NFL Picking Up Pace On First-Round Signings
Buffalo Bills rookie running back C.J. Spiller remains unsigned - one of a majority of first-round picks without deals - but that number is dwindling quickly. 17 first-round picks have now agreed to terms with their respective clubs, including No. 4 overall pick Trent Williams (Washington), No. 5 overall pick Eric Berry (Kansas City), No. 8 overall pick Rolando McClain (Oakland) and No. 11 overall pick Anthony Davis (San Francisco). All three of those deals should help to accelerate negotiations between the Bills and Spiller's agent, Gary Wichard.
On Wednesday, Bills GM Buddy Nix informed assembled media at St. John Fisher College that the Bills had been talking with Spiller's agent, Gary Wichard, and that "things were moving."
"We're still working on it," Nix said. "Things are moving, but no guarantees. Nothing really at this time. When you're talking, things are starting to work, and other first rounders are starting to fall, so that'll help us."
The next two deals to fall that would help the Spiller negotiations - should he continue to wait for the slotting process to fully develop - are Jaguars DT Tyson Alualu (No. 10 overall) and Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (No. 12). A listing of all signed first-round picks, and their respective contract terms, lies after the jump.

definitely faster for us
and seems like teams want a real chance to make a push this year, with the impending CBA, it is in their best interest to perform this year, and getting players there on time will help that perfomance.

your probably right
but I thought we were slow with Troup. the dominoes are starting to fall and hopefully no one falls into the crabtree.

Just Curious...
why do you think we were slow with Troup? I was pleased he was signed in time to begin training camp.
imo
thats all that really matters. doesnt matter if they signed in april or if they signed the day before camp, just matters that it was before camp. hopefully spiller will get signed and into camp here soon, sometime next week i predict with the speed of all these first rounders signing….

just my opinion
Second round pick signed the morning of the first day of camp. A couple weeks after our third round pick. The parameters were in place for an earlier signing. Just seemed odd. More appropriate to me is to have your first round pick sign the morning of the first day of camp.

Good
Sounds at the least encouraging for the prospect of getting Spiller signed, sooner than later.
Home of "Spiller the Thriller"
Interesting/annoying how this plays out.
Whats annoying about this whole process is that first rounders wait for the picks around them/ same position to sign, so they have reference point. However, if everyone thought this way, no one would ever be signed. Those who take a leap of faith may end up with less $ than they would have if they waited…but will be more NFL ready on week1.
Like the 6-year deal for Williams
If Spiller is the ‘real deal’, I would like to see a 6-year contract for him too.
Updated, as #5 pick Eric Berry just tweeted he’s agreed to terms with KC. That’s three top-10 picks signed.

All these signings as camps open...
I can never understand why agents and teams wait to the very last minute to start negotiating in good faith.
Can’t wait to see what the top 3— Bradford,Suh & McCoy sign for —-hopefully they won’t be the top paid players in NFL history. That would Suck!!!!!!!

Updated once again, as PIT/Maurkice Pouncey have agreed to terms. Just about at the half-way point, with 15/32 first-rounders signed.

Gary Wichard(Spillers agent)
Never heard of him, but I like him more than Eugene Parker(Jason Peters/Stephen Jackson) already. Do you think clubs stay away from certain players because of their agents? (Serious question) I might.

Eugene Parker also represents Dez Bryant, the first first-rounder to sign, FYI.

So it isn’t all bad. But my question still stands. to what degree does it matter, if at all, in your opinion?

I know for a fact some teams hate working with certain agents.
by Brian Galliford on Jul 30, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
agree, but i doubt
they can really pass on a player simply because they might have to deal with an agent they don’t like. If they need or want that guy, and he is there, hardballing with an agent is not likely to sway the selection

Eugene Parker
was also Crabtree’s agent

Bet they do!
Also Crabtree’s…Not a very good track record (until now), maybe he’s been getting some heat.

But it still makes me wonder
Look at Houston with Reggie Bush

All that shows
is Houston was smart enough to recognize a number 1 pick overall for a RB is ridiculous, and Williams is paying off in a huge way. So his relative cost is worth it. Not to mention, they aren’t dealing with the current hooplah.

Who knows, Different agent, different team?
Do the Saints still win the big one without Bush? 99 percent sure they still do, but one player CAN make a difference(Favre,Kelly,Davis)would the outcome change because of an agent? What other big names does Wichard represent anyway?

Davis' contract numbers are in
I’ll try to edit the table….
~K
"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
As a result
Looking at McClain and Davis’ contract, let’s assume Spiller will be looking for:
5 years, $35M, $20M Guaranteed, give or take.
I think Davis’ deal looks a little low in comparison to McClain’s only 3 slots earlier…

McClain was signed by the Raiders...
they always overpay.

NE signed McCourty days ago
and if you look at it, he is getting PAID too.

Thats not a horrible deal if Spiller becomes a return man, home run running back style player for us.
It stuns me how much money is saved thought going from the 5th to the 9th pick! From a possible 60 million to only the 30s, or less!

holy crap 78 million for bradford
thats….insane

The next time I'm hired for a new job
I’ll just tell them I want 4 years of salary guaranteed and, say, 10 thousand dollars up front….shouldn’t be a problem;)
