Help Us Help You, Buffalo Rumblings Readers
Since the 4-2 Buffalo Bills are at their bye week and assessing themselves following their hot start, we figured that while we assess the team from afar here for the next couple of weeks, we'd let everyone assess Buffalo Rumblings while we're all in an assessing state of mind.
Basically, this is going to be an open thread for everyone to discuss the state of our fair blog. Like something that we've been doing? Tell us about it. Have a blog-specific gripe? Let us know. Want to see an aspect of the team covered that you think we're missing? Point us in the right direction.
No topic of conversation is off the table. We're looking for any and all feedback about Buffalo Rumblings that you're willing to provide as we strive to get better and become more useful and entertaining for our readers. After the jump, I'll outline a few ways that you can keep track of Rumblings - we've had a lot of emails on that topic recently - but if you're cool on that front, head on in after the jump and get chatting. I'll be around to bounce ideas and field questions all evening (but only during Batman: Arkham City cutscenes; hence the massive delays).
Real quick: lately, I've gotten a bunch of emails from readers asking how best to stay abreast of what's going on at Buffalo Rumblings. Starting today, here's what you need to know:
The vast majority of readers are coming straight to BuffaloRumblings.com, whether that by in a simple Internet browser or via the SB Nation iPhone app. Both are encouraged, obviously.
Buffalo Rumblings is on Twitter; if you use Twitter, you can find us @BuffRumblings. That account has served mostly as a feed linking back to our work here, but for our 3,391 current followers, we're going to try to have at least one Twitter-specific discussion per day solely through that medium. Get ready, #BillsMafia.
Buffalo Rumblings is also on Facebook; you can find us right here. Just like with the Twitter account, we're going to start having at least one Facebook-centric discussion per day there. If you're on Facebook, give us a "Like" and we'll start sending you stories and discussion topics to share with your friends.

Hoping for a breakdown of the special teams unit
I know since Bruce returned to coach the unit after April left he got some flack but this year they seem to be playing pretty excellently in coverage while Moorman is booting it like he is 3 years younger. I’d be interested in a Rumblings assessment at the bye break.

Past players
For some reason, I like an update of past Bills still in the league and how they are doing. I guess I would like to know that Whitner is lousy in SF, Maybin has like 3 sacks for the Jets, and Poz regrets leaving us.

POZ seems to be doing well
Whitner has made little impact and has been soundly outplayed by Wilson. Last time I checked, Poz trails Barnett in tackles by 3-5 tackles. As for Maybin, who cares?

I think it's got...
…a sort of campy vibe to it that I’m digging. I say keep it.
Love Buffalo Rumblings but...
4 different ways to access with different content/conversations? This blog is FANTASTIC and is a must visit, multiple times per day for any Bills fan, but for those of us who don’t want to be an every-day facebooker I am wondering what I am missing out on? Diving into Twitter has really decreased my already limited participation on Facebook.
Assuming the standard formula isn’t changed, the Facebook bit is a link to one of the site’s articles and a discussion question like “Where would you rank the Bills in your NFL Power Rankings?” You won’t miss too much if you can’t check that.

The vast majority of our conversations will still take place here. Our audience isn’t specific to these comments sections though, so we’re just trying to make ourselves more accessible. You won’t be “missing” anything if you use one of the other mediums.

Similiar to a Ron from NM O-line breakdown...
I’d personally I’d like to see each week a breakdown of the D-line, or the secondary, or the Wide Receivers etc….
i realize this is quite a bit to breakdown each week though…
not much to say
This is one of the most comprehensive and interesting websites covering sports on the internet. Not just among sports blogs — all websites, period.
I’ve loved the Bills since 1972 (I was 9), left Buffalo in 1981 and haven’t lived there since, now live in Portland, Oregon. I check Buffalo Rumblings three or four times a day (as well as the Buffalo News, Rochester D&C, and the official Bills site), and it is rare that there isn’t (1) a new post that (2) I read completely because (3) I learn something new and insightful about my favorite sports team.
I already get too many emails (so I wouldn’t be interested in an “alert” when new content is posted), and I don’t use Twitter for much the same reason (incoming information overload), but I’m not sure I have any suggestions for improving something that’s already excellent. I rather like just showing up whenever I have time (or want to procrastinate!) and find new content.
Also love the function where the comments on a post since the last time I checked are highlighted in yellow — the commenters are one of the strongest parts of the site in my opinion.
Pretty easy to please techonologically and in terms of content. If you could make sure the Bills will the Super Bowl, that would be nice.

Agree 100%
This is the best sports blog of any sport around. There is new, interesting content every single day. How the heck did you do this during the strike?
As an armchair QB, I’ve learned more about the game from this site than any other.
Practice Squad
I have often wondered how the kids are doing on the farm. Really, these are men who could become active at nearly any time due to injuries. It would be nice to get an update maybe once a week as to how these players are progressing, or not. Let’s not forget how many of our current active players were practice squad players at one point.
CC Infantino
This is probably a more sbnation as a whole issue, but I figure I’d throw it out there anyways (maybe you, Brian, can put this suggestion in the proper inbox at sbnation).
I love how easy it is to keep up with threads on the full internet site, but I do most of my rumbling on the mobile site on my droid. It is very difficult to detect which comments are new or unread when I go back to a thread on the mobile site. There are no colors depicting which are new and old, and unless I remember where I left off, it is difficult to join back in on the conversation scrolling endlessly trying to tell what’s new…..so, is there any way to get some colors on the mobile app around the unread comments?

I understand that you work for SB Nation and that any sane person would want to make money from such a great/successful website. But I truly don’t care about the GMC Superbowl contest. I love the website and this is a very small thing for me.
As for content, I appreciate when any of the writers give their honest opinions. I feel that the analysis provided by a website of this nature is where the appeal lies. For news people can use ESPN. Nobody should be protected from criticism, as long as it is well thought out.

Help / How to or FAQs
I think this would be really helpful. I can’t count the number of times people ask how to “rec” a posting, or how to add links and quote text from other bloggers. I wonder how many folks know that by clicking on their name at the top of the main page they can not only see a summary of their posts and how many responses, but by clicking “comment” they are taken right to the article and responses to their specific comments so they can respond to the replies?

Anyhow, I do have plans to get back into it, I just don’t know when. I love doing the articles, but they take FOREVER because I try to find every little last detail about each guy. I prefer to really talk about and read about the season at hand right now, along with fantasy football. I don’t have a ton of time to plow through some of these, in my free time, as a result.
I promise I will get back into them this offseason though. I’ve been meaning to get feedback for some time, as well. Are there any changes that people might want to see? Earlier in the season there was a offensive/defensive play chart. It was basic. It gave a count of how many plays each player was involved in.
I’d like for that to come back.
It gives good insight as to the direction the team is moving as well as injuries.
For example, Shepp taking over for Andra or how many plays Merriman is taking off.

I’m not sure that I’m volunteering though
A long time ago the site used to do interviews of current and former Bills players and workers. I remember the biggest name you got was Poz.
I would love to see if Rumblings could secure another interview with a current Bill, like Stevie or Fred, or even one of our depth players like Nelson or Shep. I think the only way this site could be better was with more of an insider perspective gotten through things like interviews with organization members.

I hear ya, but I think a “thumbs down” option would create an atmosphere of hostility/negativity. I think that’s why there’s no Facebook “dislike” button. I think the “flag” option works well enough, though I sympathize with having to go through a bunch of hardly related comments to find a meaty one.
I would change the recommended fanpost section. I hate seeing posts still lingering about teams we played two weeks ago. It doesn’t make sense to have them up there for so long, especially since we can’t comment on them after a few days. I do like how it takes quite a few recs to get up there. There is rarely a recommended fanpost that isn’t very interesting.

football Terminology?
Awhile back one of the Rumblers posted an excellent blog on defensive formations and explained the difference between Sam, Mike, and Will linebackers. Also explained weak and strong side backers. Having a permanent section for this would greatly enhance dialogue on this site. Imagine a single source for Offense, Defense, and Special teams. How many folks know what is a gunner, up back, flanker, wedge buster, or split end?

I was thinking the same thing.
I’m a fan, albeit not a very technical one. I don’t know my 3-4 from a 4-3 from a Tampa 2. So, I usually just sit those discussions out. I’ve learned a LOT from the people around here, and I know most of you probably are way more technical than me. I’d love to know more about what you’re talking about with some of those things. And I doubt I’m the only one. It seems to be always the same people talikng in some of the more technical discussions.
I do know my Sam from my Mike, though. And it was finally through a discussion here that I understood why the strong side is the strong side and not the weak side.
"...and dance by the light of the moon!"
SB Nation's iPhone app is not good.
I can’t just go up and down this site with it. They seem to want to only feed me a few articles off BR, and then throw me anything else on the other SB Nation blogs that mentions the Bills. I’m so frustrated with it, I’ve gone back to using Safari and looking at the site through that (when I’m not at home).
SB Nation needs to give us more control over what we want to look at in the iPhone app. Thank you.

Video Break Down
Memory’s foggy, but over the summer Brian didn’t you break down some Bills’ offensive and defensive sets by linking to videos (or maybe a series of stills)? I miss the in-depth break downs. Watching on tv, the camera always follows the ball so it’s difficult to see what WRs are doing down the field, what the O-line is doing etc etc . . . in lieu of access to game film, I crave something to help me go deeper.
My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.
Someone earlier mentioned breakdowns of the D Line and Secondary and such. I’d love that. Lately, the week to week articles seem a lot like what we could get from any media outlet. Honestly, it’s at the point where I gloss over them at best if i bother to even click on them. It doesn’t feel like the Buffalo Rumblings coverage I’ve grown to love since 07/08. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m that much better at finding Bills coverage on other sites or if the staff is getting complacent. I hope it’s because I’m finding coverage elsewhere.
The major exception is the analysis of the O Line — you don’t get that anywhere.

ALSO, I’d really appreciate it if MRW stopped posting ads on his twitter feed. He is damned close to losing a follower because he keeps advertising discounted energy costs in a state I don’t live in. And it’s painful, because I like what he brings to the twitter table. At least add a hashtag, so I can easily block the ads.

Tight Ends
I notice that teams who use tight ends frequently tend to spread the field more which opens up the offense. Last couple weeks, Buffalo seems to have gotten away from it. Any chance of dissecting scoring drives when TE’s have been featured in the drive and when they have not? Just want to see if there is a strong correlation to using the TE to moving the ball or if it is just me.
I love this bar! Brian, MRW, K, Eric, Ron, DJ...... another round for all of my friends!

As I’ve said before, I think this is the best blog and best blog community out there. That said, we all have room to improve, so here are some suggestions.
1. Rumblings Merchandise. Hats, shirts, jerseys, Abayarde bumper stickers, whatever. I doubt you guys get paid that much, especially for the amount of time y’all put into this. I’d be happy to buy merchandise if just to put a few dollars in your guys’ pockets. I visit this site three times a day, every day. I’d love to have a chance to make a small contribution.
2. Rumblings weekly podcast. A simple 30-minute audio podcast would be a nice change of pace. You and Matt or Der Jaguer can discuss specific topics, or better yet, you could take calls from fellow Rumblers.
3. Video breakdowns. This obviously takes a good deal of skill and time, but would be amazing.
4. Rumblings annual gathering. I’m way up in Alaska so I wouldn’t be able to attend, but some sort of actual, real-world gathering, I think, could unite/strengthen the fanbase even more.
5. Continue “50 Best Bills of all time” Series. That was a lot of fun and really well done.
6. New logo. I know you guys are attached to it, but if we’re going to confidently advance into the 21st century, something more sophisticated is needed, I think. It appears all the SB NFL logos were done by a team of graphic artists in their junior year of college. This place has evolved steadily since then, and I think our logo should change with the times, too.
If none of these ideas are used, I’ll still visit three times a day. Love the blog. Thanks so much!

number 2 and 3 are the next step for this website
I would also welcome an Abayarde podcast (where he could just shout randome nonsense and fire us up). But seriously, a podcast and some video breakdown after a game would be AWESOME!

A podcast would be great.

I would very much enjoy a weekly Buffalo Rumblings podcast. I’ve heard both Brian and MRW on various podcasts/radio shows and have enjoyed listening to their perspectives and insights. Also, this would be a great way to take the quality Rumblings content on the road or subway.

Great ideas
I’d love to do podcasts or phone calls. Right now I’m a bit swamped, though. I’m working on my masters now and probably my PhD next year, so it may have to wait, or at least proceed in a less robust form.

If a lot of things work the way I need them to, yes
If not, the program next year allows dissertation completion within five years of course graduation.
And that’s all assuming that I am accepted to the program.

I knew there was something about you that we must have had in common…I will also be gett a PhD next year :) Grad school is fun, ain’t it?

I’m working on my masters in security studies right now. I just finished my first cut on the success of American reconstruction efforts in post-WWII Germany about five minutes ago. Currently waiting on my advisor to return it in shreds.
If I get accepted, my PhD will be in strategy.

The video breakdowns would be tricky as you’d have to get a licensing agreement with the NFL to use their video.

Glossary
I think something like a glossary would be nice to have. For instance, I asked in another post earlier today what the Piston formation was, because I couldn’t remember. If there were a page where we could just go to reference this kind of stuff, it would be helpful.
Something sort of along the lines of what you see here or here.

Videos
Other sites include them. Having video highlights would be sweet. Of course, ive asked for this before and I didn’t get a reply.

What time zone is this site in? The time is in PDT, not Eastern Standard. Why is that?
Double check your account settings

Running Backs
One of the big issues we are going to continue to have this year is Fred Jackson. I would be interested in a detailed look at what we can expect from Fred over the next few years, based on other players with similar skill levels and amounts of time in the league.

I like some of kai11's suggestions above, but...
…other than that, this site is too amazing to have any complaints about.
Great job, all around guys. Brian should be proud of having the best sports blog in existence.
I like to believe this has more to do with the Bills players feeling like they can be something special. They started a year 0-8 and finished 4-4 while taking playoff and championship game bound teams to OT and 3 pt nail biters. All this with one year under a new coach and with a young roster. Im sure they can feel what they are capable of. -poz
I think this is a great site and feel welcome anytime I come here
As a new Bills fan I have felt welcome here and thank the mods and all the other fans here.
I would like to see a comprehensive look at the up and coming players and what our future looks like
I would also like to have a discussion about Buffalo itself,Maybe a fanpost about the things to do in Buffalo and the best places to eat and stay for visitors
I plan on making a trip up there to see a game and any info would be nice

Last year we had a really nice feature about college players to watch for on Saturdays. Guys to keep an eye on for the Bills to possibly draft.
Last year was a bit easier because we knew the Bills would be a top 5 draft pick. But I think if maybe the blog could throw out 5 names to watch at each position would be a nice addition. Or something similar to last years articles.

A place to discuss fantasy football would be nice.
Brian, I know you chimed in recently that there’s an outlet to do so, but interacting with the board here seems more rewarding.
It’d be fun to see how all the BR leagues are doing too.
One other thing: Could you please refrain from posting any new content until after the work day ends? =)

On the last thing: no. The vast majority of our traffic comes in during the work day. Our traffic even plummets on the weekends during the season.

I was joking. I can imagine traffic goes down on the weekend. What’s that say about us all, that we come here during the work day?

As far as SBnation – which really isn’t here – but on Mobile why don’t they make accessing other teams blogs easy? you have to go to the full site and get away from the mobile site – annoying!
again though – I think the more technical breakdown’s the better. t hat way the “essential BR” would get more usage. that page is stagnant

Ups and Downs
One of my favourite blog series’ is done by silversevensens.com in previous years (and probably others) where every week they feature risers and fallers among the players on the team. I would love to read a BR perspective about which players are improving and which ones are struggling on the team. It is pretty straight forward, but it would really help highlight the positional battles and keep track of some of the player’s progression throughout the season.
Risers this past week: Andy Levitre, Namaan Roosevelt, Freddy, Tmac, etc
Fallers this past week: Dflo, Andra Davis, Fitz, etc
Note – I would be interested to read someone who did this as a FanPost as well (or could do it myself). I just prefer feature articles and the BR perspective.
Here is a link to a very old example. A football version obviously wouldn’t feature every player on the roster.
