I approve. He’s a done a solid amount with a mediocre roster. I know he’s got some talent on offense, but Jackson rose to heights that even the optimists wouldn’t have predicted (averaging a crazy 5.5 ypc 170 carries into season, 44 rec. yards per game and over 11 ypc) and Gailey deserves some credit for that. Especially considering the way that Nix likes to just kind of throw OLs together by trusting his gut on other teams’ discarded talent (a strategy of Nix’s I like, by the way).

People talked (and still do) about Johnson’s breakout and how Evans helped it, but he’s still on pace for about 80 catches, 900 yards and 7-8 TDs. Hes’ been effectice despite underneath options like Nelson and Chandler being Buffalo’s other go to weapons. It’s a pretty blah group of offensive players and even considering Buffalo’s recent offensive struggles, Gailey has done an excellent job of scheming around what he’s got.

Now we just need to surround Gailey with a defense and he’s a playoff coach who you can actually go into a big game believing that he’s not going to be outcoached and cost the team the game.

i agree. hes done a lot with a bunch of nobodies and has improved the team since taking over.

now if they can get george edwards out of there and get someone in that isnt overmatched at the NFL level we would have a shot. its unrealistic to expect the offense to score 30 to 40 points every game…even the mighty patriots and packers cant do it. so while the jets part 1, dallas and miami games were crushing i place it mostly at the defense. to let sanchez and matt moore look like elway and montana is unacceptable

I find it logically confounding that Chan Gailey gets a pass for a lack of talent, but George Edwards doesn’t. You can’t have it both ways.

Chan is an offensive minded coach that has the offense ranked 10th in the league in points scored with a group of nobodys and injuries. George Edwards has the D ranked 28th in points allowed despite having the first 4 picks in this years draft (and a bunch in the 2010 draft) to help him. I think thats the difference. Chans mistake was hiring Edwards.

by loupiccone on Dec 1, 2011 12:55 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

hasnt George Edwards defense scored and put Chans offense in easy position to score a ton of those points?

I think we’re tops in the league in points off turnovers.

yes it has and he should get credit for part of that in my opinion. im not going to completely place everything on edwards. however you can also use the smae logic abd say that for as many times as they helped the offense by creating turnovers they also failed the offense by stopping crucial 3rd down situations. this in turn hindered the offense by keeping them off the field and out of sync.

by Air Compressor on Dec 1, 2011 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Chan Gailey has long been regarded as a coach that excels at making something out of nothing. To expect George Edwards to adhere to the same lofty standard is, I believe, misguided.

I’m not even trying to defend Edwards here, because his defenses have been horrible for two years. What I’m reading, however, is that people don’t like Edwards – and want him fired – because he’s not a wizard like Gailey. That doesn’t make sense to me.

by Brian Galliford on Dec 1, 2011 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

i understand your points and would agree somewhat. gailey does deserve blame for the offensive disappearance in that 3 game stretch.

however, the defense is maddeningly predictable. a lot can be blamed on lack of personnel but lets look at a similar defense in the NE Pats. they have similar skill in similar positions as us and also run a hybrid. the big difference is the pats bend but dont break allowing almost an entire touchdown less per game (5 pts). we obviously know why that is…coaching

so gailey as the boss, deserves blame, he also gets more of a pass since he doesnt directly determine defensive production on gameday (i.e. play calling)

by Air Compressor on Dec 1, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

we obviously know why that is…coaching

Again, I don’t agree. This is just like anything else in football; there’s no one root cause. You can point to any number of factors for that statistical difference; Belichick is one of them, but so is Tom Brady and that offense. There are more that could be mentioned.

My stance on this: I wouldn’t bat an eye if the Bills fired Edwards, but I won’t care if they retain him, either. They need to get better on defense. We know where they need to get better, and I’m not sure that the coordinator post is very high on that list. Dave Wannstedt isn’t going to magically manufacture a pass rush, folks.

oh c'mon brian

edwards sucks! point blank. his only positive is that early in the season his defense was turning the ball over, putting points on the board off of those turnovers, and putting the offense in position to score. but we ALL knew that would not hold up. it was just a matter of time before our true colors bled through; that being we gave up entirely too many yds on huge plays, and too many points. once the turnovers came to a screetching halt so did our “opportunistic” label.

Chan Gailey has long been regarded as a coach that excels at making something out of nothing. To expect George Edwards to adhere to the same lofty standard is, I believe, misguided.

How so? Isn’t that what you SHOULD expect out of your DC (or OC)? Perhaps if he was a “wizard like Gailey” our defense wouldn’t be in the shape it’s in now? He’s had the same amount of time as Gailey, with the majority of the draft picks over the past 2 yrs and has STILL done nothing with it. So of course we expect him “to adhere to the same lofty standard” and he should be fired for not being able to produce, period. Give Gailey an entire draft to cater to the offense (for the most part) like edwards had this yr and our offense would be lights out! It’s the GM’s job to bring in the best talent they are able to get and it’s the coordinator’s and coaches job to maximize the potential of their players. If the best job edwards can do with what he has been given is what he’s put on the field over the past 2yrs then I would say yeah he should be fired. If not fired, then demote him to LB Coach and promote Wannstedt to the DC. But for crying out loud he DOES NOT need to be the DC, and you know it.

IMO i think that the defense has held their own in most games .. as ascheme not so much .. but like taking advantage of offensive mistakes very much so .. but then again .. when our offense goes 3 and out .. that keep our D on the feild much longer the the O and the defenders hit their gassing point ..

when is like, 5th worst defense anything but garbage? we are at least in middle of the pack in offense. lower middle. sure, weak offense makes it harder on defense. BUTTTTTT….. weak defense makes it hard on offense. we are just a weak team still. but fact is, defense ranks lower, so really, they have to be the culprit. otherwise you are overthinking things.

Gailey isnt getting a pass for lack of talent. We do not like how VANILLA (for the lack of better PG-13 words available) hi9s scheme is most of the time. For example If you are showing the BLITZ (especially while holding a huge yellow arrow pointing to the blitzer) any decent QB is gonna check off of that play .. how about show the blitz then back out in to zone coverage. Or maybe show the blitz on the left side, but dont blitz from the left, have someone from the right side blitz while the left maintain coverage .. im just saying ..

I voted not sure

I like him, but i can’t agree with some things, like throw McKelvin uner the bus saying he was struggling and then benching him when Florence was not playing better than him. Why he don’t said that about Flo after the Giants game? Also the Maybin threatment, the guy was a hard worker, but they never give him a chance. It looks to me like he is hard with some players and very patient with anothers. That’s not good, you need to respect every player on the roster equally.

Voted not sue too.

Brad Smith’s help to the team is not enough and Gailey’s excuse for this ( he did not go thru a camp) is weak because they signed him under those conditions (what was he getting him for next year? A big black mark here.
Spiller is another black mark. That high of a draft pick should have helped more regardless of fred’s presence.. And Bills’ fans knew we had a great back already even if Gailey did not. Many draft writers criticized the Spiller pick because we already were set there. Initially, I thought the pick was a good one because I assumed Gailey had plans for him. It turns out, he did not. another big black mark.
And finally, those 3 losses in a row where we were just embarrassed like that makes you scratch your head. I am glad we at least, showed up in jerks two.

1) Chan has sounded too much like Dickie Jauron in post-game pressers during the losing streak. So much so, it’s painful to listne to him say he doesn’t have answers.

2) He should have sat Johnson for a couple of series after his ridiculous rehearsed show in the end zone. It would be nice to see a Bills HC be a hard-nosed SOB once in a decade. The last thing this team needs is for a lack of discipline to begin seeping in.

3) I still haven’t forgotten how the Bills finished last season; they appeared to mail it in the last 2-3 games. It had better not happen again this month.

About that endzone dance. It’s very likely Gailey didn’t even see it during the game. He was likely preparing the next play (yes, I know – only a PAT), and his POV was probably not the best to see Johnson dancing.

So I ask: How is Gailey supposed to discipline a player he doesn’t know is freelancing?

I’m not sure he saw the dance, but I sure as heck know he knew it happened, and right away. You can see him point a finger at his feet hailing Stevie to approach him in any video replay of the celebration, likely to berate him for drawing a flag.

They showed it on NFL Replay. It was the added SoundFX portion that they put in the replay

He’s telling Stevie “you just can’t do that” and Stevie apologizes.

Now, before and after Chan talks to him all of his team mates on the sideline are congratulating him. The defense didn’t seen to care one bit about the penalty, especially George Wilson.

It was just a foolish play, nothing that requires a benching IMO.

they didn't "care" about the penalty, because of jubilation of getting in the endzone

it isn’t until the flubbed kick, that momentum swung, and then we were reeling… and needed to fight back, and fell short.

i agree though. Benching doesn’t hurt just the player, it hurts the team. hold them accountable other ways, such as making up missed time, mandatory work, demotion to 3rd WR something like that. make them earn back the respect they feel they deserve. DON’T do what Reid did w D Jax, cuz he couldn’t afford to do that really. Or maybe he knew they were screwed, and he just wanted more than one scapegoat. who knows. i don’t care to speculate much. it just seems to backfire more than anything. find other ways. be understanding, like our head coach was. obviously, you need to motivate, and control, but people are people.

It’s been two years and no improvement on the defensive side. He must approve of the job Edwards is doing, every week it’s pretty much the same Vanilla pudding.
It amazes me that for all of Gailey’s offensive creativity he can’t find someone that can mimic him on the defensive side of the ball.

It will be hard for me to disapprove until one week after the season is over. If in that time frame George Edwards isn’t fired, then I will disapprove.

As much as I want that (long string of expletives) gone immediately, I do understand the classy thing to do would be to fire him in the post season.

Approve

I expect to be answering these polls much like the last few…certain in my approval of Gailey while wavering between unsure and disapproval of the GM.

Chan’s adjustment in his rematch with Rex Ryan was a thing of beauty. Take the players out and look at the strategy and Gailey out-dueled one of the finest defensive minds in football on the heels of a major beatdown. Gailey finally went for Ryan’s strong point and attacked, attacked, attacked Revis. That was either foolishly lucky or courageously fearless by a man with moxie. I see it as the latter and I think Gailey’s moxie and grit are reflected in his players – they have taken on this personality of the coach – this team is fearless and they possess resolve much like their coach. It can be exhilarating but frustrating at times but ultimately I like the identity this team is forming under the ball coach.

Any coach would get their clock cleaned entering the AFC East arena as the newbie and going up against Bill Bellichick and Rex Ryan. With time to assess his surroundings and his opponents, Gailey has rightly earned the respect of both by beating New England and then taking Ryan to the wire. Good for him. As far as I’m concerned, he’s shown we have a coach who can matchup with the heavyweights in the division.

Gailey has gotten more out of Stevie Johnson, Fred Jackson, Chris Kelsay, George Wilson, Stevie Johnson, and Andy Levitre than Dick Jauron ever did. He got results from Erik Pears, Kraig Urbik, Scott Chandler, David Nelson, and Chris Hairston. He went through a slump during the injury rash but his GM sent away much of the depth he might have had to combat that at the beginning of the season.

He has his flaws but all men do. I like our coach and I support what hes done with this team.

Dick Jauron also led the team to more wins in a season than Gailey ever has – I’m not defending Jauron at all, but Gailey hasn’t exactly set the world on fire here either…

Jauron went 7-9 each of his first 3 seasons here and Gailey has yet to reach that mark and may very well miss it this year. It always seems, since the departure of Wade Phillips, that this team is on the verge of turning it around and getting over the hump, but just can’t – I don’t have a ton of confidence that Gailey will be able to buck this trend either…

But we tore down the building before Jauron and we tore it down before Williams and Mularkey too -

My comment was in specific response to the comment that Gailey’s gotten more our Johnson, Jackson, etc. – coaches get certain things from certain guys – big deal – should we bring back Mularkey because he got the most out of Peerless Price or Travis Henry?

if Chan were truly doing “more” with the team, it would seem as though that would be reflected in the record. I am not in the camp that we will end up 7-9, and even so… that would mean that Chan win % and overall record is still lower.

Sorry, Poz. I don’t see:
5-6,
1-3 in the AFC East,
3 blowouts in a row with one to the Fins,
the #28 ranked defense,
and a coach who says “I can’t tell you why we aren’t effective” -

as “real nice”.

If we don’t win another game, 5-11 isn’t too far from 4-12. And, it would be the reverse of the pattern from last year(i.e. regression)- that’s worse in my book for a “rebuilding” team. That’s not nice. And, what’s really not nice is two years of defensive picks and still the #28 ranked defense. Is that all on Buddy? I do not believe Chan has no say in the selections.

one catch by Stevie or one proper kick by Rayner

and we’re 2-2 in the division with wins against the Pats and Jets. Thats huge!

Regarding the 5-6 record, I think Nix really let this team down and cost us some wins during the injury rash that might have been avoided had he kept talent already on the roster. The team lost multiple number 2s, if he hadnt traded Lee Evans this hit to the offense in the slump would have been avoided. The team lost its center , if he had kept Hangartner around this might have been avoided as such a critical loss. This team has had no pass rush since Merriman went down and in Kelsays absence, if he hadnt given up on Maybin this might have been alleviated a little.

Might Gailey have had some say in those decisions? He might. But its still the GMs call and I think this team might be 7-3 or 6-5 if some of that talent and depth had been there for when the injury rash would – and it always does – hit.

Its not that simple

serving the functions of both is difficult, its why we dont see more coach-GMs in this league and its wise to respect the sphere of influence each has to preserve a working relationship. It was a disaster when we had everyone stepping on each others decision making toes in the Jauron era with the Inner Circle.

A hierarchy is a good thing. Gailey should make his feelings known and then get out of Buddys way for the sake of the franchise and the team. Dissent among the leadership is not a good thing to show publicly

I’ve been hearing this for years now – the reality is we’re 1-3 and 5-6 overall! Why is it that we’re always just one play away or saying ridiculous things like we had 5 losses by 3 pts or less, etc. – these statements all mask the fact that we’re currently a losing team and have been near the bottom of the league for over a decade in a sport specifically designed to promote competition among its teams – this isn’t baseball where small market teams are essentially cut out of the playoff picture most years.

but we didn’t beat the Jets, we lost twice and one was absolutely abhorrent – yes we beat the Pats and that was a great win (but c’mon, it happens – the Jags beat the Ravens, the Rams beat the Saints, etc.), but at the same time I don’t see a ton of improvement in this team – I definitely see some, but I also see teams in situations similar to ours improving at a considerably faster rate than we are…

Second year coach/GM/DC/HC combo is doing better than .500? And no, the 49ers are in their third year (I consider their rebuild to start they year they hired Singletery).

and a coach who says "I can’t tell you why we aren’t effective" -

You keep harping on that Gailey phrase, but don’t you think it was used to challenge his players after a bad divisional loss (Jets)?
I believe that 3 game slump can be attributed to the players questioning themselves, Chan has always been upfront and that was a way of telling his players that some loses will be bad but you can’t feel sorry for yourself and that you have to pick yourself up. Given Dareus pep talk before the Jets I must say the players needed to change the attitude and keep fighting through adversity like they did in Septemer (comeback wins)

Dick Jaurons Bills had wins vs the Jets and were One Mckelvin fumble away from closing out the Pats...

How can some of you forget that?

You guys make it sound like Gailey has been head and shoulders above Jauron…when he has most definitely not been.

I didnt say Jauron was so much better than Gailey…however some claim the opposite to be true.

Its well documented that im not a big fan of Gailey…and others dont care for Jauron. Thats all well and good.

Im saying lets put them up side by side at what They did through their first 25 games…

When did you ever think that Jauron out-schemed or out-coached (on gameday) another respectable coach?

That’s why Gailey gives me more hope than Jauron. They both have their warts, but Gailey has shown the ability to actually coach and adjust.

The results are similar so far, so I see your point, but the means to the end have been different in my view.

I voted disapprove for the horrible November the Bills had, and Chan was a big part of it. The game plans and lack of adjustments prior to the second Jets game were pathetic. Add to that the Levitre at center disaster, and I can’t approve of the job Chan has done in November

Starting from what I call day one, or when he said ‘Buddy I cant fix #5’ the coach had this team producing beyond what could be expected. Thats nearly a season & a half.

Things caught up to him durring the 1st jets game, then 2 abysmal outings; even the best teams are flat once in a while.

He pushed the ticket w/#67 & admitted his mistake; but that one is really on Buddy anyways.

Chastised #13 in a grown up way, or ‘you dont make fun of people’. Didnt crush him but should have got him thinking. Or, being critical of someone who spent 2 yrs of his life behind bars, for shooting himself of all things(pathetic display of the criminal justice system) & he’s a top notch wr to boot, was about as smart as to Tyson biting off Hollyfields ear. But #13 has to realize it himself.

The O is overproducing at nearly every position & the special teams are adequate+.

My beef w/Chan would be he is not holding the assistant head coach, the LB coaches, secondary coach & the DC to the same standard that he has set for both O & sp teams.

I love what he’s done on offense. Our line is playing well and Fitz is looking great. But he’s the head coach, not offensive coordinator. Our defense is not playing at an acceptable level. In the last few weeks our special teams have also been guilty of pretty major mistakes. 11 games into year 2 with the resources we have spent our defense should not be this bad.

Approve

I know the last month’s record hasn’t been the best. But for people to take it out on Chan’s overall approval rating is a bit premature. You have to look at the season as a whole. You have to look at he led this team that at the beginning of the season was given no chance by the “experts” and turned them into one tough team. While the players are the ones that executed it, the play calling and game plans certainly contributed to the Bills early success. He was able to keep this team focussed when the injury bug first started hitting, and was initially successful overcoming the injuries. Yes, the Bills got wolloped 3 weeks in a row after the injury bug got to be too much. But then he helped do something quite remarkable this past week. He took that “down on our luck” mentality he saw in the locker room with the 3 blow outs and has pushed a culture where those who want ot just hang it up can sit—he’d rather have lesser talent players out there who want to win. You could see that winning mentality in this last Jets game. They didn’t pull out the W, but what they showed for the first time in a month was heart. You see it still in players like Barnett who Tweet that they want to win out—they “Billieve”. With all the injuries this team has, I’m not counting on the Bills to end their playoff drought this year. But I sure love it that this team is still fighting for it. To me, that’s a reflection of their coach, so I deffinitely approve of Chan!

Tough to say in some ways...

Overall, yes. I do approve of the job he’s doing. But he’s in over his head when it comes to defense and he’s hired the wrong guy.

I voted disapprove simply for the fact that we do this monthly and I weighed in on the last month of play. Horrible. Terrible. Embarrassing. The issue that sealed the deal for me was either his approval of or naivety to the called squib kick.

That one gets a big WTF from me. All week long we’ve heard, discussed, and bashed Stevie Johnson’s antic as a key reason they lost that game. Well, there was also some blame to be placed on that decision to kick such an idiotic ball and then the defense doing their best job at making Sanchez look like Brady.

So right now, no I do not approve of the job he’s done. I just don’t know how much else he can do to improve his standing this year.

I didn’t see the game unfortunately but I could have sworn I heard that the squib kick wasn’t necessarily a bad call, the kick was just botched. Is that the case?

by billsnterps on Dec 1, 2011 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

The kick was botched, yes. But still, a squib isn’t ever going to go as far as a normal kick. Why give the Jets less distance to move down the field? At the very least, it’d change the field on them and back them up more after ToD.

Too many run-for-the-bus games. As a head coach, he’s an outstanding offensive coordinator.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you can name the Bills offensive coordinator off the top of your head?

not sure they were run for the bus, but, they were lame game plans and the execution was horrendous. Those two facts can be laid at the feet of Gailey, and grounds for disapproval. Oh, and the offensive coordinator, I believe, is Gailey.

I knew you could, Brian. But it really does matter.

The primary role of the head coach is to prepare the team to play the upcoming game. The coach provides direction, motivation, and has final signoff on the game plan. The detailed management of the offense is a “nice to have” provided the other responsibilities are adedquately fulfilled. Defensive direction has been questionable and motivation has been lacking at times this year.

by Rick A on Dec 1, 2011 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Gailey has the normal responsibilities of a head coach during the week; he’s involved offensively and defensively. The only time his role changes is on game days, as he typically spends time looking at play sheets between offensive series and, obviously, calling plays when the team is on the field.

Coaches usually have a specialization though. You don't see Rex running the Jets offense. Why? Because that's not what he's good at so he delegates.

Hmmm

I will barely vote approve. I think he’s doing a good job of getting good production out of this under-talented offense. With very few playmakers at WR, he’s done a fine job of scheming around that weakness and getting very solid play out of Ryan Fitzpatick most of the time. He’s helped Fred Jackson become a top 5 RB by really taking advantage of his strengthes and not just giving Spiller carries to give him carries.

On the Other hand, the D is an absolute mess. I mostly blame Nix for the lack of talent in the right spots. Injuries haven’t helped, but I have to question George Edwards. It’s not so much the poor play, rather it’s the lack of adjustments and creativity. It just seems we’re trotting the same scheme out each week to mostly dismal results. I’m not sure if it’s the lack of talent or coaching so it’s tough to make any concrete decisions, but Gailey does need to face the music after two years. This unit needs major improvement.

I wish he’d utilize Spiller or Leo as kick returner more. Enough with Brad Smith. He’s not nearly as good with these new kickoff rules. You need speed back there.

So I approve for now, but if the team mails it in like last year down the stretch, he’ll be getting a different vote next time around. Nix still gets a big disapprove, though.

Agree on the Offense.

The attitude and overall defense is insulting! Need a Big Hitter in DB to get fined! And Set the Tone! Since LB’s are going to have to be cover skilled more so now a days. But Offense is explosive at times at times! Need a WR like Lee Evans. Need To Draft Jefferies Blackmon Fuller of that nature who won’t drop open passes. Defense Defense Defense.

I voted approve for Chan.........

………….. but he failed to make any changes during our 3 game destruction.
He needs to do better at changing the plan on the fly when it isn’t working.

On the good side, Chan has brought us an imaginative offense that we have not seen in a long time.
I think our defensive problems are:
Not enough playmakers. Injuries. And a D coordinator who lacks imagination.

How can Wade (Elmer J Fudd) turn a crappy Houston D into a good one in one year with no offseason training camps?

I don’t see how it was that imaginative – it was a pretty straightforward spread… It was effective for a while, but hasn’t been as much so lately…

for the first time that I can remember. I think considering they slumped from 5-2 to 5-6 this month the coach has to take some of the heat for that. Still hoping he can turn it around next month and finish 8-8 or better.
