The Bills should be thrilled to have Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen drop into their laps but word is they may not take him even if he is available. In fact, there are plenty of rumblings that Buffalo could opt for Florida’s Tim Tebow with this pick! For now I am going to give Buffalo the benefit of the doubt and assume they are smart enough to realize that passing on Clausen would be a monumental mistake.

Clausen
Has the date of Clausen’s visit with Buffalo been announced anywhere yet?
Just say no...to Trent Edwards at QB.
he just said in an interview with McShay on ESPN
that he is heading to Buffalo very soon. Not sure what that means.

McShay’s an absolute jackass…none bigger in the entire sports media and that’s saying a lot.

couldn't argue with Simmons
Fortunately, he’s easy to avoid and I haven’t read him since 2003 or so. McShay on the other hand is EVERYWHERE this time of year and can’t be avoided if you enjoy watching sports on TV or listening to sports on the radio or reading about sports on the internet…He’s the worst at least from February through April…year round, I’ll nominate the Mikes on ESPN or Peter King…90% of the Football Night in America cast on NBC are on my list too, but like Simmons, they’re easy enough to avoid.
"We want Jimmy. We want Jimmy." -a scene from "Hoosiers" (and does Chan Gailey sort of resemble Coach Norman Dale a little?)
it is preposterous
that NBC uses the same guy for Football Night in America as they do for their hateful political program anchor. Itd be the equivalent of FOX letting Sean Hannity do football games. Its just stupid.

I’m nodding in total agreement here.

the worst part is
as you noted, they surround him with guys like Tiki Barber which makes it even harder to watch.

doesnt change anything
I couldnt care less about his credentials. He spends every day as an anchor for a show where he mocks and de-grades other people because they dont share his beliefs. He doesnt belong on football night.
"you just have to know there's always going to be adversity. None of these games are going to be easy. Nothing will be given to us" - Paul Posluszny
But it’s not like Sean Hannity has a background in it. Olberman does. Sean Hannity’s background is as a general contractor (Wikipedia – best possible information) so it would be like Hannity moonlighting as a bartender one night a week. As long as he doesn’t spout political stuff on FNIA (or while bartending) I’m OK with the job he does. But then again, I can separate the opinions on his talk show from what he does on his football broadcasts.

I know people will forever debate the merits of clausen vs. tebow etc. If we take a tackle in the first round and tebow in the second, ill deal with it. if we skip clausen in the first round and take another qb in later rounds, i won’t like it, but i’ve been waiting 15 years for a good qb, ill wait longer. But if we pick tebow instead of clausen in the first round, i’m going to put team names into a hat and become a fan of someone else.
At this point we’re all just basing this stuff on opinions, there’s no need for melodrama. My feeling is that I just don’t see the kind of separation between the top tier QBs (Bradford, Clausen, McCoy) and the guys who will be around later in the draft to warrant a 1st rd pick, let alone a Niner.
i meant, its with a touch of sarcasm, but i wouldn’t call it melodrama.
All i know is, i was four years old and i remember the bills playing the giants in the super bowl. I grew up around all the glory moments. And for the rest of the formative years of my life, the bills have been nothing but a mismanaged disaster. Taking tim tebow is not a disaster, but if he’s taken in the first round with our current needs and with clausen still on the board, that is a MONUMENTAL misstep…and just another in a line of countless ones.

one thing i’ve learned is never, ever beleive any of these pre-draft reports
We got the tools, We got the talent
Well, I grew up watching the Bisons back when they were the farm club for the great 90s Indians team so I am a huge fan of the Tribe to this day. Like the Bills, they are now in a rebuild. However I know lots of western NYers are yanks fans. ugh.
My first baseball and basketball games...
The Indians and Cavs are the only MLB and NBA teams I will even watch… and it’s not like I’ll put an investment into them.
Other than that, I could care less that those pro sports even existed. The college levels are interesting, but the pro setup is just stupid. I dislike the NBA less than MLB, but still, could care less.
I love playing baseball and basketball as sports, but hate watching them because they both seem meaningless and inflated at the pro level.

I wonder if people are just guessing theyre uninterested in Clausen because the entire media world loves to discuss Tebow. I see Clausen’s stock rising quite a bit the next 2 weeks.
I’m beginning to get beyond his attitude concerns. I know next to nothing about him, outside of youtube video, so it’s not fair for me to dismiss his ability to help the Bills.

How, do you have some info that I don't? I see it the other way around,
Clausen will be a QB in 5 years, and Tebow will be an H-Back, or backup QB, IMO, that’s just me. I feel if were picking between the two, it’s a no-brainer @ 9, who the QB that should be taken at that point. I think Buffalo likes Clausen, if the media thinks were going Tebow, it could be to scare other teams, and see if we get Clausen to fall to 9, then have the choice of choosing who the Bills want.

Opinion
Ever read/hear a pre-draft report on Heath Shuler, Tim Couch, David Carr, Brady Quinn, or Joey Harrington? They were all supposed to be studs. Can’t miss prospects.
Ever read/hear a pre-draft report on Tony Romo, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, or Jake Delhomme? Marginal prospects or prospects with major concerns.
There’s no way that anyone can accurate say anyone should pick Clausen over Tebow, or vice versa.

Hey....
Laughter is good this time of the year!!! With 13 days to go, things are sure to get tense between all of us since we all obviously have our preferences… I’m personally done with the arguing at least till a couple days prior to the draft….
But it’s sure fun to stir a little now and then….:)
I can see a couple of things happening....
first, Clausen may very well be gone. If not the Browns or Seahawks (not sure I buy Whitehurst as the long term solution there) pass on Clausen, the I can see Oakland taking him at 8 and finally biting the bullet on the failures of Jamarcus Russell. Even if they kept both QBs, its the Raiders and its an uncapped year, so I don’t think they care what happens financially.
Therefore the Bills may not have to worry… if Clausen is there at 9, I bet the bills take him, especailly if 4 OTs have just been taken.
If we take Tebow at 9, we are either the smartest team in the NFL, or we have officially become the Raiders
It is Brohm’s Bills jersey that is the least stained with doo-doo... GO BILLS
I think Seattle is going to exhaust the Whitehurst experiment before the mix the water with another QB.
I’m with you on Cleveland. I just don’t see how that organization could pick a corner so early on when they really don’t have a long-term solution at QB. What good comes from stopping the opposing QB if your own guy is handing the ball back every 3rd series? Dare I say their situation at QB may be worse than the Bills?

if delhomme isn’t a vet seat warmer, than I don’t know what is. Cleveland, might even swap their pick for first and take Bradford for all I know, and then St. Louis could take clausen at 5 or whereever that pick came from… it wouldn’t be all together unrealistic (although Bradford is taylor-made for a dome, and Clausen would be better in Cleveland, even if the dawg pound might have to be put to sleep if another ND QB flops in the second saddest Lake Erie city [guess the first])

don't think so
delhomme was clearly just a back up plan… Holmgren wants a QB… he has to. He is picking too high, has a pretty good OL, and besides Spiller, a QB is a huge need for that offense. (Hell, he should trade everything he has, and just take Clausen, Dex Bryant, and CJ SPiller… wouldn’t that be nice for the Browns)
But in all seriousness, i never saw Delhomme as someone that would answer the bell for cleveland… unless they want someone else, like Tebow, McCoy, or one of the mid round guys. Holmgren knows what he wantrs as I see him as a man of conviction. I almost like him and Mangini over there, as I think mangini is young enough, but man enough to listen to the Holmgren

delhomme was clearly just a back up plan

even still
to me, money is irrelevent when you are trying to put a winner on the field, and if Holmgren feels strongly about a QB prospect in this year’s draft, he’ll pull the trigger. although, since Ive heard next year’s class is stronger then he could wait and build a team around the QB, let delhomme get on last season at glory and then draft the best QB he can next season

Clausen falling
What teams that pick later than Buffalo may be interested in trading up to get Clausen if he falls to #9 (if any)?
I think many of us said trading down would be the best option since we have so many needs. I would love to trade out of #9 and still get Dan Williams or even Tebow later in the first while adding another pick or two in subsequent rounds.
not a bad idea... who would want him most lkely?

They did set the team up nicely to defend the pass. We gave that regime a hell of a time about the CB-heavy drafting, but when Tom Brady is lighting you up, I think there’s merit to drafting heavy at the position.
Now it’s time for this team to attack Brady, rather than defend against him!

the last couple years, I half expected the McKelvin pick, but when we drafted Corner, I was throwing things at my wife and dog…. Then last year, I really nutted up with the Byrd pick… Threw my wife at the dog!!!! Finally got the ball bat out for the Harris and Lankster picks….
I completely agree with you on this one
I believe this to be smoke screens. I can’t see how Nix would pass up the chance to draft such an NFL ready QB.
Even if Bulaga would drop to us at #9, if Claussen is there we should take him. The only caveat would be if Okung would drop to us but even then, I wouldn’t be disappointed to get Claussen.
Somehow, I suspect Claussen won’t make it to us. I think there are many teams that are “smoke screening” teams like Seattle & Cleveland especially. People forget how much Carroll tried to recruit Claussen. He is a huge Claussen fan. Whitehurst or not, I would be surprised that the Seahawks pass on Claussen at #6

I’m so preparing myself for the Tebow at 9 pick. I can already visualize Goodell at the podium uttering the words followed by the oohs aahs and laughs from the crowd.
Really I don’t have to prepare too much, it won’t be a new feeling. I’ve felt it before. When we picked Whitner, when I found out we hired Nix, when I found out we hired Gailey etc, etc…

Absolutely K. I guess i’m saying that I think Tebow’s a guy that will “get it.” Sure it’s interesting that almost no one talks about Tebow’s mechanical ability to be a successful QB, but if he proves a great student, I think he goes far. I don’t know if his throwing motion has to change, but he most certainly needs to be able to read and attack a defense from under center.

I would
Only because I think someone would trade for the #9 and we could still get Tebow later & pick up another mid-late round pick.
Perhaps
But it’s no guarantee.

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
True
I’m not saying drop to the bottom of round 1. I’m thinking drop to around 20, take him there, and hopefully pick up a 5 or 6 to help out with line/linebacker depth. Do you think it’s pretty safe he might be there at 20?
I could live with Tebow then, but only if Clausen is gone first.
I don't think it's safe necessarily
Is it pretty likely? I guess. But if one team has fallen in love with Tebow, that’s all it takes. SF has two picks in that time, they could very well use one on Tebow. Jacksonville has always been a rumored destination for him. Seattle could take him. Somebody could trade back ahead of us for him. You just never know. If the Bills really, really like him, they would probably be wise to take him instead of taking the chances of him not being available later on…..

I guess you’re right. I didn’t think about it that way. People will say it’s a reach & scoff, but I guess if Nix is sold on Tebow, it’s not worth the gamble playing around. I guess I just have a problem justifying a #9 for him, but only time will tell. Not to mention I think the Bills could use all the picks they can get.
I think the Patriots are the biggest threat to steal Tebow.

I'll say this:
I’d be extremely excited if Buffalo was afforded the opportunity to choose between Clausen and Tebow. I’d also be very happy with either player.
I think it comes down to how they want the offense to work and how hands-on they want to be as coaches. Clausen will obviously require less polish before he attempts to run the holiday table, Tebow is an unwritten, line-less journal.

I've been saying this to my friends for the last two weeks:
passing on Clausen would be a monumental mistake.
"It took twenty five years to get there, and they did it in championship style" - Van Miller 1/20/91.
Teams will regret for years to come if they pass on Jimmy Clausen. For Buddy Nix, Chan Gailey and the Buffalo Bills’ sake, I hope we don’t make that huge mistake. The guy has a strong arm, is very accurate, has been very productive at a college that uses the Pro-style offense we know in the NFL, is very mentally tough and is simply a winner that gets the job done no matter the circumstances (horrible O-line, crappy defense).

Strong Arm
Clausen does not have a strong arm. His arm strength is above average for the position. However, Clausen gains all of his arm strength through technique. He really has to overexaggerate his body into proper position to go deep. It’s not natural strength. Guys like Kelly and Bledsoe used natural strength in the hips, legs and torso to put torque on the ball.
Clausen may have issues putting velocity on the football in Buffalo winds.

Clausen does not have a strong arm. His arm strength is above average for the position
If his arm is above average for a position (QB) that is measured by how well one throws the football (i.e. every NFL QB has pretty good arm to begin with since they are in the freakin’ NFL) how could this above average rm not also be a strong one. Not to mention, throwing is like punching, and the power comes less from the arm, and more from the technique, if his technique is good and gives him arm strength, then he has not only a strong arm, but great mechanics… and therefore is good at throwing the football and has a very good chance of being a good football
Clausen may have issues putting velocity on the football in Buffalo winds.
As does just about every QB, and i think he’d do fine actually
It is Brohm’s Bills jersey that is the least stained with doo-doo... GO BILLS
Throwing is not like punching
Velocity comes from legs, hips and torso. That’s where the torque is generated.
Velocity can also be generated by technique, but it’s less reliable since mechanics tend to breakdown or get shortened under pressure.

isn’t that technique… how your body moves in conjunction with the arm?
It is Brohm’s Bills jersey that is the least stained with doo-doo... GO BILLS
Technique is placement of feet, shoulder angle, arm position
Guys like Bledsoe and Kelly had strong a strong lower body, and could power into throws regardless of technique.

It depends. Because strong is relative. Strong compared to who? The other players in the drafft or the 25ish locks to be NFL starters next year?
I actually disagree with Jaeger because I would never call Clausen’s arm strong or above average. Compared to the better arms in the NFL, Clausen is very, very average. You know that I’ve been a Clausen fan and supporter from the get go, but I think his one weakness is that his arm is just OK and his deep balls are total rainbows.

Don’t people say Favre doesn’t have a strong arm, that it’s his chest and back muscles that truly power this passes? I guess if a guy who’s now 40 can throw the ball with that much velocity, and have it come from complementary muscles, i’d be okay with someone else making a living that way.

Clausen and Favre generate velocity in far different ways
Favre is a freak of nature. I can think of no other quarterback that can consistently put velocity on the football while backpedaling.
Comparing anyone to Favre is like comparing a pass rusher to Bruce Smith. I’ve never seen a pash rusher able to coordinate their hands and feet the way Smith did. So, trying to compare a pass rusher to Bruce Smith is folly, because almost no one’s ever been like him.
Same thing with Favre. Not even Elway could throw the ball like Favre in terms of putting velocity on the ball when footwork wasn’t ideal.
Clausen puts velocity on the ball through proper technique. My biggest concern with Clausen is that he’ll lose velocity when rushed or on the move, particularly in the wind.

Somewhat disagree
Weis’ offense calls for half rolls more than full rollouts. The QB, unless under pressure, has the ability to reset his feet on the half roll.
Very similar to what Tom Brady did circa 2001-2005.

Ok, the year before, Tebow had Harvin & Loius Murphy, and Gonz @ TE.
Anyway, it’s a true argument, and as much as I love Weis as a recruiter, he couldn’t develop talent. I don’t want to hear the he could only win with Willinghams recruits, if you throw that out, you have no idea what happened at ND during that time. Ty Will wasn’t playing Samardzija and was slowly ruining Quinns career before Weis came in. Also, Quinn will always be a Tyrone recriut, but he came on a visit to ND with Ndukwe (safety with Cinci) and they were best friends and Quinn came with him on C N visit and then finally the Irish got a commintment from Quinn, they never recruited him. Ty, was to busy playing the beautiful course @ ND (British Links style) than he spent recruiting. That’s why he got fired.

i dont know why you spent most of that comment
talking about quinn…weis had the talent, maybe he was a terrible coach, or maybe clausen simply wants good enough to win against those team with the talent he had. you left out tebows wrs from last year which were hernandez (not sure where you got gonzo from) and cooper (a 5th round talent). and he still managed to win 13 games and throw for almost 3000 yards….
great players make it happen. mediocre ones dont. but like i have said before i wont be shocked when they take him, and i wont “stop rooting for the bills” like so many other melodramatic people.

Also, the talent around Clausen was young, it's harder to win playing with 18-20 year olds,
than the Gators who had mostly upperclassmen playing makes a difference. Yea great players make it happen, what happened to them vs. Bama. They had a chance to be a NC, I would never think ND had that chance, if Clausen wasn’t the QB that led four 4th quater comebacks and led ND to 6-6 record not being a 2-10 or 3-9 without him. The Gators prolly would have had the same success with Brantly at QB, IMO. Just because he made one great speach that has a plaque on the wall, Jimmy was the first Junior captain @ ND, voted by the entire team, people that aren’t leaders wouldn’t have that happen.

Maybe the Gators find similar success with Brantly at QB, but you have to look at Tebow’s stats. The guy was a fireball of production, and you cannot discount that even if he had superior talent around him. He still needed to complete the circle.
People also say that Tebow won’t find similar success in the NFL because it IS the NFL, and defenses are better. I say that while this is true, offenses are also better and Tebow should have talent around him that is far superior to his college mates.

On Sirius NFL radio, Pat Kirwan was talking about this pro-day in particular, and basically said it is just a formality and those that come to these things already know what they need to know about a player, and the scripted set of throws to a QB’s familiar WRs is not as telling as the tape.
With that said, they may just need reassurance that if he’s there at 9 he’s there’s to be had, but also… probably looking at that ND WR as well

Just goes to show what poor leadership skills Clausen has.

ha, yeah Golden didn't want to punch Todd McSay after he said
Clausen isn’t a leader. ; )

so.... are you saying..
that Tate took it upon himself to sit this out? And that Clausen didn’t take charge and ask him?
If Clausen was any kind of leader, he would have punched McShay out for Tate
(I think I just broke my stirring spoon)

Tate was there. He looked great. Check the front page. :)

I just watched the whole thing
And he looks very accurate. I think from watching games and the workout, his arm strength seems fine. I would probably put it in the same class as Matt Ryan or Mark Sanchez. There is more than enough arm strength there. As far as the 2 balls I saw hit the ground, Brian’s post was spot on. The only knock I would say against him is it seemed like he was tiring a little. However, he has not been able to condition properly due to the foot injury. I think we would be lucky to have him fall to 9.

It was at UND.com, but the workout’s over. My bad.
Thought he looked solid. Not perfect – I doubt you’ll hear the glowing reviews that Bradford got. But really, really solid, and had really nice velocity on all of his throws.

that ND WR, who Golden Tate, I haven't seen him yet, it's more the ND WR's that are going
undrafted, like Robby Parrish & David Grimes, I don’t think Golden is their. Not 100 % sure though.

It was Parris that really struggled. Slow out of breaks, couldn’t catch a deep throw to save his life – has trouble tracking and keeping his balance

Yea, he's not that great. As you said, I knew he would make Jimmy look bad, jk.

Ha, the Clausen & McShay interview seemed tense for Todd, he looked nervous,
like Golden was going to come out and punch him. Also, Clausen said he’s going to Buffalo soon after today.

I should repeat that, not being drafted by Buffalo, but visiting them.

haha... see bflo below, he had the same problem
But whatever was wrong, the problem was corrected very quickly. By the time Brian replied the second time, it was all good again.
I swear, I wasn’t seeing things!! :)

Sounds like another Todd Marinovich...
Second quarterback to be taken, polished, more than adequate arm, tutored by quarterback gurus for most of his life, been watched since middle school, trouble communicating with teammates, feelings of entitlement, from California…
My thoughts
First off I am willing to give Nix the benefit of the doubt (yeah that’s right!). Whomever he choses better be a winner though. Period. We cannot take a developmental player, other than QB in the first round, and IF we take a quartberback, they better turn out to be a pro-bowl talent. If Nix is uncomfortable with their ability, then DON’T draft them top ten!
My gut says Clausen IS Brady Quinn… My gut also tells me that Tebow will become a pro-bowl caliber QB. I don’t really have much to base this on, but I don’t think either is worthy of a top ten pick right now… If Nix takes it, so be it, but he better be right, no excuses anymore.
I would be MUCH happier taking a LT in the first… Much like I pined over Oher last year. The only one that concerns me is Bulaga, again just a gut feeling.
I don’t care who Nix takes in the first round, I am willing to wait to evaluate, but this guy better see the field significantly this year (other than a QB), and he better be a pro-bowl type player in the near future. This team has way too many holes to develop prospects.
I got nothing.
