CJ Spiller 13th fastest NFL player?

Well, he's supposedly faster than Darrius Heyward-Bey and... Dwight Freeney? Freeney: player-polled 2nd fastest defensive player in the NFL?

It’s a player’s poll so they are probably judging by who plays the fastest, not 40 times. Like Freeney, he’s probably considered fast off the ball to linemen, they aren’t saying he’s the second fastest overall 40 time among defensive players.

This should matter more than 40 times. I’ve said it before but testing a kid’s speed out on a turfed track wearing nothing but underarmor isn’t a true measure of his speed as an NFL player. Put pads on him, make him run similar distances that he’d have to run per his NFL position. I think the 40 time is most revealing for a player’s ability to get E-W on the field. A guy like Wes Welker, his E-W speed is insane.

And even more importantly, 40 yards is not a really game-relevant distance. Football is all about acceleration and agility, especially at this level. You have to be able to escape from or close on a player in a short gap, 5-10 yards. 40 yard speed matters when it comes down to which guy, if any, has a shot at catching you from behind at X distance with Y to go to the end zone.
