"I need to be a leader on this team and this offensive line. I need to play well. I need to be a guy we can count on. I played up and down at times last year. I need to be a consistent player, a guy we don't need to worry about, one of those offensive linemen you never hear about."

If Eric Wood stays healthy, he’s going to be such a good player for us. I really like that kid.

Wood for Captain

If everyone on the team could have the same level of accountability and mindset that Wood has, we might just have a record over 500. Its refreshing to hear that from a player. I am really pulling for this kid. I have to retire my TO jersey so it looks like I am getting an Eric Wood jersey

In fairness, you would probably get a similar quote from over half of the players…

I got nothing.

by Jason from OH-IO on Aug 5, 2010 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

in all fairness, it wouldn’t mean much coming from most of them.

this, together with his comments to maybin the other day, make wood by far one of my favorite players.

by quantumuprising on Aug 5, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Why wouldn’t it? All it would be is words just like Wood’s. I must have missed that playoff drive Wood led us on. I like Wood too and he’s got good potential, but give me a break. He’s no world beater yet. And truth is, like he said, he was up and down last year which means he lost his own share of battles. He needs to worry about earning his own money.

by phaze1 on Aug 5, 2010 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he was being humble… His “downs” were a lot higher than most OL’s “highs”. He played great last year.

I got nothing.

by Jason from OH-IO on Aug 5, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

He played okay last year just like he said. He’s not being humble he’s being real. And he played in 10 games. Like I said, I’m a Wood fan, but he’s not saying anything the other players wouldn’t say. Even the man folks love to hate, Maybin has said he needs to step up, work harder, get better etc. Yet folks call him arrogant and cocky. Wood says basically the same thing and it’s “I love Wood.” It’s weird to me.

it wouldn’t because there’s a difference between the guys who say these things because they mean them and they can back them up, and the guys who say them to say them. So far, wood’s actions speak louder than his words, which i can’t say for a lot of other people you might hear things like this from.

by quantumuprising on Aug 5, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I get what you’re saying. But what actions are you speaking of? He had an up and down rookie season that unfortunately ended after 10 games.

One can say something and mean it and still not get the desired results. I think the fact that he said this is nice, but it’s all about what happens on the field. Same as for the rest of the players. Wood has a lot to prove just as the team itself does.

No offense to my fellow Ohioan, but I cant remember the last time there was any accountability in the Bills locker room. I know its just lip service right now, but its good to hear. But I actually believe that Wood is going to back up his comments

by MarkyMarkO on Aug 5, 2010 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Really

I will go back and find the quotes, but I know Edwards and Poz made similar comments last year, I am sure there were probably more.

I got nothing.

The point is that he’s said it to the news, no one else has to this point.

LOVE LOVE LOVE

ERIC WOOD!

This quote is pretty canned language, but regardless I have a serious man-crush on this guy. He will be the next Kent Hull when he eventually transitions to center…. In the meantime he can solidify himself as one of the best guards in the league. At least we know we will not have any questions at guard with him and Levitre (as long as they can stay healthy).

I got nothing.

Eric Wood is a beast, he should be in the top 5 AFC East O-linemen if he stays healthy

rookie year....

Last year, if there was ever a sudden movement forward in that mess of humanity called the trenches, I would rewind it till I was sure what happened, and everytime it was wood tagging a guy. He is the real deal….

no more injuries!

this what they call being a leader folks

Is it lip service or “canned language”? Perhaps. Does he really believe it? I think so. Guys who are willing to critique their own abilities/performance while inspiring a sense of accountability in others based on their performance are leaders. It can be contagious….. let’s hope it is. He’s young and needs to prove a lot more on the field but let’s all agree that the kid has the right attitude about the game and may eventually evolve into a consistently excellent player and a respected teammate in the locker room.

You know

I wasn’t “thrilled” with the pick when it happened, nor was I truly upset. I just wasn’t sure it was a great pick at that point. Hello humble pie. This is the attitude you like to see, and the things you like to hear out of someone. This is the reason he has become a favorite of mine. He’s far from content, and I imgaine he’ll do whatever it takes to come back stronger than before his injury.

As far as i’m aware, he never backed down from the comment he made to Maybin. If so, good. I hate when guys try to rewind out of something they know they meant to say.

Levitre

I think what gets lost in our lust for Wood is how good Levitre played last year. This guy will become a probowl guard. Too bad injuries/poor play from our tackles forced him to play outside last year stunting his development.

I got nothing.

Last year levitre defiantly out performed wood. But both had great rookie years. Especially when you consider the conditions they came into. However what I like about wood is that he is the first high draft pick I can remember coming into buffalo that was sincerely happy to be there. He fits into a city like buffalo. In both attitude and ethics. He has the small town grid iron attitude we valued in heathcliff!

Now if we can find a qb to match.

Some are just born to be linemen

Wood’s one of them. He would have fit in perfectly with the lines in the early 90’s although he wouldn’t have started…just sayin’.
