Ask a Giants fan
Hello Buffalo Bills fans! My name's Will, and I'm the unofficial representative of BBV and internet Giant Fans.
First the mandatory surprise about the Bills triumphs so far. I mean this with complete sincerity when I say Bills fans are the best football fans, always filling out the stadium and cheering when there's been little to cheer. I hope that the Bills can win every game they play after this Sunday.
Ask any and all questions about the New York Football Giants you have here and I and many other BBVers will do our best to answer them. Feel free to come over to BBV too.
Random Stats that mean nothing on Sunday:
The Bills have a 6-4 regular season record vs the Giants with a 0-1 post season record.
Chan Gailey is 3-1 vs the Giants, in his two year stint with the Cowboys.
Tom Coughlin is 2-2 vs the Bills in the Regular season, and 1-0 in the playoffs, including his time with Jaguars.
Eli Manning is 1-0 vs the bills, even though he sucked real bad that game.
Ryan Fitzpatrick has never played the Giants.

……. but with injuries to your line and RBs, do you think the Giants can stick it into some holes?

No idea man
our O-line has been piss poor. Diehl in particular has been awful. Not sure about the status of our C and RG. Snee (the RG) had a concussion and was hospitalized so I highly doubt he’ll be playing, haven’t heard much about Baas.
Also don’t know about Jacobs.

soooo
the giants seem to be up and down. when they are up, they are a scary team. when down, well, they can lose to the likes of seattle. what do you see as the key to victory this sunday for the g-men? and do the bills have much to worry about from the giants fanbase? i dont think i have any knowledge as to how ‘rabid’ you guys are. thanks
Hi, I'm Jim Kelly for the Mancuso Family of Dealerships.
Pretty much
The Giants have the capability to be awesome – anywhere. They also have the capability to suck real bad – anywhere.
The key to the game is keeping the turnovers down, and making sure batted passes don’t go into the Bill’s defenders hands. Last year we had a big problem with tipped balls almost always being intercepted instead of falling harmlessly, and the Bills seem to be awesome at the tip drill.

Seattle wouldn’t be different than any other stadium noise wise if they didn’t design the stadium to increase noise levels.
But I’m biased, the only time I’ve been in MSG was during a Devils-Rangers game where we (the Devils) got out to a 3-0 lead :P

1. Is Aaron Ross still the starter and is he still the man to target in the secondary?
2. How have your linebackers played this year?
3. We all know how good your DEs are at generating pressure, probably the best in the business, but does the pass rush come from the interior as well?
4. How often do the Giants use the tight end since Kevin Boss left?
5. Im in a minority of non-Giants fans who respects Eli Manning as one of the better QBs in the NFL. Are Giants fans up or down on him right now?
6. Do the Bills have to worry more about your running game or passing game?
Thanks for coming over and answering questions, much appreciated.
This even grates my passive cheese - LeClaire Bill
1) Yes he is still starting, and he’s actually turned his play around. Not pro bowl level but decent.
2) They’ve played well. Boley’s finally been playing like the player we thought we were going to get when he signed in 09. With Goff out for the season, we have a difference in the base and nickel defenses. In the base 4-3, we have rookie Greg Jones play MLB. He’s been ok there. In our nickel package, we have our other Rookie Jacquain Williams, who’s also our fastest linebacker. Williams has been playing much more than Jones due to the offenses we’ve faced. He’s picked up tons of sacks. Our SLB is Kiwanuka. I like him there because it puts the best players on the field (with Osi and JPP at DE). On passing downs he goes back to the line and plays DE and DT.
3) I’ll defer this to someone else who watches the film more, but not really (so far). On passing downs, we’ll replace one or sometimes even both DTs with DEs. I like it as a change of pace, but sometimes it gets overused imo.
4) Funny you ask this. I love the Bossman, but his role in the passing game was really overstated. Last year he only caught 35 passes, and dropped tons. Where we miss him most is his run defense, which is top notch. Ballard has been a suitable replacement in the pass game with 10 receptions and 2 tds. Ironically, he was known as a blocking TE, which has been pretty meh so far. Definitely a big surprise at his receiving success.
5) You’re awesome in my book. New York fans are fickle. If he’s winning the game, he’s teh bestest evar, when the Giants lose, he’s the over rated goofy looking brother. No middleground.
I love him and Eli is far from the Giant’s problems.
6) lol worry about our running game. We’ve averaged less than 4 ypc rushing, and something like 80 yards per game. Our o-line’s been pretty terrible, and not opening up running lanes. Until the last game, it’s been decent enough in pass protection, but last week they were horrible in all aspects. I wouldn’t be surprised if your (as I understand) anemic pass rush finally found what to do.

I wouldn’t be surprised if your (as I understand) anemic pass rush finally found what to do.
We have some players seeing the field and are growing as a unit getting good push up the middle and disrupting the play on the inside edge, coupled with blitz packages we introduced last week that pressured Vick into 4 picks, I think we might just show up against the Giants, and if they aren’t doing well, it might be a long day for Eli & Co

Our schemes were painfully vanilla the first three weeks. In the last two, they’ve dialed up the pressure and the results have been for the most part positive. I wouldn’t be surprised if Eli is under at least a little pressure this weekend.

thank you sir!
great answers, appreciated.
number 6 kind of makes me sad because I really loved those Brandon Jacobs centered Giants teams where you have a guy as big as a defensive end bowling over guys after Madison Hedgecock plowed the road for him. Im not complaining this Sunday obviously !
Interesting on Kevin Boss, I guess the impression was that he was a major part of the offense as a receiver, definitely changes things knowing that he really wasnt that big of an Eli target.
This even grates my passive cheese - LeClaire Bill
yea we all love when Big Boy is plowing guys over
unfortunately there’s been no holes to do so so far this season. add to that that we’ve got a rookie fullback still learning his way, those holes are unfortunately smaller.
well, fortunately for you. :)
yeah, basically TE’s can be interchangeable in a tom coughlin offense. he’d rather they stay in and block anyway. i’d even venture to say Shockey prolly lost about 10 catches a year under this offense, and it was centered around him(and Plax)
moreso than losing the catches, we’re losing the blocking ability of the Bossman. btw, is poz short for posluzny? how do y’all feel about losing him this offseason? and what are your linebackers looking like w/o him?

Yeah
Poz had his Nick for Pozluzny, he was a bit cut when he went, however the play of Barnett has likely softened the blow – right Poz ??
Our LBs are looking decent / respectable overall – which is a great improvement over recent years ! We especially look solid on the inside. Outside, not too bad, but not as good as inside.
#99 Mount Doom Dareus
For number 3
Its situational. Most of the time, you can see them trying to take on a couple blockers or at least disrupt the offensive tackles and let Pierre-Paul and Osi go buckwild.
There will be some times where JPP and a few others will stunt with the DTs. Both Canty and Joseph are very good at getting penetration, and both are VERY good run defenders. Where we struggle in run defense is on the edges. Usually, JPP will get trapped inside to allow the edge on his side, or Osi will overshoot his edge and lose contain. Add that to the inability of our LBs to help come down and seal those edges and come off blocks, and that’s why our run D struggles.
Sorry I went off topic, but yes, you can count on our interior DL getting pressure.

Bad question Poz.
6. Do the Bills have to worry more about your running game or passing game?
Thanks for coming over and answering questions, much appreciated
The way we have been giving up yards on the edge, Bradshaw could rack up 150+ yards no prob.
The way we have been getting picks, Eli could gift wrap 4 for a Bills win ala Brady and Vick.
That question was a no brainer.

is it?
That question was a no brainer.
Boy, I dont think so.
We’ve given up 1417 yards with 10 touchdowns through the air in 5 games and 692 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground.
You take away week 1 when Matt Cassel was absolutely owned and those numbers look even worse. Our defense has given up the following to passers after Cassel:
323 yards to Jason Campbell!
387 yards to Tom Brady
287 yards to Andy friggin Dalton!
315 yards to Mike Vick
Given the Giants offensive line problems in run blocking and our inability to stop passers from throwing all over us and your banking on quite a bit for picks. You toss in Eli Manning is a Super Bowl winner who has Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham to throw to and I think its a great question
This even grates my passive cheese - LeClaire Bill
We’ve given up 1417 yards with 10 touchdowns through the air in 5 games and 692 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground.
That’s almost 300 yds passing a game and almost 140 yds on the ground a game.
BUT……
The KC game skews the stats abit, because they got behind so quickly, so there is more passing yards than rushing.
Pretty much 90% of the big runs were on the edge, Bradshaw is an edge runner, Jacobs, the hammer between the tackles probably won’t even play, so more carries for Bradshaw to exploit our lousy edge defense in the run game.
We get picks, Eli likes to throw picks. If Brady and QB Dog Killer can throw 4 picks in a game, so can Eli.
Bradshaw is the bigger threat, especially with McGee coming back.

Actually you have the RB's backwards
While it would seem that the 265lb Jacobs would be the between-the-tackles runner, he actually does most of his damage running outside. This gets him away from the LOS clutter that tends to trip him up, while letting him keep his momentum and give DB’s nightmares.
Bradshaw, on the other hand, is better between the tackles because of his compact build, surprising strength, agility, and determined running style.
The wildcards here being DJ Ware and Da’Rel Scott. Ware is a versatile runner who runs hard and has soft hands. Scott is a 215lb speed freak (). However, he hasn’t played yet. Is this the week they give him a shot? No clue.
Now, if whether Eli throws picks or not remains to be seen. IMO, after last game, he will go back to being as careful with the ball as he was against Philly.
Question of my own: How much has Buffalo relied on blitzes? (Eli has been deadly against them).
How much has Buffalo relied on blitzes?
Not much, last week was the first time this season, they upped the blitzing, before last week. we seemed mostly content with ruahing 3 and sitting back in coverage.

Eli's INT's last week were not what they appear on the stat sheet
INT # 1: A horrible first half duck that was totally on Eli
INT # 2: 90 or so seconds left, threw to an open Victor Cruz from about the 10 or 11 in the Seattle red zone. Cruz is running a quick inside slant from the slot and slips on his cut. It’s a timing pass, Cruz is open, slips after the ball is in the air, can’t quite reach the ball, tries to bat it to catch it. Bad idea. This is at the 6 yard line in a crowded space. INT. Pick 6. Game over. But the pass from Eli was a quick timing read and Cruz was open when the ball was released.
INT #3: About 30 seconds left, Giants now down 11 after the pick 6 from INT # 2. Eli throws up a prayer from his own 25 or so. INT, the defense is playing deep with back to prevent a big play.
In those situations, I put only the first INT on Eli. He has been much much more careful about forcing the ball this year, taking some more sacks instead. But when a young hot player bats up a ball in traffic inside the 10 in the red zone after slipping on his route, what are you gonna do?
@Patricia_Traina Under TC, the Giants are 53-24 when they rush for 100+ yards and 15-25 when they don't.

The Running game
I’ve had Bradshaw on my fantasy team the past two years and it seems he’s still running the ball well but just having his touches a bit limited. I like Jacobs in short yardage, and I understand resting Bradshaw a series here or there, but do Giants fans think Jacobs takes too many carries from Bradshaw? He only gets half the touches Bradshaw does but Ahmad averages a full yard more per carry behind the same line and is obviously a bigger threat for big plays out of the backfield.

these season has a bit of a bizarro world feel to it.
AB n BJ have always kept each other fresh, that aloud them to gash Ds late in games. This yr they’re not getting that many carries due to the poor line play…. If the oline ever gets it together again it would be alot more of BJ softening up ( sorry) the D for AB to exploit later.

AB’s 80 yard run saved us from losing that game at Buffalo in 2007. It is the victory in this game that helped securing a post season spot for us that year which led us to winning the superbowl.

AB’s run was huge but they were winning the game when it happend. It took a lot to win that game… Jacobs’ big TD runs, Toomer’s 100 yards receiving and a couple defensive TDs. Loved every minute of that game, even sitting though that rain/snow.

I find this blog (I have been to this page only) as very civilized and educated. I guess I have been used to some of the Eagles and Cowboys fans.
Good job Buffalo Bills fans.
Let's Go Giants!
May I add that us Giants fans usually root for you guys, considering you're in the same
division as the Jest and Patsies.

BBI – I see your inputs a lot over at MTD.
Steve Johnson has a groin injury that is reducing his usual shifty route-running. No word yet this week on how it is feeling.

The next discovered anything in the sky must be named “Obiblion.”
As a matter of fact, my kids enjoy writing fiction stories and they’re always trying to come up with place names. Next time they ask me for a suggestion, “Obiblion” it is.

Jeez, by the time I get here all the other BBV's have answered all the questions
Guess I’ll go chuck some rocks or something.
@Patricia_Traina Under TC, the Giants are 53-24 when they rush for 100+ yards and 15-25 when they don't.
hahahahahahhaaha
Is Victor Cruz better than Mario Manningham? There is one for ya
This even grates my passive cheese - LeClaire Bill
not yet, but he could get there
They’re both similar in that they both have excellent elusiveness after the catch to create a big play with YAC.
Manningham’s trouble seems to be his ability to make the same reads of the defense so that he runs the route Eli expects. It happens a fair amount that Eli throws the ball to a spot where he expects MM to be, but MM cuts in another direction. This is because the offense has built into it hot reads based on the defense. MM just doesn’t see things consistently the way Eli sees them.
That said, MM can go into beast mode any time.
Cruz is still learning and is a wild ride of rookie type mistakes and awesome potential. True, he’s not a true rookie but he was on IR last year for his rookie season so he may as well be one.
Giants fans are falling in love with Cruz but MM caught for 900 yards last year and almost all of his TD’s are on big plays. So they’re both pretty potent weapons. Cruz may have a slight edge catching in traffic but both can get better running routes.
How'd I do? :-)
@Patricia_Traina Under TC, the Giants are 53-24 when they rush for 100+ yards and 15-25 when they don't.
well I have Manningham on my fantasy team so tell him he can have this week off but after this I want to see Calvin Johnson type numbers; who coincidentally is also on my fantasy team (along with Larry Fitzgerald). Yes I’m deep at WR but crap at QB and RB.

If I had an avatar
It would be of the sign on the apartment building in the movie Office Space. It was my inspiration :)
I usually do this on these threads. Here's two "x-factors" to the game
For the Bills: Chris Hairston, your OT. If he plays well, your offense should be okay. I think its necessary that he plays well, though, because if he isn’t up to snuff, he is playing up against Osi Umenyiora (who has 4 sacks in 2 games) or Jason Pierre-Paul (7 sacks this year). Both are playing out of their minds, right now, so I’d expect you guys to be in max protect for some time. Make sure you have someone chip whoever Hairston is on. Our defense is keyed by the pass rush. Take that away, and its curtains for us.
For the Giants: Jacquain Williams, our nickel LB. He’s a rookie, and most people don’t know him, but he’s been our most productive draft pick thus far. He comes in more often than not and has gotten a ton of snaps. He’s our fastest linebacker and has been able to run with Michael Vick and has been able to cover receivers in the slot. He is going to be our biggest weapon against Fred Jackson. If he’s on his game, he has an outside chance to help limit the damage.

good points BBI
altho i’d actually suggest Jones may be more important than Williams this week. if he’s in there on run downs, his nose for the runner may be of utmost importance. this may be his coming out party – if he’s out there.

I think this point will be one to watch during the game.
so I’d expect you guys to be in max protect for some time. Make sure you have someone chip whoever Hairston is on.
We usually don’t help the tackles much, even against elite pass-rushers. This will be an interesting battle to watch during the game for sure.
Gailey will use chips to help out the Tackles, but generally he just uses screens and draws to help slow down an intense pass-rush, similar to the Philly game. We may go a little more 1 TE sets this week though with our thinned out WR corp, but I wouldn’t expect it.
"I got no problem with 7-9 coming off of 4-12 as long as I don't buy a couch there, you got to keep moving" - Mike Schoop
Funny thing I just read on NFL.com
Bucky Brooks has an X-Factor article and he called Demetrius Bell an X-Factor this week, totally oblivious to Bell being hurt and not practicing for two weeks. Didn’t even mention an injury, the dude has no business as a journo. Hairston was good last week, didn’t hear his name called at all and although I didn’t specifically notice it I’m sure Philly put Babin over there to try and exploit him.

Question:
Does Eli Manning throw rocks at airplanes?
Wish he had that strong of an arm? He does have a few TD’s this year over 20 yards. I rather he throw TD’s. Does Fitz throw at airplanes?
Hey
How has the Giants secondary play been so far? Especially safeties, we didn’t take any shots down field last week due to the Eagles secondary, seeing if there is a chance of it this week.

I actually just did a fan post on this at BBV.
@Patricia_Traina Under TC, the Giants are 53-24 when they rush for 100+ yards and 15-25 when they don't.
wildcat
Bills like to run the wildcat in short yardage, how have the Giants fared versus this formation in the past?
I would equate the wildcat to facing Vick everytime
Except Vick>Wildcat
And considering how often they see him and how they manhandled him 3 weeks ago, I don’t see the wildcat as something the Giants will fear.
They just need to be prepared when they see it.

Bills have used Wildcat not as a big-play weapon but to keep the chains moving. So far, Brad Smith has been pretty good at picking up 3rd and short out of the Wildcat.
