Buffalo Bills Sign K Dave Rayner, Per Agent
With kicker Rian Lindell shelved for the foreseeable future with a shoulder injury, the Buffalo Bills have signed free agent Dave Rayner to take his place, per his agent, Paul Sheehy.
Rayner was one of four kickers to work out for the Bills on Tuesday, beating out other familiar names like Rhys Lloyd, Shayne Graham and Brandon Coutu. After spending 2010 with the Detroit Lions, Rayner was most recently with the Oakland Raiders, where he made over $40,000 for one kickoff as a fill-in for the injured Sebastian Janikowski.
In his seventh year out of Michigan State, Rayner has connected on 55-of-75 kicks throughout his career. Last year with Detroit, he was a rock solid 13-of-16 on field goal tries filling in for Jason Hanson - including 2-of-2 from over 50 yards.
Lindell, per a Buffalo News report, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. He was injured tackling Joe McKnight on the opening kickoff of the second half in Sunday's 27-11 loss to the New York Jets.

can someone please explain to me
how a bone spur works? I really have no idea. Is it really something he cant just rest to try and recover from so that he could be available if we make the playoffs? Or is this a surgery now type of deal?

by poz on Nov 8, 2011 3:19 PM EST up reply actions
it’s built up extra bone on top of bone because of increased stress or pressure. Then it inflames the soft tissue around it and is very uncomfortable.
by J2 on Nov 8, 2011 3:27 PM EST up reply actions
see here is my question
can that pressure be reduced without surgery to the point that waiting to put him on IR to see if we can use him for a playoff run is sensible? Or is this inflammation only going to get worse regardless?

bone spurs
Having had a spur in similar circumstances myself eleven years ago I tell reliably inform you pressure can be released through a combination of rest and steroid injections. However the easiest way is simply to shave down the spur and rest. I sustained mine through cricket which is quite common.
Unfortunately there is always the risk the spur will grow back some point down the line.

good to know that it can be done. As fansince60 noted below however, I guess Kyle’s size may play a role in his ability to have this pressure reduced?
How long did you have to rest before you felt comfortable playing cricket or moving normally?

moving again
Poz,
Was able to walk normally and pain free again in only a couple of weeks and able to play cricket again in about four months but I I guess it all comes down to how much damage has been done. I’d imagine that it will take meatball longer because of highs weight and nature of the game of professional football doing more damage than bowling in local village cricket.
After the surgery I had to have physio twice a week for a couple of months to help the recovery. The one benefit Kyle has of course is elite medical care through the bills. I had to settle for treatment under our social healthcare system called the nhs.
Get well soon Kyle we need you again next season.

I posted this in the Kyle article earlier today…
An Achilles tendon bone spur is called a calcaneal or heel bone spur. Bone spurs grow over other bones, not on tendons. However, a bone spur on the heel bone can touch or affect the Achilles tendon.
An Achilles tendon bone spur forms at the insertion point of the Achilles tendon and behind the heel.
This extra bone growth affects the bursa and surrounding tissue. It creates irritation and inflammation of this area and that of the area where the Achilles tendon meets with the heel bone. Several bursa reside behind the heel bone that protect the tendon from the heel bone. Bursa are fluid-filled sacs that are lined with soft tissue.

thanks fansince60
is this irritation and inflammation something that can be reduced with rest so that he could potentially be used for a playoff push if we dont put him on IR?

an achilles spur in a big athlete(A DL man to boot) makes it almost impossible it will heal on its own in “weeks”. The average Joe might get by with NSAIDS, ice, rest, but the leverage and stress his position demands won’t make it possible.

very informative, much appreciated.
That is too bad. It would appear then he is headed for IR. That is too bad.

They took a hell of a chance cutting holes in his shoes etc. to keep him playing. Had a spur cut into the achilles tendon, it could have weakened/ruptured and we all know what that would mean. Achilles repair recovery is much more involved that that from bone spur surgery. I say shut him down and avoid a more serious problem.

looks like it is done
Lets just hope now it isnt a recurring or more serious issue

thanks for the info
I think I have the same problem, it’s been bothering for months.
I have been worried it might ruprture but I also heard from a friend of mine that acchiles tendons don’t usually hurt before they rupture so I’ve just been trying to baby it untill it goes away!
You might want to have it looked at. It could be tendonitis, which will be with you forever – but is highly manageable. Alternately, it could be a world or hurt waiting to happen. I’ve heard horror stories of what it feels like when the achillies ruptures. Some say it’s the worst pain you can feel, and is akin to being shot in the back of the leg.

I don’t think so – tendonitis is just an inflammation of a tendon, for whatever reason – I had jumper’s knee (patellar tendonitis) and with some ice you can knock it back pretty quickly – lol, rest is much better for it, but that’s no fun…
by JustAskTheAxis on Nov 8, 2011 4:43 PM EST up reply actions
I had a bone spur that led to bursitis
I figured it’d go away with time… man was i wrong, eventually it became unbearable and had to wear a cast or even the slightest movements hurt. It simply needs rest. With how much irritation and inflammation iny my case it took 2 months to heal.
I doubt i pushed it as far as Kyle Williams did… so i’d suspect it’d take even longer. Good news is that if he does give it proper rest to heal it wont be a lingering issue.
I had this exact ailment
My Achilles evidently was very close to rupturing before I finally had to have surgery done to take care of it. They had to detach the Achilles, cut the spur off my heel and drill holes in my heel to reattach the tendon. I was in a cast for at least a couple weeks and was recasted for another couple. It took me six months to heal where I could run, and another 6 months before I was OK and would risk anything like football. That was 21 years ago and I have never had any problems with it since. If this is what K Williams has, he may not be back this year. I heard somewhere that someone saw him out of his boot the other day, but he was limping. That’s not a good sign at all for this type of injury, if his heel is still inflamed after wearing the boot, then it sounds like he won’t be back to me.

Buffalo kickers
I’ve been a Bills fan for 24 seasons and unless I’m forgetting somebody, I’ve seen the following kickers attempt field goals for the good guys in nearly a quarter century:
Scott Norwood
Steve Christie
Jake Arians
Shayne Graham
Mike Hollis
Rian Lindell
One year they employed Brad Daluiso for kickoff duties and for one September game in 1998, they used Cole Ford (future bank robber) for this task. Dave Rayner may have stumbled upon a career if he makes the most of his opportunity.

What a crazy world we live in.
Was funny that Moorman almost had a touchback (can’t remember if he did).

I might’ve expected some retort in the media or maybe even sticking up the finger to trolling Jets fans but waiving their Wang I never saw coming
it seems like every year we get a significant amount of injuries.

I think it may have to do with Brad Smith not being fast enough. Kickers are quite often among the fastest players on the field. I’d argue that Brian Moorman may be the fastest Bills on the roster. He ran a sub-50 in the 400m hurdles.
Dude is fast and not like an alligator. He can go more than a few yards at top speed.

Well, good luck to Dave.
Rian’s probably my favorite player on the roster over the past five years, amazingly enough, though over the past three he’s not even my favorite ‘Ryan’ :P but it’s still close. But I would not mind it if Rayner does so well they can IR Lindell and just let him heal up. (I really do feel for kickers in general, tell you the truth. How the hell do the ones outside the top 25 or so even make a living? They can’t even hold a day job while they’re waiting for an injury to open a roster slot.)
Of course, if we beat GangGreen, the Phins and Dallas in the next three weeks, we have to be prepared for the playoffs. So disregard what I said if that happens. (I know we’ll be at LEAST 2-1, really I do, but winning the rematch is a doozy this year.)
