Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

This camp is especially important to me because of the fact that I missed camp last year because of my contract situation. Fans were quick to label me as a paycheck player without knowledge of the situation. That was tough to go through because of the fact that I have always been a player that gives 110 % on the practice field. Any coach I have ever played for will tell you that nobody has ever practiced harder, but people weren’t seeing me in that light and it bothered me. Now, after having a season spent learning and growing as a Pro, its finally my opportunity to establish myself as a dominant force in this game on the biggest stage in front of the most loyal fans I have ever seen (outside of PSU, lol).

Well, it’s equally tough getting drafted in the 1st round and being handed a huge contract. It’s tough to be given the opportunity, yes, but also tough to handle the responsibility. I think that his slack shouldn’t be so loose given he was counted on as a player at the top of his draft class.

He barely played at Penn State, only starting like 9 games. I am pretty sure the Bills were aware of this and didn’t expect him to step in and dominate. If they had wanted someone to jump in and start, they probably would have drafted Brain Orakpo.

I don’t think the majority of people here were out of line regarding Maybin. If you show up to collect your paycheck you better show up on the field on Sunday. It is called being a Pro.

Of course not knowing the full details of the negotiations, I still lose respect for rookies who have long hold outs. They hurt themselves, their teammates, and the organization for which they play for.

Keepin' the faith!

by nickdaniels on Aug 9, 2010 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

If the team wanted them there, they could start negotiations in April. They could also agree to move up on the $1-3 million that gets in the way of any first-round deal. Organizations are just as much to blame for holdouts as players are. It’s not coincidental that we’ve had the second-to-last player signed the last two years. Seeing the way the Bills dealt with Peters, would you really trust them enough to take less now with the promise of getting paid later?

by Dr. Brackish Okun on Aug 9, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

unless everyone starts in April

it won’t matter. Agents use relative slotting of picks to gauge the relative contract. But don’t worry all…. after the owner strike there will be a rookie cap, and the “holdout” will cease to exist in terms of rookie contracts.

personally, i hope i am wrong

and there is not need for a strike, as the CBA somehow gets worked out. That said, i agree that it will be a wonderous thing when we don’t have to worry about sinking the franchise on blown draft selections, and the vets who have earned it, make the money that the rookies that haven’t yet played, have been stealing away from them.

I don’t hate him. I do think that it’s time he talks soft and carries a big stick. Word fall hollow on fans who don’t see it carried out on the field. Look at what has happened with Donte Whitner, who really has been pretty steady in his career. He likes to talk and most fans just wish he’d keep quiet and take his play to the next level.

That’s at least where i’m at with Maybin.

Say this much for Maybin

He’s saying the right things. Now he just needs to show something on the field. As a sidenote, I am amazed at how many Bills fans seem to want some of our players to fail. I just cant do that personally. Like I despise Trent Edwards, but I’d never actively root for him to fail.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

I’m with you there. Except the despising Edwards part. Maybe my feeling would be more like EXTREMELY dissapointed. And I’m getting to be about half way there with Maybin & McKelvin after what I’ve been hearing lately. But it’s early so I still have hope they can turn it around. And like you said, I would never root against them.

i have been disappointed

but ultimately feel like he could prove the doubters wrong. He looked good at practice on saturday. he threw a tighter spiral with more velocity than either Fitz or Brohm… and honestly, Brown looked as good as i could hope. If things don’t pan out this year for Trent, don’t be complaining when we don’t draft one next year… cuz if this kid gets to work in a system that benefits the rest of the team, he could be highly successful. He has a quick release, good velocity, and he is real tall. If you add good decisions to the equation, then this kid could be just as good as any. That said, if we are awful this season and end up sub 4 wins, we will be making sure that we do what we can to draft a QB early, whenever play picks up again.

I can live with that. In fact, if that happened I’d be thrilled. Then we could use our first rounder on LT, because I still think we need help there too. If by some miracle Bell or Meredith panned out as well, I’d be ecstatic. But I think that is asking a bit much.

by billskk69 on Aug 9, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

it may very well be.

but look at the guys in the league that need a few years to be successful…. oh, wait, that is most of them. huh. so what are we griping about? give the guys a chance. That said, if Bell can catch up to his athleticism (don’t forget he is Malone’s illegitimate kid so he comes from athletic background) in terms of play and mental reps, which he should still have been getting, and continues to get…. He could pan out just fine. These players lack experience, hopefully by the end of this season, we will see that fact is the main, and maybe even sole problem, and with good coaching, we will see them get better.

amazed at how many Bills fans seem to want some of our players to fail

I think a lot of people, including myself are starved for a winner and want so desperately for the team to turn things around, they/we are looking for people to blame and are quick to criticize everyone if they are not developing performing at an optimal level all at once.

Unfortunately, the Bills have not struck lightning in the bottle with any one player in the past 8-10 years that are “superstars” in this league or “difference makers” on the field or football team. We’ve had a lot of nice players and others that have been “busts”. No matter the position, we need the Maybins, Spillers, McKelvin’s to be dominating… unfortunately these things do not happen overnight because it takes more than just a great player to make a player great. It takes coaching, organizational commitment, schemes, luck/good fortune, and hard work. Unfortunately, some players still fall short even with all those things.

It will be interesting to see how Maybin develops this year. I am looking forward to seeing Whitner go nuts as he thinks the scheme on defense is perfect for him… Along those lines, how Spiller will be used in our offense, etc.

It is not that I wish our players to “fail”. It is more wanting them to succeed too quickly and getting disappointed a long the way.

uhhh what?

we praised wood for getting on his players to be better (basically). Wood has achieved far more than Maybin at this point. Wood is the starter and was having a pretty good rookie year until his injury, has been able to come back from such a horrific injury and is now actively practicing. How can you really say that Wood has achieved nothing?

I think some people hate Maybin (for whatever reason) and that translate into a lot of hate towards him, but I believe he needs some more time and could develop into a great player, but with that said, the man has made many claims without doing anything yet. I get that he wants to change peoples perspective of him, but those that wish him well and root for him still will, and those that dont, still wont, until he shows it. Once he gets a couple sacks and turns into a force, he will have the love and admiration of the entire fan base. thats why my response was what it was. I dont care about the talk, just do it, and great things will follow.

Maybe?

It is very difficult for me to like him or believe in him. Part of that may stem from being a PITT alum and hating anything and everything from Crappy Valley. I was extremely angry when he was drafted because it seems to me(again could be bias) that every highly touted PSU player in the last 10 or 15 years has fizzled out in the NFL or been simply average.

When I think of past players who were the hardest workers on the team, I can’t imagine any of them proclaiming themselves as the “hardest worker.” Respect is earned, not given because of inspiring blog entries.

A wee bit thin skinned...

Maybin held out only to sign what was a fairly obvious deal that could have been finalized before camp started. He spent all season trying to catch up and never did. He had no impact on the field whatsoever. Maybin followed up his lost 2009 by failing to impress in the 2010 offseason. Sure, he’s learning a new defense. Given how long it took him to learn the Tampa 2 I don’t know that he’ll catch onto the 3-4 all that quickly. Translation: another year with minimal impact. Chris Ellis is getting praise from Gailey; haven’t heard much about Maybin from Gailey.

Maybin would be better off absorbing the criticism and using it for motivation instead of whining about being seen in an unflattering light. After all, he has the power to change that perception by proving he was worth his selection.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

I’m staying patient with all of the young talent on this team because most of our talent is under 27 years old but, I want to see somebody prove that their worth getting excited about next year.
Aaron Maybin is a prime example of why I have this attitude. This kid has all the workout numbers scouts drool over but, hasn’t shown any other signs of being a competant LB. Just a couple weeks ago at around 1 am I was sitting in the McDonald’s drive thru behind Maybin. The Cadillac symbol was replaced by a similar symbol with AM inside and the license plate was mayhem 1 so i had my friend get out of the car and check if it was him and it was. So lets see you walk the walk maybin

Let your legs do the running not Maybin.

Anyone know what he weighed in at? I know when he was drafted there was a hope he would would fill in his frame and gain some body mass. To me he looks smaller this year than he did last. Same with Poz. His neck shrunk, it’s only 90% the size of his head instead of last years 120%.

I’m not the biggest fan of Maybin the player or his draft position but after making it through all your posts I feel bad for the guy. He’s 21, been ripped on publicly for the last year and hasn’t played as well as anyone (himself included) would like thus far in camp. So with that in mind he throws a post up on his blog proclaiming that he’s excited and working hard. What’s wrong with that? Yeah, K was right about the sense of entitlement , especially in saying that “its finally my opportunity to establish myself as a dominant force…” but a lot of you were admiring that same arrogance/confidence in Jimmy Clausen four months ago; comparing him to Rivers. Give Maybin a year. Then we can lay into him for his poor play and awful blog photos.

Enjoying my annual three months of optimism.

Maybin had a year. He didn’t do anything with it. So far he’s underwhelmed at training camp to the point that he’s running with the second unit. Hopefully he figures it out and comes on strong, starts and has a good year. So far he’s done nothing to justify his roster spot.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

A 22 yr old 2nd yr player playing on the second team...

is fine with me. I know he was drafted early, give him some more time. If came back as a DE again in the 4-3, we might be able to judge him better, but he gets until next year in my mind before I get disappointed in him.

This is a completely understandable POV, but I would like to know how each 1st-round pick from his class is doing with their respective teams. We know about that Orakpo kid, though i’m sure countless people will now take the opportunity to stand on the “shoulda’” podium.

-Maybin played special teams and even made a huge mistake there.
-Larry English had 1 sack and ~30 tackles as a second string LB.
-Robert Ayers got benched and didn’t do anything – no sacks and about the same number of takles as maybin.
-Orakpo was a stud but epitomized the word “struggling” when it came to dropping back in pass coverage.
-Cushing was the man in just about every capacity, sacks, pics, tackles, play making and debatably, taking steroids.
-Clay Matthews was solid, with excellent sack production, about 60 tackles and solid coverage skills. My understanding is that run defense is his weakness at this point.

Ron from NM put up a fanpost with 2009 1st round pick production that has some of the details that I don’t remember, including starting status. All of the guys I listed are 3-4 olbs except for Maybin and Cushing, but I included Cushing b/c because he’s 6-3 260 monster and would be awesome as a ROLB in any 3-4 defense. To be honest, despite their similarities it is hard to compare Maybin to these guys because he played 4-3 end and they all played olb. In my opinion, 3-4 OLB is an easier position to play than 4-3 end, but the 3-4 obviously has its difficulties as Ayers demonstrated. Maybin’s lack of production is nonetheless discouraging but the fact remains that there is no 2009 1st round pick to whom he can be directly compared. Connor Barwin (Texans) and Michael Johnson (Bengals) would be the best options as their athleticism and skill sets are very similar. I simply don’t have the stats.

All that said, I look forward to comparing Maybin’s 2010 stats at OLB to those of the 1st round picks listed above.

Enjoying my annual three months of optimism.
