Poll: Big Ben for No. 9 - would you pull the trigger?

As reported on the front page, ESPN's Adam Schefter opened the flood gates this morning:

Pittsburgh has begun contacting teams to trade Ben Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick. At least one team considering it.

Roethlisberger, meanwhile, has been handed a provisional six-game suspension by the NFL for violating the personal conduct policy.

I want to know you opinion. Pretend you are General Manager of the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers call to offer you Big Ben for the No. 9 overall pick in tomorrow's NFL Draft. Would you make the deal?

It wouldn't be an easy decision, but ultimately, I think I would turn the offer down. To me, being proud of my team is more important than winning at any cost. With Big Ben as the face of the franchise, I really don't know if I could have the level of pride in the Buffalo Bills that I would like. Character is important to me and that's why, ultimately, I would decline the offer. But we all have different opinions and values so I want to find out, what would you do, and why?

Florio thinks the Bills should trade #9 for Ben.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/21/pftv-fixes-the-bills/

I voted NO, I think Ben has been great (maybe even underrated), but has had too many concussions, and too poor of a reputation (even before Georgia) to consider making him our franchise QB.

They are hard to play but not hard to beat.

The concussion issue is a good point

And could be the most important factor in any potential trade…

good point. i voted yes, and would have definitively said yes, but now i would rethink that choice due to his concussions. something i didn’t even think about.

The most important factor? Not the fact that he’s one sexual assault away from a very serious suspension, and a scum bag to boot?

If we’re going to devalue Lynch because of his behavioral problems, then the same has to be done for this tool.

I voted no

because I really want to see who the Bills pick with this new regime’s first first.

I voted yes

There aren’t many QBs who can make a play behind this offensive line. He’s shown the ability to extend the life of a play, and that’s what the team needs. I don’t know if this team has the luxury of worrying about off field issues.

What he does on the field is what matters when deciding the trade value.

On the field matters? That’s why teams are trading superbowl MVP’s for 5th round picks?

His off the field antics impact on the field play AND the bottom line. Not to mention that at some point, it goes well beyond the game and needs to be addressed in a wider audience.

Considering he’s going to miss almost 40% of the games this year – and potentially a lot more in the future if he gets in any kind of trouble again – his value goes down. He’s proven himself capable of making a wide array of bad choices. The idea of trading anything with real value for him is a bad choice, too.

Did you suspect Vick of being a dogfighter/criminal before the issue arose? How can you surmise where he’s at, now? Also, from a quarterback perspective, he’s a lousy passer and team leader.

by jj24 on Apr 21, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

before vick was brought down on dog charges

he had a lot of immaturity issues surrounding his career (flicking off the fans, the weed bottle, etc). since his return (i get that its one year) nothing has surfaced about him being anything less than a normal upstanding citizen. so yes vick is a FAR FAR FAR less rick to get suspended again than ben.

i mentioned nothing about their abilities as qbs, just simply addressing the likelihood of ben or vick getting suspended…

Stockpiling picks

I kno this may be a little crazy, but if you were a team that needed a couple different pieces and rebiulding it wouldnt be a bad idea to try and get one of those pieces via trade. I kno Ben has been trouble but he could help complete the puzzle and the picks we could get via trade from Pittsburgh for him would be well worth it. Any teams that trades for Ben is taking the risk, and that will be shown by the picks the recieve for the trade. This would give Buffalo the picks they need to re-biuld and poor roster.

Franchise quarterback. Can deal with a lousy line. Wins big games.

I’d hate to cheer for him too, but I’d also hope that a change of scenery and this hefty suspension could really wake him up. He might not be beyond redemption.

Beyond that, I think the odds on him turning around can’t be much worse than Clausen/Bradford/McCoy being busts. Oh, and they would be much more expensive busts.

It re-established, for me, how much more fun and inspirational sports can be when you genuinely like and respect the guys you are rooting for.

I’m conflicted on the question at hand, but I think it’s silly to think that he’s a potential suspension risk down the road. He’s guilty of being an entitled jerk. It’s not like he has an addiction. I don’t see him as any more of a risk than any other player in the league right now.

by Pistol on Apr 21, 2010 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

It’s not like he has an addiction.

getting young ladies drunk, so you can have your way with them, IS an addiction, and one not so easily dropped as some seem to think..

or are sexual in nature, they more often than not show an addiction, and is something incredibly hard for someone to shake off or over-come. not saying he cant do that or other havent, but when the instances are sexual in nature, they usually tend to lend themselves to be a pretty deep problem.

in other words

marshawn was just plain dumb, but his actions dont speak to a worse problem. if the allegations against ben are true, it shows a deep-seeded problem with the man, one that will take a lot of time and effort in order for him address/fix. this isnt a simply “suspend him and he will learn his lesson” type of problem, this is one that will need him to completely re-evaluate his life and how he lives it. im sorry but i dont see big ben being very productive while he is doing that, and if hes not doing that, well he will end up in jail eventually.

I'd say yes

That isn’t very much to ask for when you think about it. Roethlisberger can extend plays and has a big arm. But a factor to consider is the looming expected suspension.

oh hell yeah

It cracks me up that all the no voters act like they have never done anything stupid, or even worse than what he did. We don’t know the facts. But one fact I do know is that this franchise hasn’t had an elite Qb since Kelly retired, which we could resolve with the #9 pick. No brainer

So i guess we all know that you’re a scumbag. Thanks for the heads up.

by jj24 on Apr 21, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Hell no

The guy doesn’t learn. The allegations in Vegas (whether they were true or not) should have been a wakeup call to not put himself in a situation where there could even be the appearance of something happening. Then he goes and gets himself in another mess (again, whether the allegations are true or not, he put himself in a bad situation – what is a 27 year old multi-millionaire doing hanging out with underage girls in a dive bar?). Clearly either no lesson was learned or the guy’s ego is so big he thinks he’s bulletproof. Put that together with the motorcycle incident, the other girl who said he exposed himself, and god only knows what else that hasn’t come out yet, and the guy becomes too much of a risk to bet the 9th overall pick on.

by jj24 on Apr 21, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

As much as I'd prefer him to Tebow

I don’t want him that bad. Not only would I feel icky about him being the QB of my favorite team, I think I’d rather have a stud OT with that pick than a QB.

Plus at 6 games suspended (or even 4) you’re talking almost 1/4 – 1/2 of the season being gone before he’s in the mix with no guarantee he’ll be around in years after that. Seems like a waste of a #9 pick to get a guy who will actually repulse parts of your fan base who then can only play half a year and probably won’t be too happy about going from Pittsburg to Buffalo.

No…Give me a stud OT or NT or a lot of things, but don’t bring me a guy who’s name I’ll hate to learn to spell.

by FrankL on Apr 21, 2010 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

And prefer him to Tebow from a "QB" perspective

Clearly Tebow is a much, much better guy. I’d rather have him over the house for dinner, etc. I just don’t make much of Tim as a QB.

by FrankL on Apr 21, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

No

Why would Buffalo want a QB with so much bad press? He shouldn’t even be in the league IMHO. People need to wake up. Why do we allow sports figures do get away with breaking the law? I’ll find a new team to root for if they pick up Ben. To vote yes is like condoning his actions. No thanks….

Ben will have served his suspension; how would trading for Ben be any different than all of the Bills fans wanting the franchise to sign Michael Vick? Major difference – Super Bowl W’s. Hopefully he will have learned his lesson and want to change himself for the better. Buffalo could not do better with a Round 1 pick.

Something I posted on the MRW thread...

Big Ben is a proven winner and an alleged scumbag who is an accusation or two from missing most (all?) of a season. Put that aside and assume that CHIX believes in Big Ben….and possibly unicorns. What kind of deal could Buffalo offer?

I would not trade #9 for Roethlisberger straight across. Instead I’d propose to trade 9, 41 and a conditional 2011 2nd (on, you know, Ben not drawing another suspension) for Big Ben and 18. The Steelers get the value equivalent of a top 10 pick (about the 8th overall selection) and an actual top 10 pick (9, to be precise). The Bills get a franchise QB and a mid 1st round pick….without crippling CHIX’s rebuilding efforts.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

As an aside, is anyone else a little uneasy with suspending guys who haven’t even been charged with anything? Lynch was suspended after being arrested for pot and having a gun (illegal in CA) in his car. Vick was suspended for a year (or was it two?) after spending time in a federal pen.

I can see the union reining in the Commish in the next collective bargining agreement and getting suspensions applied when charges are actually field.

the case in ga is a lil more complicated than that

there are several witnesses, and the simple act of destroying the tapes sheds more credence to her accusation. the thing in tahoe was very shady and im not sure i believe her (although the new incident certainly gives her story more credence).

with that said, being accused of sexual assault and having it be a fabrication is probably one of the worst things a woman can do.

Not an issue at all in my mind. Part of the reason he’s getting knocked for this is because he keeps putting himself in situations where allegations like this can be placed on him (locked in a backroom with a 20 year old and his bodyguards blocking the door).

This is basically the NFL protecting it’s image and informing it’s players to make better choices about what they do and how they do it.

What happens...

When these occurences happen and the accuser gets paid off not to talk? It’s all about perception of the NFL and the million dollar marketing campaign. I know a lot of people that gave up on the NBA because of the perception that the players were thugs… Me I never forgave the NBA for letting the Braves leave town.

If he doesn’t appeal, it will be because he knew he dodged a bullet. Most appeals come from players who are already found guilty of whatever it is they got suspended for – they just want to shorten the penalty. Ben’s silence could say lots about the situation. If he fights the suspension, then I may be more likely to believe he’s not as guilty as I suspect he is.
