Bill Simmons thinks Bills fans are "in denial" about QB Trent Edwards. So... are Bills fans in denial about QB Trent Edwards?

Cuteness personified

This is another so-called sports writer who prides himself on being cuter than anyone else. Ok, he’s very cute, but that’s not meant as a compliment.

super cute, but the rant about a Bills fan sucker punching a guy in a Sanchez jersey was spot on in that it accurately described the the crowd of 150 cheering Bills fans that would amass at such a scene.

I read this yesterday.

I think he misinterprets the notion that “he could be good with some blocking” as denial. He thinks we see Trent as a good quarterback. As far as I go, I see Trent as a slightly below average NFL QB if he had decent blocking. There is no scenario where I see him being good. As I’ve said a zillion times on here, it’s my contention that very good quartbacks don’t need blocking.

Remember the market he's playing to

National sports writers need to suck up to the larger markets in order to maintain a larger audience. People like Simmons lose nothing by being dismissive of small markets even if it means fabricating stories out of whole cloth in order to do so.

Nothing to read in that article. Trent and Chan have their work cut out for them. The only response would to be let his play speak for its self. If holding out hope that Trent gets better is “in denial” so be it! I’m in denial…..

This is why I’m disgusted by what passes for sports writing these days – long live the bloggers!

I didn’t get ONE PIECE OF INFORMATION FROM THAT SNIPPET ON EDWARDS. I think I’m young enough for the education I received throughout my life to still be part of a normal curriculum at all levels. Aren’t we taught that if your going to make a claim you should provide the facts to back it up? This guy just knocks a teams starting QB as the third worst in the league and only offers a made up quote that imaginary Bills fans have said about Edwards to ridicule a fan base.

Look, Edwards has few fans around the league but all these clowns who are putting him down now were the same guys putting his face on the cover of the ESPN power rankings and Sports Illustrated when we started 5-1.

Im in denial that Bills Simmons just wrote a paragraph on Trent Edwards that was almost entirely about The Bachelor. Hes trying to write about football and somehow admits he watches the Bachelor??

There’s your problem. He writes about Vegas and gambling and his fantasy baseball teams and the NBA and about every reality TV show every recorded. That’s the type of “info” you should expect from him.

We might be in denial

but I don’t think so. Trent is not so bad, he is just not so good.

I thought it was quite a good article and the quote beolw did make me think of a couple of people on here. :-)

Throw in his marquee value and I believe Jacksonville fans and Buffalo fans will be very bitter by December. Of course, at least one Buffalo fan just read that and said: “Wait a second, I’m bitter every December. Are you saying I’m going to be more bitter than usual? Last December I sucker-punched a Jets fan outside Ralph Wilson Stadium just because he seemed a little too proud of his Sanchez jersey, then I ripped off the jersey and repeatedly drove over it with my snowplow as 150 Buffalo fans cheered me on. I’m going to be more bitter than that?” Yes.

We’ll see, I guess. I would say I am hopeful. But truly, last year would have been terrible for any QB – offensive line inexperienced and mostly injured, first year offensive coordinator and the horrendously bad idea of going with a no-huddle when no one running it has enough experience. Plus the head coach was bad and made no in-game adjustments.

That’s a lot of things to overcome. So this year I think we’ll finally know about Trent Edwards and I am hopeful that he’ll play better. That’s not denial.

absolutely we are not in denial about Edwards. I havent heard one person on here proclaiming that Edwards is suddenly going to become an All-Pro. I think most of us would agree that all we want is some positive consistency in his health and performance on the field.

He is simply doing what all of us do on a daily basis and that is be “homers” and take any opportunity we can to get a few knocks on our divisional opponents. The difference is that he is nationally syndicated on ESPN and we are not.

whats up with the potshot?

I dont think I’ve come across as enraged. In fact if you read my comment above I’m more shocked and dismayed that an ESPN sports writer referenced The Bachelor for an entire paragraph when discussing Trent Edwards.

No I did not read the rest of his article, didn’t seem worth it. ESPN claims to be " the world wide leader in sports" you’ll have to excuse me for expecting that to mean they’d be looking to hire contributors with expertise in sports.

by poz on Sep 3, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I apologize for the potshot, if thats how you perceived it.

My whole argument is based upon the fact that Bill Simmons has been writing for ESPN for atleast 10 years now…….we know his shtick…….atleast if you’re been reading him any length of time. He always incorporates “pop-culture” items in his writing…because it gives casual readers something to relate to. THAT his audience……..I would venture to guess

People get so P’O’ed at the guy, yet every week they read what he has to say…….then get P’O’ed again when he bashes their team. He bashes his own too….He’s a fan, he’s gets ticked off just like we all do.

Brian’s point to his post is that he knows true Bills fans arent in denial about Edwards………..

As I stated earlier there is a friend of his who works with him who is a Bills fan……Thats my guess as to where he got the whole Denial thing from.

Sure we all wish ESPN writers would do their due process on all 32 teams….but come on now……realistically its just not possible.

Yet here people are bashing Simmons for giving his opinion…….which is what he’s paid a good deal amount to do………..yet I would venture to guess they will all read his next column…….Why is that?

Because its entertaining.

I had never read Bill Simmons

before but was aware of the name and persona. I assumed he was a big name sports writer – which he seems to be. I guess that’s my fault for assuming or not being informed on the author but like I said, I naturally assume a big name ESPN contributor to be an actual expert in sports.

Based on what your saying it seems like Bill Simmons isn’t an expert on anything sports related and if he is, waters down everything he says to the point of being irrelevant to anyone actually looking to read about sports. A football fan certainly didnt gain any knowledge about Trent Edwards from that list.

If you know what to expect...

…I can’t really get bent out of shape either. When talking about national sports reporters and a Buffalo team you always have to bear certain things in mind:

1) The article will be poorly researched, if indeed it was researched at all and will often contain “facts” that can be easily refuted with a ten-second websearch.
2) The article will be based on presumptions that are either no longer accurate or never were accurate to begin with.
3) The article will always be dismissive of Buffalo players as compared to large-market players of comparable statistical qualifications. Even if a Buffalo player does something unprecedented and unique, it will be either completely dismissed by the national media (see: Fred Jackson) or shunted aside in favor of “more prominent” (read: large market) star players (see: Ryan Miller).
4) The article will present Buffalo as a place that no player want to play in or be traded to.
5) The article will speculate on where a good player on a Buffalo team will go to once his contract runs out, as he obviously would never want to stay there.
6) The article will openly question why the league bothers keeping a team in Buffalo at all, regardless of fan support/attendance figures. Buffalo attendance will often be claimed to be lacking when the exact opposite is true (see: Bills attendance 2007-2009)
7) The article will always imply that a Buffalo team will be ecstatic to jump on large-market players who have repeatedly proven themselves worthless even if that player would not be a good fit on the club (see: Matt Leinart).

Once you understand that all national sportswriters are required to follow one or more of these guidelines when writing about the Bills or Sabres, it will be a lot easier to read articles regarding Buffalo teams written by people who neither care nor can be bothered to take the time to find out what is really going on here.

I think its crazy how many people “hate” Simmons but read him week after week. Sure the guy makes broad generalizations and has an annoying bias to Boston sports, but he’s funny and comes off pretty humble for someone who’s column is read by millions of people. There’s a lot worse "sports columnists/talking heads at ESPN (see Bayless, Skip) who offer absolutely nothing to journalism or sports commentary. If I remember correctly, Simmons mentioned how much he respected Bills fans passion in a column last year too. Not saying the guy is brilliant or that he’s the best sports writer ever, but he’s a nice break from the really over the top opinions at ESPN. Did I mention I can’t stand Skip Bayless?

Right now the bills are a bit of a laughing stock, and that sucks. But he does his job. I don’t think he actually thinks or purports himself as an expert, more like a fan reporting what he perceives. The only way to shut people like him up is to play and win, which hopefully TE will do.

Oh and another thing, BS unlike some other writers will call himself out when he is blatantly wrong, so he’s not that bad of a writer, and hopefully TE can make him make fun of himself…..

Bad article for a couple of reasons

1. How are “Bills fans” (assuming the premise is correct) delusional here? The Bills offensive line was terrible last season. They gave up 46 sacks and allowed 103 hits on the QB. I believe apart of Edwards’ problem last season was poor pass protection.

2. Trent Edwards went out of flavor in the eyes of Bills Nation in 2009. Doesn’t Bill Simmons know that some Bills fans labeled him “Captain Checkdown.”

Simply:

That’s what he means. The rest of the league’s perception is that Trent is a dud.

In reading through the comments, I think maybe one or two people actually answered the question I posed. The rest just ripped Simmons. And I think that makes Bill right.

Well then, I’ll answer your question from this Bills fan’s perspective. I don’t think Bills fans are “in denial” so much as the national sports media doesn’t seem to realize or admit that Edwards’ circumstances have changed and it’s tough to draw conclusions for his future performance. He could lose his confidence after the first sack of the season and suck as much as most sports writers are predicting. If he stays healthy, he could flourish under Gailey, though I don’t think I’ve seen a single article detailing that scenario. The thing to me is that very few writers seems to admit that he could have a 2009 Kyle Orton type of season where he shows he was in a bad situation in previous years and doesn’t necessarily light the world on fire but does more to help the team rather than hurt it.

Funny

I enjoyed the artical as a satirical column along the lines of writer Dave Barry. I didn’t take as anything more than a attempt at humor.

As for Trent he now has a chance with Chan as his mentor but I see him as a QB that will play it safe and doesn’t have the extra gear to get to the next level. He will do things well but be unspectacular such as a Pennington, Orton, Cassel, Garrard etc…

I'll answer the question

Brian,

TE certainly has the physical gifts (arm strength, size, mobility, quick release, ability to make all the NFL throws) to be a good starter, but at the moment, lacks the mental capabilities. All too often Edwards flops whenever he faces off against tough competition. Grant it, he did look good against the Skins in 2007, the Bolts in 2008, and the Pats in 2009, but in the overall picture, typically chokes against teams which finished the season above .500 or made it into the playoffs.

So can Edwards develop into a good NFL QB? Yes. He just needs to learn from his mistakes of the past, and hopefully with the help of Chan Gailey, can overcome his shortcomings.

My question to Simmons is why don’t you believe he can do it? TE only has 30 starts under his belt, and will be entering into his fourth season next week. Good QBs don’t blossom overnight. It generally takes time, and that maturity stage typically depends on the system.
