Sullivan: In climb back to contention, franchise needs to bottom out - The Buffalo News
"You don't dig this deep a hole and pull yourself out overnight. That was Donahoe's mistake, trying to rebuild the public's faith before he rebuilt the roster. You need to be honest. Bills management needs to be honest and admit they need to bottom out before starting the road back to a genuine contender."

It's finally time for Edwards to stand on his own two feet, to play with the daring and verve of a man who believes his career is on the line. He's playing for his NFL future. If he can see the fun in that, maybe there's hope for him, after all."

Sullivan is the most cynical bitter columnist ever. Why would he suggest the Bills lose a lot of games? Plenty of other teams have had a lot of success and not hit bottom. He wants to appear smart so he turns on the bitter. What a loser.

What teams have had a lot of success without hitting bottom?
The Colts drafted Peyton number 1. Ditto Giants and Eli and Chargers and Rivers.
The Saints, Packers, Vikings all drafted in the top 5 a few years ago.
Even the Cardinals got Larry Fitzgerald by drafting in the top 3.
The Patriots got a 6th round QB and turned him into a dynasty. That’s great but before that they were drafting in the top ten for a while too in the early 90s to build that first Super Bowl team. They maintained it, to their credit.

“After I left Alabama, I was coaching in high school and they had a charity golf tournament,” Nix recalls. “I won it. Coach Bryant was the speaker. He gave out the award, and it was like a golf bag or something. When he handed it to me, he said, ‘You can’t coach worth a damn if you can play golf like that.’ And I put the clubs up and didn’t play again for five years. That’s how much what he thought meant.”
What a hilarious line.
Really good article on Buddy Nix
I like him even more!
Rebuilding a team properly takes time and patience
Yep. Fantastic piece. I hope people find those couple of paragraphs about the O-Line being their top priority going into the draft comforting. Not a lot of GMs would reveal that information.
by Brian Galliford on Sep 9, 2010 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions
was just about the post that information because it’s what I’ve been saying – sort of a vindication – there simply wasn’t the guys available – same with QB.
We felt like we needed to upgrade our offensive line," Nix said of the assessment after he was hired. “We started out looking for that. That was our main emphasis going into the draft. But by the time we got through doing our work, there was one or two guys we felt really strongly about coming in and helping us. And neither one of them were there.”

Yeah, it’s nice to hear that and all…but, they still didn’t draft an offensive linemen until the 5th round. If they didn’t like Bulaga, Clausen, Anthony Davis or Tebow at 9, that’s fine. I don’t want them to draft guys they don’t want just to appease the fans. But am I supposed to believe they didn’t like Beadles, Veldheer, John Jerry, Charles Brown or Bruce Campbell with any of their picks after that? They didn’t like anyone before Wang?
Saying they needed to upgrade the offensive line isn’t exactly surprising – everyone is well aware their offensive line is at or near the bottom of the league. So…how about you actually do something about it?

Rome wasn’t built in a day.
and to your other point – BPA Jon – why would they take a guy like Beadles, etc… if they had Troup rated much higher?
It kills me that the last few years we screamed BPA because we were drafting for need and then we finally go BPA and everyone complains about it.
guess they just can’t win in that department
Listen! You smell something?
by J2 on Sep 9, 2010 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions
No I get the BPA argument. But Nix says…
“Here’s the way I feel,” Nix said. “Obviously you want to fill the need. That’s obvious. If you can, you do. But you don’t fill the need at the expense of making sure it’s a good player. You fill a need with a guy who can play and you upgrade your football team. If you can’t then you go to the one that can.”
He’s not saying it’s strictly BPA. And, it sounds like to me, he’s saying he doesn’t think any of those other tackles would upgrade the football team. Which, obviously, I vehemently disagree with.
Overall, I’m happy with a lot of the players picked. But, Brian’s comment was that we should take comfort in the fact that o-line was their top priority, and I don’t take any comfort in the fact that they recognize their o-line is a trainwreck and yet, they did nothing to improve it.

well they did add Green so that’s a piece. They got 2 guys back from injury in Bell and Wood plus added depth through FA.
it’s not like i’m happy about the line situation either – but I can understand picking the better players because this is a team that needs better players across the board

by J2 on Sep 9, 2010 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions
i think the problem is just that some of us still don’t quite believe it (or quite understand their bpa rankings) – what i mean by this is, i understand if they didn’t think jimmy clausen was first round top ten pick talent – but they had troup rated higher than him in the second? i don’t agree with that at all. compound that with the fact that they obviously filled a need with troup, who most people rated as a third round pick – it seems possible that they couldve gone BPA at a needed position there, but not in other places.
don’t get me wrong, i’m not second guessing at this point. it just seems like there’s been a lot of talk about a declaration of firm policy (bpa) as to why we took spiller; but that doesn’t necessarily seem like the case through the rest of the draft.
by quantumuprising on Sep 9, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions
I can see that point – but I also think that Clausen isn’t all “that” like a lot of other people think. actually – I really am not a fan of his at all

Some quotes from Sullivan’s “hitting bottom” column.
“Chan Gailey looks like a real head coach.”
If anything, this is what has been reassuring to me so far. He carries himself the way I think a head coach is supposed to be. I am a firm believer that an organization takes on the personality of their leader. I’ve liked almost everything I have heard out of Chan’s mouth since the intro presser, and if the Bills can come out with the confidence and toughness I hear out of Chan, I will be happy regardless of record, for this year, anyway.
“If Nix thought they were a playoff contender, he might have gone after a top-level offensive tackle or outside linebacker.”
I think that is one of the most insightful comments on the draft I’ve read so far.
Some good reading this morning. Agree with above comments – that Nix article is great.
Schobel wasn’t a captain last year – Poz and Mitchell were. Kelsay and Whitner were the defensive captains in 2008.
Unsurprisingly, the offense and special teams captains have been constant since 2008.
Ahhh…. Kelsay was “re-elected” it said. So maybe he was before Poz and Mitchell.
