Buffalo Bills Need Help At Wide Receiver
The Buffalo Bills have found it increasingly difficult to pass the football effectively in the last three weeks as the team's receiving corps has grown thinner while getting exposed for its lack of top-end speed.
First, the team traded Lee Evans to Baltimore. Marcus Easley and Roscoe Parrish then landed on Injured Reserve; within a span of six weeks, the team's three fastest receivers were off the roster. Donald Jones, the de facto deep threat ever since, left yesterday's win over Philadelphia with an ankle injury that will keep him out "a while."
Teams are finding it easier to lock down on Stevie Johnson on the edge, even though Johnson continues to make key catches. David Nelson has almost been completely eradicated from the offense; he has three catches for 24 yards (and, yes, a touchdown) in his last 10 quarters of play. Naaman Roosevelt came up with some clutch catches yesterday (5-41), but no one's going to be scared of him getting deep, either.
For the foreseeable future, the Bills are down to Johnson, Nelson, Roosevelt and Ruvell Martin at receiver. At minimum, they need to add a body; if that body can pick up Chan Gailey's offense quickly and hurt a defense vertically, the Bills may have an easier time throwing the football sooner than most people think.

THE RETURN OF T.O!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where is he in his recovery? I doubt he’s ready to play.

Yeah we won’t see him in the NFL until at least mid november

I like the idea of bringing back T.O.
he loved Fitz, but I don’t think Nix is too big on him. Fact of the matter is, we’re desperate for speed. Me personally, I like Moss. He has more speed than T.O. and will complement our other WR’s better I think. Plus he has much better hands! Wow! Ok, I’m getting a little excited about the thought of bringing in Moss. That’s an instant upgrade at wr that will open our offense up. Even with being doubled Moss will still grab it, unlike T.O. who won’t give as much effort. If we get Moss, our offense just became unstoppable!
TO
Has pretty much always given more effort than Moss
Agreed – Moss at his best might have been the better player, but TO gave quite a bit of effort as a player.

by effort i mean
effort to actually go up and fight for the ball against a defender. maybe effort was a poor choice of words? maybe it’s because T.O. drops too many passes and never takes responsibility for his butter fingers. Moss is a sure fire catcher to me, and is feared more than T.O. IMO Will T.O. now still demand to be doubled?
Besides T.O., Moss, Josh Reed, and James Hardy, who else is out there? If he is healthy I’d be fine with bringing TO back, his problem was with Trent and the Jauron staff, not Fitzy.

That long TD Pass...
That he had with Fitz doesn’t hurt either. I think TO still holds the longest TD pass for a Bill if I’m not mistaken.

That would make the most sense, IMO
This team is making me skeptical of my skepticism- putting the crow in the oven to slow roast.
Yah kamar makes most sense. If we signed a guy I would choose TO. Apperantly all healthy and running full practices state side with carson and houshmenzada.

Last year he didn't have a torn ACL
I don’t want a 37 year old ‘speed’ receiver that has a blown out knee and is coming back early. I don’t want that even if he is a good locker room guy…which TO is most definitely not. He was ‘good’ last time he was here but who knows how that clown will act now. I really do not see one positive thing about bringing him in.
He is old
He doesn’t know the offense
He is a giant jackass
He is coming off of a major knee injury
The fact that none of the 32 teams seem interested should be a sign that this guy is worthless.
Your hate is absolutely off base. In his year here, he didn’t play old. He was not a jackass at all. Yes, he’s coming off an injury, but at least giving him a look can’t hurt. And he’s an experienced veteran who could pick up the offense as quickly if not more quickly than any other receiver we could pick up in FA. Plus, he’s familiar with Fitz, Jackson, and Stevie, and has had success with them before.
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity. And in the end we are what we pretend to be." - Jerry Cantrell.
I do not want to mess with the chemistry of this team one bit
Bringing him in is too much of a risk. This is not TO from 5 years ago, this isn’t even the TO that was here. This is the TO that has a bad knee. Different body, same crazy head on his shoulders.

I could swear we had this same argument about Vince Young in the offseason
We both sound like broken records.
That may be, but VY was never here. TO’s already proven to be an asset to the team when he was here. I would worry about his knee, too, but bringing him in for a workout seems like a no-brainer to me.
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity. And in the end we are what we pretend to be." - Jerry Cantrell.
This is a completely different team and organization.
You really can not compare our situation in 2009 to what it is now. That isn’t fair.
No problem bringing T.O. in
Why not bring him in, no stone should be left unturned as the Bills try to continue to win and upgrade a position that has been besieged by injuries.
"You tell 'em I'M coming... and HELL'S coming with me, you hear?... "

I understand some of the sentiments but your sort of overlooking the whole situation and idea behind my comment. If we signed someone. This is preparing for week 6. If a guy is not playing yet of course thers a reason. He had a knee problem and rosters are set barring injury you do not make a squad this time of year. So no real sign there. He is a better option then bringing in buster davis only guy you could sign who would know offense. You bring him in after next week he has two weeks to learn some offense. He is currently practicing full go and running all routes knee does not sound like a problem to me. Lets not attack character. if I had to go out and sign someone it would be TO.

What does running routes mean?
I can run a route. Am I in consideration?
If he is back to his normal self and showing no signs of injury then he can probably play in the NFL. I just don’t think whatever he brings to the table trumps the other stuff he brings along with it.
I am talking running full speed practices. Running a route the speed and precision that it is suppose to have. Your under valueing how much a healthy knee is needed for that. Let me tear your acl and see if you can run a full speed route with precision and do it as fast as a nfl wide out after healing in half the time because of stem cell treatment.

I am just asking what type of routes he is running
Is he going full speed. Is he out there with 2 other guys just going through the motions? It is a valid question.
In the end…the second part of my statement should clear it up.
If he is back to his normal self and showing no signs of injury then he can probably play in the NFL. I just don’t think whatever he brings to the table trumps the other stuff he brings along with it.
Do you truly believe Owens would put him self in position to allow his body to fail him? He’s a lot of things, but apt to do that – I think not.

He is one of the best WR’s in the history of the NFL, so IF he is ever healthy this year he would be an asset to this team. Wow. Help at reciver.
I agree Kamar Aiken or Buster Davis these guys know are system and where they fit in it. I think that would help them step in and be comfortable quickly. As far as T.O is concerned if it comes to that I guess alot depends on where he is with his knee.
Elevate Kamar Aiken from the PS and send David Nelson down the sidelines
Aiken looked awfully good in the preseason. Sure that’s the preseason, but this is a semi-emergency. It’s time to see what the kid can do. Ditto with sending David Nelson deep. Everyone keeps saying he’s not fast enough, but if you check his time in the 40 at the combine was actually faster than Stevie Johnson’s. I am not suggesting at all that Gailey take Nelson out of the slot altogether, but Chan has said many times that he values versatility in his WR’s and wants them to be able to run every route on the field. Now is the time to see how versatile Nelson can be.
T.O.
When will T.O. be ready to come back? Has he finished rehabbing?
I would welcome him back with open arms. He was not a problem while here before. And he was one of the first people to publicly back Fitz while he was here. Seems like he could be a good solution (if he doesn’t want too much $) for the rest of this season.
He is supposedly all healthy. Running all routes and practicing stateside.

Buster Davis
This makes the most short term sense to me as well. He has some speed and is at least fairly familiar with the offense having been a late preseason cut. And they really don’t need him to do anything complicated. Mostly just be a viable option on deep passes a few times a game. If he actually makes some deep catches that’s a huge bonus.
Like others, I would rather see K. Aiken than Buster Davis.

I dont think TO or Moss is a good idea… why cant we use CJ Spiller in the same type of role we planned on using Roscoe Parrish?
Nelson is like 6’5", why cant he be a deep threat and move CJ to Roscoe’s role? To be a deep threat he does not have to be the fastest guy out there, he just has to run down the field and win 1×1 jump ball situations right? My vote is Steve #1, Nelson #2 and CJ in the slot.

I would think Spiller could learn how to run a couple deep routes correctly, though I think one of the hardest things about being a WR is learning how to catch the ball looking back over your shoulder while running flat out.

I've never understood that....
hardest things about being a WR is learning how to catch the ball looking back over your shoulder while running flat out.
either you can catch the ball or you can’t.
I know, If your running flat out uncontrolled sprint, it’s hard enough making sure you keep your balance in the process, but darn it, some people can fun flat out, chew bubble gum, AND make the catch…
It’s even more fun if it’s overthrown a bit and you have to dive for it, unlike our “speed” guy of the last few years….
Optimistic??? Of course I am!! I'm a Bills fan, and as of right now, we are undefeated on the regular season!!!
Things are truly looking up!!!
Well, it certainly is quite a bit easier to catch a lofted pass from 10 yds away in the flat when you’re trotting, or catching a quick slant where it’s much easier to see because you’re running almost parallel to the line of scrimmage, but being able to catch the ball when it’s coming from behind you is indeed a whole different eye-hand-coordination skill.
It’s like the difference between catching a baseball that’s hit off to the side a bit and in front of you vs. one that’s hit straight back over your head.

I'd be interested to see
David Nelson dealing with jamming at the LOS, and then working down the field against a safety and corner.
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun
Risky? Yes. Good option? Yes.
Moss would be able to take the top off the coverage, which we need. If he interviewed very well I would bring him on board. His skill set is what the doctor ordered.
too one-dimensional
i love Moss and think he’s one of the greatest deep threats to ever play the game, but he does not run the underneath routes nearly well enough (or inspired enough) to fit into the offense. this spread offense thrives on a defense not knowing where the ball is going on any given situation and with Moss they could always rule out him never getting the ball thrown his way when running a shorter route. i saw at least 4 different players run a screen yesterday, and i’m pretty sure every skill player on the team has count at least one so far…really can’t see Moss signing up for that.
His one dimension
is the dimension we need. We need a deep threat to draw safety help. I could live with Moss running only deep routes and opening up the intermediate routes for Stevie and our other receivers. If he acts up, we cut him.
A motivated Randy Moss is an awesome weapon. Clearly “motivated” is the key word.

Getting Randy Moss would certainly be interesting.
Imagine the “motivation” he’d have returning to Foxborough as a Bill.
If I had to say realistically, Kamar Aiken does have good speed so he might be called up. Buster Davis also sounds like he could be a realistic option if we release Ruvell Martin.
by NordicBillsfan on Oct 10, 2011 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions
one-dimensional is all we need
in a deep threat WR. All he has to do is keep the secondary honest. and he does that. That’s all lee did and stevie tore it up b/c of lee’s ability to go deep, NOT run underneath routes and screens, etc. we only let go of lee b/c we wanted to groom our younger speedsters, of which BOTH are injured for the foreseeable future. say what you want but we NEED a one-dimensional burner. Besides, Moss can also run a deep post as well. if we got Moss, defenses would crap on themselves b/c we’re already putting up 30+ without a deep threat. Imagine that.

I prefer Moss over T.O. too man. At least he doesn’t drop as much passes.
T.O.
It’s not happening, but man, with the guys that are now gone, he would fit that #2 deep threat spot perfectly! Stevie hasn’t done much the past couple weeks, and TO would only help his production IMO. I understand the concern but...
I would say take a step back for a moment. The Bills still have Johnson, Nelson, Roosevelt and Martin. But don’t forget Brad Smith who may be listed as QB but can fill in as WR. He may not usually be used in that role, but he has the speed to be a deep threat. The Bills also have Spiller who IMO could be more productive as a deep threat than a slot. What he may lack in height from a typical WR, he makes up for with his speed. I was also thinking the Bills should start working Chandler into the spread formation more. It would either create a huge mismatch against a CB or at a minimum, pulls a LB out of the middle of the field which could help the Bills run game. Don’t hit the panic button yet folks. Besides, do we really want to hurt depth at other positions just to fill a temporary gap as Jones recovers?

All that talk about roster space management when the Bills signed Brad Smith ought to pay off here. He’s listed as a WR/QB. that’s what I was thinking although Gailey’s recent comments about Spiller make me wonder. When Gailey says “odd man out”, you gotta believe he’s having trouble getting on the field. We were thin at WR before Gailey said that.
I would have expected Gailey to say something like, “We have plans for CJ, maybe not conventional plans, but plans”. He obviously didn’t say anything close.

This team is making me skeptical of my skepticism- putting the crow in the oven to slow roast.
Let me clarify a little bit!!
In the preseason he looked pretty good then the season started and he was injured the first week. So I don’t think it’s fair to judge him based on him only playing in 2 games. I just know that when healthy the opposing D has to account for him and that would open things up for both Stevie and Nelson. Plus you have the added benefit of him being here and knowing somewhat of what Gailey is running. Don’t gene wrong though I know Nix would never dream of parting ways with a draft pick but given the other options I would prefer Evans over them. Ideally I would hope Aiken is ready to step-up but that remains to be seen.

Even before the injuries... there has been a lack of talent at WR
It’s the reason why Cincy was able to play press man against us and shut us down. It is the same reason we didn’t attempt a pass longer than 15 yards yesterday. And it will be the reason we struggle mightily against the Jets when we play them.
There is a distinct lack of athletic ability in our WR corp right now. Gailey can only do so much smoke and mirror type stuff, and that stuff is far more effective against zone than man coverage
I honestly don't know why...
Ruvell Martin was favored over Kamar Aiken… probably because he’s a veteran? I mean, the guy is absolutely useless on the football field, I can’t remember the Bills ever putting a worse receiver out on the field than Ruvell Martin. That was just a big FAIL on Nix’s part. And why on earth hasn’t Chan the Man figured out a way to split out CJ Spiller? That would be a pre-snap nightmare for a defense and personnel-wise. You can motion him in and out of the backfield to match him up on LBs, run quick screens to press the LOS, etc. Gailey will figure something out; he always seems to, unlike George Edwards who’s defense can’t get a stop without forcing a turnover.

Martin’s benefit to the team in on ST. He’s actually performed good-to-well on coverage. But that doesn’t help them at WR.

good-to-well
should be “well-to-very well”

special teams
when they brought martin back after roscoe went down, a lot of folks were wondering why he got the nod over roosevelt and i believe BG (or chan… is it a bad thing i get them confused sometimes?) said it was because martin was solid on special teams whereas roosevelt wasn’t. it’s likely fair to assume the same goes for aiken.
also, from what limited understanding i have of the way our offense works, WR’s are expected to be able to run all routes from all positions on the field and know what routes to run when the D shows different things. aiken may not have that understanding yet as he’s still a noob.
T.O.
Buddy Nix read this please just bring TO in for a day or two and have the coaches watch him run some routes and catch passes!?! NO harm in that. Deep threat here we come!! Please we need a deep threat. Defenses are just jumping everything short. TO TO TO TO
Yup
been mentioned above
but see this:

This team is making me skeptical of my skepticism- putting the crow in the oven to slow roast.
What about Brad smith and CJ
Or having more of a Pistol look to the offense and keep both backs in, but line one up wide or both in the backfield, or both wide. I think they have the talent on the 53 man right now to do this without adding a body. Stevie, Nelson, Chandler, Fitzy, CJ, Freddie, and the five lineman. Keep that unit out there, subbing brad smith and Naaman in for the WR’s. Freddie and CJ provide the speed out of the slot that Roscoe would of provided.
Help in the WR position......
I say no way to T.O. or Moss, they are a punch of divas that will only cause friction in the huddle…right now we are playing like a team and dont need those two bringing us down. Signing Hank Baskett, Antonio Bryant, Greg Lewis or Paul Hubbard wouldnt hurt and move Spiller outside, his speed will be useful down the field.
I love the idea of Bryant or maybe somebody like him. We certainly need somebody else to help us spread the field. When Jones left yesterday we lost the ability to spread the field because Johnson was getting covered very well. We will need to adjust somehow. If they can fit Spiller into that role to force coverage over the top to open up the middle of the field for Stevie and Martin that would be fantastic. But, we are going to have to do something.

Bring up Aiken and/or re sign Buster Davis
DONT make a splash. I dont want to here about the signing of a old washed up receiver moss or owens. If we bring up Aiken he could be that deep threat, or re signing buster davis because he is fast receiver. Personally i like Aiken more i think he has more upside but there is NO reason to sign moss/owens or anyone else. Get someone in who knows the offense and will be okay ending up with one catch a game cause TO wont.
Fitzmagic
We need someone
Three points:
1) T.O is not my first point, but else is out there? In my opinion he is the best option. Buster davis?…please
2) I’m almost 99% sure Moss won’t be coming back
3) I think with our team of late round/undrafted players a couple of “has beens” would fit perfectly
bottom of the line, we need someone if we stay ahead in our division
we need a burner....does a old WR with a bad knee sound like a burner to you?
What the hell happened in Cincy???? It looked like the Bills bodies made the flight, but they left their souls to party on the Whagon Blaster.

Andre Reed – I heard he wants to secure his spot in the Hall of Fame.

I say Eric Moulds
He still needs those 5 yards to get in the 10,000s.

Chris Carter
All he does is catch TD’s.

TO? Really?
The guy just OD’d on pills. You really think he’s who we want to bring on the team at this point??
http://www.tmz.com/2011/10/10/terrell-owens-pill-overdose-prescription-medication-hospital/#.TpN3urK9a8M
“As we first reported, Owens was transported by ambulance to an L.A. hospital Thursday night. Cops were also dispatched to investigate — and spoke with T.O. at the hospital.”
I would expect...
because the Bills are unerringly committed to players they know, that Aiken will get the call up, and Wheatley, with T Mac coming back, to get the axe.
Along those lines, remember too, after the Giant game (who have no receivers left to speak of), we have the bye for McGee and hopefully, Williams to get better… Wheatley is the odd man out regardless of who we bring in…
That said however, there is a chance it’s Buster back in the fold instead. Remember, Aiken went to the PS before Naaman did, but Roosy got the call first to the bigs… That hints to me, that Chix sees more potential in Aiken, but know he needs to develop for a while…
Now… since we’re playing armchair GM with names like TO and Moss (growing), I’d like to throw in my own 2 cents….
Trade next years draft, yeah, all of it, for Megatron, or his more evil twin, AJ Green…
Optimistic??? Of course I am!! I'm a Bills fan, and as of right now, we are undefeated on the regular season!!!
Things are truly looking up!!!

Ha-Ha! Nice Idea!
Trade next years draft, yeah, all of it, for Megatron, or his more evil twin, AJ Green…
but neither the Lions or the Bengals would go for it. Well, maybe the Bengals would. You could do some serious re-building with double the draft picks.

Good thing we have Smith
Looks like Smith will be getting more playing time, isn’t this why we signed him? A multi-purpose athlete, yeah baby!
We can use Spiller in the slot more often and alternate Nelson/Roosevelt on the outside. With Jackson and Spiller as great receiving options and the possibility of using Smith, I think we’ll be fine.
The absolute last thing we need around here is something that destroys the team unity!!! Me-ball guys STAY AWAY!!
Rebuilding a team properly takes time and patience

Bring in anyone :)
Heck it seems as though Chan can toss anyone into this system. As long as they are capable of running good routes.
