That is too bad.

The “Minuteman Salute” last year(?) in Foxboro was creative genius.

Too many talking heads in this world, all of them needed to put something in print on Sunday night/Monday morning….

Much ado about nothing.

Yep.....mostly just a chance for the talking heads to crap all over the Bills

I can't agree more

Why try to turn the players in the league into a group of automatons with no personality? I even think shooting his leg is distasteful, but I like his creativity and the joy he takes from playing the game.

Btw, the celebrations are nothing compared to some of the soccer celebrations in Europe. The players should be able to celebrate their achievement.

agreed for the most part....I know it is part of the new NFL, but I am old school...

I would rather players just hand the ball to the official or throw it into the stands. I think the current rules are fine. Allow them to celebrate but not to the point where it is taunting or a Broadway production.

But taunting or Broadway producing is okay according to the rules — as long as you don’t use props or go to the ground in celebration.

also, if the celebration goes on to long it is a foul.

The melodrama around this issue is ridiculous. You can’t defend him getting the penalty, it hurt us — don’t fall down dude. But that doesnt mean you have to be an emoitionless robot.

As far as celebrating being `classless’, whatever. Classless is bringing a loaded gun to a nightclub — thats fair game.

He’s not classless. Stevie has a very unique personality and a hell of a sense of humor. He’s an incredible talent that consistently beat the best CB in the league yesterday. It’s the 15 yard penalty. If he doesn’t give people a reason to doubt him then it’s to everyone’s benefit.

The point which is somehow lost in all this. The Merrill Hodges of the world acting like Stevie Johnson is some kind of hooligan when the guy hes imitating is back on the playing field after endangering a crowded night club by sticking a frigging firearm in his pants without the safety on. The world must be losing its mind.

Why can you see that Stevie took it to far because he put himself in front of the team?

I am not a fan of TD celebrations in general, but the only issue I have is that Stevie took this celebration to far. By that I mean he went to the ground knowing it would draw the penalty. At that point, the game was still on the line. Stevie put himself and his own self promotion before the team.

They can help a team as much if not more then hurt a team. A lot of playing well is attitude and a good celebration can either ignite a spark or keep the energy going. I doubt there is a man in that locker room that had a problem with the celebration. If fact if they are anything like me they too laughed their asses off.

Actual rules from rulebook are pretty ambiguous except for a few things (I cut out the parts that have to do with Unsportsmanlike Conduct that isn’t a celebratory thing):

Section 3 Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Article 1 There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct. This applies to any act which is contrary to the
generally understood principles of sportsmanship. Such acts specifically include, among others:
(b) The use of abusive, threatening, or insulting language or gestures to opponents, teammates, officials, or representatives of the League.
© The use of baiting or taunting acts or words that engender ill will between teams.
(d) Individual players involved in prolonged or excessive celebrations. Players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations while on the ground. A celebration shall be deemed excessive or prolonged if a player continues to celebrate after a warning from an official.
(e) Two-or-more players engage in prolonged, excessive, premeditated, or choreographed celebrations.
(f) Possession or use of foreign or extraneous object(s) that are not part of the uniform during the game on the field or the sideline, or using the ball as a prop.
(h) Removal of his helmet by a player in the field of play during a celebration or during a confrontation with a game official or any other player.

Note 1: Under no condition is an official to allow a player to shove, push, or strike him in an offensive, disrespectful, or unsportsmanlike manner. Any such action must be reported to the Commissioner.
Note 2: Violations of (b) or © (above), which occur before or during the game may result in disqualification in addition to the yardage penalty. Any violations at the game site on the day of the game, including postgame, may result in discipline by the Commissioner. Any violation of (g) (above) may result in disqualification and also will include discipline by the Commissioner. An official must see the entire action for a player to be disqualified.
Note 3: Violations of (b) will be penalized if any of the acts are committed directly at an opponent. These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; spinning the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation); or dancing.
Note 4: Violations of © will be penalized if any of the acts occur anywhere on the field. These acts include but are not limited to: throat slash; machine-gun salute; sexually-suggestive gestures, prolonged gyrations; or stomping on a team logo.
Note 5: Violations of (d) will be penalized if they occur anywhere on the field other than the bench area.
Note 6: If any foreign object(s) are deemed a safety hazard by the game officials, in addition to a yardage penalty, the player will be subject to ejection from the game, whether he uses the object or not.

I’m really starting to think the officials either didn’t see the Plaxico part of the celebration or didn’t get it and after reading through these a little better, I think Stevie could have been ejected actually if the officials had felt the need — via Note 2.

Also, your “Don’t go to the ground” is actually more cut and dry than even “Don’t go to the ground.” Prohibition of engaging in celebrations on the ground means that even if you were tackled and started celebrating down there (example snow angels) it’s the same as if you were standing up and fell down to do your celebration.

easy solution

NFL mandatory TD celebration is hurling the ball into the stands. Person with ball, gets to have it signed by the TD scorer after the game, should they choose to do so. This creates chance at free memorabilia, acknowledgement of the player, and crowd participation. THEN, they can head to the sideline, and celebrate with the team, and they can put it on camera, since there are a MILLION breaks during the game for face time anyway.

Someone write it up, and mail it to Goodell. He is just about desperate to show the NFL as being a fan sport, that involves fans, and lets players still have fun, which is what we want to see. This allows MORE of all of those things, and less of the “showboating” per say, as the celebrations will involve the whole team, and don’t create a delay of the game. PLUS, end zone seats become better, with the chance of free, mandatory, player interaction. MAKE them represent the team well, if that is the issue, while still letting them enjoy the fruits of their labors.

I believe they’re fined for throwing (or handing) the ball into the stands.

idk

was it? i mean.. spiking it is supposedly illegal, but that is just most guys first instinct, for good reason. I suppose handing it off to someone is just as good… we see that plenty, though most times they are friends or family members getting the ball. I don’t see how it is worse than a t-shirt being launched into the stands, assuming that people know it is coming, because, it is just what they do.

T-shirts can be ripped apart and shared as a memento. A football can cause a stampede.

Peter King just called Johnson pathetic, and an idiot on The Herd. This is getting soooo far out of hand.

must be a slow week. Wilbon said it was hilarious, so whatever to the rest of them.

I have low expectations. But high hopes.
