Schefter: Bills Cut WR James Hardy
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Buffalo Bills have cut wide receiver James Hardy.
Hardy was Buffalo's second round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He missed the majority of his rookie season with a knee injury, and then the first part of the 2009 season as he recovered. Injured yet again during training camp this year, he failed to make much of an impact when he returned to the field.
Hardy ends his Bills career with 10 catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Sad. Maybe he’ll catch on somewhere next summer a la Chad Jackson.

Sad is that he exemplifies another 2nd-round bust by the last regime. I truly hope the early draft picks mean more to the team than they have in recent seasons.

Well, not surprised. Disappointed though, was hopeful a couple months ago.

I think it is more likely that Laurel and Hardy comes back to haunt us.
He had one good play in his entire Bills career (the sensational TD catch against Jacksonville). That ain’t enough.

Depth looks great but I’m hoping that the front office is trying to get TJ Hous signed.

Steve Johnson as a starting WRin the NFL is a crime. I’m not sure what I’m missing here. My hunch is that many Bills fans imagine themselves enlightened to the point that adding proven players (something every other team in the league does all the time) is unnecessary when the team has obvious holes. “Imagine” being the key word.
"There's only one C.J. Spiller." -Buddy Nix
It wouldn’t be Housh. Too old, too expensive. Buffalo just won’t be interested, man. Common sense.
by Brian Galliford on Sep 4, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Common sense
I don’t think Housh is realistic because he’ll have suitors that are contending teams. But it’s common sense that former 7th round picks who spent the majority of their two year career as a healthy scratch, are handed a starting WR assignment for no good reason, and don’t distinguish themselves in anyway during the preseason need to be upgraded somehow. Oh well, another season wasting Lee Evans’ talents with a 50 catch season due in part to no complimentary receiver…nothing changes but the date on the calendar.
"There's only one C.J. Spiller." -Buddy Nix
If TO wasn’t the answer how is Housh going to free up Evans? Same basic concerns along the O-line as last year. I just don’t see how bringing him in helps us. I’d much rather see what we have on the roster. If we were one piece away from contending maybe but this is year 1 of a rebuild lets not forget that.
Good point with T.O.
I’m going on the (flimsy) premise that Gailey will be such an upgrade over our offensive staff last year that Edwards will be a competent QB. Bringing in a place holder is important so that teh passing game has a chance in that scenario. There’s nothing on his resume to suggest that Steve Johnson is good enough to start in the NFL. That’s a problem and it’s annoying because it’s an easy one to solve (unlike at other positions were the talent out there is scarce).
"There's only one C.J. Spiller." -Buddy Nix
True
I as well don’t understand all the love for Steve J. but evidently Chan an Co. see something ( as well as a few Rumblers). Will it really take much by Chan to improve our offense? I’m thinking no. It’s our Def. and OL depth that I’m hoping we get some help via waiver wire. Money seems to be a overriding issue with Bill’s, oh well…..

Because Housh has hit his ceiling, he’s kind of a cry-baby, and he’s really expensive. Oh yeah, and he doesn’t help us long term, which goes against just about everything Nix and Gailey have been doing.
Yeah
$$$ probably biggest obstacle, crybaby close second, then we don’t even know if he’d want to play here. Thinking is pretty much not happening!

Housh?!
Hardy being cut is a tough pill to swallow. I think he has great potential, but potential doesn’t always equate to great results if there isn’t effort or that effort is focussed in the wrong direction. In this case, his history or injuries sure doesn’t help his development or support keeping him.
But Housh?! If the Bills could entice him despite the other teams which are considered to be better contenders then great! No matter what any team offers Housh, Seattle is stuck paying the brunt of his check this year. A team could pay him the league minimum, but he’s still guaranteed what Seattle signed him to. Plain and simply though, he won’t come to the Bills. What can the Bills offer to entice him? Nothing that other teams can’t.
I would much rather the Bills scour the waiver wire for solid backup interior offensive linemen. If the Bills can protect Trent Edwards, they have a chance for a respectable 2010. If the O-line falls apart like it did last year, the “experts” predictions about the Bills finishing the season in the basement come true.
Why?
We’ve got enough young guys that hungry to play!! Eff that noise, go w/the guys we’ve got!!

I may be one of the few Bills fans happy about this. We are already 3 deep in RB – need more depth in other positions. Seriously though…how much time was Bell going to get in the game??? Nothing beyond special teams and he hasn’t impressed me all that much by his special teams play.

Just some thoughts running through my head at this moment:
1.) Disappointed. Such potential, being 6 foot 6, 217 pounds and a former basketball player.
2.) What a waste of the 41st pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. How much better would this team be if instead of Hardy we had DeSean Jackson, Chad Henne, Martellus Bennett, Early Doucet, Jermichael Finely, Mario Manningham, Fred Davis, etc. I know, I know, you could say that about each and every pick…doesn’t make it any less true, though.
3.) May never know exactly what went wrong here. I’d guess Hardy’s injury just set him back and he was never able to fully catch up in his development? But is that really what happened? He caught a few passes his rookie year and seemed to be coming along…so if he wasn’t injured would he have been a good player? Was motivation an issue? Why did he just seem to get “lost” in the mix? Did anybody try to salvage the situation, considering the high level of investment and potential? Didn’t it seem like the Bills didn’t try hard enough to see what we have here? NFL teams these days will do ANYTHING to help a guy with potential succedd…so why does it seem like the Bills just didn’t really care if Hardy was progressing as planned? (granted, I don’t know that is the case….just feels like it is.) That just seems odd to me…
4.) Doesn’t it take players 2 full years to get back to form from some leg injuries?
5.) And doesn’t it often take bigger, taller WRs longer to fully become a good player? (Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd)
5.) Is this season important enough where the Bills would need to keep a guy like Donald Brown over a “lottery ticket” type player like Hardy? Giving the guy just 3 years, especially when a good portion of that was when he was injured….just doesn’t seem like a fair shake.
6.) I just have this feeling that we will come to regret cutting James Hardy. May not be in the next year or two even, but there is just too much potential there, IMO.
7.) We cannot miss this badly on top 50 draft picks if we are going to be a good team. Especially since we don’t sign big dollar free agents….the draft is where we get our talent. The Bills had their choice of any draft eligible player outside of the first 40 choosen….and the guy will not even be on our team 3 years after. Just unacceptable.
8.) And finally, after all of my above thoughts….James Hardy just didn’t do enough to make this team. That’s all their is to it. I can’t be too mad the Bills cut him….James Hardy has to take personal responsibility…he didn’t do enough to make this team, and that’s disappointing.
