Web Rumblings: Buffalo Bills News, 10/27

Merriman wasn't worth the gamble - Jerry Sullivan
"On the day he became the Bills' general manager, Buddy Nix told us he wasn't the smartest guy in the room. That was surely the case when he re-signed Shawne Merriman."

Wilson says Toronto crowd just isn't the same - The Buffalo News
Said Wilson: "It's not a home game. We're playing an international game that counts as a home game because it's relatively closer to Buffalo. We're ambassadors of the game, trying to globalize the sport. So we understand that. But at the same time, it's certainly not the same environment that we have here in Ralph Wilson Stadium. ... The expectation is there's going to be just as many cheers for the Redskins as there will for us. We just have to make sure we're the ones making the big plays so there's no cheers for the other team."

Bills CB Williams Hopes To Be Back In 1-2 Weeks - WGR 550
"It lets you know how important the game is, and how fast it can be taken away from you," said the cornerback on Wednesday. "That let me know you must cherish every moment, every play, every game, every practice, because you never know when it might be your last."

Bills form a rush committee - The Buffalo News
"Spencer Johnson, Danny Batten and Arthur Moats will share time at outside linebacker opposite veteran Chris Kelsay now that Merriman is out for the season with an Achilles tendon injury. The Bills also signed linebacker Antonio Coleman to the roster, and he'll join the committee once he's up to speed with the Bills' defense."

Shanahan & Fitz's Wonderlic - The Buffalo News
In his meeting with the media today, a Toronto reporter asked Fitzpatrick if he ever gets tired of questions about how freakishly smart he is. "No, I love them," Fitzpatrick said. "Do you have any more questions about that?"

George Wilson: It's not a home game - The Buffalo News
Wilson continued: "You see just as many jerseys for the opposing team as you do for the Bills. They cheer for any big play regardless of which ever team makes it. So we have to do a great job of making sure we're the ones making those big plays so they're cheering for us as opposed to the Redskins."

Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick eager to get new contract finalized | Democrat and Chronicle
"It's something you try not to think about, but it's certainly something that exists, that's in the air. I'm human, too; I can't just block all that away. Yeah, it's something I'd like to get done and we'll just see how it progresses here in the next couple weeks."

Ryan Fitzpatrick sees progress in contract talks with Buffalo Bills | Democrat and Chronicle
"I'd like to remain here and I've said multiple times I really enjoy the guys I'm playing with, so we'll see how it shakes out," said Fitzpatrick, who currently ranks seventh in the NFL in passer rating at 95.3. "I think we've got a group of guys, a young, talented group of guys who like playing with each other."

Toronto Isn't Home For Bills' Wilson - WGR 550
"It's tough," Jackson replied. "The last three times we've been up there, we've had the smaller crowd. Hopefully with the start we've gotten off to this season, that changes. We'll find out once we get up there."

Five Bills Not Practicing Wednesday - WGR 550
"The team was without five players, all of whom were expected to miss this weekend's game in Toronto. Kyle Williams, Demetrius Bell, Donald Jones, Chris Hairston and Aaron Williams all did not participate in the session."

Shawne Merriman: Surgery a success - AFC East Blog - ESPN
"Buffalo Bills outside linebacker and former Pro Bowler Shawne Merriman wasted no time going under the knife. Just one day after going on injured reserve, Merriman had surgery on his ailing Achilles and will begin rehab to get back on the field in 2012."

Checking in: the 2011 First-Rounders | ProFootballFocus.com
"It’s not easy playing in the hybrid scheme of the Bills, and Dareus has had games where that has shown. But the quality has also shone through, with three performances graded in the green, to push him up into 11th place in our DT rankings. We feel like the best is yet to come this year."

32 Teams, 32 Observations | ProFootballFocus.com
"Ryan Fitzpatrick has had 824 of his 1477 passing yards come from the receivers after the catch. That is 55.8%, highest for all quarterbacks."

Ryan Fitzpatrick’s Wonderlic score: What does it mean? - The Washington Post
"We found in no cases was cognitive ability related to [football] performance," said John W. Michel, an assistant professor at Towson University who co-authored the study. "We did find a negative relationship for tight ends and defensive backs. For defensive backs, it was the most pronounced; basically, the lower you scored on the Wonderlic, the better you performed."

CANOE -- SLAM! Sports - NFL - Jackson epitomizes 'us-against-world' Bills
"His story isn’t just movie-of-the-week material. It’s a mini-series with the final episodes still unwritten. You meet Fred Jackson standing in the locker room at 1 Bills Drive and you want to shake his hand, and you want to hear what he has to say, because it isn’t often that the disregarded and the afterthoughts become players of consequence in the NFL or any professional sport. "

Bills safety not thrilled with Toronto ‘show’ - thestar.com
"It’s not possible," Wilson said of a Toronto crowd approximating the mood of one in Orchard Park. "First and foremost, I don’t think the Bills fans will respond well to them not allowing open containers around the stadium and in tailgating parking lots. And then with the stadium being right there in the heart of downtown, there’s really not much space for the fans to spread out their tailgating set ups and to be able to do it like they normally do."

Rivalry Between Fitzpatrick, Beck Goes All The Way ‘Back’ To Childhood - Redskins Journal
"John Beck was one of the best backstroke swimmers in Arizona when he was 9 and 10 years old. At least, that’s what Buffalo quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick remembers about his Washington Redskins counterpart. The two competed against each other in several sports while growing up in the Phoenix suburbs – Beck in Mesa, Fitzpatrick in Gilbert."

Dareus: His bye week came at the wrong time. His +5.1 grade against the Giants was primarily as a result of season-high pressures (four) and defensive stops (three).

Sounds like he stepped up his game with K Williams out.

Sullivan is back to his swamp

somebody should keep a tab on everything he says and make him accountable…. i am so itching to do it myself…

he is pushing so hard on getting fitz a contract with stupid moronic arguments… then when fitz plays bad after signing the contract he would be the first to jump on the FO… he is a swine….

why go there?

why does george have to stir things up when the team is doing so well? I AM in Toronto, I DO agree with what wilson has said, but it is the sort of thing you dont speak about publically. you dont diss half your fan base and their country, especially when they are the hand that is feeding you. Toronto tickets are too expensive, plain and simple. it becomes the same result as the superbowl where only the rich can attend and therefore dont have the rabid fan element that makes home games so great.

Disagree w/that

Truth & honesty.

Buffalo has been one of the hardest places for an opponent to come in & try to get a W. 12th man affect.

Loved visiting Toronto back in the day. Really enjoyed the less hostile vibe of your people. Love Hockey & your beer. (FC dancers were great too)

How bout givin George a bit of slack, perhaps he is changing the culture of being a senator, which we All would benefit from, or calling it like he see’s it instead of that pathetic party gibberish which most can now see as nothing but smoke & mirrors.

I kind of agree with captainStros that Wilson is probably not smart for saying these things… the team wants to (needs to?) regionalize, so the players should try to sell the product. And I live in TO and lots of people I know are Bills fans but can’t afford the ticket prices, so yeah, I think that’s a huge part of it.

Still, I get that its not the same as playing in the Ralph… but a good team wins wherever they play, and if the Bills were winning here the past few years, they’d have been building a better fan base.

Ideally, as someone who grew up near the Ralph… I’d like to see the TO project over and done with, build a new WNY stadium or really upgrade the existing one and get that stadium up to date with the rest of the league.

by JjR in TO on Oct 27, 2011 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Moving into a larger market isn’t regionalizing…it’s MOVING. The Bills regionalization efforts should be throughout upstate New York and the Niagara Peninsula, the places where they can actually draw long-term fans through their radio network and localized marketing. The GTA market, while close, is not the Bills market nor will it ever be.

Toronto is a market that is not minor league. Getting a “rental” team for a game or two a season is not going to interest them in the least (nor should it), which is another one of the many reasons why the crowds there are so lackluster. They are never going to support a team that isn’t wholly theirs and it was insulting and denigrating to think they would otherwise.

The Bills have regionalized in WNY. Training camp is in Rochester. They already draw from Pennsylvania on up in that direction. They have to get fans from So. Ontario, too.

When the GB Packers transferred 4 “home” games {1 preseason and 3 regular season} to Milwaukee {which they did every year until 1995, when the baseball-only Miller Park replaced Milwaukee County Stadium}, were they “moving” or “regionalizing”?

None of the areas you mentioned {throughout upstate NY and the Niagara Peninsula} have a larger population base/media footprint than Buffalo itself . . . so it only makes sense to regionalize in a larger market – say Toronto or Milwaukee – than a smaller one.

You should also remember that the ownership situation in Green Bay is unique in the NFL and is one that the NFL has repeatedly shown that they have no desire whatsoever to reproduce somewhere else. In my opinion that is a truly inane and institutionally corrupt position that the NFL is holding and one that is expressly designed to give the league political leverage for government-built stadia. If the Bills, for example, had the same sort of ownership model that the Packers did, it would be considerably more difficult for the league to financially extort the region by threatening a move.

he fines them for speaking out oncertain topics. I remember brady was asked a question and was like I will get in alot of trouble for answering that maybe a team fine. and he says its not dediated bills fans going to the game. which for the most part is true because most of the dedicated bills fans can not afford the game so people need to lay off personally. I like what he said and he is right. Its not a home game the stadium is filled with more opposinf fans than bills fans. Its a poor enviroment for a football game. it its an international game not home game. that all seems about right to me. He even goes out of his way stating how he loves toronto and the people there. He just hates the game because it takes o\away a home game. Also the players have to pay canadian tax and new york tax on their pay checks that week guessin many are not to happy about that.

Washington Examiner article

It is certainly one of the most blatant signs of arrogance, hubris and big-market bigotry that a Washington paper attempts to make the ludicrous claim that Buffalo isn’t a sports town anymore. Washington: a city which lost two baseball teams because of poor support and would lose their third if they didn’t have the commissioner in their back pocket and is still the #5 team in a four-sport country. Washington: a city which had a pretty damn good hockey team that they consistently ignored (19th in attendance the year they beat the Sabres in the EC finals, thanks to “No Goal I”) until the day the NHL poured millions into marketing their star player. They didn’t care about their NBA team until MJ showed up and then forgot about them again when he left.

Washingtontonians only support their teams other than the Redskins when media pressure or collusion with the league is involved.

MEMO TO GEORGE WILSON

WORRY LESS ABOUT THE VENUE — AND MORE ABOUT THE OUTCOME.

If it makes you feel better to say the TO game is not a home game, fine — say it isn’t a home game.

In which case, I’d expect you to be as professional – and give as much effort towards trying to win – as you would any other “road” game.

You’ve complained that the crowd at Rogers sports as many jerseys for the other team, and cheers as loudly when they make a big play, as they do for the Bills.

Well, here’s a novel idea: TRY ACTUALLY WINNING THE DAMN GAME FOR ONCE, AND THE CROWD JUST MIGHT CHEER LOUDER FOR YOU AND SPORT MORE OF YOUR JERSEYS . . .
