Brian should get a press credential!

I've been an avid reader and fan of BuffaloRumblings for a couple of years now.  I am continually amazed at the quality, consistency and frequency of the writing and analysis by Brian and crew, and I rely on you more than mainstream press for my Buffalo Bills fix. So much so, that I think you deserve a press credential and should get into any game or practice that the press can without paying.  What do you think Rumblers?  Rec this if you agree, and maybe Chris Brown or Tim Graham can get word to the powers that be.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I'd be happy to see both Brian and MRW get press credentials.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Brian does an awesome job now...

think of how much better it could be if he had press credentials.

by joe r on Sep 8, 2010 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed.

Granted, I don’t post anything worth reading, but I am an avid reader of everyone else.

With the insight provided with the credentials, I’m sure we would all be given a more complete analysis provided, had they more access. Granted, I don’t know how much more time they could give based on the time available, for these members as it is. I’m confident we all all have other things than the Bills going in our lives. Although, some days I’m not so sure. Especially as the opener against Miami grows closer.

Certainly wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they had considerably more access.

But, as a foremost Buffalo Bills site and the astute information provided from all members that is shared, I think it’s the least the Bills could do to help our fan base.

Very deserving to say the least. Anyone got an inside contact at One Bills Drive to get it done? I know I don’t…

There’s no downside for the Bills and lots of upside. Embracing a (non-insane) blog with a big following would seem to be a no-brainer.

All companies are naturally afraid of social media – they don’t want crazies in an uncontrolled environment damaging their brand, so they shy aware from participating actively (I’m sure they are lurking though). The best companies though have embraced social media because they trust their brand and take criticism as valuable input, and they recognize that having a bunch of passionate spokespeople who are true fans (which is what we all are) creates more value than selling another 5,000 shirts. Brian and crew in their writing, analysis and policies have done a great job fostering a constructive environment here without being Kool-Aid’ish, so this is a social media site with one of the lowest risks, and an established track record over multiple years.

So here’s another idea to show how powerful the site is – run a survey about where all the Rumblers are by state. I would bet that will show how much of a national impact this site has, and how much more it could be if Brian and team got more direct access to the team.

by cajunasian on Sep 9, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Try international – I just shake my head when a FanPost pops up asking if there are any other people from Australia, and more than one or two replies trickle in.

by Brian Galliford on Sep 9, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t disagree about the criticism thing but the Bills are notorious for not taking criticism well either. The local sports radio station talks about it all the time.

they don’t want crazies in an uncontrolled environment damaging their brand

If that was true, then why do the Bills give any national media outlet a press pass? The national sports media have been contemptuous and dismissive of the Bills for virtually the team’s entire existence. I doubt that any blogger, much less any blogger who follows the team as consistently as Brian does, can possibly do worse than ESPN, CBS and Yahoo do on a regular basis. If there is anyone who is “damaging their brand” it is the national outlets.

Yes, Brian does a good job.

But you have to understand the business side of it, the bread and butter of team revenue is the television contracts.

The Buffalo News is owned by Newscorp (FOX)

Fox pays major money to broadcast NFL games. So they don’t want competition with their corporations.

Even though this has better info, the only way a blogger will get those press passes, is by being so successful independently, than the people they already have in the corporations that fund the NFL, and getting hired onto the corporate team that funds the NFL.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Complements the Bills' business model, not competes with it

If Brian were showing games, I would agree with you – the Bills would not want to associate with or recognize a site that isn’t aboveboard. But in my mind, he’s increasing viewership of and loyalty to the Bills by creating balanced and fair coverage of the team – past, present and future. And especially for those of us outside the city who don’t have a local community of Bills fans, it sustains us – had it not been for this site, and the consistently rational and balanced opinions on it by the editors, I might have given up on the Bills two years ago. So do it this way:

The Bills give him a press credential if it’s his journalistic integrity, with access equivalent to others.

The Bills give him a season pass with locker room access if he’s a marketing partner – I personally would pay quite a bit of marketing $ to support a blogger who attracted as vocal and passionate a following and gave my company insight into what customers think. Heck, the Bills just got free market research from the “mood” poll with more than 1,000 votes – that’s a big sample!

Lastly, Fox rarely if ever shows Bills games anyways given its NFC focus, so they can’t hang the threat of withholding coverage because the Bills associate with a site that in theory steals from their Buffalo News readership (a stretch anyways). And if it motivates them to invest in the News to sustain its readership, that’s a good thing for Buffalo too. And if it just annoys them, even better.

They could at least link to Buffalo Rumblings from the Bills website! They have a bunch of other, lower quality fantasy football sites in their “Blogroll” on Inside the Bills. Why not this site?

by Undee on Sep 9, 2010 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

For-profit companies do market research on customers all the time – customer satisfaction, likes and dislikes, preferences. And the Buffalo Bills are, in essence, a for-profit company. I run marketing for a company, and while by corporate America standards the budget is small, we still spend six figures on market research annually. The Bills almost certainly spend a lot more than that.

The Bills get free results through every survey on this site, and also qualitative feedback on every article through these comments. There are probably hundreds of posters, and thousands of lurkers – all passionate Bills fans who (I’m sure) are little viruses spreading the word of the Bills.

So if you want to entice them further with your reach, offer them that you’ll run surveys on satisfaction with the Ralph’s hot dogs and beverages, parking, how people like uniform changes, etc. (or offer to do so for them, while protecting the editorial integrity of the site so you keep the core of what makes this site great). If I’m running marketing for the Bills, I would listen.

In the age of the Blog, I think the Bills (actually the NFL as a whole) need to realize that their fan base has expanded in terms of where they get their team information. Recognizing this fact, combined with the quality of knowledge and professionalism that Brian, MRW & the rest of the crew here possess, make this a prime knowledge base for the fans and should be certainly recognized as such by the team.

Y'all miss the point

Press credentials are given to journalists who EARN A LIVING covering sports. That’s their profession – they do it for a living and feed their families with the paycheck. Buffalo Rumblings is just a blog. Nothing personal. Yes, we all appreciate Brian and all the guys who contribute here, and put in a lot of time, but it’s hobby to them – period. (I’m assuming the editors here have a regular job. This is why they don’t get press credentials to the games, and the same goes for all the hockey, baseball, basketball, etc., bloggers on SB Nation. If SB editors get paid for their articles and I am wrong, then, by all means, give him a Bills pass.

by ccthemovieman on Sep 9, 2010 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

I have a degree in Journalism and Mass Media. I do get paid to write here, but it’s certainly not enough to live on.

To be quite honest, you’re bang on. At least, from my personal perspective. I’m quite busy enough working out of Rochester without having to huff it down the thruway to listen to Chan Gailey for 10 minutes, or to listen to Trent Edwards spout cliches. Particularly when that information is so readily available via the Internet, and so quickly. The only time Matt and I have ever applied for credentials is to cover training camp, because a) it’s in Rochester, b) it’s during the summer, so Matt has a lot more free time (and I can make some), and c) I believe that training camp coverage is lacking, aside from the excellent camp reports from BuffaloBills.com. Joe Buscaglia did some nice work with WGR this year, but that’s really about it.

Should SB Nation ever grow to the point where I’m able to do this for a living, certainly, I’d covet a press pass. I believe I’m qualified to have one. But quite honestly, right now, I’d rather keep doing what I’m doing – writing what I want to write, supplementing the excellent local coverage of the team, and sitting in the stands in the fans during games, where I belong.

Whether you ‘earn a living’ from covering sports or not shouldn’t be the criteria for getting a press pass. I’d think it’d be based on merit, or something crazy like that.

There’s certainly many, many people that get press passes that earn a living covering sports who are simply hacks.

And there’s certainly people that who ‘blog’ who are clearly more qualified to have a press pass than people that do. I think Brian has proven that he falls in this group. Whether he’s interested in that or not is a different story (regardless of whether he’s paid or not for doing it).

Get a buzz cut, I have always been a supporter of you, and believed in you, get a look that scares the opponent. You have been doing alot better with Chan, but the Ashton Kutcher look has got to go.

And no

I wasn’t at the practice that gailey got mad at the people in the stands.

I just want to see this team toughen up and get some thick skins.

Look at Favre and his buzz cut, did you see them pics of the bruises from the NFC championship game?

I would like to puch him with a right uppercut for every Bills fan he has inflicted misery in over the past 10 years, sorry If that is how I feel.
