Buffalo Bills Practice Update: Kyle Williams Out 1-2 More Games
Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey conducted a practice on Wednesday - the only one scheduled during his team's bye week - and after practice spoke with reporters for the final time this week. He had a bit of bad news to convey regarding defensive tackle Kyle Williams, too: Williams may miss another game or two.
Williams was spotted in the locker room wearing a walking boot today, and he obviously did not take part in practice. He's a clear longshot to play in Week 8 (on October 30) against Washington, and may be out even longer. Williams did not play in last weekend's game against the Giants; that was the third game he'd missed in his six-year career.
Eight players did not participate in today's practice, including the team's top three offensive tackles: Demetrius Bell, Chris Hairston and Andy Levitre. (Erik Pears played left tackle.) Also sitting were Donald Jones, Shawne Merriman, Nick Barnett and Aaron Williams.
The one bit of good news today: Chris Kelsay did practice, and is planning on playing in Week 8. He'd missed the last two games with a calf injury.

Then again, I’d rather have him out vs. a rookie than have him out vs. a vet. Rookie SHOULD be easier to get in his face (well, ignore that whole Dalton fiasco).

I'll guess
that he means Beck might as well be a rookie… Don’t know.

devastating
as hard as the bills play they are bound to get hurt here and there, the upside is he will be back in a few games to finish the season out strong
Chris Kelsay playing is good news. Cats are living with dogs.

What happened to Levitre?

he fell into the black hole called the Bills LT position. No one goes in and comes out alive! Bell, then Hairston, now Levitre. Look out Pears!
This team is making me skeptical of my skepticism- putting the crow in the oven to slow roast.
Jason Peters must have had something to do with it. That jerk!

Who filled in for Willaims against the Giants?
Was it Dwan?
Heard got the start. I think Troup rotated in as well

They rotated quite frequently.
Heard got the start and the majority of snaps and really struggled.
Troup played very sparingly, and wasn’t very effective, either. I think he was not 100% from a back injury though.
Edwards was in the middle quite a bit and made some good run stops that I noticed.
I didn’t see any push in the middle of the pocket from those three all game. Dareus made a few good pressures when he wasn’t being double-teamed and/or held. He is going to be a beast when he gets comfortable out there.

Troup played 10-12.plays and back was still botherung him according to gailey.

What needs to be done
Move Dareus to NT; it’s his natural position, and, as mentioned, he’s the only one getting any push up the middle. Plus, he’ll be a space eater on runs.
Have Heard rotate with him. Troup is becoming the d-line version of Marcus Easley, and there’s no telling when Williams will be 100% {sad that this happens right after he signed that big extension}
Put Carrington/Sp. Johnson at Dareus’ DE spot — and bring their “experiments” at LB to a merciful end . . .
.

What needs to be done!
Sounds like a good plan, & it could very well be the best plan I"ve heard for this situation, if the Bills have a better one I"d likt to see it.
Yeah, I don’t think NT is Dareus’ “natural” position, either. He’s not really a space-eater like a traditional NT should be. He’s more of a strength, speed mismatch over guards and tackles making his “natural” position DT, but I think he plays quite well as a 3-4 DE.
That said, I think Dareus is more than versatile enough to play NT in the Bills’ modified 3-4.

Ouch Erik Pears
STILL gets no love
Even from me, I forgot he was on the team!

That could be because
of all our tackles, Pears is the only one who’s given up sack(s) . . .

Kyle's out.
Ok where’s Jasper? Has he made any improvement? Now might be the time to find out, at least a few downs a game maybe? Every team has injuries we certainly have had our share over the last few years, but the difference between a good team and a team that was/is ravaged by injuries is how they respond to those injuries. Now is not the time to stand pat now is the time to show that we are a real player in this years race to the playoffs and fight for the championship by being active, proactive, and reactive whatever it takes. I’m a Bills fan up or down, I just want to know what my team thinks is the best way to stay in contention for this years title!
Who would you like to cut from the team, so Jasper can play a game?
I think they are taking the correct approach. Kyle needs to rest so we can have him to play against AFC teams, and make the push towards the playoffs.
Is this your homework, Larry?

I wouldn’t hesitate to cut him, as long as we brought up a WR.
4 Nose Tackles seems a bit excessive to me.

by Schooled You on Oct 19, 2011 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions
doubt it
He’s not the best at catching, and he’s not the best route runner, but he does contribute on special teams.
But to activate him from the practice squad, we would have to release a player. So if they did that, Jasper would see rotations in one or two games, then after Kyle comes back, we are thin at a different position because we cut a person to play Jasper for a game or two.
I’m not saying Jasper is a bad guy, or bad player, I’m just saying it’s certainly not in the teams best intrest to activate him right now. Unless he can beat out Heard or Troup, there is no reason to consider activating him.
Is this your homework, Larry?
by Schooled You on Oct 19, 2011 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Jasper is also an O-lineman
I’m really not sure how activating him for a game or two, potentially ruining his PS eligibility and moving him to a position the team doesn’t even have him working at is going to help him or the team.

Troupe
Troupe’s back recovery seems to be stuck in neutral and according to PFF – he was only in for 6 snaps. I don’t want to see him go to IR, but if that’s his upper snap limit, we may be better off putting him on IR – and yes, bring up Jasper.
Not sure what’s up with the back, but after 5 weeks – with little or no improvement – it may require surgery to get it right.
Jasper is playing guard now.

Right, I know that. Wilson was a receiver once upon a time, Moats a (insert position) and Carrington the same.
Just saying that in an emergency, he could be plugged in to give Heard a breather.
But it’s not at all likely to happen. Nix came right out and said they played him at nose so teams wouldn’t try to sign him when they cut him, with the goal of putting him on the practice squad all along. That doesn’t sound like a plan philosophically in line with suddenly thinking he can give you snaps there in a game that counts.

Our options are limited due to injury
We really need to allow Heard some practice and playing time to get a full evaluation of his potential. He did make the active Roster, that is a good thing. Last week he practiced with Troupe who was a full participant at practice, but, Heard received the start on game day. Depending on Troup’s progress during the bye week Heard should receive more attention, reps and conditioning. Looking down the road, we need him to step up and see what he can do, even if Troup is only available for quick breaks here and there. We have a situation here that needs to be handled carefully as we need Williams back healthy and Troup needs something more than he has been able to offer or both could eventually end up on IR.
