NFL Roster Cuts: Bills Trim Roster To 53 Players
The Buffalo Bills have added 20 names to Saturday's massive NFL cut list, finalizing their 53-man roster in doing so. The list of Bills players let go today is below; if there's a star next to the name, that player has NFL practice squad eligibility (source). After the jump, you can find Buffalo's (tentative) final roster in depth chart form, and also broken down by position.
Tight end Shawn Nelson will be placed on Reserve/Suspended, while strong safety Jon Corto will start the year on the PUP list. Keep in mind, also, that the Bills might not be done wheeling and dealing.

i was hoping both Jones and Bell would be cut and we’d get a free agent pickup to fill in depth elsewhere.

Hey Brian, is the bottom list the actual roster breakdown, or just who was on the roster prior to final cutdown?
I think we see Brown and Bell make the PS, though Bell has a chance of being snatched by another team. With the numbers of O-lineman, do you think the Bills pursue someone like Jansen or Spitz to fill in?

True, good point since Schouman got injure/waived though they might have him on speed dial
So once he is healthy he could be brought back, he does know the playbook

I think Schouman will be getting a call when healthy, but no sooner than week 2. Schouman has shown he has the skill to be a solid NFL tight end, but has also an injury magnet.

Need help!
Hope the front office is scouring the waiver wire for even respectable backup O-linemen. Slightly surprised at the number of LB’s and secondary kept. There’s a little flexibility there if an opportunity to get a little depth at O-line pops up.
Wait until everyone has made their cuts.
Like the article on BB.com says the front office is looking over the other cuts. My bet is that we sign at least 2 more on the line (1 OT and one G/C) as well as 1 TE and maybe an OLB if any of value have been cut.

About the only thing I saw on the wire.
Was Justin Hartwig getting cut from Pittsburgh, he would be a good back up C if we could sign him.
There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Wow
Kept 10 LBs and 6 S…
I have to think that the Bills are hoping to snatch some OL/TE from other teams as they are released
That was my thought.
Especially since they have 5 CB’s as well.
I am surprised they kept both David Nelson and Donald Jones. I would have thought they would have kept one of the more experienced receivers (Hardy/Jackson). It is an inexperienced group and should be interesting.
But
I think Scott counts as a Nickel backer. And I won’t be surprised if one of the safeties go when we pick up some depth at OL and TE.

then no one else can have them. What if our team was all CBs and safeties? It might just work.

I like the new shakeup of the WR’s – we’ll finally get to see S.Johnson and what he can do. My guess is some of us will be clamoring for D.Nelson to start taking WR#2 snaps.
I like the DE position as well really
I'm not sure we have the tools or the talent....
I’m kind of surprised they cut Jackson — he looked good to me throughout the preseason… had a good repetoire with the backups and probably could have had the same with Edwards.

Questions
The Bills list Dominique Harris as a corner, but I thought he was a safety. Which is correct? I only remember him forcing that fumble in the Colts game and I think he wss playing safety, but i could be wrong…good call on the 10 linebackers (seems excessive to me since I only like 3 of them)…Buffalo’s PR department stated on the web site that the Bills will probably look to the waiver wire to upgrade the roster in some capacity. WR and OL?

Couple surprises for me
6 safeties? I think that’s something for the future, eg: both Harris’ shelf life is until the Bills can find better OL depth/Nelson’s return from suspension.
Donald Jones over Chad Jackson? Didn’t expect Jones to make the roster.

Ditto about Jackson
I thought Chad had a very good camp and showed up in the games too.
He must not have had performed as well on teams though. As bad as they were for the first 3 games though, I can live with the decision IF that’s why it was made.

Fun Fact
Royal Tennis is way cooler than regular tennis.
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Literally no depth on offense
8 OL is a shock, especially with a sore Wang, but not really a big shock. There weren’t exactly any guys were keeping. I can almost guarantee they’ll be looking all over for some depth this weekend. I’ve got my eye on Donald Thomas cut by Miami and Kraig Urbik by the Steelers.
I don’t really understand keeping 6 safeties, especially Cary Harris. Guess that’s due to Byrd’s injury and I suppose their ST prowess. At least that’s all I can think of. I bet a Harris is the first to go if we add someone else.
Surprised Jones made it over Jackson. What exactly has he shown this preseason? He’s just mediocre across the board, while Jackson at least possesses big play ability. I also thought Jackson had a better camp. I would have kept him and sent Jones to the PS, since it was highly unlikely he was going to be picked up elsewhere. Oh well.
I think I’m most shocked by Ellison. What does he give this team? I think this is a sign we’ll be playing a lot of 4-3…

There are sure to be veteran backs teams will look at before him. Chad Simpson comes to mind. Maybe Willie Parker, etc. Would love him to be on the PS.
Agree
Everyone keeps saying Bell will get picked up off waivers, but I’m not so convinced of that. He did great during pre-season, buut that doesn’t guarantee anyone will take him off waivers. We could very likely see him clear waivers and make the PS.
Don’t be so surprised, the Chargers were good at finding UDFA’s for their depth too. Not many of them stuck around, but it was definitely a trend for them. I’m guessing that we now know who was behind that trend.

Yikes. 8 OLs, one of whom currently has one hand. Two of the reserves are OTs so there’s exactly one guy to back up the three middle positions. I scanned the lists of cuts from other teams and not much really jumped out at me. I do seem to recall that some people were interested in center A Q Shipley—he’s now available.
Who gets cut when Nelson comes off of the suspended list? Who gets cut when Corto comes off of the PUP list?
It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.
Actually Ron...
an offensive lineman with a taped hand isn’t that big of a deal, as opposed to a skills player. Much less of a chance of being called for holding. LOL!
I expect Corto to practice for three weeks after that and then get cut.

Bingo. My guess is that the bills hold onto him for as long as possible and would only cut him if he was unable to return to the field, a la John DiGiorgio. Corto might not offer much on the D, but he’s one of the league’s best STers. Whenever possible, you find a roster spot for a guy like that.

Did anyone catch that Denver sent CB Alphonso Smith to Detroit for a back-up TE?
Wow. What is Denver doing?
So, to recap: Denver trades a 2010 first round pick to Seatlle for their 2009 second round pick, where they draft Smith. That first round pick ended up being the 14th overall pick.
So, in essense, Denver traded the 2010 14th overall pick for a back-up TE. Everyone wanted to jump onto the Denver bandwagon on draft day, lauding them for “knowing how the draft works” after looking at how they used multiple trades to reposition themselves.
Color me unimpressed. Guys like Belichick and McDaniel jump all over the draft. What do they have to show for it recently? Really puts Nix’s comment about not knowing “how they can assess players while moving around” in a different light.

53 man roster
I like that they cleaned out the dead wood from the offensive line and cutsome guys that they can recall and trade." WE NEED A Left Tackle and another tight end." Donald Jones and the harris boys were kept because the were aggressive on special teams.Heres Namin lands on his feet.
I feel bad for Bell, Jackson

Sensible, but lack of o-line depth shocking
All of the decisions make good sense, but the roster exposes how incredibly lacking in depth we are at all the o-line positions. Let’s hope the waiver wire repairs that quickly.

He must be good at gunner cause as a reciever i think he is inferior to both Naaman and Jackson.
For maybe the fifth year in a row, I was three players off on my roster projection. Super annoying. Every year I try to get it down to 2, every year I fail by one. If only I’d put Howard over Hennessey; classic over-think. SOB.

I actually hope Bell makes someone’s active roster. He very well may have enough to make it in the NFL. We all were super excited about his play, but that was against backups. So we don’t know if he would continue the production. I have a feeling he could, but the Bills might think he’s worth the PS risk.

I can’t see the Bills taking his pricetag. This year he’s somewhat affordable but it jumps up big next year. He does have some good potential, and he actually had a better pre-season than Anderson. I just think bringing him in would cause too much drama. You think there will be QB controversy if Edwards slips up at all with Fitz and Brohm? Leinart would probably force the controversy even with Edwards playing well.

Something's got to be wrong with that guy
if Seattle cut him. Seattle isn’t any better off than Buffalo at WR IMO. If anything, I think they are worse. I think that guy got his payday & lost the fire. I can remember once upon a time he was battling just to make Cincy’s roster. He made it all the way up to #2, had a couple big years, & poof. Gone.
he lead the team in receptions last year
i believe,.. its not exactly poof hes gone, unless you mean, proof hes gone, hes not on the team..
True
Which is why I don’t get cutting your leading receiver. A good analogy would be the Bills cutting Lee Evans (except Evans can be a legit #1 in the right circumstance). I guess my point is that even being the leading receiver on a crappy receiving squad, he still appears to be a shadow of his former self as a Bengal. I see the same thing happening to him that happened to Peerless Price when he left Buffalo to be the #1 in Atlanta. That’s all I meant. If he resigns somewhere where he is in a similar situation as he was in Cincy, then maybe he can resurrect his career. He’s just not a #1 receiver like he thinks he is.
I also agree with NHBillzFan’s statement below. However, many consider Hasselbeck to be an elite QB. I certainly don’t and never have. Maybe if he could stay healthy, but when has that ever happened?
Owens led the team in receptions and yards last season. He’s gone. Most say he’s done. If they didn’t keep Owens, who can still bring it, why would they bring in Houshmanzadeh?

Needs
I keep seeing everyone talk about possible upgrades off the waiver wire—QB, WR, and might even consider TE since Nelson gets back Week 4. There are some players who’ve been dropped that may be legitimate upgrades based on skill. But we’re a week from watching the Bills slap the fish and the start of the regular season. I think the big consideration needs to be could these “upgrades” step in with such little lime left to prepare to contribute? Instead, I’d focus on needs. The Bills NEED some depth at OL. I’m liking Urbik with his flexibility to play both sides on guard and center. I’m also thinking Forney could be a nice pickup who would give some good depth and provide the young line some veteran leadership.
