Game Notes from Green Bay
I finally got around to watching this game yesterday, and I took some notes.
- The highlight of the game, for me, was definitely Randy Cross trying to explain "hidden yards." If you don't remember, he began by saying "Hidden yards are really simple to explain," and then basically muttering incoherently for about 30-45 seconds and then finally giving up. Attaboy Randy.
- Watching Marshawn Lynch, he can absolutely still be a feature back in the NFL. He'd be a great fit on the Packers.
- The "Kuuuuuu--hhhhhhnnnn" chant that happens whenever John Kuhn touches the ball is great.
- Chan's gameplans really seem like they lack subtlety, don't they?
- Whitner is not as complicated as I've always thought he was. The reality is that he looks good against bad and below average players, but against good players he gets lit up. There's a word for that: average.
- Aaron Rodgers has a silo at his house where he keeps all his extra pocket presence. The man felt every blitz and pressure Buffalo had.
- What is Torell Troup doing on the kick return team/ Is that the most terrifying image ever?
- This was the matchup from hell for Trent. You literally couldn't have scripted a game that would show him in a worse light. Watching Aaron Rodgers constantly moving and making plays, having Clay Matthews sitting on the back of his helmet every two or three plays...
- I don't understand why anyone ever runs the prevent against Trent. Also, it's not hard to understand why he succeeds against it: it's designed to stop the one thing he never attempts to do. That'd be like if we had 8 in the box the whole game against rodgers.
- How is this the 1st time I'm hearing about this 300 yard game streak? It's shocking.
- Spiller should return every kickoff from here on out. With three guys who need touches, we've got to get him the ball on special teams.
- I hope that Trent running out of bounds instead of taking a chance on 4th down is the last play he ever runs as a Bill. What a fitting ending to a horrendous career in Buffalo.
- The Packers put that the "you need a power running game to win in the cold" myth to rest. For that matter, so do the Pats. We should build our team exactly how they did. Get your QB, then go find passrushers. A great quarterback and a rabid passrush is going to end up near 10 wins even if everything else goes wrong.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Did you notice the Maybin "pirouette" rush/dance?
Watching games with you is way better than solo. We can keep the other from killing himself. At least Vandy beat Ole Miss on the road.
prediction for 2010 season is 3 and 13
Ole Miss's D is embarrassing.
The touchdowns were all runs up the middle where a guy went 20-80 yards untouched. At least we don’t have to watch that on sundays yet.

I agree but you make it sound easy. You cant just find a great QB. You have to find a superstar. Many teams try, few succeed. Peyton Manning and the Colts invented the idea last decade. They have the greatest QB of this era, maybe ever. They’ve never given him an offensive line, they haven’t given him a ground game since Edgerrin James left, they dont have linebackers, they dont have a secondary. They just keep plugging in good receivers and then just let Freeney and Mathis terrorize opposing QBs trying to keep up with Peyton.
Its really hard to find a QB good enough to build that kind of team around. Its sure easier to build a team around a super star QB but its definitely a lot less likely to happen to your team. The better route is to put in the elbow grease, the years, and the patience into building an offensive line, a defensive line, finding a stout runner and some good LBs and corners and then finding a good leader under center and a great weapon or two for him to use. Through it all keep taking shots at QBs and hope one is a superstar. Then you can go the easy route if you luckily land one or just keep plugging away at building a foundation.

I’m not even convinced all the receivers are good on their own, but with Peyton passing it doesn’t matter.

Obviously you’re right. It’s not easy.

See, at the end of all this, you still need a superstar quarterback to win championships. I agree with what you said, you shouldn’t completely ignore the rest of the team obviously, but you still need a star quarterback.

I dont think you need a star, just a great leader and player. Guys who have been to recent Super Bowls include Eli Manning, Matt Hasselbeck, Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman, Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Kerry Collins, Chris Chandler.
I guess, though, just noticed you said “championships”. To which I would agree, your right ,if you want to win multiple titles, and stay in contention you do need a superstar QB.

yep yep

I want a dynasty. You’re right that you can win a title with just an okay QB, but you can’t do what the Colts or Pats do and be the best teams in the league for a sustained period of time without a great qb.

Building a Dynasty
Can only happen by building through the draft and making good draft choices. I’m sorry, and I may not have much of a right as a non-Bills fan, but this is where my criticism of Chan Gailey comes in. You need to win games in the trenches, that begins with the OL. The LT is the most important position on the line. If you give your QB time, he will have better odds to succeed, develop, and improve….thus creating a Superstar QB. The weapons follow, but build from within first.
Bill Belichek built the Patriots exclusively through the draft in the early 00’s. Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and even Green Bay now build exclusively through the draft. I know Buffalo has been very good with that in recent years excluding the TO signing. Now it comes down to making good draft choices, having direction, and getting your franchise players.
Runningbacks don’t last long in the NFL. That’s a fact. They don’t last as long as QB’s and Offensive Linemen. So why does Buffalo have 3 starting RB’s on the roster? What does the team gain from that? By the time the other positions are finally situated, these guys will be long gone. In this previous draft…..LT Anthony Smith wasn’t your guy, move on. Bryan Bulaga isn’t the guy, move on. We don’t need an OG in Iupati, move on. QB Jimmy Claussen will not succeed in the NFL, move on. So what do you do? TRADE DOWN! If your guy isn’t on the board, trade down. Get what you can. Don’t draft a player that won’t help your team this year, next year, or the next several years. CJ Spiller may be dynamic, but the Bills should have addressed other positions before adding a dynamic RB.

There's a rule within One Bills Drive office
that says the Bills are not allowed to trade down. Ralph Wilson thinks it’s bad omen to his business in — in business he likes everything to go up (like stocks) so the Bills can only trade up and not down.

If all the stars align, pigs learn to fly, humanity achieves world peace, doctors discover a cure for cancer, scientists perfect cold fusion, and hell freezes over, the Bills might win the SB this year.

Hahaha yes. When I was listening to that, it seemed like he had no clue how to explain it… just kept rambling on. I think he said “hidden yardage” about 5 times during that minute or so rant…
And completely agree with your hopeful last play for Trent… “And he didnt even try.” was how they explained that last play. I mean… how do you not at least throw one up? My god… hes so tough to watch.
