Case for drafting a QB

I know that a lot of people have suggested we go defensive line (Fairley) with the Bills #1 pick. The rationale being that Fitz is playing well enough to get the Bills to the playoffs if he is surrounded with enough talent. So what the Bills need to do is focus on the defense right now. In theory I totally agree with that. However, I was thinking about our main rival in the AFC East right now. Back in the day of Kelly, Thurman, Reed, Bruce, and Tasker the Patriots were the Patsies. They were perennial losers. So what changed? They drafted Bledsoe. And then they drafted Brady. You can say that Belichick turned around the Patriots, but where would they be without strong QB play. The defense is not always great. The O line is not always great. But the team is at the top because of Brady. If you look at the Colts it is almost the same story. They were generally terrible until they drafted Manning. Since then they have been a fixture in the playoffs despite a usually subpar defense.

So I would say that Buddy Nix needs to follow through with what Ralph Wilson tasked him with early in the season. Find a franchise QB. I don't know if that is Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert #3 overall or someone else like Locker later on. But we need to find a franchise QB. Fitz is good and could take the team to the playoffs, but then what? Someone like Brady and Manning make the rest of the offense better, with Fitz it is the other way around. If we want the Bills to have a reasonable shot at consistently getting to the playoffs and winning a Super bowl, which means challenging the Patriots and the other top teams, we need a franchise signal caller and not just a guy who can get it done with a strong supporting cast.

Thoughts?
