Well I finally lost...
I made a bet with Poz and Keysh and I lost. I bet that come cut down day, when the Bills determined their 53 man roster, that for whatever the reason, Marshawn Lynch was not going to be on the roster. Please note that before you make any comments about this that you should know A) why I made this bet, and B) that this bet was made even before the draft. Now there are a great many reasons why I made this bet and even though some of the very people I debated this subject with still apparently have no clue what my point was, a bet is a bet. So here it goes.
Poz - While your loyalty to the Bills can reach zealot like status at times, you are a true Bills fan. Loyal to the end. You are the Hachiko of the Buffalo Bills. Your faith in the Bills will hopefully be rewarded some day.
Keysh - While you have never demonstrated the true faith to the level of Poz, you have shown an amazing amount of trust in Bills draft picks. Your desire to hold onto draft picks until the bitter end and never compromise on cutting your losses, instead hoping that they pan out is commendable.
You are both incredibly wise beyond your years and when many not just myself thought Marshawn was a goner, you stood by him. Congrats and for all of our sakes lets hope that this was the correct decision by Buddy Nix.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Thank you for owning up to your bet Eric
Not sure about the wise beyond my years as I’m pretty old..
For the record, my faith in draft picks is not universal at all. For example, I am glad that we cut Hardy and Lankster both showed little to no improvement and never really showed any glimpse of their upside. I do tend to want to trust our talent evaluators and if they saw fit to draft someone in the first or second round, I would then tend to look a bit deeper and be a bit more patient – like for example Maybin, McKelvin both of which are in make or break season IMO.
Specifically in Marshawn’s case, I have always liked the way he plays the game – he is a monster to bring down. I do however hate the way he dances around, I have always believed that he was more of a workhorse pounding type and now with our new toy the duo could be something very special. If Marshawn was the only guy we had then I would have probably wanted to see him traded only because I like you Eric am not sure how much we can count on him. But given that we have CJ & Freddy – I think that there is actually very little risk and only reward to give the guy another chance. At a minimum, keeping him to let him increase his trade value makes a whole lot of sense to me. But I won’t hide the fact that deep down I am hoping that the kid has finally learned a lesson and will get his sh%t together and come back with a vengeance. BEAST MODE baby!

I posted this exact same thing last week, and apparantly made sireric puke! lmao

I don’t think Eric is hoping that Lynch fails again, he just is not ready to entrust him with being our #1 back. If Marshawn does in fact turn things around I am sure that Eric will eventually come around. The problem is it will take a few years and I think a decision to extend him will come before Marshawn has a chance to earn back Eric’s trust. So when and if Nix decides to extend Lynch, we are surely going to reopen this epic debate.

Marshawn will not sign an extension with us
He’s pissed we drafted Spiller.
So, he’s going to keep his mouth shut, play his butt off, stay out of off-field trouble, and go for the big-money contract AND starter role again when he becomes an UFA.

I think I smell another bet here...
I am quite convinced that the Lynch/Spiller duo will be very successful. If my prediction comes true, he should be utilized like the Barbarian barber as the bruiser north south runner.
First of all, he still has a few years left on his contract and he could also be tagged so essentially he could be with us for 3y before an extension or other. If he has success in 2010 and stays out of trouble, then we are in a great position to extend him or make him play out his contract. Nix holds all the cards on this one.

You pretty much just hit the nail on the head there. I think that this is the last (no option) year on his contract. I don’t see him with us next season unless there isn’t a new CBA in place.

So you are glad that they cut Hardy who after all his injuries was essentially in his second year, but are willing to give guys like McKelvin and Maybin extra chances? ?????? Seems odd to me.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
Absolutely
Hardy had ample chances to prove himself. Scuba Steve was drafted the same year and he’s made the most of every opportunity he’s gotten. He’s outplayed Hardy every single time. Now with Nelson (undrafted) also outplaying him and then add his fragility and his off the field stuff from his first season and you start to see that Hardy has a long way to go before actually being able to crack a starting spot. Easley had a much better camp than him as well. In Hardy’s case, I believe that his contract will run out before he actually develops, thus wasting our time for nothing.
I’ll admit that I am not a Maybin fan at all and I seriously doubt that he will ever develop into anything as a Buffalo Bill. I hope that I am wrong but somehow I doubt it. He’s so full of himself and immature that it seems to be hindering his development. I was hoping he’d blossom as the Rush OLB but he just seems to fester in a cloud of mediocrity. I really hope the light goes on this year cause I’ll be calling for change by 2011
As for Leo, I think he’s shown some glimpses of his potential and I am not willing to write him off just yet, we need a solid replacement for McGee by 2012 and I still retain hope that Leo can be that guy.

Has Johnson really outplayed Hardy?
Neither has done much in their careers. Last year, both were non-existent. Johnson looks more than part than Hardy, but it’s not like he’s done a whole lot to distinguish himself.

Granted he has not gotten many starts but the reps he did get he’s made the most of them. I made it a point to watch both of them in preseason since they were both drafted and clearly Johnson has played better in the limited action he’s seen. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not implying that he’s been spectacular but he’s been solid. The one thing I love about Steve Johnson is his blocking skills, he ain’t affraid to get his nose dirty whereas a guy like Hardy is quite a bit more dainty and is basically a one trick pony. I like what Steve brings to the table as a #2, he’s going to have a solid season. Good possession receiver with a mean streak in the blocking game

Wait a minute here....
If Lynch was our only quality RB, you’d want him traded? But since he’s 3rd on the depth chart, it’s good to keep him around? That seems pretty backwards to me!

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
not at all
If he were our only option, i’d prefer getting a better more reliable option. I agree with Eric’s point that Lynch has kinda burned himself and it’s hard to trust him. I didn’t express myself properly because there is practically no situation where I would have been OK with a trade for a late round pick, I meant to say that if he were the only back, then it would have been a priority to find another back for insurance reasons.

Let's rec this one guys.
I’ve been on this blog for nearly 2 years (reading and then participating) and I’ve seen nearly half a dozen bets of this type that Eric has done over my time here. This is the first one he has lost. And seeing as how I have lost some to Eric, I say we rec this one to keep it up as long as possible ;-)

way to own up sireric
I have been awaiting this day for quite a while. I must say, after the CJ Spiller draft pick I pictured you laughing like a hyena thinking you had the bet sealed. It is quite rewarding to finally take down the master of bets. Since the bet is officially over, and myself and Keysh’s dominance confirmed, I suppose I should take some time to say a few words about the man who inspired this little gentlemans bet.
Marshawn Lynch is the man. He may run over women with his car, speed off, blaze a joint, and skip OTAs stoned as a hippie. But when he steps on the field he is a unique and special member of the National Football League. Marshawn is a guy I want on my side. Hes a guy you want to go into battle with. Old school and new school all at the same time. His running style is that of a bar brawler, he will stiff arm, put his head down, punch you in the face if he has to just to get an extra yard. You just don’t find many guys anymore who want that extra yard just because. Its his yard, not yours. And hes going to get it. He won over the fans with his love of Buffalo and the smile he keeps on his face even as he violently bowls over a corner. I hope he stays here his whole career and I hope he and CJ Spiller form a formidable duo for years to come – one you just can’t catch and the other a guy you really don’t want to catch. Fred has been good for Marshawn and I hope his demotion humbles him instead of causing him to seek employment elsewhere.
Oh and yes, CBF, I will rec this because I want all to see sireric’s honest assessment of myself and keysh’s superiority.
Hachiko died from a heart infected with filarial worms and according to wikipedia, had yakitori sticks found in his stomach. One could only be so lucky.

Good Job Poz!
It does feel good to have stuck one to the great Sir Eric! I’d bet that he was so upset at having to write this post that he actually wore a pair of pants to write it!
I know you’re just joking but I’d like to believe that he made a serious error in judgment when he drove under the influence and had the hit & run, I really don’t think that he’s proud of it. Anyways, I need to believe this otherwise it would be difficult for me to continue to support him.
Now I hope that Levitre & Wood have a huge step forward and have a huge season and run block like demons for our boy. I also hope that Modkins take Marshawn aside and explains to him that he ain’t nimble or quick – he’s just a very big brute. He needs to teach Marshawn to hit the hole (any hole) hard and without any hesitation. If he can get Marshawn doing that and not trying to dance around he’ll have a very big season.
Note: In the game again Detroit, Marshawn’s final run was just awful – he lost yards because he tried to be fancy and in fact had he continued, the hole did in fact open up to the left side but instead he juked around and lost yardage. He really needs to just pound it north south and get every inch he can and the rest will fall into place.

I would have made this same bet. No way did I ever think Lynch would still be on this team for the upcoming season.
are you disappointed that he still is? would you have preferred a 4-5th round pick in a trade?

this is an interesting way of looking at it.
Is there ANY player drafted after the 3rd round last year you’d rather have on the roster than Marshawn Lynch?

sireric, I feel your pain
Lynch doesn’t get traded after Spiller is drafted, Edwards wins the starting job, Brohm and Fitz make the roster, while Brown doesn’t even get a PS invite. We don’t trade for a OT even though Bell has been slow to recover and get back onto the field, and Green’s play has been questionable at best. Where did I put that copy of Football for Dummies ??
If all the stars align, pigs learn to fly, humanity achieves world peace, doctors discover a cure for cancer, scientists perfect cold fusion, and hell freezes over, the Bills might win the SB this year.
We are either getting our franchise LT or franchise QB next year – or maybe even both
Rebuilding a team properly takes time and patience
I just realized that my response didn’t really say much, but the way Nix did it will
a) Fix the running game one and for all
b) As it pertains to the QBs, he’s making sure there is nothing here before going to the store. I’d also add that signing Bradford to $50M guaranteed was just crazy and maybe Nix decided to wait until the bubble busts?
c) I think the same argument can be said about the Tackles but I also think he just didn’t like what he say at the top of the draft in our slot. Bulaga, Ducasse both have been disappointments and I’m not really sure where A.Davis is in his development. About the only guy that seems to have been a decent pickup was Staffold but was a second rounder. The good news was that I had read that the guy that the Bills liked was Staffold, which at the very least tells me that they are decent talent evaluators.
I fully expect to be in the bottom dwellers this year and I am perfectly OK with that. It will position us in the draft. Rome was not built in a day and you need to be the first one in line to get the good seats! I do however expect some major improvement in the Run offense & defense this year as well as the offensive play-calling. If we can show solid improvement in those areas then for me this year was a complete success and part of the path to becoming a playoff contender once again.
