August 2010 Chan Gailey Approval Poll
We told you that we'd be running monthly approval polls for Chan Gailey and Buddy Nix once Buffalo Bills training camp got underway; the first of the August polls comes today as we break down what Gailey has done of late.
- Placed Trent Edwards atop his QB pecking order, with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm rotating the second spot.
- Other first-teamers to open camp: Demetrius Bell, Steve Johnson, Reggie Torbor, Leodis McKelvin
- Has had his team in pads during every camp practice to date, asking "we're in training camp, aren't we?"
- Mandates that all offensive linemen wear knee braces during camp practices.
- Placed heavy emphasis on individual/fundamental work in camp to date.
Previous approval polls: 24% approval Hiring Date (50% disapproval); 70% approval April 2010 (5% disapproval); 83% approval June 2010 (2% disapproval)

Full disclosure: I voted “approve” for the first time, after copping out with a “not sure” in the first two polls. I like Gailey’s style, but there’s a long way to go.
I approved as well. I think moreso than some of his decisions that we see, his interviews seem, to me anyways, to be what I would want a HC to say. DJ I was always left with some dissatisfying taste in my mouth – but with Chan he seems so grounded and maintians simplicity throughout his interviews and for some reason I like that.
same for Nix though – I love both of their no nonsense attitudes. I think it’s hilarious to begin with, but they also seem to stick with what they say and follow the same core values that I would instill in a team.
good for you Brian – The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural

I pretty much hated the Gailey hire at first, but after seeing him in action (especially bringing toughness to the team through full-pad workouts), I think he’s certainly an upgrade over Jauron. Whether that translates into success is another ballgame. So for now, I approve.

Just about everyone was disappointed in the hire at first (including myself), a lot of people just took longer to either accept it or learn to like the hire than others.

I voted approve, the thing I hated with Jauron, is you never knew what his teams were, what exactly was he trying to build? But with Gailey its pretty simple, he wants toughness, he wants guys to be able to knock around eachother, and honestly, how can you not approve of that? Also, the players really seem to have bought in.
I voted not sure only on the first poll, but so far I like his style.
I was born in Buffalo, and NO, it's not a suburb of New York City
But he's about more than toughness
What strikes me is that, although he has clearly made a favorable impression on Bills fans, we haven’t seen the best side of Chan Gailey yet. That would be his skill as an offensive coordinator, designing plays that keep the other team guessing. More than anything else that’s what he is known for. Since we haven’t had a real offensive coordinator in a decade now (I wasn’t all that impressed with Mularkey), but instead have had an offense that ran Pop Warner plays, this could be a huge step forward. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he installs come September.
Approve
I was never really sold on the big name coaches that were thrown around before the hiring. But I did want a name that I at least knew and that wasn’t Gailey. The more I learned about and heard from him the more I liked him he really seemed to fit Buffalo well, low key, honest about what he plans to do and why hes doing it that way. He intends to play tough football and that’s the way it should be.
Another random Remember the Titans quote:
And who’s team is this, Gary? Is this your team? Or is this your daddy’s team?

I still approve so far............ but
He damn sure be a LOT better game manager/play caller than DJ.
Talk is cheap, but he’s alright with me so far.

What I Like...
is Chan’s statement at his last press conference, and I paraphrase: “I believe in toughness and discipline. This is a tough game, for tough people.”
I love that attitude!
I think we are on the right track, but I don’t expect miracles in 2010. I do expect to see a much more focused and disciplined team than we saw under DJ.
I Approve!
I have voted approval every time (based on the judging criteria) a poll has been offered and I will continue to approve until Nix does something I can’t fathom. So far he has been very good IMO.

yeah...
i want Nix to be dumb, so that he can be Pinky, because Gailey bares just too much resemblence to “The Brain” that said, maybe we gots us TWO “brains” and we can end up TAKING OVER THE WORLD… ie Bringing the title of World Champions home to Buffalo for the first time in our NFL history!

Actually if you recall, the episode where Brain makes Pinky as smart as he is winds up with them failing to get a single plan off and them both turning themselves stupid.
So that might not be the ideal plan!

… so we need Nix to be dumb then? Is he just a figure head then? Chan’s the man? like, for reals? haha. JK. i realize there are many pieces to the puzzle. Brain sure does look like Chan though. Creepy kinda. ; )

I voted approve
I voted “not sure” at the hiring date, saying:
Undecided. I want to see who the coordinators are. Hoping for Jim Bates to coach the defense.
In April I changed to “approve,” saying:
I voted agree. I think the work environment that he’s created is going to be more important that we realize. Not Club Jauron, and not Gregg Williams either. Even keeled, no BS environments produce well, IMO.
Another addition: Gailey kept Sanders and our DB coach… two smart moves.
I stand by what I said in April: I think the no BS environment is going to produce good results. I’m not sure the results will show in the 2010 record. I think the 2010 results will be measured in player development, more discipline, better execution, and a tougher team overall with an offensive identity. That will all translate well into 2011 and beyond as Nix adds more talent to the team.
Also, I am a fan of the George Edwards hiring. I sense he’s a good combination of X’s-and-O’s and emotional leader. Most good defensive coordinators are, and I think Edwards will be successful.

Disapprove
Unfortunately, bullet one in Gailey’s recent bio above is enough for me to disapprove. The parallels between Edwards 2010 and Rob Johnson 2001 are so obvious it’s scary. The only difference is that Johnson was more physically gifted and probably a better leader. In fairness to Gailey, I blame Nix for this situation more than anyone else. I like Gailey otherwise; it’s really unfortunate that the offense will probably be starting from scratch in 2011- possibly stunting Gailey’s entire program irreversibly.

I’d have to say you are the most vocal anti-Edwards guy on Rumblings. Port Royal is to Trent Edwards as Kurrupt is to Chris Kelsay. lol

Well on the positive side of things, I’m very Pro- George Wilson and Jairus Byrd.

i feel like we are just as talented with those two as any two safeties on our roster. I don’t even care if we have Whitner or Scott, though I ditch Scott before Whitner. Like to see someone else (D. Harris) step up and be significant force at SS. won’t happen, but I can dream

If he brings some toughness to this team, some part – just a part – will be totally satisfied. And approving :P
If we’re going to lose a lot, can we at least lose well?
My kind of coach......
I like Chan; he seems to be a no nonsense coach. Not afraid to get in the face of a “Superstar” if he has to. Toughness….. Gotta like this quote:

2010 - "Chan"ge is finally here......
I was not sure at first...
I was disappointed in not getting Shanahan or Cowher but sometimes missing on something you would like opens the door of opportunity for others. So far Chan has started giving this team a new identity and the foundation for future success is being laid. I don’t expect this team to turn it around immediately but we will see a toughness we haven’t seen in years and we know the stupid mistakes that have plague the Bills thru the DJ era won’t be tolerated!!
