Last week, we pointed out that the Washington Redskins had just named a new starting quarterback in John Beck. After his first start of the season last week - a 33-20 loss to Carolina - the early returns on Beck's performance have generally been favorable.
In defeat - and against the NFL's No. 17-ranked defense - Beck completed 22-of-37 passes for 279 yards, threw one touchdown and one interception, was sacked three times, lost a fumble, and scored a rushing touchdown for a second consecutive week. The Redskins put up 353 yards of total offense in the game - their second-highest total of the season - and Beck was able to make plays with both his arm and his legs.
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said earlier this week that he was "proud" of Beck's performance in the loss, then indicated that if Beck can keep playing that well this season, he'll get better as the team improves the level of talent around him. That talent level took a big hit this week, however, when running back Tim Hightower and receiver Santana Moss were lost to lengthy injury recoveries.
This week, Beck gets the Buffalo Bills and their No. 31-ranked defense.
