Targeting some browns players

Now that Cleveland have settle their Head coaching position and that Shurmur is now rounding out his staff, rumor has it that he's inclined to switch to a 4-3 scheme.  They are even considering Dick Jauron as DC.

This means that some of their guys will not fit schematically.  Given our glaring needs on on the Defensive side of the ball, I suspect that we'll be potential suitors for 1-2 of those Cleveland misfits.

Star-divide

From what I can see Matt Roth (OLB) at 6'4" 275lbs is coming off his best year of his career (86 tackles, 3.5 sacks).  He's a free agent in 2011 and I doubt they resign him if they intend on switching to a 4-3.

Another LB going into free agency is Jason Trusnik, who shows promise as an outside backer.

Then there's the big guy, the big kahuna! Shawn Rogers.  I know many will say that he's getting old and that he's always had issues battling weight and having the stamina to finish games.  I wonder if we had a guy like that for sure run plays, which would let us move Kyle around.  Nobody can argue that if you can afford to use rogers sparingly, he's a big man that really block's out the sunlight and he makes it incredibly difficult for teams to run up the middle.  Slide Williams to DE on the strong side and now we're in business!  Just a thought.  And I doubt that Rogers would get a ton of money at this point in his career.  I sort of compare him to Grady Jackson or Sam Adams, both became situational assets late in their careers.  I know we have Troup, but he still has a ways to go before he's considered effective in the run game.  Letting him develop behind Rogers might not be bad.

Food for thought.  If Jauron actually does get the job and converts them to a 4-3, there are some opportunities to improve our team, especially with Roth.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Draft Picks

Wouldn’t us signing any of these guys cost us draft picks. Not arguing your thoughts but until Buddy decides to go this route it is a question worth asking and IMO before Buddy does cough up draft picks for FA it would have to be a no brainer. Buddy seems to value his draft picks during this rebuild process more than anything at this point.

If Jauron ends up as their DC, it might be possible to trade some of his former guys that don’t fit our new scheme for some of their guys that no longer fit the Browns new scheme. Obviously none of that can happen until there’s a new CBA anyway.

I think the compensatory draft picks are extra picks given by the league not the team that signs them.

I wouldnt mind us poking around at Rogers.

The guys a beast. Sure hes slowed down and a little long in the tooth… but the guy can plug holes and like you said, would only be situational. Put him on a field to take on 2 defenders in the middle and then let Kyle Williams penetrate somewhere else.

i read in one of the posts that dick jauron will stick with 3-4 if hired… it said, he is a guy who uses a system according to the personnel… when he was hired, we had 4-3 personnel… so he only minorly tweaked it to go to 4-3 tampa instead of going to 3-4…

this post was in cleveland SB nation website… didnt take the time to find it and post it here, sorry…

although i question the entire post, considering he has always been around 4-3 teams his entire life, if i am correct

He is so passive as a person and coach, I can’t see him in anything else but a very bland “bend but don’t break” type of defense. He doesn’t see to have an aggressive bone in his body, I fail to see how he could ever make a 3-4 work.

Mabye I’m in the minority, but I think DJ would be a good hire in Cleveland. There are plenty who don’t make it as HCs but are good coordinators. Plus I don’t see how the 3-4 is really any more aggressive than the 4-3. You still usually have 4 guys crashing down on the line, it’s just that in the 3-4 you can move it around more.

Dick Jauron was our head coach for nearly 4 years

I’ll take our impression over an article. Dick Jauron has always been a Tampa 2 guy. Maybe he changes now, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Chris Gocong would be the player that I would be most interested in. Not a FA until 2012, but maybe they’d want to move him for a late round pick. I think he could be a solid long term solution as the thumper ILB next to Poz. He’s versatile enough to backup at OLB too.

Kenyon Coleman is another player who will be a FA in 2012 and could come in and start right away. He’d be a nice upgrade over Stroud. Coleman is a much better fit as a 5 tech in a 3-4 than he would be playing any role in a 4-3.

I think Roth is a fine fit in a 4-3. I think he’s actually a better fit with a hand on the ground. If Cleveland does let him walk, he’d be an upgrade over Kelsay. Too bad that Buffalo probably won’t look to improve on the OLB position in FA. They’ve already got a lot of money invested in Kelsay and Merriman. They’ve already got a couple roster spots invested in young guys. They’ll probably prefer taking another one in the draft and working on a bit of a youth movement in the backup spots and it’s what they should do with Merriman sticking around.

Gocong for Maybin and Coleman for McCargo :-)

Is it bad that I have a lot of pitty for Browns fans right now?

ANd I’d sign Roth, but stay away from Rogers. The big guy does not fit out 34-46 hybrid at all.

I suppose this is as good a place as any to bring this up

but with the Browns considering Dick Jauron as their defensive coordinator, should we be considering bringing in Rob Ryan to run our 3-4?

The Ryans are so competitive I bet Rob would love to face his brother twice a year.

Give me Eric Mangini....he may not be a good HC yet,

but the guy is a good DC and very smart.

I think Edwards deserves a second year before we throw him under any bus. It takes a few years to convert and I think we need to be patient here, at least for another year, then send in the dogs!

you shouldn’t say that… Jauron was a bad Head Coach but I think he’s a very good positions coach as well as Defensive coordinator, if you like the Tampa 2 scheme.

Matt Roth would be an interesting addition because he’s a typical elephant OLB whose job isn’t to rush the passer but rather to run-stop and set the edge due to his enormous 275 pound frame. Kelsay clearly showed this year that he isn’t capable of effectively doing that which is why I think we should look to sign an experienced guy like Roth who still has some potential.

Dont get Rogers, he irratates me

Ill take Roth though…

I still remember flying paper airplanes at One Bills Drive during a game against the Redskins during the strike year... my first Bills game.

I own a Rob Johnson signed jersey, so with that in mind if i like the Bills QB just expect him to fall on a football and break his ribs.

Browns deals; Jauron

I wish the Browns the best if their organization picks Dick Jauron, he wasn’t a bad coach but his approach was too laid back, his defense, the Tampa 2 as well as personnel in the draft was very questionable. Maybe he will turn it around in Cleveland. For the players in Cleveland, Nix want to build the Bills through the draft. If a few of their players fall through the cracks, so be it. But I wouldn’t make any moves until after or before the draft in April. Their team must be willing to negotiate some type of deal.
