Bills Close Preseason With 28-23 Loss To Detroit

The Buffalo Bills jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on the Detroit Lions thanks to a 40-yard touchdown on an interception by Drayton Florence and an efficient opening drive from Trent Edwards and the first-team offense. Buffalo extended the lead to 16-0 before Detroit's reserves put on a show, scoring 28 unanswered points to defeat the Bills in each team's preseason finale. Chad Simpson added a score late in regulation to close out the scoring.

Edwards connected with Lee Evans on a 50-yard reception on his only drive, and completed all four of his passes for 66 yards. Brian Brohm came on relief and played through half of the third quarter, leading two field goal drives and making nice plays with his legs while completing just 7 of 15 passes for 78 yards. He threw an interception that was bobbled by backup tight end J.P. Foschi.

Drew Stanton threw two touchdowns for the Lions, and Paul Pratt returned an errant Levi Brown throw 102 yards for the decisive touchdown.

Buffalo ends the preseason with a 2-2 record. They'll reduce their roster to 53 men by Saturday afternoon, and they'll hit the field for the season opener against Miami a week from this Sunday. Until we start talking about the looming cuts tomorrow, this is the thread to leave your thoughts on this game and the preseason as a whole.

I was very impressed w/ the first team offense the last 3 games, I think we all were. However, if any of the starting O-Linemen go down its gonna be devastating for this team. The depth at O-Line is less then sub par. The run defense also has me a little worried, but I think as the year goes on the defense will come together. They definatley have playmakers on the Defensive side. I know Moats had a bad 2nd half tonight, but I really like him and I think he’ll see some good run this year on defense. Thank god the pretend football is over…LET’S GET IT ON!!!!

The defensive line looks good

And the secondary, though inconsistent, doesn’t look too bad either. It’s those linebackers that are making most of the errors, to my eyes at least.

I really like Troup and Williams. I say get them on the field simoultaneously/situationally and Moats has improved every weak.

From what little I’ve been able to watch the run game seems to be all or nothing with either being possible on any play. See a good stop one play and the next they get gashed. Hopefully nothing the regular season playbook and time can’t fix.

We'll see

Brohm threw 4 passes that were dropped. One of which ended up being intercepted. Those weren’t his fault, they were receiver short comings and that shows up on film. Those drops complete hes 11-15 for 90+ yards and probably gets one into the endzone.

He's clueless out there

Normally a guy like that would be saying adios right now. But luckily for him, he’s shown some skills and ability to make some plays even though he has no idea what he’s doing as a 3-4 ILB. He’s a good developmental player as we have Mitchell to backup both ILB spots, so he can practice and really work at his ST craft. That’s what’s going to get him a jersey on Sunday until he learns the nuances of ILB. Hope we keep him, but hope we don’t plan in playing him on D any time soon….

I think if Poz or Davis goes down for any length of time, we might see a FA brought in to fill the spot.

He would be ok to have out there in garbage time, but not playing when it matters right now. In a couple of seasons I think he could be something, he has some serious athletic chops.

I Really Liked the Job Mr. Chan Gailey did with the squad this offseason. I like how the team is so disciplined that the First string Oline didn’t have many, if any, false starts and the team as a whole, except for Drayton Florence, tonight doesn’t give him a pass IMO. 180 deg. I might look at Davis and Wilhelm

If the Bills were planning to keep Ellison, Wilhelm would be a usable upgrade. He is an actual fit in the 3-4 and is a quality ST player. He had 12 ST tackles for the 49ers last year after being signed early in the season. He’s an upgrade across the board over Ellison to me.

Davis might also be worth a flier. I’d happily cut a guy like Coleman (and send him to the PS) to sign a guy like Davis who has the athleticism and size to be a factor as a pass rusher at OLB. He’s had a terrible career, but has showed some signs this preseason. Again, if Coleman was going to make the team, I might go this direction instead.

QBs

I think that if the distance between the play of Edwards and Fitz/Brohm were less than it is, that is, if Brohm and Fitz were a realistic challenge to Edwards’ job, then Brohm should be the number two guy. The good Brohm looks like he could move the team powerfully, maybe better than Trent, if he had to from time to time. Whereas the good Fitz just looks capable. But because they’re clearly a step behind Trent, I think Fitz makes more sense as the number two. Brohm is more of a risk because he’s less polished than Fitz. If he weren’t as generally worse than Edwards, he’s be a great number two. That’s an interesting way to put it, I know. I wish I knew how to explain that rationale better.

So Fitzpatrick will probably be the number two. He didn’t do anything to let Brohm by him, and Brohm hasn’t taken advantage of Fitz’s average play. But Brohm should make the team. He shouldn’t be cut just to put Levi Brown on the 53-man roster. If someone wants to take Levi off our practice squad, then as I see it, it’s really not that big of a deal.

I understand

Fitz is a true backup QB. Minimal mistakes and a quality holdover. Brohm has the ability to start but since hes inconsistent, if he makes spot starts its a better chance he does worse than Fitz.

Over a whole season I want Brohm, but for a mid game switch on an injury I want FItz. I can agree. Though I want the talent that could be a starter over a guy I know doesn’t have it. If our QB was Peyton Manning I would say Fitz is the easy choice, but until Trent Shows me hes a quality NFL starter. Brohm is needed for future growth

No o-line depth

The most striking thing about the Detroit game for me was the way the Detroit second- and third-string defenses outplayed our second- and third-string o-lines. Our starting line is pretty good (with the possible exception of RT), but after that we have just about nothing. Let’s pray that all the starters stay healthy for all 16 games this year. If they don’t, it’s not going to be pretty to watch.

I wasn't able to watch

by VanScottM on Sep 2, 2010 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

My impression is that Meredith will eventually be a far better RT than Cornell Green ever was, but he is still some time away from being a starter. That has been a surprise to me. I thought Meredith would show major improvement over last year and would easily be able to win the starting job from Green, but that hasn’t happened. So we have four pretty solid linemen in Bell, Levitre, Hangartner and Wood and an iffy RT in Meredith. Corderro Howard also looks like he has some talent, but he is still a very raw rookie. After that there’s almost nothing. Green strikes me as a very big FA mistake, and I am still dubious about Wang (who in any event will be of no help this year).

So four good to potentially very good starters, a RT in Meredith who could develop as the year goes along, and then zilch. As Denver says below let’ hope and pray that Gailey will be able to make adjustments if and when o-line injuries occur.

by Macktruck on Sep 3, 2010 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't forget, they have yet another O-Line coach right now, so I think were going to see some serious growing pains

Our line is playing a different style this year than it was last, so it could be ugly the first half, I just want us to come out of it at .500 myself.

abayarde- "I SAY this get ready cause the BUFFALO BILLS ARE COMING TO TOWN and I dont mean like Santa clause. WE will not Surrender this is were you all FALL The WHAGON BLASTER IS TAKING OFF AND YOU PUNKS are in our way, This wagon has no BREAKS so get ready for the ride of the life time"

Which takes me back

to the draft & FA period. Like I said then (re: the stacking players on top of players statement), you can stack garbage on top of garbage, it is still garbage.
Based on Chan’s postgame comments, I think he is planning on doing some serious waiver wire scanning for O-linemen. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this unit reduced to bare bones when the cuts come, & add 2-3 FA’s.

by billskk69 on Sep 3, 2010 7:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, that’s the answer to WABills fan’s post above. My own take is that the new o-line coach is much better than the last one and that that is helping things already as we head into the regular season. But ultimately it comes down to the talent you put on the field. I do not see our four main starters as “garbage” — on the contrary, I think they are very good, and Meredith also shows promise. The problem is what comes after that. We needed to do more stacking during the offseason. Perhaps we can find some good back-ups off the waiver wire this weekend, but of course those are all guys that are being cut after other teams decided on their 53-man rosters, which means they were rated as third-stringers at best.

by Macktruck on Sep 3, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not so sure. I think with Jamon we have acceptable depth at tackle. Losing a guard would be more painful. I think the key is, we can’t lose more than one guy at a time or its going to get really hairy in that pocket. I also have faith that Chan would adjust his play calling accordingly, depending on who we lost on the oline.

by Denver's Buffalo Fan on Sep 3, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Bell is looking like a solid starting LT, Meredith is shaky, Green is awful, and Wang is a year or two away from being a decent back-up. How is that “acceptable depth”?

by Macktruck on Sep 3, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

This has got to be the biggest worry for Chan right now, followed by a very close second by the lackluster LB play. I’m willing (& really hoping) to chalk that up as running a basic defense for preseason games. O-line – not so much. Other than maybe doing a few pulls here & there, O-line play is what it is, preseason or no. This unit is one or two injuries away from being average at best to horrendous.

by billskk69 on Sep 3, 2010 7:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Chan confirms what we are saying

In his press conference this a.m. Chan Gailey described the performance of the second-string o-line last night as “an awful display.” He clearly saw the same things that we did.

by Macktruck on Sep 3, 2010 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully that means they won't sit on their hands this weekend...

We need to add any quality OL depth we can find. Scrubs like Hennessey, Allen, Chambers and whoever just won’t cut it. We have Meredith and nothing at this point.

Trent has looked good…

One thing I noticed about Trent so far, is he is doing a MUCH BETTER Job of stepping up into the pocket and letting the outside pressure get rode past him. You didn’t see that much before this year, I thought he looked sharp tonight, as long as Levitre/Hang/Wood can hold their ground and give Trent a place to step up in the pocket, I think we will see marked improvement from Trent, looks like Chan has been working on this, from tonight.

I thought Brohm’s footwork was really solid last night. He did a great job of avoiding outside pressure. He only really got into trouble when the interior line gave way.

Marshawn

Is still very young. Fred is 29/30.

Keep Marshawn he’s going to be a good back for years and him and Spiller could be a fantastic Thunder/Lighting combo

Houston?

Freddy might get them to the playoffs. Seems a good fit to me for a future conditional draft pick.

now don't get me wrong.

I love fred, but he could be the one to get houston over the top for the playoffs and the shot at winning it all. And if he got them there, we might get a dp who will get us there next year.

my wish list.

I have no idea if chix will even try to get some new blood in at this point (my gut says no) BUT!!!!!
one thing that really impresses me about this preseason is that we look completly (better) different on offense and a quick look at the contracts shows that we are spending about 8-9 million less than last year. We are also about 5-6 million under last year on the defensive side of the ball. My point is the money is there to pick up a few veteran players from off the waiver wire.

TE Mabee they just rushed Foschi onto the field to quick, but that was bad no BAD I think we need a good #2 type TE someone who after learning the playbook could chalenge Schouman. Does anyone realy think he can make it all year without the dreaded IR. I will feel much better when Nelson is back, but by then if Schouman goes down it will be to late the better tallent will be gone. If we get someone better than Foschi now while Stupar, and Schouman are healthy we would have 4 weeks to evaluate who to keep between new TE and Schouman when Nelson comes back.

OT We need depth here. I dont see Hennesey making the team (PS). Wang is not ready even after he is healthy. That leaves Meredith, and Chambers. Considering Green has had his fair share of negative press, a starting quality RT that could over the first part of the season overtake Green, bumping him down to swing tackle with Meredith and cutting Chambers would help that problem out greatly.

OG Again we need depth. C. Howard, A. Ramsey, and T. Watkins does not inspire. I would think we could pick up a veteran back up OG pretty cheap, and stash some of the above mentioned on the (PS). Get one now, not in the middle of the season when we have no choice like last year after the injuries. Otherwise one of those three will make the team, and it will only cost us a PS spot and 1 million dollars.

OLB We need a pass rush, but if I could choose I would want a run stopping impact type player. With our DB we can live without a top notch pass rush for now. We will loose a lot of games if we dont stop the run. I know we have been without Tobor of late. who has been gettting his run down snaps? Surely we could find an upgrade here.

LB Coverage

Am I the only who’s more worried about our inability to cover TE and RB with linebackers? To me, this is a greater concern than the pass rush at this point. Perhaps I’m the only one, but I’ve been reasonably happy with the pass rush considering our blitz packages were vanilla. However, TEs and RBs seem to have a real easy time getting open in our defense. Perhaps that was more when the 2s and 3s were out there, but it seems like I remember it happening to our 1s plenty too.

by Denver's Buffalo Fan on Sep 3, 2010 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I completely share your worry, but it also seemed to me that Chris Ellis was making some very good plays in pass coverage tonight. Indeed, at one point Steve Tasker commented on how well Ellis was adapting to playing in space. I would never have predicted that was going to happen in a million years, but it seems to be true. And of course Bryan Scott can help out in covering TE’s and RB’s when he is in as a dime DB. So there’s some hope at least.

We looked very good during the first two quarters then in the second half, we seemed to lose the focus and intensity which helped us get ahead of the Lions. Brohm looked antsy and nervous for the most part which clearly negatively effected his play (errant passes at times among other things). Levi Brown has the makings of at the very least a very solid backup QB, but he’s clearly still a work in progress. That interception he threw which was returned for a TD was just an awful throw seeing that there were no Bills anywhere near where he threw the football.
Chad Jackson to me at least cemented himself as the fifth WR on the roster, as he played a very good game and displayed a great burst on several of his five catches. Donald Jones and Naaman Roosevelt both played very pedestrian dropping quite a few passes and not making much impact at all; Jones is a goner and Roosevelt is practice squad-material.
Chris Ellis had a solid game.

I would find it hard to believe he is going anywhere but the practice squad.

Clearly the receiver and the QB were not on the same page. We don’t know that wasn’t the receiver’s fault.

Looked like he threw it about 5 feet over the WR's head

But it was a bullet so I doubt it was supposed to be a jump ball pass. Maybe a quick out instead of a slant, but either way, the pass was bad….

My take

I have a feeling that Brian Brohm will be cut soon. He had 12 possessions this preseason to score a TD, and he failed to do that. And lets remember folks, Fitz had only 9 preseason possessions, and in that those possessions, he threw 2 TD passes, and got a running TD from Bell.

Anyway, I do like what I see out of the Bills first team offense. They definitely looked radically different than last season, scoring 41 points in 14 possessions. As for the defense, they look just as opportunistic as last season. I just hope they can do a better job in the regular season stopping the run. But overall, the team looked this preseason.

by Henry_Gale on Sep 3, 2010 7:15 AM EDT reply actions

I read somewhere if a veteren player is picked up off waivers before the first regular season game, the new team has to pay his previous contract. If the player is signed after the first game, then it can be negotiated. I hope the BILL’S find TE and OL help, but would be surprised if they sign someone before the Miami game.

Hmmmmm...

It looks like the offense is going to be entertaining this year but the defense is going to take most of the season to progress. As long as the defense plays hard and continues to improve is what we need to hope for. I’m positive that DC Edwards has some tricks up his sleeve for the opener!

One thing for sure is that no Buffalo lead will be safe this year…

Foschi

The strongest reaction I had to watching this game was thinking: “I can’t wait until Nelson gets back off of his suspension”. Foschi was brutal, not just on that interception but on pretty much any play he had a major role in.

How did he look? I didn’t get to see the game. I know there are a lot of downers on him, rightfully so I would say, but really want him to make some strides this year.

by BigTex_BillsFan on Sep 3, 2010 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

He’s coming along. Had a couple of pressures, was handled easily on many plays. Slow progress.

by Brian Galliford on Sep 3, 2010 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions

yes – but I saw some noticeable improvement – it’ll be a slow progress for him for sure – but he’s working at it and has the work ethic. we knew he was raw – i’m hopeful that next year we’ll have quite the pass rusher on our team

I'm not sure we have the tools or the talent....

Was it his fault on the INT or did the WR run the wrong route?
