Report: Bills Cut Rookie QB Levi Brown
Citing a league source, Aaron Wilson is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have cut rookie quarterback Levi Brown.
This news, if accurate, means that both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm have made the roster as backups to starter Trent Edwards.
Brown had an erratic preseason, but Bills head coach Chan Gailey remains high on his potential. He is a lock for the team's practice squad barring another team swooping in and putting him on their 53-man roster.

Not a huge surprise
I know others will be shocked, but it makes sense since Brohm looked decent enough during the summer. Unless some team wants Brown for their 53 man roster, he’ll be a good PS addition for the Bills. It’d be a step back in his development if he went to another team’s PS…

agreed
I thought Brohm almost showed enough against the Lions to take the backup job from Fitz. I like how he was scrambling and making sharp throws almost in response to the fact that everyone was lauding Fitz for his hustle and moxie. It was a bit of anything you can do I can do better from Brohm and I think that competitive fire helps his cause.

I was wondering if Gailey asked Brohm to show him what his legs could do. That line was a mess, but he was a very determined runner in that game.

Smart move?
This could be a smart move if Levi clears waivers. Given the fact that Bills QB’s tend to drop like flies given the protection they get, it is a sound insurance policy to have 3 of them on the roster would can be plausible starters if needed. Levi may have great potential, but at this point he is so raw and inconsistent (i.e., his awful pick at the end of the Lions game) that it is likely no other team will pick him up. But it is a gamble . . . .
Interesting
Maybe Green Bay will snag him in retribution for the Bills stealing Brohm…
It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.
im sure GB looks upon our QB situation and weeps with regret.
CJ Spiller: CJ stands for Chris Johnson.
Was expected. He need some time on the Practise Squad before he's NFL ready.
And I kind of like keeping all 4 of our QB’s in some capacity.

thats if brown clears waivers and no team snags him off our PS mid season like we did with brohm. seems like a strange risk to take just to keep brohm as a third stringer to me
Remember that once he is on the PS the Bills can always keep him by offering him a spot on the regular roster if another team tries to get him. And that other team would also have to offer him a 53-man roster spot, not one on the PS.
It’s also very likely that Brown gets promoted during the season. The injury bug is still part of the team.

But why would he agree to come up to the Bills when he knows he would be 4th on the depth chart? If he goes to another team the worst he’d be is 3rd.

Not Surprised
Seeing how Nix had a hand in acquiring Brohm I’m not surprised.

????
Can he refuse to go to another teams PS? Or is he a free agent and if 2 teams wanted him he has his choice?

It’s his choice, but if you’re in his shoes isn’t Buffalo a good spot?
They drafted you, you know the playbook, there’s no established long-term QB, and Gailey’s a good offensive coach.
The only reason to leave is if another team wants him on the active squad, which I think is unlikely. And if that happens the Bills can sign him and cut the 53rd player.
by Pistol on Sep 4, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Definitely.
Unless his childhood team offered him a spot.
And it wouldn’t be the 53rd player cut. It’d be either Brohm or Fitzpatrick. They wouldn’t carry 4 qbs.
I think they would try to stash him away.
If they liked Brown more than Fitz or Brohm I’d think they would have cut one of those two already.
NFL teams don't carry 4 QBs
unless at least one of them is a wildcat type or there are week to week injury problems. There aren’t enough roster spots.
The expected and smart move by those who watched preseason and the practices
Brohm impressed; Fitz has the experience. Levi is a so-so rookie.
Agreed. Glad to see this regime is taking the best players, and not sticking guys on the roster who don’t quite belong.

Disagreed. “Never will be’s” like Brohm are a dime a dozen. So Brohm is better today. If Brown was in his third year like Brohm is, I would wholeheartedly agree with the decision. But cutting a rookie QB from a mid-major with his athleticism makes no sense to me.
Brown can be claimed by another team at this point, and the Bills would have no recourse.
how is Brohm a never will bes?
And QBs arent like running backs. If a running back hasnt done anything three years in you get a bit worried because they have short shelf life. A lot of QBs dont emerge until their late 20s and dont hit their prime until 29-32. Brohm doesnt really have any less potential than Brown at this point.

I think this is a reflection of our O-Line quality
We are going to rely on our backups at some point this season because our QB is going to take a beating. We have an unproven O-Line and very questionable depth right now.
You Don't Know that O-Line Won't Get It Done
They weren’t horrible in the preseason for the little bit the starters played.
I hope you are right
but there is really no depth behind our starters. Starters are also pretty young and haven’t played together much. Woods and Bell have been limited so far due to injury. Odds are that we will have to rely on some depth. I think our QB’s could be running for their lives
Why is some random national writer getting scoops over Buffalo News writers? Other than Chan Gailey, I don’t think this paper has broken any news recently when they really should have the best sources.
Because it’s the agents leaking the info and not the players or team.

Josh Reed cut by Chargers today
just in case of you Rumblers were interested in our ex-wideout. Would anyone take him back?
No. I think that it was the right choice to move on. I mean would we have found David Nelson, or at least given him enough playing time in the pre-season to realize how good he was if Reed was still here? I HIGHLY doubt it.
And if we took him back now it would only take away playing time from Johnson and Nelson, and that would be a mistake as well.
I wish him the best, but there is no longer a logical position on this team for him.

Speaking of cuts, I’m interested to see what the Bills do via the waiver wire in the next few days.

I was really sad to see Reed go, being one of his more fervent supporters
But that ship has sailed. We have a very solid group of receivers now. It would be an absolute mammoth slap in the face to Roscoe Parrish. That phrase is the right one but it is not strong enough.

We will hear from him but yet, Reed couldn’t even make the cut in San Diego. What’s that tell ya?

They picked up Patrick Crayton
That’s the only reason they let him go. It was just a value upgrade.

Any thoughts on this guy coming in as a backup? I know he’s aged but I would almost think he would be a better backup then what we currently have.

I want him
hed be a great backup at guard and right tackle and might even prove to be the best option at RT as a starter over Green and Meredith

Big Tuna, Miami cut
last year’s second- and third-round selections Pat White and Patrick Turner, respectively.
Give the Tuna credit for being willing to eat his mistakes. This also goes to show that hes not superman (or SuperGM).

The final roster will be in place by Saturday evening. Remember the deadline is 6 pm. The practice squad will follow a day later. – Chris Brown
Does anyone know if this is local time or EST? I am already seeing cuts posted by west coast teams on NFL.com.

any bets on ellison getting cut over a rookie?
i think with the 4-3 more in play ellison is lock
Ellison is a ST contributor. That unit needs a ton of help, so I have a feeling Ellison is going to make the team. WGR discussed Mitchell getting cut. I really hope that doesn’t happen. I like the guy and he brings the heat as a pass rusher.
