Summer 2010 Chan Gailey Approval Ratings

Back in mid-April, just prior to the events of the 2010 NFL Draft, we ran the inaugural Chan Gailey approval poll here at Buffalo Rumblings. The Buffalo Bills' new head coach scored a 70% approval rating at that point in time, having just filled out his coaching staff and overhauled the strength and conditioning department.

Now that the team's OTAs and mini-camps have concluded, this poll will become a weekly feature once training camp starts, and will remain that way throughout the entire 2010 season. (Buddy Nix will be getting monthly polls during the season.) We thought we'd gauge the community's thoughts on Gailey one last time before the real work begins in a hair over a month. What has he done since the first version of this poll? Glad you asked.

  • Disclosed that there would be a "pecking order" at training camp with his QBs
  • Went out of his way to publicly praise the efforts of Brian Brohm
  • Gave those QBs equal first-team reps during spring practices, along with his skill players
  • Played a little hardball with disgruntled running back Marshawn Lynch
  • Openly praised his training staff and the talents of left tackle candidate Demetrius Bell
  • Slotted players into new positions (OG Kyle Calloway, OLB Reggie Torbor, ILB Arthur Moats, SS Jon Corto)

As always, just cast your vote on whether you approve or disapprove not of Gailey's hire, but of what he has accomplished, and what you believe he might have failed to accomplish.

Main thing I like...

is hearing about the multiple shifts, etc on offense so far.. No more pop warner football!!! LOL!!!

But the no nonsense, open competition at almost every position, backed up not only in words, but in action, I’m sure, motivates the players to practice harder than ever as well…

The draft dawns a new year for Buffalo Bills fans, so let optimism reign supreme!!! After all, we are now, UNDEFEATED!!!!

Cinga--Couldn't agree more

Club Med is over!! The Bills now have a direction and you can sense that players and front office personnel are now being held accountable for their actions.

I would add in what was accomplished by changing what is expected in the weight room and adding 2 new trainers—-this move will definitely show on field results.

Accountability

On the subject of accountability, a few weeks ago I was talking to a Bills employee who said that the new regime’s expectations of on-field improvement are high, and that the Bill office will be a very unpleasant place to be if there isn’t significant progress.

Thurman Thomas interview.

This is a very critical point your making. One I expect to separate the men for the boys type of point. Going back to Thurman’s interview regarding the hiring of Mr. Chan Gailey and his point about holding players accountable regardless of stature was a key coaching characteristic that many of us have listed as missing in recent years. This should intensify training camp as well. I am also sure that this will carry out among the coaching staff as well, at least on the offensive side. Another reason to read between the lines and be a little more excited about this season than most.

There’s not really a ton to be disappointed about at this point. For those that don’t like him you can’t vote no just because he’s here – that wouldn’t be prudent to this exercise.

I think he’s made some smart, common sense type of decisions that will ultimately help this team be more successful faster than it could have been. Especially the QB pecking order – that is very comforting knowing that we won’t have 3 QBs doing reps with the 1s. That would put more of our players behind the curve so he should be applauded for that move.

Right now

it’s summer school. On a pass/fail grade system, he gets a pass(although I still wish more attention had been spent on the OL).
“School” starts 9/12 and, hopefully, he’s almost done completing the summer “reading” assignment.
He does appear to be a marked improvement over last year’s class clown.

This is a great way of putting it. I mean, honestly, at this point, what has any coach really done? On a pass/fail system, I also give him a pass.

However, I do think back to Whitner’s comments about how hard the players were being expected to work compared with the previous regime. Because of that, I will vote for “approve.”

He's consistent and he's tough

I like a guy that sticks to the plan. Obviously we can’t judge him on performance because they really haven’t done anything yet but so far I really like the way he handles himself and the media. He clearly has a plan and he’s sticking to it. I really love the way he’s handled the Marshawn Lynch situation and I still feel that Marshawn will flourish under his tutelage. I like the way he’s handled the Schobel retirement situation as well.

As much as we feared that our line needed an injection of talent, Gailey’s calm and positive outlook on the Oline has started to rub off on me and I am actually starting to believe that we might be in much better shape than I originally thought

More than anything, I am really looking forward to watching our team go back to a style of football that fits our profile, a power running team built for bad weather. With the return of Eric Wood, I am really anxious to see how he will utilize our 3 headed monster and how much it will open things up for Evans and Nelson, who I feel will become an important piece of the future success of this offense.

The additions that Gailey made on the defensive side of the ball might be low key but man will they help! I think getting Davis was a stroke of genius and signing Edwards was another very smart move – both are solid 3-4 veterans with chips on their respective shoulder’s that can come in and instantly make a huge impact during this transitional year. Torbor was the cherry on the sundae

Keep it up Chan! Go Bills!

Great Job

I don’t think there are many who expect this team to do much better than 6-10 or thereabouts, though I expect the Bills to be competitive in most of their games. But there’s a sense that things are turning around — a kind of Jauron-is-finally-gone relief. I think that’s going to sustain a lot of fans through what might have otherwise been a difficult season. 1986 was a fun season to watch because you could sense the Bills that we were watching were stars in the making, that the team would turn it around. I get that same sense with the team being built now. We have some exciting young players — Spiller, Byrd, hopefully Maybin. A LT, a QB, and one or two other players, and I think they’ll have a great team in place. Let’s just hope they actually draft those players next year. :)

Call me endlessly optomistic
A LT, a QB, and one or two other players, and I think they’ll have a great team in place. Let’s just hope they actually draft those players next year. :)

…but I’m hoping we might discover that we already have one or more of those players on the roster. ;-)

But I agree with a lot of what you’re saying about the sense of a “turning around.” Though for me that has a lot to do with a relatively un-hyped pick-up this off-season: I have a sneaking suspicion that at the end of the day we might look back on this season and decide that our best under-the-radar pick-up of this off-season was a new strength and conditioning staff. I have absolutely no scientific evidence to back that up, just a hunch…

good but not great

Great would have meant he had found a way to solidify the O-line with better talent. He does however, still have time for that. I say good because of his progress on stopping the run, and his hiring of two coaches to try and keep the team healthy.

How exactly is Gailey doing a good job so far? You can’t assume he’s doing a better job than Fewell, DJ, Mularkey, and Williams without any real evidence to back it up.

by Henry_Gale on Jun 26, 2010 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Is he supposed to be competing with Fewell, DJ, Mularkey, and Williams? The whole point of these polls, (which there always seems to be a handful of people who miss it, is to see if you approve of what HE HAS DONE SO FAR. Maybe you liked what he has done, and maybe you think he should have done things differently. For example, maybe you think he should have need a starter by now like Adam Schein, and that is a reason to disapprove. This exercise really isn’t that hard.

I voted for undecided. I personally don’t know if he’s making the right decisions or not, and it seems to me that his decisions are virtually non-existent at the moment. Sure you could approve of the pecking order, but doesn’t every team have a pecking order for training camp? And if the organization is undecided on who should be the official starter for week one, then that pecking order would predictably be set in pencil, rather than stone.

but… he has done things. Actual things.

- he’s presented to the media. good job there.
- the players have apparently “baught in,” which isn’t an automatic even though it is a cliche. good job there.
- he’s ignored distractions (lynch, schobel) despite media hounding regarding these players. good job there.
- he’s run an honest open QB competition. all three seem to be competing and “on-board,” sorry for another cliche. good job there.
he’s talked the GM into getting him a playmaker early. that may be a presumption, but it’s pretty likely he was a big part of drafting Spiller. Good job there.

on a lighter note, he hasn’t wore a jungle hat. great job there.
he hasn’t fired his OC yet. excellent.

there’s plenty to simply “approve of.”

Why put blind faith in Gailey? Don’t you realize that all of the Bills’ head coaches for the last decade have “said the right things in the beginning.”

by Henry_Gale on Jun 26, 2010 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

To Start

Gailey has said all the “right things” so far. His off-season “moves” or lack thereof have me thinking he’s ( FO included ) got a plan and their trying to implement it. It’s not “blind faith” that I’m feeling, its what I see and hear. That said, the only thing that will matter is W/L record. But sofar so good!

by buffalobacker on Jun 26, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

What has Gailey done so far? We know what Nix and the rest of the front office has done: drafted players and dipped in the free agency to some degree. But for Gailey, all what he’s come up with is a pecking order.

by Henry_Gale on Jun 26, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

Whatever the hell a HC does in the off-season is what Gailey’s done. I agree that its to early to give Gailey any kinda grade but he’s conducting himself professionally, thats a plus! What exactly is his pecking order? I thought that was still up in the air!

by buffalobacker on Jun 26, 2010 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

This doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement here. Gailey has accomplished nothing yet, and so until he does something, then I’ll land judgment.

btw, Gailey has his pecking order, but he’s not revealing it yet.

O.K.

I voted unsure, I too want to see “finished product” and how well Chan manages games and offensive system he implements. I’m not trying to sell you on Chan. The question was are you happy sofar with Chan’s actions. He seems to me, to be setting a good tone for a team in need of everything. I for one am pleased sofar, but its far to early to say if that carries over to the field, which is the only thing that matters. He talks the talk, will see if he can walk the walk! Is Chan keeping “pecking order” a secret? Why not announce it? I think he’s still deciding, but don’t really care either way!

His playing hardball with Marshawn and his handling of the QB's is enough to get my approval so far.

Although it’s tough to really gauge this before the pre-season, or maybe even the regular season starts.

For Marshawn, it’s about time someone plays hardball with him. I hated how DJ basicly blindly supproted him. Playing hardball might be the only way that Marshawn finally gets its.

As for the QB’s. I’m happy that this is a true open competition. Equal oppertunities for everyone is what was needed and it’s whats has happened. I’m pleasantly surprised with Brohm so far, but I’d like to see what happens when the pads are on before I put my hoppes and support behind any QB on our roster.

And now MRW has us voting for who we want to vote against!

Marshawn Lynch – I hope you do realize that Gailey and Lynch never spoke to each other, until Lynch started to go to mini-camps. You know, after things got ironed out with Lynch and the front office.

The open competition – Why wouldn’t Gailey want an open competition? Brohm, Edwards, and Fitzpatrick are largely unproven quarterbacks, and showed nothing last season.

Sorry for being negative, but Gailey hasn’t done anything worthy of a thumbs up.

Question

Are you privy to what input Gailey has as HC? How do you know ML and FO “ironed” something out? You sound like you know the inner workings of FO. Your assuming Chan has no input with decision making, why?

by buffalobacker on Jun 27, 2010 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know any “insider information,” but Gailey did say he talked to Lynch for the first time when he went to mini-camp. As for ML, he is going to training camp and he participated in a voluntary training camp and the mandatory mini-training camp. This tells me that he’s no longer “protesting” and is willing to do the work necessary to be a productive member of the team. You know, Lynch could have gone Jason Peters on the Bills, but he did not.

I like how he put together his coaching staff.

Meaning the more experienced NFL coaching and coordinator on defense and the more instructor type on offense. I like Modkins and Cortez but the jury is still out on Alexandria the O-Line coach.

they haven’t played any games so we can’t evaluate from W/L’s but the fact that he has stated he plans to run the ball allot is something that I am looking forward to. Also, his offense has known to be a complex from a formation stand point which could add to our improved progress on offense. Finally, the most unorthodox-ed move to date would be drafting C.J. Spiller with our first pick. To me that shows confidence in his philosophy. I give him multiple thumbs up so far.
