The Mods Pick'em....Does Anyone Care?

I have always like the weekly Mods Pick'em, and I appreciate WABillsfan taking the time and effort to put it together every week.  When it first started, the Mods Pick'em was much more popular and generated a lot more comments.  The comments this year have been few and far between, even by the Mods making the picks. The lack of interest has made me wonder if it is worth keeping this series going.   I have a few ideas on how to make it more interesting.  Or, maybe you would rather just kill it altogether?   A poll to gauge reader opinion is after the jump.

Star-divide

I think one of the biggest reasons we don't see many comments is that many of our top Mods are missing from this series.....yes, Brian, Matt, Der Jaeger, sireric....I'm talking to you guys.  I know you are busy and work hard to give us tons of great content.  But given your knowledge of the teams in NFL, would it really take you more than 10-15 minutes to make these picks?  Personally, I would rather you cut one article a week and participate in the Mods Pick'em.  I think we have the room to add you guys, but if the total number of Mods in this series is an issue, I would be willing to give my spot to one of you and continue to post my picks in the comments section.

Next idea.  I'm guessing that just listing who picked which teams isn't very interesting to the majority of our readers.  And, it doesn't lead to much debate or discussion.  I suggest requiring the Mods to include with their picks a minimum of three reason per game why they picked the team they did.  That would give us something to debate and would be much more interesting, IMHO.

Finally, how about we add elimination picks to this series?  For those of you who don't know how that works.  Each week, you pick one team as your lock to win.  You can only use a team once.  If your pick loses, you are eliminated.  Last man standing wins, and then we start over.

So what do you think?  Vote in the poll and leave your comments below.  And, don't forget to "rec" this if you want to keep it from getting buried long enough to get a significant number of votes.

Poll
What should we do with the Mods Pickem series?
A - Nothing...quit complaining....things are fine the way they are
7 votes
B - Tell Brian and Co to man up....even if it cost us one article
17 votes
C - Add the 3 reason rule....picks alone are boring
11 votes
D - Add the elimination picks to the series
2 votes
E - B, C, and D
17 votes
F - Bury it now....This series died long ago

Definitely agree

I feel like it lost some luster when a few of the old regulars stopped visiting as much. But I do love reading the articles each week. I think it could be a nice weekly feature with some changes, like the ones you mentioned.

I think this is a great weekly series, and I would be more than willing to see fewer articles during the week when there really isn’t much going on. I’m never one for just having content to say you have content.

I voted E, but I don’t necessarily think all three options are necessary, but there wasn’t an other or a B&D option.

Oh, sorry, this is what I think would really help increase the discussion on these posts: Post it on Friday or early Saturday. I never post on this if it isn’t posted until Sunday, because I’m rarely in front of my computer on Sunday, and I’m not likely to go back and look at this after all the games are played.

So I’d much rather see this posted on Friday or very early on Saturday.

Good suggestion.....I agree completely

I’m not sure when the deadline is for submitting picks or how long WABillsfan needs to get things together. I usually submit my picks on Friday afternoon, but I could easily get them in by Wed afternoon if we wanted to go with a Friday posting date. I wouldn’t want to go earlier than Wed because I like to see who is injured.

It is a nice feature. I don’t usually comment. To me it is a competition between those listed. I always look at it.

I would like to add these views.

  • Any comment I would make would not affect the choices made. For example I think Atlanta plays sub-par outside a dome, but some pick them to win a road game. If I posted that, and someone wanted to use that to change their mind it is too late since the post is final(?).
  • We are Bills fans and are more likely to not be overly in tune with other games outside of hoping NE/NYJ/MIA get crushed.
  • If you want more involvement with the fan base then it would have to be more interactive. Possibly along these lines:
1.) A poll asking which author/mod is going to win each week.
2.) A weekly guest blogger adding his picks, then keep a running total for all the guest bloggers in sum.
3.) A FanPost with a poll for each game for all Rumblers to choose, then post those in the group. Not sure how many polls in one FanPost, and it would need a deadline [5 PM Friday?] too.

I read all the Articles/FanPosts/FanShots (I even look at the pictures) usually the day they’re posted. The “pick-em” is a nice change of pace.

Some very good ideas here

1. I like this idea. It should be pretty easy to add a poll to the post. Of course, I don’t do the leg work, so maybe WABillsfan will weigh in soon?

2. Good idea, but sounds to me like a nightmare to organize. Who gets to be the guest blogger. How are they picked? Who keeps track?

3. I like this idea as well. This would require a separate post with a poll for each game. Can you have more than one poll in a post? Are you up for it? If not, anyone else?

Aw, Joe.....you're just mad you're losing to me!

I don’t think you can have more than one poll per post. Throwing up, so to speak, 16 fanposts per week would drive everyone else’s fanposts off the front page. You could pick 2 or 3 of the best matchups and do fanposts for each—that wouldn’t push as much content off the front page. Then eveyrone could put their pick in via the poll for each of those 2 or 3 games.

I wasn't sure I was going to like the white helmets but seeing them in the practice footage, I've got to say that I love the look.

Yes I am!!!!!!

But you’re still within striking distance….so don’t get cocky :-)

Yeah, 16 fan posts wouldn’t work….stuff gets buried around here fast enough. To bad we are limited to one poll in each post.

By the way, I’m heading to Vegas this weekend….will say Hi to hoop girl for you ;-)

Who gets to be the guest blogger? How are they picked? Who keeps track?

Well that would be up to you guys. Possible the blogger that most correctly guessed the previous week Bills final score (stetzweb had NYG 30-24). Maybe someone that wrote a FanPost that received 15+ rec’s. Put names in a hat?

Can you have more than one poll in a post? Are you up for it? If not, anyone else?

As I just found out no. I would be willing to help if needed.

I care Joe! I’m just a lousy contributor or oh…the last year or so. Have been busy, and just can’t keep up with this site.

I won the first time around, and finished an e’er so close 2nd last year. Am anxious to take back my title!!

To everyone who took the time to post their thoughts, thanks, there will be some changes coming this friday

If I am not dead in a ditch somewhere after this week. For those who voted against continuing the series, just a bit of warning. This thing is like Michael Myers, it keeps getting back up even when you think its dead.
