Roster cuts to be aware of

Here is a rundown of players I feel the Bills should at least take a look at that have been cut from their teams so far. If you feel someone else, or hear of someone else worth mentioning, please don't hesitate to add them into the comments, and I will do my best to update the list as I can. If the player(s) listed are taken up by another team, I will mark them as such. All data is being drawn from the usual suspects of profootballtalk.com and rotoworld.com, player bio info is from espn.com.

Star-divide

TE Anthony Becht, former first rounder, has played in all games his 10 year career, and started all but 2. About as solid a player at the position, good to great (when on a roll) blocker, decent receiver. I would prefer him on a short to long term replacement basis to Schouman, especially if Schou's injury will keep him out another 4+ weeks, we need SOMETHING better than Foschi as the #2 TE while Nelson is out on suspension.

LB Monty Beisel, 10 year vet, very much like Andra Davis, and if your like me, wincing at the thought of Mitchell being the only experienced depth we have, he might be the solution your looking for. Not a spectacular player, but solid enough to be the #4 LBer for a team, who won't kill you, but isn't exactly going to wow you either.

WR TJ Houshmandzadeh * The Houshinator has been signed by the Vikings, all Fantasy players with Farve now need to rush to sign him* Need player? Perhaps, a far better option than say Hardy (if he is somehow being kept, doubt it myself...). Do you think the team needs a better vet playing across from Evans? Maybe, I think so personally. The issue with Housh is simple, do we sacrifice any young WR to make room for him, and how much can he help us? We need to asses the situation here not like Madden players, and more like a chem professor trying to figure out how combustible the roster is. I think he could help, but the question is, what price do we pay for him in young talent? Also, there is the chance that the Seahawks may NOT cut him and swing a trade, they do have till lunchtime today.

C/G Nick Leckey Just released by the Saints he was their top interior backup till losing his job this summer. Has been in the league for 7 years, so knows his way around a NFL team and playbook. May be better a choice than our current crop of interior possibilities.

OLB Cody Brown Former 2nd round pick from UConn, was having serious issues converting to OLB for them. May be a fit for us this season as we will be running serious amounts of 4 down lineman this season as we transition. He showed good ability as a college rusher, but was deemed too small to play on the line. Hard to say if he has a future in the NFL, but Elvis Dumervil is not much larger than Brown is and has thrived. I feel he would be worth checking out myself.

OLBs Ricky Foley/Stevie Baggs Both men tied for the CFL lead in sacks last season, and decided to test the waters here in the NFL. Both have been cut, but both know how to get to a QB, and while both are considered undersized in the NFL, as situational players they could be very useful. I would at least check them out, if nothing else, they at least know what a sack is unlike many of our current OLBs do.

C Jason Spitz *Packers have opted to retain him, and no longer taking trade offers and will not release him* Big boy interior lineman who can play either guard or the center position. A 2006 3rd rounder he is still on the roster right now, but word is the Packers may be looking to trade, and then release him if no suitors call. Before missing 11 games last season he was considered the Packers best interior backup, and was being looked at as a possible starting challenger.

FB Jason Davis One of the stars of Hard Knocks this year, and also a good blocker as well. This is more of the fact that I have not been a fan of McIntyre the past couple of seasons. This more than any other player listed is one of those grass is greener thoughts.

OTs Jon Jansen and Adam Terry- Both are big guys, and both have been LTs. Injuries have derailed them both the past season(s), they maybe at the end of the line. BUT, compared to what we have backing up our OTs, I think they are worth looking at, especially if they are able to out play Green. These are two guys who if they have anything in the tank can start rather than backup at the RT spot.

OLB Alex Hall Solid player, only in his third year in the league, he is considered a better OLB than DE in the NFL, has some speed, did get three sacks for the Browns in 2008, none last year, but played in 30 of 32 games, so he is durable. Cards and Pats are showing interest in him.

Poll
Should the Bills make any further roster additions/subtractions beyond what Brian speculated earlier today?
Yes, oh good football lords above, we need newer (hopefully better) bodies in here!

No, what Brian posits as our final roster works more than well enough for me

Right now, no real quality players are being cut from those areas. We'll see who shows up later this morning.

My issue is I would prefer on the interior to have a real veteran playing there rather than some UDFAs myself.

But of course! Wood and Levitre are solid, and Hang has been serviceable so far this season, compared to our old buddies

Puke and Fowler, were ahead of the game. I think someone like Spitz though who was a player once thought of capable of challenging for a starting job would not be a bad addition to this team in place of someone like Hennesey (I always screw up his name, how about we just call him Cognac?).

Starters yes

Depth, no. I’m way more comfortable with Chambers, Meredith, and even Wang, than Allen, Hennessey, and Howard.

I don't disagree, I think all due diligence needs to be done, the question is whether or not there is a trade war for him

As I noted, the Seahawks still hold his rights currently, but will probably cut him this afternoon if they can’t get a taker, the issue is that several other desperate teams must be looking at him hard too. If it was a money bid thing if he was already on the open market, I would just chuck the cash at him and go from there. Picks though are a tad bit more precious for us right now….

He's a chump

Don’t need the headache of a “me guy”. The fact that Seattle wants to let him go after one year should raise red flags.

4get Housh

He will probably wind up with a team a little farther a long than the Bills are right now. Minnesota comes to mind. Besides he doesn’t seem to fit with the Nix/Gailey youth movement.

by phaze1 on Sep 4, 2010 4:07 AM EDT reply actions

Minnesota

That seems like a good fit for him.

The Javon Walker signing just reeked of desperation until Rice comes back. Javon was great until the major injury, some just don’t come back from it the same, it hurts much more at speed positions like WR and RB, look at Cowart, he was a LB, but never the same again, it took away from him what made him great, even though he was a LB, he was faster than the competition, before the injury..

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

I have Housh on my BRPL team and would be ecstatic if he went to the Vikings where my QB Brett Favre is in residence.

I’ve never even heard of Betch until now.Spitz would be my number one out of that list. I don’t like the idea of moving Wood around too much.

i would consider Anthony Becht right now. He played well with the Jets at one time, Don’t know if he lost or step, but he would be at very least be worth bringing him in for a look.

raw outside linebacker who’s a lock for the 49er’s PS. I’d be happy if we had him but he’s not unlike maybin – just as inconsistent with less talent and potential. Has a more natural feel for run defense though.

The Vikes have already declared that they don’t want him. Same thing for the Jets. But the Steelers are now in discussions for a Vince Jackson trade, so if that breaks down they could be a suitor. Meanwhile the Raiders are always looking for more talent and the Redskins really need someone opposite Satana Moss that is not named Mike Williams.

Jansen, a veteran of 11 NFL seasons with the Lions and Washington Redskins, has played in 137 career games.

Jansen was drafted by the Redskins in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft.

He would give the Bills great depth!

He’s only 24 and started 12 games for them last year. He’s got upside still and would make an excellent short, and potential longer term third Guard.

Hartwig (G/C) was released by the Steelers; while his contract prevented trading for him, picking him up should be a significant upgrade over the Bills OL backups.

I agree

didn’t he start for the steelers last year, I would bring him in. I look at our roster as good news and bad news.
Bad news: There is no way there isn’t a better OL or LB out there who isn’t better than our lowest depth.
Good news: See above

Russ Ohlenberger OG Patriots

Terrance Metcalf OG Saints
Chase Coffman TE Bengals
WR Freddie Barnes Bears
QB Troy Smith

Theirs 5 offensive guys I wouldn’t be adverse to taking a look at.

On defense I’d look at
Pierre Woods LB Patriots
Junior Siavii DE Cowboys
Al Woods DT Saints

Those are a few DE’s I wouldn’t hate looking at.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

I’d take in a heartbeat. Unlike Jansen who is a pure RT only, Terry has played both sides and as its obvious to me we’ll need to look again at both OT positions next year, Terry is potentially better than what we have on the roster to hold down one side for 2-3 years
