Buffalo Bills 2000s Worst-Decade Team - DT Selection
About a two and a half months ago MattRichWarrenpresented us with his Buffalo Bills 2000s All-Decade Team series. And for about a month we voted on a series of poles to determine who was worthy of being on that team. But more often than not we also ended up complaining over the limited sometimes horrible talent that we had to pick from for any given position. So it was about at the TE position that I thought "hey why don't we also vote on the worst players that played for this team over the last decade?" And so here we are.
Now just like MattRichWarren'sseries I have a few criteria for players to be eligible for this team. They had to have played in at least a full season's worth of games in this decade to be eligible. Starting is not requirement, but you do have to have played significant amounts of snaps in those games. That means that, for example, the Bills 3rd receiver might make the list, but a 4th or 5th stringer wont be considered. That means that we wont end up voting for 7th rounders that ended up playing 2 snaps. These are going to be real players that played real roles on this team over the last ten years. And just because a player ended up on the All-Decade team does not mean that you can't also be on the worst-decade team.
We've been on this for over a month now. We've done the offense, we just completed the special teams, it's time to start on the defense. And just like any good, or bad D, it all starts on the Lines, so that's where I'm starting too. More specifically the Defensive Tackle position. Here in buffalo we've been very lucky to have a great deal of quality DT's play for our team; the likes of Ted Washington, Pat Williams, Sam Adams, Marcus Stroud and Kyle Williams have all worn, and performed, in a Bills uniform. But that doesn't mean that we haven't seen a few stinkers come along either. So without farther delay, here's the list.
Shawn Price
Signed away from Carolina in 1996, Price spent most of his time as a DE in the Bill's 3-4 D. But he called upon to be a starter at DT when we made the switch to the 4-3 in the 2001 season. In that season Price played in 11 games and started all of them. He had 49 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 pass defended. Not bad considering it was the first time he played DT since college. It still wasn't good enough for the Bills to want to keep the aging lineman though as the team let him walk after the 2001 season. He went on to play one last season at DE for the Chargers before retiring after the 2002 season.
Ron Edwards
Drafted by the Bills in the 3rd round of the 2001 draft, Edwards spent 5 injury riddled seasons with the Bills, most as depth on the DL. But he did spend the 2002 campaign as the Bills starter opposite Pat Williams. In his 5 seasons with the Bills Edwards played in 48 games, starting 25 of them. He had 83 total tackles, 7 sacks, 1 pass defended, 3 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery over those 5 seasons. The Bills let him walk after the 2005 season and he went on to spend the last 4 years of his career in Kansas City.
Tim Anderson
Another 3rd round draft pick of the Bills, this time in 2004, Anderson played in parts of 4 seasons in Buffalo. In that time he played in 38 games, starting in 17 of them. He had 77 total tackles, 1 sack and 4 passes defended. He was released by the Bills 4 games into the 2007 season. He went on to play 5 more games for the Falcons that season and hasn't played in the NFL since.
Larry Tripplett
A second round draft pick of the Colts in 2002, Tripplett signed with the Bills in the 2005-2006 off season as the Bills thought that his knowledge of the Cover 2 Defense might help Dick Jauron transfer the team to the Cover 2. They were wrong. Tripplett spent two seasons in Buffalo, playing and starting all 32 games for the team. In those games he had 68 total tackles, 1 sack, 8 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Tripplett was released by the Bills during the 2007-2008 off season after Kyle Williams had made his value to the Bills clear and the team traded for Marcus Stroud. Tripplett never played in the NFL again, but had a failed try-out with the Seahawks. He can currently be seen playing for Orlando in the UFL.
John McCargo
A first round draft pick of the Bills in the 2006 draft (the team traded up to get him), McCargo has been a huge disappointmentto the Bills so far in his career. He has been with the Bills for 4 seasons now, playing in 39 games and starting in only 1. He has amassed only 46 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 5 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries in 4 seasons. The Bills tried to trade McCargo to the Colts during the 2008 season, only to have the trade cancelled because he failed the physical. McCargo is currently attempting to make the switch to 3-4 DE in the Bills new defense, but his spot on the team is in no way guaranteed.
There you have it folks, the 5 blips on the screen in a mostly top end talent filled decade at DT for the Bills. Now go vote.
Previous instalments: QB, RB, FB, WR1, WR2, TE, OT1, OT2, OG1, OG2, C, STs

Darwin Walker should be on this list, even if he never technically played for the Bills.

Never actually played for the Bills is the only reason i didn’t include him.
Although I he will be involved in the “worst Bills trade of the decade” poll. There’s also going to be a “Worst draft pick oll” and a “Worst draft class” poll. I’m not going to be done until I show exactly how horrible this team was accross the board, and that include front office moves.

There’s also going to be worst coach, worst team, worst coaching move and worst player in an important position.

I voted for him, but honestly I could have voted just as easily for Tripplett. He was to be counted on more and he proved to be nothing more than a body on the field, often quite literally.

For me its far and away Tim Anderson
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun
As bad as John McCargo has been
Tim Anderson was worse

3rd round picks are allowed to be misses......but when you trade back into the 1st round for a guy that sucks,
it is a much bigger disappointment. McBusto deserves the title hands down.

Yeah, but Anderson was a worse player, IMO

all of my selections are based half on playing ability
and half on draft position…so if i think two guys are pretty similar in suckatude, then i take the higher draft pick, thus why mccargo gets the nod from me.

Man oh man oh man. YUCK. Larry Tripplett, Tim Anderson and McCargo were really really hard to choose from. Eventually I settled on McCargo because of where he was drafted and the fact that he never did ANYTHING. At least Tripplett was on the field doing stuff. Even if it was bad stuff.

Wow...
For as good as we were at DT (Washington, Williams, Adams) we were equally as bad with this group. You could really go with any of these guys… but at the #1 DT spot… Im going with Tim Anderson. He was just flat out BAD. But I figure Big John will win this one… and deservingly so.

That’s the thing i’m curious about. Will there be a 2nd DT selection, if considering this team as a 4-3.

The 200 draft? So that’s why he sucks, he’s 1800 years old :P
Had to vote for McCargo. Gave up a lot to get him and got nothing in return
oups. nice catch, just fixed it.

I'm with you
He was allowed to suck here for too long, and cost far too much. People put a lot of stock that someone is a “bust” in the first round, and however much that sets you back as an organization, “busted” free agents cost far more, and set you back just as much or more than a busted 1st round pick. You think you brought in a guy to fill a need so you can draft other positions. When that guy turns out to suck, you are screwed for years… Look at our O-line as a grim reminder of the failed promise of free agency…
first round picks are supposed to be studs
if you think OBD paid too much for Triplett….fine, but if you thought Triplett was going to be a stud then you were suckling Kool Aid from the tit of Dick Jauron himself.

you know what’s the best about this list? mccargo’s got the second-most sacks of the five players on the list.
with 2.5.

Um, no… Edwards has the most, with 7; then Tripplett with 3.5; Price had 3 between 2000-2001; then McCargo with 2.5. Anderson brings up the rear at 1. So McCargo has the second-fewest sacks here.
To put that in perspective, those five accounted for more sacks than Ted Washington, Pat Williams, and Marcus Stroud in the past decade.
In Tampa 2
Defensive tackles should have more sacks than in other schemes, particularly the 3-4. That does not explain Stroud. In the scheme we were running, the front 4 are supposed to rush every down, therefore increasing the likelihood of a sack. In other systems, the tackles are mostly supposed to occupy blockers. I believe in the Greg Williams 4-3 and most 3-4 systems, the tackles are supposed to occupy blockers and keep their eye out for batting passes down.
i was talking about while with the bills. edwards has 7, mcbusto with 2.5, price with 2, and anderson and tripplett with one.

The only thing Tripplet was good for was
That Washington game. If I can remember correctly he had a sack, FF and FR. And that was about his only good game in blue and red.

If McCargo had been drafted in the 5th I doubt he would be nearly as hated as he currently is. He’d still be on the list, but not winning. For me this was a toss up between Anderson and Tripplet. I had to hand it to Anderson for being soft, useless and soiling our tradition of solid draft picks from ohio state. At least I saw Tripplett make a few plays.
Enjoying my annual three months of optimism.
