QB vs. OT
Brian's Mock Draft has got me thinking about the team's first round pick. I have been asking myself a lot of questions about what should be done, and feel like it could go either way. Can the Bills pass on a potential franchise QB with the 9 pick? Is the hole at LT just too big to ignore in the first round? If the Bills go OT and Trent Edwards "leads" the team to a 7-9 record in 2010, will he keep the job? If the Bills pass on a potential face of the franchise in Clausen, will the fans revolt? Finally, how much should leadership factor into the equation? The team lacks the spark and leadership necessary to be successful - should that also be considered when evaluating talent?
I"m leaning towards taking Clausen if he is available at 9, and then address OT with the 2nd round pick (or potentially trading back into the first). Thoughts?
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I hope we go BPA in the first.
That’s where the impact talent is(generallu). You have 6 other rounds to fill holes. In the first you should try to get game changers IMO
Are you a fan of CJ Spiller? he might be the best game-changer available.

I like Spiller.
But when I say gamebreaker’s I mean any position on the board. As long as the player chosen has elite talent. That could be an OT or a QB, I just don’t want the Bill’s to lock into drafting a certain position.
yeah
I’d take Clausen at 9. He won’t be there though. I think O/L can be addressed in later rds. So yeah, I’d like to see a impact player taken with 9th pick. Be it Offense or defense, I don’t care. With emphasis on running this yr. Spiller would be great pick in my opinion.
What has Clausen done or shown in college that makes him a impact player???

Clausen
Cannon arm, nfl ready, played in pro style. Arguable the best of a weak QB class. To answer your question though, not much. It’s his abilities and potenial I’d say.

I dont want any of the QB’s if they are available at #9. We need to shore up our O Line and possibly get Tebow or Lefevour later on in the draft.
Now isn’t the time to throw a flashy new toy at the beginning of this massive overhaul.
Understood, but...
if it is a 3-year plan, does it make sense to bring in Clausen and let him sit for a year (or half a season)? If Okung is off the board (and possibly Davis and/or Campbell), do you want to take the 3rd best OT?

What's the point?
Sitting a rookie QB for a year, while the current starter gets destroyed every game b/c his line can’t block for him does no good for anyone. In 2011, the same rookie that just sat for a year will be thrown behind a still inexperienced line that will struggle to protect him.
Our team will not go 7-9 this year. We have no offense ex. Fred Johnson, and our defense is swiss cheese. We’ll finish with a top 5 pick, and hopefully draft Locker or Mallett next year. But at least our line may have more talent that will help and not hinder our franchise QB’s development.
The Eternal Pessimist...
The point is, if Chix sees Clausen as a franchise QB, they might be willing to draft him and let him develop similar to what some other teams have done (Bengals/Palmer, Chargers/Rivers, Giants/Manning, Broncos/Cutler). They can still add OT talent in the second round and beyond. It isn’t a perfect set-up, but could be part of a long term plan.

Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers had good lines to develop behind.
Carson Palmer performance has degraded as his line has.
Cutler though really shows it.
He had a much better line in Denver and did well, while Kyle Orton wasn’t that great behind a crappy line.
They switch teams, and perform about the same, if you are a pocket passer you need a good OL to unlock your potential.
If you are a mobile QB who can extend plays with your feet, and throw accurately on the run, like Aaron Rodgers and Rothlisberger then you can do OK and get by with a substandard line.
They switch tea
There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Anderson
No they pay Derek Anderson for a year so the fanbase doesn’t riot and then draft Locker or Mallet next year. You have to give a rookie quarterback a line or there’s no way he’ll succeed.
Obviously this is just an opinion and I’ve been wrong about quarterback prospects in the past (but I have a pretty good record) but I don’t think Clausen is the answer. In addition to all the knocks against him made by Todd McShay (who though people hate on him, was and is a succesful scout) he is a California quarterback and Cali QBs haven’t had the best record in Buffalo. Even Jim Kelly was begging for the Bills to not draft another California Quarterback. Also, I was living in Knoxville when his brother Casey was with the Vols and everyone on campus hated him for the same reasons I’ve heard NDers had problems with Clausen….walked around like he owned the place, thought he was better than everyone…and Knoxville is predisposed to worship their players. In addition, Clausen doesn’t step into all his throws and other than pocket awareness, arm strength, and an ability to read the field, stepping into throws in the face of pressure is the best predictor of success in my opinion. Plus, I happen to think Locker and Mallet will be better.
well, hes also shown a remarkable accuracy with out routes, some of the harder passes to make, while only throwing what? like 3 interceptions? His timing is pretty damn good

GET READY TO PLAY ON SUNDAY
IT HAS TO BE THE RIGHT Q. B YOU GET JUST ANOTHER Q.B from the draft just to get him and he gets kill come game time EVERYBODY is going to be crying I TOLD YOU SO and then we start ponting FINGERS >>>>>>>>>>> LETS JUST HOPE that who ever we get is ready to play, not to say well he needs time to develop look is football is not BRAIN SURGERY , and so its a sport play and make it happend , I want this guys to come and say we are goig to win every game we PLAY not like well im young I come to learn from the other guys MAMBA SAMBA LAMBA CRAP get ready to play season start lets do this BILLS FANS
QB vs OT
Probably a moot point but we could address both in the draft couldn’t we? Clausen will most likely be gone at #9, but we could address OT and still pick-up a QB in later rds. If Clausen is gone at 9 then get BPA.
The LInes are far more important...
to build into a cohesive unit. Drafting a QB (any of those available) with the 9th pick would, IMHO, be disastrous. There are QB’s available in this draft class (Tebow, McCoy, La Favor, Pike) who may develop into quality starters in a year or so but ONLY if the line issues are addressed now and they can be afforded quality protection when it is their time to shine.

lol
so pass on A stronge LT class For a Weak class no thanku. Take the OT this year deal with the QB situition we have then go in next yr for the franchise QB Thats Gonna be A great class of qbs
Why compare the strength of the position when the only thing that matters in the decision is the strength of the top players? Sorry, but I’d take Sam Bradford over every OT in this year’s class. And if we can get a QB we like, doesn’t the strength of the OT class help in that we can grab one later?
All these hypotheticals are great and all, but the only thing that matters in the final decision is what’s already happened.

I’d take Okung or Baluga over Bradford..
If Bradford took the pounding Trent has the past couple years, We could easily chalk up one more failed QB I bet. It doesn’t surprise me the last QB we successfully developed had a good line to start and a developed QB with plenty of success in Bledsoe crumpled with the crappy lines he had protecting him here.
Go back and look at the line Kelly had his first four years as a Bill, If Jim Kelly had to play his first 4 years with an OL like what we have the past few years, he may never have become the player he did. OBD hasn’t put together a top tier OL together in a very long time.

The trenches win games and championships
Look at the recent Super Bowls, how many teams got there with weak ol? If the Bills don’t fix the ol it doesn’t who the QB is. After last year’s performance the whole line needs revamping and this year’s draft seems like a good one to do that.
OT in the first round
They can get their QB next season.
