Brad Butler's sudden retirement, the Bills were left with Demetrius Bell, Kirk Chambers, Jamon Meredith and Andre Ramsey at tackle. Green is certainly a step up from that. He immediately becomes the favorite to start at right tackle. The starter on the left side will likely come in the first round of the draft."

Veteran tackle signs with Bills : Buffalo Bills : The Buffalo News
"The Raiders chose not to re-sign Green because of his age (he'll be 34 in August) and his uneven play (he committed 12 penalties in 12 games last season). Also, he was arrested in Florida a year ago this month on a domestic violence charge." He had this to say about the charge, "Last year the issue I went through was unfortunate," Green said. "I learned and grew from that and I just moved past that. My girl and I are together now and we're just looking forward to the future and being a part of the Buffalo Bills."

OL Green signs with Bills - BuffaloBills.com
"He’s a first class guy," said Green of Gailey. "He wants to change the environment here and make it family so the locker room is good and have people that are accountable to what he wants to do. He wants all of us to come up and work out and make it a positive climate. I’m very excited to work with coach. He gave me a lot of good insight and told me what direction he wanted to go in and I want to do everything in my power to help him do that."

Not much sizzle, but Bills order a tackle - AFC East Blog - ESPN
Green sounded impressed with new Bills coach Chan Gailey. "No. 1, he wants to change the vibe in here," Green said. "He holds people accountable. He wants to get all of us to come up and workout and just change the climate to make it positive. He's going to ask a lot of us to work hard and be productive in the community. We're professionals, and it's what we do."

Tebow will work out for Bills, Seahawks | ProFootballTalk.com
"Gil Brandt of NFL.com reports that Tebow also will work out for the Seahawks and the Bills the day after his Pro Day session. "The Bills have been vague about their quarterback situation. They have hinted at going into the season with the guys on the roster, with Trent Edwards getting one more chance to be the starter. is hilarious. the way they talk it seems they are now contenders for the Super Bowl with Green being gone. If there is 1 team that has been more inept than the Bills the last few years it’s been the Raiders.
Nobody on this site things Green is the answer. He is depth at a position that is relatively thin, that’s it.

by gatornation on Mar 9, 2010 7:44 AM EST reply actions

Many of them are thanking their stars they aren’t Bills fans FWIW.

by MattRichWarren on Mar 9, 2010 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

Possible depth

Depth, spot starter and that’s if he even makes the team. Wouldn’t shock me if the Bills just signed him to motivate Bell and Meredith and Green gets released at the end of camp.

"Whether or not you write well, write bravely"

by Goose22 on Mar 9, 2010 7:56 AM EST reply actions

Yes, I’m sure the Bills paid him millions in a signing bonus to cut him in training camp so they can ‘motivate’ their current players.

by Pistol on Mar 9, 2010 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not certain, but I think it’s a safe assumption. You don’t sign someone in the first few days of free agency for $3 million/year without some signing bonus and/or guaranteed money.

I would guess at least $3 million is in bonus form.

by Pistol on Mar 9, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

the fact that

he has 2 working legs might motivate the other O linemen….something to aspire to.

Let’s hope and pray that Green gets cut in August, signing bonus or not. He is the kind of player that moves your team backwards on offense. Bell, Meredith, and even Andre Ramsey are much better OT’s despite their inexperience.

by Macktruck on Mar 9, 2010 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

What?
Bell, Meredith, and even Andre Ramsey are much better OT’s despite their inexperience.

How can you even possibly knows this? Andre Ramsey took what, one snap, last year?

No, it’s something a long time Bills fan who has watched so many of these foolish signings over the years would say in sheer exasperation. And as for Ramsey, he played the better part of one game, replacing someone who was injured (can’t remember who at this point — there were so many of them), and did reasonably well under the conditions.

by Macktruck on Mar 9, 2010 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

I remember one false start. He’s more penalty-prone than Cornell Green!

by MattRichWarren on Mar 9, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

I'm still dealing with this Cornell Green signing.

Not sure what to think. When Nix was in San Diego, the chargers had to face him twice a year. When Gailey was in Kansas City, they too had to face him twice a year. Yet the only thing he brings to the table is that he has been in the league (and I mean all over it) for a long time. Yet the penalties, the domestic violence charge and the fact that the Raiders were the only team to really provide him with quality playing time doesn’t add up to 3 years and $9M dollars. What we do know is that we need tackles. I am convinced that D. Bell is our starting LT in 2010 until we bring someone else in that can flat out beat him for the spot. Brad Butler’s retirement left a huge hole at RT which we had to use J. Scott, J. Meredith, K. Chambers and Ramsey in that position. This tells me that the FO believes that Green is the best option at RT going into camp, unless anyone of the three above can beat him out. I do believe that we will draft a tackle early in the 2010 draft but how early is debatable. This person also will compete for one of the two tackle spots. We also know that Gailey wants to run the ball, I assume he means like a 2:1 ratio. Green likes to run block and is noted for his run blocking over his pass protection, yet after all this analysis I am still a little confused why we would spend so much money on some one so do I dare say “mediocre”. What are we not seeing here?

This is like dumping a new puzzle from it's box. Now let's start putting the peices together. I guess this is what we all asked for.

by VanScottM on Mar 9, 2010 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Van, I think you are seeing it very clearly. As Pat Moran put it on BuffaloSportsDaily.com, this signing is a real “mystery.” It just doesn’t make any sense.

by Macktruck on Mar 9, 2010 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

I'd Quess

That they do indeed draft a LT, maybe with #9. If said player is good enough he’ll start. Bell would spell RT. Not knowledgable on salaries so can’t explain the high salary paid to Green. I too thought of fact that he run blocks good. Don’t forget Buffalo has to overpay in most cases due to desirability factor.

by buffalobacker on Mar 9, 2010 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

Its disheartening to see what raider fans think of Green. I must be honest, if raider fans think the team can be better without someone, its an issue.

But on the bright side, Tom Cable liked him….. oof

by BillsfanDan on Mar 9, 2010 8:59 AM EST reply actions

Cornell Green is a very average RT, who’s a very solid run-blocker but average to below-average pass-blocker with a propensity to commit a ton of falsestarts. However, what he has going for him is his experience. Ideally, Demetrius Bell locks down the job as RT and Green is only depth, but I still think we would be OK with Cornell Green for a season, though no more than that.

"The one commonality in both places (Oakland and Buffalo) is an aging owner who keeps interfering too much. Ralph Wilson continually butts his nose in the football operation and tells the team who to draft"

I sure hope so. The penalties have to stop this year. Perhaps Gailey will be more of a disciplinarian with regards to that.

From the Reed write....
“They’ve got to stop messing with the quarterback,” Reed said. “Put the quarterback in there, let him make mistakes, do what you got to do. Don’t start pulling him and doing this and doing that.”
“They don’t have a guy who tells the coaches [after a locker-room meeting] they’ve got to go, ’We’re going to sit here and talk among ourselves and figure out what we’ve got to do.’ That’s what we did. Thurman and Bruce [Smith] and Jim, all those guys were vocal. If we lost two games in a row, we’re talking. Somebody’s got to get right.

“I don’t see that much of a pulse. Accountability was prevalent. ‘Hey, man, I’m counting on you. If you don’t do it, then we’ve got to find somebody else.’ "

Two of the main things we’ve been discussing for years now.. The QB killer, DJ is gone, quit messing with their heads, pick one, put him in, let him play… Period….
And accountability… What more needs to be added to Reed’s remarks??? A locker room take charge presence.. Someone who’s willing to take a team mate by the scruff of the neck, and tell him he messed up.. But I like the last part even more… A willingness to go to the coaches and say, “this guy doesn’t fit, get rid of him”…..

by Cinga on Mar 9, 2010 9:28 AM EST reply actions

Who do we have that’s going to say things like that? There are no bruce smiths, jim kellys, andre reeds, or thurman thomases in that locker room. You’re telling me that aaron schobel is going to go to the coaching staff and say, we need a new qb? We simply don’t have a player or group of players for that.

by quantumuprising on Mar 9, 2010 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe it is time to draft Tebow :-)

A married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing!

by Joe P. on Mar 9, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t hate the Green signing as much as I did yesterday. I still think it’s an overpay, but it’s only money, right? Worst case they’re cutting him in a year. It’s a stop gap solution so it’s not really worth getting worked up over.

Looking at Pro Football Focus Green was the 48th rated (out of 77) tackle last year. And if you look closer, he was actually slightly above average in run blocking, pass blocking, and screens. What killed his ranking is all of those penalties. How much of that is correctable at this point in his career? Probably not a lot, but if you cut it in half he probably moves up to the low 30s, making him a passable, though below-average, starting tackle.

http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_position.php?tab=by_position&season=2009&pos=T&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1

And with OL not getting much attention, except when they make an obvious bad move (penalty or blown assignment) it’s not hard to see why Raider fans won’t miss him. It’d be like the Bills missing Bell’s production from this year.
