Much has been talked about regarding our poor run defense from a year ago. Also, there has been some discussion on the value of signing Torrell Troupe as early as we did in this past draft. The views from many of you have all been valued as we try to formulate educated opinions on our teams needs. I am beginning to sense that there maybe some confusion in the analysis from last seasons short fall in run defense and to the signing of NT Torrell Troupe. I could be wrong here so I will include a poll for clarity. Still would value any opinion that you all may have.
The whole switch to the 3-4 has left me a little dismayed. When I form an opinion on things I try real hard to look at the whole picture before I put my foot in my mouth. In most cases the picture is much larger than I can grasp and spend much of the time curing the athletes tongue that develops. I am looking at 2009's run defense as a critical deficiency and one that I attribute solely on the Line backers not the front four DL. This will be my poll. We new going in to 2009 that we were week at LBer. The depth behind these starters were FA, rookies and players signed as a result of many try outs through out the season. When the injuries hit this group the stats should show a significant spike in rushing yards allowed by our defense. I fail to see where drafting Torrell Troupe is the savior in our scheme to up grade our run defense.
Now there is the switch to the 3-4 from the 4-3. The center piece for this would be our starting NT. Doesn't this make more sense that his (Troupe's) main roll is to progress into a solid front three on the DL and not the key to stopping the run. I will agree to his addition as being mainly for run support on the DL, but definitely not the savior. I guess I am arguing that the addition of Troupe is geared more for freeing up different pass rushing alternatives. Maybe a poll for another time would be our switch to the 3-4 was due to our lack of Pass rush over the last decade. I guess what I am trying to say and figure out is that upgrading our linebacker corp will have a greater impact to stopping the run, and the signing of Torrell Troupe allows us the versatility of improving our pass rush more than stopping the run.
