Shawne Merriman Injury Not Progressing As Planned
In a bit of news that should surprise no one, but nonetheless is disappointing in its surprising nature, Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey revealed on Monday that the Achilles injury to outside linebacker Shawne Merriman wasn't healing as quickly as planned, and that the veteran pass rusher may be forced to miss another game.
Merriman has been dealing with the Achilles injury for the past few weeks, and that was preceded by a shoulder injury that kept him in and out of the lineup for a time, as well. His coaches have been resting him copiously when he's been healthy enough to play, worried about his being in game shape.
Coming into the season, Merriman had appeared in just 18 games over the past three seasons, starting with the 2008 opener. In five appearances this season, he's recorded nine tackles and a sack. Clearly, the news that he's not progressing as planned is bad news for Buffalo's prospects defensively (and potentially for a while) - but it's also news that the team could've better planned to deal with.

Jabari Greer didn’t make sense and rhyming anything relevant with Gailey is like doing so with the word orange.

If hes not ready for the Jets game...
do we IR him? I think we’ll have to. Him or Kyle, or both to bring in some help. We cant hold 2 spots on our roster for players that will not be close to 100%, from what it sounds, this year.

I would miss Robert Eddins so much. The pass rush cupboard is next to bare without Merriman.
Despite the fact we reached an injury settlement with Eddins we are still unable to re-sign him due to placing him on IR, right?
by WhatGoesAround on Oct 25, 2011 1:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Right
Merriman wasn’t much of a pass rush anyway..
Time for the young bloods to step up.. 10 games left.. Let’s see what they got
Does anyone know if Eddins was signed to anyone?
by RiddickBillsFan on Oct 25, 2011 2:06 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
We can't sign Eddins, but...
we could sign Antonio Coleman away from the Giants practice squad.

Yes, better planning
Like taking a pass-rushing OLB in the draft. K.J. Wright from Miss. State went, I believe, in the 4th round, and he is looking great so far. A number of us were talking about him as someone the Bills should choose well before the draft. Why couldn’t Buddy and the scouting dept. have picked up on him? There were other good options as well. Buddy has done a lot of things right and overall deserves good marks, but relying on Merriman to stay healthy made no sense and was surely his biggest mistake of the year
I don’t see any of these later OLB prospects as really helpful. What we lack at OLB is a starter that can step-in and improve the pass-rush and defend the run.
Wright seems like a fine guy, but he has no sacks plays a ton of snaps, and is an OLB in a 3-4. Pretty unconvinced he ameliorates our problems. What we got from Merriman was the potential for legit play at the position. We can plug-in mid-round picks that look like Wright (and may be better, in the likes of Moats or Batten), what we don’t have are developed talents at this position. That is something we missed on, but I think it was a miss in free agency, not the draft.
I have low expectations. But high hopes.

Sorry meant to say hes an OLB in a 4-3

Yes, but he could certainly play in a 3-4. He has 20 tackles so far, and he has only been a starter for the Seahawks for a few weeks. And they have him playing MLB, which is one of the main reasons he has so few sacks. He certainly has the speed to play outside, but they needed him to replace Aaron Curry, who they felt was underperforming (they have now traded him).
Seems like a stretch to say that a guy who racked up 20 tackles as a MLB in a 4-3 would necessarily add something to the mix of batten and moats (and now coleman). If he was clearly better than those first two, I would agree, I’d like to have him. But we have “propsect” types at this position. We lack guys who have arrived. But maybe you think he is far and above a better OLB pass-rusher prospect than these two.
I have low expectations. But high hopes.

No
Regardless of what he’s done with the NYJ, he showed little of what he needed to here in Buffalo, and lost all that weight! For a team that was so bad against the run and didn’t have a roster spot for a pure, passing down pass rusher, his purpose was limited. We wanted to be stouter against the run, and I’m positive Maybin would NOT have helped.
Two of his sacks where garbage. He was puhed 20 yards out of the play and the qb held the ball for so long he was ablle to run up from behind and cause a fumble sack. the sack from the other day the guy cant pass protect for anything so it is what is.Plus he sucks on the run.He only gets n on ovious passing situations.

Those 3 sacks, 3 FFs just bought him at least two more years in the league

Not only is that off subject, but it’s incorrect. The return on the investment to upgrade RWS outweighs the initial cost. Clearly the author of that article hasn’t been to a modern stadium. I love RWS as much as the next guy, but it does require some modernization. If the economy of the United States crashes, it will not because state and local Govt invested in something that will bring a great return.
but it’s also news that the team could’ve better planned to deal with.
easy to write – not easy to implement.
Remember the Patriots biggest off season need? Pass rushers – and they didn’t acquire one of them.
Aaron Maybin 3, Bills 4
That’s right, the Bills only have 1 more sack than Aaron Maybin this year, and he hasn’t even played the whole season! Our pass rush is abysmal. Who will have more sacks this year, the Bills or Maybin?
Even Jarius Byrd would have more sacks than Maybin
if the rest of the defense was as stout in pass rush as the Jets are.
There it is.

Quite possibly the worst signing in Bills history.
When you look at actual return on money spent. Now that he’s on IR let’s lock him up extra long term.
how much did we spend though? Here’s rotoworlds contract details:
1/1/2011: Signed a two-year, $10.5 million contract. The deal contains $5 million guaranteed, including a $1.5 million signing bonus and $1 million worth of first-year workout and reporting bonuses. $3 million of Merriman’s second-year salary is guaranteed “with exception for injury.” Another $8 million is available through incentives, although $1 million is considered “unlikely to be earned.” 2011: $2.75 million, 2012: $4 million (+ $1 million roster bonus + $250,000 workout bonus), 2013: Free Agent
seems very incentive based and the “exception for injury” clause was clearly in there for a reason….
by J2 on Oct 25, 2011 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions
He got that contract based on stepping on the practice field for 15 minutes.
And then got paid over $500,000 per tackle.
(I’m not including contracts like Maybin’s, rookie contracts were a whole ’nother monster.)
by twoeightnine on Oct 25, 2011 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
he got that contract for his past performance with SD – that I agree with.
I’m curious as to how much we paid out – why is why I asked the question. I just provided some details – I just don’t want people thinking we paid Merriman $10 million for doing nothing – because he’s probably never hit anywhere close or even any of that $8 million through incentives then part of the $5 million guaranteed isn’t even guaranteed because of an injury clause.
so…i’ll ask – how much have we paid him?
by J2 on Oct 25, 2011 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions
i say we paid him enough to stay next year
but not enough for the team to cut him if that makes any sense at all

personally I doubt he’s here next year. It’s good to get Batten and Moats some extra playing time though. Regardless of our record – we’re still building and we need guys like Batten and Moats to get playing time

Anyone else worried about Sunday?
No Merriman, Levitre starting at LT, and no Kyle Williams/Troup at NT…
I believe bell has not been ruled out yet. Plus redskins got lots if people out also.

Coleman
Rumor has it he’s already been signed off the Giant’s PS.
Need a small college impact player......
Who can the Bills put on the practice squad at outside linebacker. I would not care if that person came from a small Division III college, they have more desire and determination to play this game than what I see in Merriman.
