Stevie, Stevie, Stevie

I'm going to forgive Stevie's drop at the 20 with the game on the line. Even the best receivers drop balls from time to time due to lapses in concentration, thinking about the run after the catch, or out of fear of what an opposing DB is going to do to try to knock  that ball out.

Star-divide

My issue with Stevie J this game (even though he was productive) was that stupid. selfish, childish, bordering on developmentally challenged celebration that received a 15 yard penalty and single-handedly gave the Jets 7 points going into the half. I truly believe that the organization should fine him for this. I don't care about his "Stevie-ness"; I love his abilities on the field but if we could turn him to into Lee Evans post-catch we'd be a much better football team (and probably 6-5 instead of 5-6).

Stevie, you owe us all an apology.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

It is a complete leap of logic to say that the celebration penalty “singlehandedly” gave the Jets 7 points. It contributed, yes, but several other things had to go wrong. As I read on Twitter, it is like waking up late and blaming that on getting a speeding ticket.

And yes, Stevie should know that going to the ground in celebration is a penalty — especially since he got the same flag last year after scoring on the Patriots in Foxboro.

Between Stevie and our D it a toss up..

Both contributed to lose this game for us. Stevie missed some catchable balls at the end that may have resulted in a victory. But no way on 3rd and 11 shold the Jets keep that drive alive, our Defense made Sanchez look like a better QB than he is. Stevie is not a number one receiver and we need to pick one up NEXT YEAR.

Please

I appreciate the positive spin, but the reality is we didn’t have a hope of making the playoffs this year. This drop was far more costly (our playoff chances). Not to mention I will think about his botch job until next season. I’d take a playoff birth over a 1st round draft pick 24/7 364 (not counting the day of the actual draft).

who do you guys think he will blame this time for the drops?

hopefully himself, but i don’t see that happening for some reason

by -R.G.III- on Nov 27, 2011 4:52 PM EST reply actions

agreed…how does Stevie Johnson get blamed for a ridiculous kickoff and then a stupid penalty on Dareus…Stevie must have told them to do that.

by Fucilli5 on Nov 27, 2011 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

its not about blame

Stevie could have made a play for the win, hes one of our best players. With Fred Jackson hurt he is our best offensive player. He must be able to pick up the team and make a play to win when its there. The same goes for Fitz who missed Stevie wide open on the very next play. Teams that win have guys they go to to make a play when it matters – the Jets had Plax step up big time. These guys have to play like they are the guys we can lean on to win the game and that means making an easy catch and run or making the even decent throw to a wide receiver in the endzone.

They also have defenses that don’t let Mark Sanchez throw for 4 TDs

by Fucilli5 on Nov 27, 2011 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

but thats precisely the point

your great players are expected to make plays to win games because the weaker parts of a team can’t. You could very well argue the Jets defense let a team that couldnt break 10 points the last 3 games control the clock and drive at will. Your going to have weak parts of a team, your best guys are expected to go out and make a winning play to compensate. Ours didnt – the fact that the Bills dont have a great defense is even more reason why Stevie has to make that catch or Fitzpatrick has to make that throw. Thats what playmakers do.

Agree completely. I said it before this game that if Fitz wants to be “the guy” this is his chance. Our team MVP is out for the year, we have a lot of injuries and Fitz needs to rally the troops and show us that he can lead. Well he did show that somewhat to me today. He played pretty good but the fact remains that when the game was on the line he missed the play. He had the shot and missed it. Same with Stevie….this is 2 years in a row now that the big game winning/game breaking play was there and he missed it. If he wants to be paid like a #1 he needs to play like a #1 and he just isn’t making #1 WR type plays. I’m not too high on either of these guys right now. By no means am I saying we should get rid of them, but it’s a shame that neither could step up with the game on the line.

thats it right there

Tom Brady is a winner more for the plays he makes when they are there late just as much for how he shreds defenses and sustains long drives. Both guys had windows to make a play to win, pretty standard plays too. Those are missed plays that should be made.

I disagree k-town

Stevie’s penalty put the ST in an unorthodox situation. Just like a 3rd and 25, there aren’t many designed plays to kick off from the 20. I don’t know why Dehaven called for a squib kick from there but I have a very strong suspicion that it was a result of the poor field position.
Blame that on Rayner if you want but, in my opinion, if we had asked him to do what the special teams have practiced methodically all season long (kicking off from the standard 35 yard line) then we wouldn’t have given up the 7 before half.

I’m not a Stevie hater. I love the guy but I really can’t stand to watch people do dumb things no matter where it happens.

A kickoff is not an unorthodox situation…you kick it as far as you can.

Not from the 20

It’s an unorthodox call, the squib kick. Doesn’t get called often.

by DJ O on Nov 27, 2011 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think DeHaven called a squib. Rayner just missed his spot on the football. So, it’s the exact same situation. What is different about kicking off from the 20? Teams kicked off from the 30 last season. You kick the ball 65-70 yards down field, stay in your lanes and make a tackle. Johnson’s penalty should have cost this team 10ish yards and the Jets should have started at the 30-35 instead of the 20-25 and that should have been it.

Wow. Just, wow.

This is precisely why I am not on Rumblings as much as I once was. I simply can’t take this. I can understand the original post, in the heat of the moment being upset at what many see as a silly act by Steve Johnson. But to blame him for the TD that ensued after that penalty is crazy. And after Kaiser responds very eloquently as he almost always does and points to 3 things that are as he said “…at least 10x more the cause of the TD than Johnson’s unsportsmanlike penalty.” people still can’t see the simple logic of this. You still want to pin the blame of that touchdown on Johnson? Really?

I have come to realize that you simply can’t speak truth to some people. They see what they want to see and no matter how intelligent you respond to them they will never change their minds. I think even more frustrating then the Bills losing is the craziness that happens around here after a game. It has taken something that I enjoyed and perverted it into something unbearable. I’m out.

It seems perhaps you want to see (here on Rumblings) what you [don’t] want to see as well.

I don’t know about blaming Johnson for the post-celebration TD. I do, however, still contend that Johnson acts as if he thinks he’s an elite superstar, wants to renegotiate his contract to elite levels, and consistently performs like he never spends any time practicing catching the ball. It’s pretty clear from his actions and his play that he simply thinks he is a far better player than he actually is.

Stevie doesn’t deserve criticism for drawing an unnecessary, after the play penalty? Anyone who gets that sort of penalty deserves criticism, regardless of their resume. We don’t need to accept inexcusable penalties as a part of the package. He’s not a DB that is inevitably gonna get PI calls. He’s a wideout who should know you cant go to the ground after a TD. How is Dareus’ penalty MORE relevant than Stevies? At least Dareus was making a football play, not a theatrical play.

I have low expectations. But high hopes.

EVERY Little Thing Counts!!!!!

In a game as close as this was, it was a selfish, stupid thing for Stevie to do. It gave the jets a 15 yard advantage, and that was added on to by other bonehead actions, but it came first. A franchise player always thinks “TEAM FIRST”. Stevie’s celebration relegates him to the “All About ME!” bonepile – a T.O. with less talent.

And stevie didn't hit someone helmet to helmet for another 15 yards.

Also, if people are ready to crucify Stevie for the drops, they need to be fair. IIRC David Nelson dropped an easy pass that would have converted for a 1st down on our 2nd to last drive of the game.

Nelson makes that and we’d probably keep on driving, or eat up more time. We drive and score, then there is no way the Jets have enough time to get the 2 scores they’d need to win. Not blaming Nelson, just saying he dropped a crucial pass like Stevie but Stevie is getting all the blame for the loss. His celebration was funny, went a little too far, but if it was a nail in the coffin it wasn’t the only one.

Also, I forgot who brought this up but it was a good point. Our D, while messing up, played solid for most of the game. Then, for no %$#&ing reason we break from out coverage scheme on 3rd and long and send in an all out blitz that was telegraphed from the beginning and converted by Plax on that ridiculous catch. Right at the worst time, our DC calls a boneheaded play and goes away from what has worked well the entire game. Jets convert and we go on to lose.

David Nelson drop. Steve Johnson drop. Fitz’s failure to lead Johnson in the endzone when he was wide open immediately after the drop. Fitz sailing a ball on the final play of the game. George Edwards being the screen door to our submarine. Da’Norris Searcy having a rookie moment on the wide open TD (understandable, but still costly). Rayner’s kick (whether a bad kick or a bad call by our ST coach).

These all played a big part. Let’s stop ostracizing a young WR when there is plenty of blame to go around.

That play didn’t cost us anything. The refs just call whatever they want to call. The real question: When will Lindell be back? We need a real kicker! This one just cost us a game, and not even by missing a FG!! How can you screw up a kickoff, the first play of every game?!!??!?!?!

And honestly, if he hadn’t done the plane thing he would have probably gotten away with it too.

The bad kick wasn’t Stevie’s fault, and the fact that the TEAM lost isn’t solely based on that 1 penalty. In fact there were 60 more penalty yards that we can put on the rest of the team as a whole. The BILLS lost this game, not Stevie.

IMO

Why put yourself in question? Let your play make your name for you. Be Jerry Rice not T.O.

It appeared his antic was more important than the team. He as much as said so in the post game interview. Team leaders put the team first. Get the catch. Get the score. Get the win. Put your team in position to win, not in one requiring some compensating tactic.

The Raynor kick might have been influenced by the resulting field position. A low line drive might have thwarted a potentially large run back. Sure Raynor flubbed it, but, was it because he was trying an unordinary kick in doing so? We won’t know but it would all be moot, if none of it happened in the first place.

This is exactly why David Nelson is and has been my favorite Bill for the last 2 seasons. I was upset that Fitzpatrick threw at Johnson every single time on that last drive and Johnson kept missing the ball (as well as the bad pass by Fitz). Throw the ball to your clutch players at least once, for crying out loud.

Yes, he knocked his squib kick straight into a Jet player. But the guy made a clutch 53 yard field goal today on the road, along with a 56 yard kick last week. The guy hasn’t been with us the whole season, but for the pick of kickers we had available, he was the right choice. The guy can kick.

I'm just upset that Stevie Johnson is who we knew he was.

Who here is honestly surprised to see that a pair of clutch throws were dropped by Stevie? It’s who he is. He’s not the guy you throw to with the game on the line. He drops those (See: Pittsburgh). The throw may not have been 100% perfect but it hit him in the hands, and everyone knows if it hits you in the hands, it needs to be yours. The celebration was fine, the botched kick hurt, and at the end of the day, Fitzy did all he could to try to come back and his receiving corps dropped the ball, literally.
