Buffalo Bills vs Cincinnati Bengals GameThread (Re-Air)

Buffalo Bills 35, Cincinnati Bengals 20
FINAL (Saturday 8/28)
Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, NY
Bills inactives: RB Fred Jackson, RB Marshawn Lynch, TE Shawn Nelson, TE Derek Schouman, OT Ed Wang, NT Kyle Williams, JLB Reggie Torbor, FS Jairus Byrd
Saturday night, the Buffalo Bills defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 35-20 in a blacked out football game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Tonight, that victory will re-air at 7:00 PM (Rochester, WHAM) or 8:00 PM (Buffalo, WKBW) depending on your current location.
This open thread is for those of you who did not view the game last night to leave live thoughts of what you already (mostly) know during tonight's telecasts. Also accepted topics of conversation: why C.J. Spiller is the best football player ever, how much you miss Bobby April, or the 2010 Emmy Awards. Enjoy, folks.

Re:
C.J. Spiller IS the greatest player ever…I am only half-kidding. He’s going to be a superstar in this league like Buffalo hasn’t had since the Super Bowl years…I have never believed in building a team around running backs, but I am quickly warming up to the notion.

How did the crowd receive T.O.? Any ovation at all, or was it a non-point?

Lots of cheering pre-game, lots of booing during the game.

i think it was because he was actually catching passes and not dropping them.

Unfortunately
Many of us other folks in different states will have to wait until Monday to see the game. Are you going to re-rethread? ;)

The game
How did Troup hold up with the 1st teamers? The blogger from ESPN (whom I’m not a fan of) ripped Hardy’s return to the field last night. Accurate? Maybin doesn’t look like a high school kid who won a contest anymore? I’m intrigued. I I read that Meredith played well, any chance he unseats Bell?

I saw Hardy make one decent catch on a Fitzpatrick throw, didn’t really notice him the rest of the evening.

except for the illegal motion penalty and the 2 dropped passes…….
I'm not sure we have the tools or the talent....

In response to Port Royal’s questions: Troup held up fine. Hardy caught one pass for 30 yards, but then dropped two more that he should have had. At least he got himself open. Howver, he did not look as good as David Nelson, who did a very impressive job of route-running on his 20 yard TD catch and who delivered some big-time downfield blocks to free up RB’s. Meredith did have a good game, but Bell was absolutely solid.
i think troup held up fine, but unremarkably so. He may be “stout” (insert random nose tackle adjective here) at the point of attack, but he still doesn’t look all that big on the d line.
Maybin had flashes of brilliance – against the third team. Take it for what its worth.

Is Green at least holding his own in run blocking?
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun
he looked absolutely terrible on many occasions.

Green
Green has looked bad to me in the games I’ve seen this preseason too…I’ll watch for him during tonight’s replay…maybe Meredith gets in the lineup over Green for the opener? Green’s resume with Oakland was not very impressive when Buffalo signed him…I thought he was sort of a bizarre free agent target initially and remain unconvinced from what I’m reading and seeing.

He was a bizarre target. Don’t think they planned on going after a RT, and that the Butler retirement caught them off guard.

Really?
Has it really come to this? A gameday thread to a tape delay? I admit the offseason is a bit too long, but are you starving for football this bad? Wait. Oh yeah…I opened up this thread myself. The offense looked awesome last night from the highlights and will look just as good in tape delay motion too. It is encouraging to see them play so well, but I still keep in the back of my mind that when the other team tries hard too, it may be a different story.
Spiller is the man…no question about that. Hopefully the line can give him more room to run and that he has to make less plays with his elusiveness. He will break huge yards when that happens. Lets hope Roscoe can keep catching passes during the games that count. The run defense still needs some work. Cedric Benson ripped off some pretty good runs and what I took from the highlights, Whitner was just watching the plays from afar. Is Lee Evans still on the team? Non-existant last night.

And then get burnt for a TD on the first play of week 1.

just as long as you live on the first floor ;-)

Actually....
a physical impossibility… :-0
The draft dawns a new year for Buffalo Bills fans, so let optimism reign supreme!!! After all, we are now, UNDEFEATED!!!!
I'm curious to see how foolish my selection of Spiller was by season's end.
I have a feeling he’ll do well as a flex, provided he stays healthy. Oh and it’s quite possible that when the Bills and Bengals play on the same field, the NFL’s worst color combination are on display. Turrible.

just a few observations, and questions.
Extended drives. It felt like there were more long drives in this game then in all of last year.
Turnovers. This makes two games in a row with none. That will win some games.
Red zone efficiency. 100% and this has been a major problem in the past.
Penalties. OK there are still a few players who just cant stop, but for the most part this is a vast improvement.
WR #2. Who is it supposed to be? Stevie has been a non factor. 3 for 16 yrds over the last two games.
Play calling. Chan is making the biggest difference for this offence.
What happened to Chad Jackson? No stats this week.
O-line still improving. I sure liked what I saw on that screen play just before the half. Levitre threw the block that sprung Spiller, and Hang, and Wood were down at the 15 yrd line in front of Spiller. Spiller even said he might could have scored on that play(if he had broke back inside).
Wonder why Brohm was given clean up duty...
Easily could have been handled by Brown.

my guess would be that brohm and brown will see the majority of the reps in week 4 preseason to see who gets the 3qb spot.
