Bills add RB Simpson, release DL Favorite
The Buffalo Bills on Tuesday announced the signing of free agent running back Chad Simpson, as well as the release of reserve defensive lineman Marlon Favorite.
Simpson, 24, spent his first two NFL seasons on and off the roster of the Indianapolis Colts. In 2009, Simpson logged 15 carries, three receptions, and 38 kick returns - including a kick return for a score - in 14 appearances with the AFC champions. The 5'9", 216-pound Morgan State product is a speed back by trade, and also adds to the Bills' abundance of resources at the kick returner position.
The Bills now have eight running backs on their roster. Multiple reports indicate that the team tried out fullback Kyle Eckel on Tuesday as well.
Favorite was signed by the Bills in January, and spent this past weekend's rookie mini-camp taking snaps at defensive end and nose tackle. His release leaves the Bills three deep at nose tackle, with veteran Kyle Williams, rookie Torell Troup and the little-known Lonnie Harvey making up the depth chart.

Odd to say the least. I mean at least give Favorite the preseason. Maybe he is hurt or something.
and another RB? Might the Bills be going with the A11 offense run out of California?

Daaang. Eight Running Backs are a lot. I know that we wont be carrying them all… but still. I remember seeing him watching Colts games. Well if they do choose to go with Jackson, Lynch and Spiller… the battle for the 4th RB spot is going to be interesting. With Bell and Simpson looking the the favorite or that 4th spot, Im guessing?
And it looks like OBD likes what they have in the big guy Harvey… Kind of weird but I guess we dont have a “giant” type player on the roster. So maybe a goal-line stuffer?
"Ok, its Gudda hoe, all about my Bills like Buffalo."
I dont know a lot about Harvey...
but I remember that he was the first guy signed when the season ended and I read somewhere (I wish I could remember where to link to) that Nix really liked this kid. That was why I was surprised when Brian had Favorite making it on the final roster over Harvey, but we will see what we have in him (besides a big fat body).

I believe the Bills may carry an extra RB this year
I think there is a good chance the Bills carry an extra running back this year as they will likely utilize Spiller as a receiver fairly often. I for one can imagine some very interesting packages utilizing Spiller and Jackson in the backfield at the same time. It is not a stretch to envision sub packages that would include Spiller, Jackson, and, Lynch on the field at the same time.
WIth those 3 backs, Evans, and Nelson on the field a D coordinator would have a difficult decision as far as matchups. Would they line up to defend a 3 back, one tight end power set or defend what could be a 4 receiver set with Nelson and Jackson in the slot and Spiller and Evans wide? Interesting options for the creative offensive mind.
I remember Perry Fewell being asked a question towards the end of the season regarding why/how Harvey fit into the Bills D-line, given he is not quicker penetrating tackle. Fewell’s answer was something along the lines of “he takes up two blockers” or “it takes two linemen to move him”. Perry seemed like a straight shooter who had tired of the smallish D linemen Buffalo had relied on during his tenure. It seemed as though he really thought Harvey had upside.

Yeah I could definitely see Buffalo carrying 4 RB’s… especially with Chans ‘Run first’ mentality.
And I want a player like Harvey on the roster because of just what you said, he does take up 2 blockers. I like the quicker, penetrating guys (TWSS, lol) like Troup and Williams but a big guy in the middle just taking up space is a need for this team as well.
"Ok, its Gudda hoe, all about my Bills like Buffalo."
That's right: Spiller may be more of a WR than people think
One thing is certain: Chan Gailey means it when he says he wants a strong running game. And I do think we are going to see Spiller in the backfield, but I agree that he is going to be lining up as a wideout fairly frequently. At Clemson they had him go down the sidelines a lot and he was sensational. He is very evasive and can run routes as well as any rookie WR. He may well be our #2 WR on plays when Lee Evans is going deep and we need someone on the opposite side of the field to draw coverage. And yes, if you were the Defensive Coordinator who would you double cover — Evans or Spiller (or Shawn Nelson going over the middle)?
No you idiot… the picture above shows he is clearly wearing 35. Dont try and make a joke if you dont know what you’re talking about.
Haha just saw that pic…

Could this be a sign that the next press release will be that Lynch has been traded?

I don’t think it would shock anyone if Lynch was moved, especially with us loading up on RB depth. I personally think the Bills would move him for almost anything reasonable at this point.
As for Simpson, I thought he was an okay 3rd down back for the Colts when I watched them. He’s a decent kick returner as well, if we don’t want to risk Spiller/McKelvin out there.

I thought Favorite would at least make it to training camp.
That also has me curious on their thoughts on Harvey.
The amount of running backs is really starting to aggrivate me!

No, Favorite didn’t sign with the Bills until March I believe. Harvey was signed in like November of last year, as was Brohm. Therefore, they’d be considered this regime’s first additions.
by Jeff Winters on May 11, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Nope, Favorite was signed in January. And as there’s no conclusive proof that Buddy Nix had anything to do with the Harvey/Duncan/Brohm acquisitions, Favorite was their first official signing.

Chris Brown's Blog on Favorite
Regarding Favorite, Chris Brown posted on Buffalobills.com:
“Favorite at 6’1″ and 317 is too squatty to play end in a 3-4 and is not a good match in space. He is best standing inside and grinding. But the Bills likely feel they have enough of those candidates in Kyle Williams, Torell Troup and Lonnie Harvey.”
Aka the Bills prefer Harvey to Favorite.

Eckel would be an excellent pick up. He was an excellent back at navy and hasn’t really gotten a fair shot in the NFL due to the service accadamy label. Excellent lead block and good for 5-7 carries a game plus short yardage

So finish this sentence.
HIX is to Running backs what Jauron and the inner circle where to ? ;)
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun
Im a laugh if we draft a RB next season.
Actually its all good. I dont mind signing a crap ton of street FA’s, to fill a position.

You laugh, I might cry. Yeah i agree its basically cheap auditions for guys who you think could have potential. Maybe you get lucky and pick up a guy who can move his way up the depth chart (see Fred Jackson)
And it never hurts toi have a bunchof guys who can arry the ball during mini camp
Should cut down on potential injuries. On the downside, the RB’s meeting is going to be standing room only. Spiller, and Jackson get seats, everyone else has to fight to the death for the other 2 chairs. My money’s on Lynch and Bell.

I dont believe our DB coach had complete control over our draft room……although that WOULD explain alot.
Fact:
RB’s not named Fred Jackson averaged a hair over 8 carries a game. Did we draft C.J. Spiller #9 overall to give those carries to somebody else? Food for thought.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
Which goes to show you can’t entirely trust averages, since when Lynch played, he averaged over 9 carries per game. The number of carries by a non-Fred RB goes up significantly when there are better options than Omon/McIntyre.
However – it’s worth pointing out that the Bills had over 100 fewer rushing attempts than their opponents; they were 21st in the league in that category on offense; 31st on defense. It’s certainly possible that they will have 15 carries per game by “secondary” backs next year.
That may be true, but the question is still out there; Did the Bills draft C.J. Spiller #9 overall to give those carries to somebody else? Whether the number is 8 or 15 is irrelevant.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
Did the Bills draft CJ Spiller to be in the slot, return kicks, and takes 8 carries? :-)

what's with all the running backs?
I’ve never seen a team pick up so many RBs before… any good thoughts on this? Why not do this with QBs while we’re at it. Hell maybe even start signing random offensive linemen.
I've been wanting the Bills to get this guy for a couple of years now
See, I have proof and everything! Haha.
I’ve always liked what I’ve seen of Simpson when the Colts gave him some touches. He’s not overly shifty, but is quick and has above average RB speed. I’ve always thought he was an above average kick returner too, though he’d be about 5th on the depth chart here.
If the Bills still think they can move Lynch, I have no problem with Simpson as our 3rd back. No problem at all.

Also
When I went looking for my Simpson comments, I found this little nugget from our fearless leader:
- The Bills have too many needs to take a Chris Johnson in the second round, when he’d only be a niche player/specialist for this team. I’m not being closed-minded about it, I’m saying the chances of it happening are remote.
I just found it humorous that we drafted a Johnson type player in the top 10, with even more holes 2 years later…..

and this likely why
analysts love to tear up OBD every chance they get… what appear to be questionable picks year after year… and then turn out to be questionable talents in the league. hard not to second guess them. still… spiller was BPA (or seems as though he would impact instantly at very least) and then they seemed to have gotten back on game plan in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th… IMO for a first draft you need to take conservative picks that add talent.

they’ll bring in Red Grange. I understand the need for talent, but it’s curious to me how active they are trying to bring guys in so early. Perhaps we’re all naive to think that RBs are a dime a dozen, and talent is interchangeable? Linton and Bryson seem to hint at this.

maybe gailey is going to employ the shanahan zone-blocking approach, where you need 8 rb’s to avoid having a d tackle as your rb in week 10.

Thinking along the same line...
The Bills go from only 2 RB’s to 8. Is the O-line going to be that bad that the need to carry 4 or more RB’s a necessity?
Reminds of watching Pacific (HBO) when the Marines stormed the beaches in waves. The first lines of the offensive were taken out but the troops just kept on coming——-it might be the same with the Bills RB’s just keep running them no matter how many might fall. Sooner or later they will succeed and enforce their will on their opponent…
