Rep Counter: Charting Bills' First-Teamers Through Preseason
Over the past few days, I've had several requests from readers to update the number of reps the Buffalo Bills have played throughout the preseason offensively and defensively. I plan to compile this data more thoroughly during the regular season; for now, I can only offer stats for the first team offense and defense, and the offensive data doesn't include the preseason opener against Washington (which I've unfortunately already deleted from the DVR).
As you might be able to guess, injuries have led to a lot of different players seeing action with the first team; this is particularly true defensively, as five of the Bills' 11 projected starters (Kyle Williams, Chris Kelsay, Paul Posluszny, Reggie Torbor, Jairus Byrd) have missed extended action. Rotating players on both sides of the ball also leads to a larger number of participants. Good, old-fashioned substitutions and the occasional unique personnel package allowed a few guys to sneak reps in, as well.
After the jump, you'll find first-team defensive data from all three preseason matchups, and offensive data from the Indianapolis and Cincinnati games. With both units unlikely to see extended playing time in the preseason finale this Thursday, this will be the last time we chart reps this preseason - and it's the last time the data will be this limited, as well, as we'll be charting formations, yardage gained/allowed, penalty yardage, opponent formations and more once the regular season starts.

doesn’t include the preseason opener against Washington (which I’ve unfortunately already deleted from the DVR).
Not unfortunate and totally understandable. Must have been your subconscious taking over.
What we call our despair is often only the painful eagerness of unfed hope.
if its not on brian’s dvr, it didn’t happen.

Very Good Indicator
You can see who the coaches have confidence in going into the season. Example number of reps between Spencer Johnson Vs John McCargo. Not conclusive but pretty darn close to the mind set of the coaches.

Regarding Spencer Johnson: his rep numbers were inflated a bit against Cincinnati thanks a) to the absence of Kyle Williams, and b) to Cincinnati’s widespread use of the no-huddle and three and four-receiver sets. George Edwards was taking Troup (and Ellis, and Davis) off the field, moving Kelsay down to DE, and putting Johnson inside with Stroud in their four-lineman nickel package. Usually, Williams takes both the 3-4 NT and nickel DT roles.

Just a few notes on players from my review:
- In two straight weeks, Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer have tried to go deep to a league-reputed receiver on a quick snap to try to catch the Bills, and CB Leodis McKelvin, off guard. Both times, McKelvin nearly picked the pass.
- Liked what I saw out of Demetrius Bell. Moved very well. Did a nice, if unspectacular job. Looked like he knew what he was doing. Keep the faith, and your fingers crossed that he can stay penalty-free.
- Cornell Green… not so much. Gets caught reaching an awful lot in pass protection. Wood and Levitre, meanwhile, hit the ground a ton; they seem to have balance issues. Both were beaten soundly at least once. Hangartner looks excellent.
- Coaches aren’t going to be super thrilled about the idea of Spiller in the backfield on third downs until he gets much, much better in pass protection. VERY shaky in that department. Look for him to motion out wide with Marshawn or Corey McIntyre in the backfield.
- Bills used a lot of 3-2 dime in this one. Stroud at NT, Edwards at LDE, Maybin at RDE. Two linebackers – Kelsay and Posluszny, both standing. 6 DBs, with Florence in the slot. This is an interesting look, as the Bills can put a safety (Wilson) in the box and choose who to blitz (37, 90, 51, 29) and who to cover and change it up a lot. Expect to see a lot of these looks as the season progresses. And if you’re still worried about the defense, keep in mind that they’ve operated out of two looks (34 base, 41 nickel) basically the entire preseason.
- Maybin is wildly inconsistent, but when he’s on, he looks very good. Next step for him: having more good moments than awful moments.
- Tough to get a good read on Troup. Looks stout, gets double-teamed a lot. Still don’t see him on the field much early in the season.
I can (try to) answer questions about specific players if you’ve got them.

Cornell Green has looked a half-step above dreadful in pass protection. I haven’t watched much of the second halves of the games thus far. Any chance Meredith or (insert pretty much anyone else) over takes RT?

If only we had a capable RT on the roster....
I don’t see Meredith as a viable option there, at least yet. Not that Green is a viable option, but I think he can be a slightly better run blocker than Meredith…

Yeah it was more wishful thinking. I haven’t really seen Meredith play this preseason so I was hoping he somehow got dramatically better.

He is one Bill
That has gotten alot of playing Time. If I am not mistaken, he has been on the field more than off of it this preseason. Similar to Chris Ellis. They both have been filling alot of voids.

Yeah, but I feel alot better about Ellis producing for us right now vs. Meredith
He has looked not so hot out there the past couple of games. Ellis is really surprising me.

Along with Parrish it looks like McCargo has been rejuvenated as well (just not to the same extent). Have you noticed the same upon further revoew?
by telka on Aug 31, 2010 9:07 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
He has zero reps with the first team, and I haven’t re-watched the second-teamers at all. (I have a life, man!) From what I remember during games, McCargo has looked very good against second and third units.

Green
Do you see them keeping a TE in next to Green or having a back stay in protection on that side of the line to assist Green? With Wood and Levitre hitting the ground, are they over extending and getting swam on? Trying to cut block too much? Any pattern? Thanks Brian.
by TedWashington'sRobotDance on Aug 31, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
I think it’s more likely they use chipping backs on Green’s side. Stupar has spent a lot of time on the left side next to Bell.
Levitre is overextending. Wood sometimes has trouble remaining engaged, then overextends to try to compensate.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 31, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Are those very correctable looking mistakes?
Sounds like technique breakdowns….

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Oh, most definitely. By and large, they’re both playing well. Wood just looks more controlled and on top of his game.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 31, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I saw this one pass play against Cincy (and believe me I wouldn’t ask you to look for it) where Levitre pulled to the right giving additional support to the right side of the line (Green) and McIntyre stepped into the guard spot. McIntyre being the bowling ball he is filled in pretty well and met the defender instead of waiting for him to come to him. Although I’m not sure there’s a technical term for it besides the guard pulling but maybe the coaches are using that as a way to shore up Green’s shortcomings.
Bell
Besides penalty-free, I think we have to hope he’s injury-free more than anything….That’s the biggest issue with him.

I’ve noticed Maybin is much better coming out of a 2 point stance than a 3/4 point stance. He’s more under control.
I think Troup’s effect is going to be hard to measure, since he’s not a penetrating NT. He may get reps and do his job without much of a noticable, personal impact that is measurable.
Big fan of the 3-2 in the dime, and 2-4 in the nickel. It gives the defense more blitz flexibility.
Starting the official Buffalo "Draft Owen Marecic in 2011" campaign.
Yeah, now lets hope our Blitzers can ram home a sack every few blitzes, rather than our pass D getting carved up
due to lack of an extra pair of hands back there!
Maybin does look alot better out of the 2 rather than the 3, your dead on there.

Maybin needs to get out of the 4 point stance
He just looks terrible trying to fire out of that stance and has been instantly engulfed as if he were going up against a giant amoeba.
I agree the 2 point stance might be his best option, but I’d like to at least see him in the 3 point stance more, at least in lieu of the 4 point stance he’s been using.
~K
"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
if he’s not in a track stance how is he going to get a running start for his single move???
yeah, i went there. but i agree with you. diversification of moves and technique starts with…well, the start. Standing up at the line could make use of his speed against a tackle.
by quantumuprising on Sep 1, 2010 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions
That’s not true, actually. Maybin has solid straight-line speed and he hustles, but his true speed rush is at its absolute quickest when he’s got a hand on the ground. He’s just not particularly polished with it, as DJ says, and gets really off-balance. He needs to learn control.
That’s not to say that he wouldn’t benefit from standing up more often.

Carrington
1 first team rep for Carrington. is he still hurt or do you think that’s pretty indicative of where he’s going to be slotted for the beginning of the season?
and thanks for the breakdown. great stuff.
Carrington got one sub rep in the 34 Base in the Washington game. He’s healthy; Stroud and Edwards are just in fantastic shape. Don’t expect Carrington to get a lot of time early in the season.

He's probably not even the main backup at DE
Unless Spencer Johnson gets cut.
~K
"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
He’ll be the main backup for 34 looks. No question. That’s really the only spot where they can get him PT.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 31, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with you there Brian
I just think Chan and Edwards will do their best to get Troup and Alex reps, but only when it won’t hurt the team too much to do so. I think they feel they can be competitive with the vets on this team, so we should see those guys get alot of PT.

Brian
Can you speculate at all on what type of offensive sets you expect Gailey to run in Week 1? How much do you think will be “new looks?” Man, cuts and working the waiver wire for a player or 2 would be huge for this organization. Gotta keep improving this roster
"Show me the baby: - Buddy Nix
Gailey’s been pretty forthright about that: he’s going to run a handful of plays that the team executes well out of a variety of different looks, and build from there.

Questions
1. Do you expect Meredith to take one or two series from Bell each half in the first few games. Do limit Bell’s overall snaps to 40ish per game?
2. Who do you see as the most common #4 WR.
3. Do you expect Lynch and Spiller to be on the field at the same time (assuming Fred Jackson is injured for the first couple weeks).
4. What should we expect from Chris Ellis in terms of amount of time he will spend on the field and will he line up as DE in the nickle or dime alignments
5. What do we know about the Torbor & Byrd injuries.
1) Not unless he needs to. Bell looks ready for the season.
2) Fourth wide receiver? David Nelson. Fourth receiver? C.J. Spiller.
3) Absolutely, yes.
4) That’s hard to guess at, because they’ve been so limited in alignment during the preseason. Kelsay and Maybin are the preferred DEs in four-lineman looks, though, and Edwards will see time there before Ellis does. He’ll start at Jack until Torbor is healthy, and then he looks like the chief backup at both positions.
5) Torbor should be back early in the season. Anyone’s guess on Byrd.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 31, 2010 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions
Brian, my buddy and I were joking the Bills should just run a modified wishbone with Feddy at the QB spot
And Lynch, Bell and Spiller as the three backs and just go wildcat/wishbone (wishcat? wildbone?) on other teams. It won’t happen outside Madden I am sure, but that would be fun to watch, wouldn’t it?

Mmm… no, actually, I don’t think I’d have fun watching that. I like real offense.

Just an addition:
There’s a great write-up on Bell in today’s Buffalo News (check out Web rumblings). He says his knee has no pain and OL coach Joe D’Alessandris says he just needs to get back used to going in short spurts side to side. I think he’s gonna be 100% but the article thinks he may need to be spelled.

Do you think it is possible for D. Nelson to eventually take the No 2 spot? I liked Steven Johnson going in but it seems like he doesn’t attack the ball or have strong hands when the DB is trying to seperate him from the ball. I know he is a rookie (undrafted at that) but Nelson looks like the real deal
Johnson has been fine. Had a nice catch-and-run against Cincy. I think Nelson is absolutely ideal in his current role – a tough-to-cover possession receiver out of the slot. Let’s let him make a name for himself there before trying to slide him up the depth chart.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 31, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed, Nelson is a freaking nightmare for D coordinators in the slot where he can use his lank over the middle
and the fact he can out jump CBs and Safeties on inside routes is a huge plus for this O. I can see him and Parrish splitting alot of reps there.

Yes, the blocking was poor on that play, but watch the reply – Spiller literally takes the handoff and immediately runs backwards. He’s got to learn to look for a cutback lane on the weak side.

Kawika Mitchell. The Bills haven’t blitzed much, period. Most frequent blitzer might be Drayton Florence out of the nickel corner spot. A few stunts and twists and things like that.
