Source says #Patriots have "strong" interest in Aaron Schobel. But this is no Seau situation. He wants big $.

I don’t see Aaron joining the Pats, quite frankly. I’m not saying this because I have a romantic idea in mind that Schobel would never join our archrival, but rather that 1) the Pats are unlikely to be willing to meet his monetary demands (likely 5-6 million per season at least) and 2) he has pointed out that he wants to be more home with his wife and kids in Columbus, Texas and if he truly means that, then there are only two realistic teams for Schobel to want to join – the Cowboys or Texans.
My money is on him joining the Texans

I can't see him joining the Cowboys

They don’t want to give big bucks to a guy to play OLB who has never done it before.

by Leo Crow on Aug 8, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

we could only hope that somehow Schobel is a Cowboy

and they release some of those young linebackers that they have had in their training, and running their defensive system. They looked good in the HOF game, the only thing about the HOF that looked good was Dallas’s linebacking core… maybe they could release one or two and we could get them. everyone knows we need em. ; )

agreed.

i could see him joining the saints too. close enough to texas and to the big game with a need for pass rushers…

I think the Saints are his best option. 4-3, primed to contend for a repeat title. Close to Texas. What’s not to love for him there?

New Orleans isn’t that far away either.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

I agree with your thinking and I also think that he would give the Texas teams a "homestate" discount that other teams won't get

While it might cost the Pats 6 million a year for him, he might play for Dallas or Houston for only 1 million since he would be much closer to his family.

I would love for him to go to the Pats, we’d run left all day long.

by Buffalonian on Aug 8, 2010 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

I think anyone with half a brain knows the Pats would be interested in this guy. But I doubt Schobel would go to any team outside of Texas if the reason was that he wanted to keep his kids in school. Even worse, if the split from Buffalo was really on good terms then I’d hope he would stay out of the AFC East.

Another thing that bothers me is any of these news media types can say “A source told me…” I’ve always believed that people like Clayton and Schefler use “sources” to spread their rumors.

If he goes to any team outside of Texas then he was just ready to cut ties with Buffalo. At least he did it in a classier way that McGahee.

Yeah, I can’t say delaying his decision for months on end was classy on Schobel’s part.

by Buffalonian on Aug 8, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, there is one more team.

New Orleans is about as far from Columbus as Texas, and it would make a lot of sense for them. I could see Aaron thriving as a Saint, and Greg Williams was the guy that drafted him, so, yeah, I could see him playing there.

The Pats are still sore from us getting Bledsoe and Milloy

It feels like they’ve been trying to leech players off of us constantly since then. It’s definitely stirring up my hatred of them, and at the very least, it’s getting REALLY annoying.

It's not the quality of the player

Sam Aiken, Antowain Smith, Sam Gash, Freddie Smith, now they’re courting Schobel. You laugh, but those don’t have to be great players for them to really help the Pats at the Bills’ expense with whatever knowledge they can bring.

sure didn't hurt us the game

milloy got traded here 4 days before the season opener. that said, there is little likelihood for long term gain, so those guys benefited from the experience in the league, and then got picked up as FA, and had mild to moderate success. So what is the concern really? we didn’t have to pay him, he wasn’t gonna even play probably, and good if he is a Patriot as a LB. we can exploit him all game rather than watch him get exploited and lose because of it.

Very true,

Milloy’s situation was much different for guys like Aiken and Antowain (who I was happy to see get a ring). I just really hope that he doesn’t go to the Pats, it would hurt me.

by Buffalonian on Aug 8, 2010 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

So why do you feel the Pats would be "sore" from the Bills getting those 2???

They fleeced us on the Bledsoe trade, and they released Milloy because they thought he was done, and not worth the money. And neither did anything of note against the Pats once they were Bills…..

by Kurupt on Aug 8, 2010 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Because of the way it happened

We got their starting QB for almost ten years, then not long afterwards we practically snatched up Milloy. Regardless of how either move turned out, the Bills grabbed those guys and got a mental edge on the Pats because of it. It’s logical to assume that as the big brother Patriots, when Buffalo does something like that to you, and then smacks you 31-0, in the immediate aftermath, unless you haven’t got a vindictive bone in your body, you’ll be wanting to punish them for the attitude, to teach them a lesson.

And yeah, they beat us 31-0 right afterward. But they didn’t beat us in the way we messed with them, acquisition. So in the years that followed, they did it whenever they got the chance, whenever it didn’t mess with their larger plan.

Yeah, I totally disagree

What mental edge did the Bills get with Bledsoe? They had just won the SB with Tom Brady, and Belichick knew EXACTLY how to beat Bledsoe. They were the ones who had the mental advantage there….

Come on. Haven’t you ever wanted to get someone back just because of what happened, not because of whether or not it turned out okay in the end? This isn’t so much about a cost/benefit analysis. Vendettas seldom are. Buffalo jumped on doing something to you because they thought they saw a small chance they could actually whomp you, and then they actually did. If I were New England, I’m not so sure I wouldn’t teach them a lesson by turning their game on them whenever I could. That’s just the feeling I get from Belichick and the Patriots whenever they roll in yet another Bills player.

No

They got a 1st round pick, which they used on Ty Warren. Warren has been a major part of the Pats’ 3-4 front since. I’d have to say the 7 years and counting the Pats have gotten out of him were better than the 10 or so quality games that Bledsoe gave the Bills.

by Kurupt on Aug 8, 2010 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually

They had to trade up one slot to select Warren. The Bledsoe deal gave them the #14 pick, which they sent to Chicago with a 6th rounder to move up to 13 to pick Warren.

They got the Wilson 2nd round pick as a result of moving down with Baltimore from #19 into round 2 (which also netted them a 1st the next year, which turned into Vince Wilfork), and then flipping that pick for the Texans’ 2nd rounder to be used on Wilson.

i get that this is a business

and that the pats attract a lot of vets, but if schobel goes there after we graciously let him out of his contract and obligations here, i will be pretty upset at him. you dont crap on the organization that has just treated you with class you dont often see in the nfl by going to a division rival…. it would really bring my opinion on schobel down…

The fact that he even told them that he wants 5-6 mil pisses me off...

it means he is contemplating playing for a team far from his home, that runs a 3-4, that is not the Bills. Schobel pisses me off more and more every day, he seems to be a liar and a schemer who likes to pretend he’s a nice guy. F Schobel and the Pats, I hope he signs there for 6mil and he sucks as an OLB.

The Patriots don’t really run a true 3-4 anymore. They seem to be slowly transitioning back to more of a 4-3 base, but it’s definitely a hybrid. Schobel would play with his hand on the ground in New England.
