Should have made a play at Samuel
Although I can't put total blame on our defensive backs (12 INTS leads the league), the play of Drayton Florence, Mckelvin and T. McGee( not looking like his old self) made this move seem like a good idea. As many of you know, Asante Samuel doesn't fit great in Phili right now. Its not that he is playing bad, its just the statement they made to him buy attaining Namdi. Our real problem is the pass rush though, which would have been nice to address as well with the trade deadline, but attaining a corner who is a very solid prospect was right there for the taking. I don't know if it would have costed that much (im thinking maybe a 3rd) but it would have been worth it with the inconsistency of the play by Mckelvin and Florence. Like I said, they can only do so much with a horrible pass rush and faired decently so far, but picking up a vet like Samuel or some other pass rusher could really have helped propel this team into the playoffs in my opinion. We have been starving for a pass rusher, and from the looks of it, Merriman is not the same old Lights Out. A stab at a guy like Freeney, Mathis or Jared Allen from a team in the rebuilding process for a 2nd or 3rd would have helped tremendously.
I know its always seems like a christmas list and wishing on stars when we throw out names, but we are in need of a pass rush, especially with Kyle Williams out. He may not be 100% for the rest of the season. Besides Dareus, we are not getting any push. Maybe Shep will help? Without a pass rush, I believe it is too much pressure for our current DB's. We can't keep counting on 4 INT's a game to barely win games. We need some consistent pressure. The bye week I feel was a big missed opportunity with a lot of bad teams and players to have been had. Like I said, maybe i'm just thinking of an early christmas list, but I would have like are chances/felt more reassured at this thing with some other kind of guy to rush the passer. I know I originally put Samuel at the top of this article, but a pass rush is probably the more dire need. Hopefully they can come up with something schematically for the next 10 games to make a push at this.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Samuel not a good tackler
And in our Run D the CBs have to be
McGee and A Williams would be the best tandem outside
Problem is that McLovin could play in slot but not DFlo
Well
I certainly don’t think that the Colts or the Vikings are in rebuilding mode. The Colts are just missing Manning (if he was healthy this year they would be a winning team and probably leading that division).
The Vikings are just a piece or 2 away from being a contender again so I highly doubt they would give up their biggest pass rusher and arguably best defensive player just because of 1 down year. Don’t forget they have not only been in almost every game but actually had the lead in most of those games. They just seem to blow it in the 2nd half.
As far as the Bills and making a move for Samuel…no thanks. Not for a 3rd or anything higher. The Eagles probably would have wanted a lot more (consider how much they wanted for Kolb and that was a guy who only had potential he wasn’t even a proven talent). Now the Cardinals must be regretting that decision if Schefter’s reports are true that they were trying to make a play for Palmer.
But back to Samuel…the guy is a 30 yr old corner who does not like to tackle. He is a bit of a ball hawk, but what good is a ball hawk when you have no pass rush to force bad throws? See Jairus Byrd and how his int totals have gone down since we have lost Schobel. He does have a couple years left on his contract but would be making between $9.5-$11.5 million over the last couple seasons of the contract. An awfully high amount for a player who doesn’t really help this team any more than the guys currently on our roster do. With the amount of money we spent on D Flo. I can’t blame them for not making a play on Samuel, if anything focus on drafting a pass rusher or finding one in free agency. Don’t waste a draft pick trading it for an overpriced CB.

I don't know about the Vikings being a piece or two away.
They need a true outside WR to complement Harvin.
Their O-Line is in shambles at multiple positions.
They probably need another good DT to pair with Kevin Williams.
Their DB corp is compromised, Ss are acceptable but not above replacing, and their CB corp took a hit when Chris Cook went Chris Brown on his girlfriend (CC is currently in jail waiting to be arraigned, AW is getting up there in age, CG has had two knee surgeries, AA is alright but not great).
And this is assuming Ponder plays well.

I didn't say super bowl...I'm talking playoffs
I see them only really needing to add a WR, OL, and CB. Certainly not in rebuild mode and that was the point I was making. DT…eh not really they have good LB’s and still have Kevin Williams anyway (just because they don’t have Pat Williams doesn’t mean it’s bad…just not as good as it used to be). This is a team who has been in every single game they have played, like I said, they just seem to blow leads in the 2nd half. I look at teams like the Dolphins, Jags, Browns, etc. as rebuild mode teams not the Colts or Vikings.

I think with Peyton Manning out, the Colts are showing everyone that they truly do need to rebuild. Has a team ever depended so heavily on their QB?

I think they need
a new coach. The defense certainly needs to rebuild and they have missed a good RB for a long time (they missed with Donald Brown) but as a coach you need to get more out of your players. But to say that the Colts should/would be willing to trade their top 2 defensive players and only source of pass rush just because of 1 down season when your star QB is out for the year is sadly mistaken. Sorry just not going to get me off that stance. The Pats lost Brady for a year and still finished 11-5 with a questionable defense….I believe a lot of this has to do with the coach.

Samuel is a zone coverage back first and foremost. As far as where we would like to go with the secondary and providing something we don’t have (a strong man coverage corner) It doesn’t seem all that logical. He’s more of what we got. Not great, but gets picks, will give up yards and get burned though. He did that in New England he’s done that in Philly. There’s a reason he’s sometimes playing safety…
This totally reads like a “I know that name” acquisition idea. The kid is really similar to a lot of the guys we have, and he might be a marginal upgrade for one of them, but pretty much not worth the effort. He’s not gonna change how teams attack this d or help the pass rush. We need pass-rush help, I think we push the pocket better than last year when we are healthy. But we still need some help with explosiveness off the edge, particularly on passing downs. Batten and Moats looks like decent depth on a team (which is kind of okay given their draft status), but we lack eliteness.
I have low expectations. But high hopes.
which is why I kind of transitioned it too….we need a pass rusher. I should have took Samuel off the title. Its just our corners are so inconsistent I could see us drafting another one in the first two rounds next year again.
Yeah, I agree with about 90% of what you said. Just reacted to the title.
I have low expectations. But high hopes.

McGee played really well in 1 of 1 games he’s played so far this year so I disagree with your assessment that he doesn’t look like his old self. The only problem there is the 1 of 1 part.

It’s not as simple as Madden.. Salary Cap is a tough problem and it’s not like these guys are spring chickens. You can’t trade high draft picks every year and expect to be competitive long-term. Can’t hope for big trades because they just aren’t going to happen. You have to build through the draft.
see I dont fully agree with that. Your right, but in my opinion and in my logic, giving up a 3rd round pick for a proven CB or pass rusher who can contribute at least another 4 years is better than an unknown 3rd rounder at this time. Its obvious we need a pass rush. Do you honestly see us going far in the playoffs (if we make it) without a pass rush? I don’t. Getting a guy who can give an impact now rather than wait next year and hope the guy turns out was my logic at this specific time. Yes build through the draft, but when your a piece or two away on defense with the ability to make a run at it now, pull it, in my opinion. Like I said, prob not on samuel as much as maybe Freeney, Mathis…
