Why does it seem like our first picks feel the need to punish the Bills for picking them?

If all the stars align, pigs learn to fly, humanity achieves world peace, doctors discover a cure for cancer, scientists perfect cold fusion, and hell freezes over, the Bills might win the SB this year.

you see I’m not the only one that feels that way… Let’s just say that on draft day CJ did not look thrilled!

Let’s see, he’s coming to a place that is the laughing stock of the league, coaches and FA players refuse to consider signing with us unless there’s no other options, he’s coming to a place with two good RB already established, there no QB, the weather sucks and the nightlife is worse – what’s there not to like?

Crap, even our beloved Jim Kelly refused to come to Buffalo at first. I don’t blame them at all, it must suck to want to be drafted high but at the same time you know it means being drafted by a bottom dwelling team.

Pretty hard to compare Kelly coming to buffalo to spiller’s arrival…. Kelly had choices of a whole other league – with more money than what the NFL was offering.

The two obvious major components playing to Spiller’s delayed signing….. Tyson Alualu and Ryan Matthews not having deals yet. Everyone expected those two other players to go much later in the first than Spiller. However Jacksonville may have “reached” on him maybe causing those two side to be far apart…. Same goes for Matthews thus delaying movement with Spiller. It is a very dumb process yet it is a business. You would not go to work on Monday if you knew that you could possibly get more money somehow. How stupid would Spiller’s agent look if Matthews ended up with a better deal!

I don’t think anyone is “punishing” the Bills. I actually think it is pretty legit. That guaranteed money may be the only pay day they ever get.

i do blame them

There is nothing sucky about getting guaranteed millions for going in the top ten.

I don’t get how you can blame the players at all. They are being picked for their skills. If you are a top ten pick that means you should be paid accordingly. If I were Spiller I would wait until Matthews got paid to endure I got paid accordingly.

People sit and judge someone for making $15 million versus $17 million. I understand that it is still a great deal of money either way but a several million dollar difference is huge. Just the interest alone is big. It is an industry and the players are performing a service that nobody on this blog can. They have a right to fight for every penny even if that means holding out. The networks, players’ unions, refs and cities all go through the battles. Look at Versus and the NHL, NBA and the refs, and multiple leagues with their players unions. Bottom line is that sports are a business regardless of how frustrating it may for fans that enjoy watching them.

No one knows who is offering what

And who is demanding what. You shouldn’t blame anyone unless you know all the facts….

I was responding to keysh’s statement that “it must suck” for these players. I meant to imply that nothing about their situation sucks, though I realize I worded it poorly.

I dont blame the players, I blame the system that allows them to get paid so handsomely for doing nothing.

I do see what you mean but I would think because there are two established RBs already in camp it would speed up the progress especially if you looking for adding incentives to the contract. I fail to see where he has any leverage. Matter of fact he might have the least amount of leverage in the top ten.

by telka on Jul 31, 2010 10:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don’t disagree that he is hurting his development. and that we have solid guys like Freddy and Lynch at RB. But who is to say that he is going to be used 100% similar to thier roles. We have seen articles that he may line up at WR and also return kicks. He has a ton of leverage – Buffalo picked him. I think it is just a matter of seeing where the cards fall into place… that being Matthews and Alualu.

I now live near baltimore and will be going to the Skins game – Ill be so pissed if he is not in camp by then!

Wow. Really? What gave it away – his jubilation, his tears of joy? Come on. That’s reaching to the highest degree.

a much more reasonable hour of the morning this time, eh Brian?

not at all, I was watching the draft live with my buddy and I actually said exactly that. I found his smile did not look sincere. Was he happy to be off the board Yes, was he ecstatic that it was to Buffalo, I suspect No. Something that nobody has ever discussed yet is the possibility of us getting the top pick and our top choice pulling an Eli Manning. Until he did it I had always suspected that he could be done and wondered why it had never happened before. Imagine, he refused to go play for San Diego!

I’m not suggesting that he won’t sign, just that he’s going to make sure he gets every last penny, he ain’t going to do us any favors.

I do believe that he will win him over in time, assuming the coaching

Even I thought he looked happy

I think you kind of hate Spiller for some reason…

I didn't......looked like a funneral to me.

Doesn’t mean he hasn’t changed his tune, but there must be a reason why the Bills have trouble getting their 1st pick signed. There are enough players signed to get this deal done.

because of CJ2K and the situation he is in...

CJ’s contract is likely loaded with stipulations, which is likely the cause of the holdup, ( i say holdup because i feel it is less holdout and more holdup most years with the 1-15 picks….) they are looking for the best relative comparisons and then arguing the details. his contract likely has a lot of bonus/ incentives, and he only gets this payday once in a life. get what you can, they WANTED you badly enough, and should realize you wanna get paid. If he is the future, pay the man.

not at all

Not only do I like the kid, I think he’s going to be a fantastic addition to our team. And I was quite happy with the pick on draft day.

But I still say that his happiness on Draft day looked fake. And I am not trying to imply that he doesn’t want to be in Buffalo because I think he does now. He seems the type of kid that will quickly become the fan favorite and I think he will be great for the team for many years to come.

Never happened before? That’s exactly what John Elway did. He threatened to go to MLB rather than play for the Colts.

I’d be fascinated to know whether the Bills are low-balling him, or whether Spiller’s agent wants something exorbitant (which seems to be implied through Schefter/Mort/etc.’s various tweets).

He’s not dumb, he sees what happened to the other CJ.

He is making sure that the same thing doesn’t happen to him…. I guess.

Considering he stands to make 3 times more money in guarantee dollars this doesnt make any sense

CJ2k was selected at the bottom of the 1st round, basically the worst spot for a beast player to be drafted because you sign a 5 year deal, and it turns out to be relatively cheap for the team. It would actually be better long term for a player to be selected at the top of the 2nd round, esp a running back.

IMO

Chris Johnson was a different scenario because he wasn’t a real high pick. With the current CBA system, except for the top-10 or so picks, if a player hits it big like Johnson did, he out-performs his rookie contract very quickly. Spiller is going to get a ton of guaranteed money, whereas Johnson did not.

by Jeff Winters on Jul 31, 2010 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

what’s the point of talking about this? Like I understand it’s important to get your high picks into camp but it’s stupid and boring to discuss. When it gets done it’s done. And there’s little to no point discussing when because the front office will get it done hopefully a.s.a.p.

I take this away from the post: It’s not all roses when discussing C.J. Spiller. But it’s not abnormal for this to happen.
